- Chapter 80 - The Auction Begins
After dealing with Xi Chuanbai, who had been controlled by the Virus System, Gu Jiaoyang lost the mood to continue exploring the mountain. He reinforced the spiritual barrier, checked that everything was secure, and headed home.
A few days later, Gu Jiaoyang bumped into Xi Chuanbai at school. After exchanging glances, he realised Xi Chuanbai seemed to have no recollection of what happened on the mountain, so he whispered to the Monitoring System in his mind.
“I think something’s up. Is the Virus System plotting a new conspiracy?” Gu Jiaoyang said, holding a paintbrush in his mouth and resting his hand on an easel. The Monitoring System thought for a moment and agreed there was a potential problem.
I’m not sure. But the Virus System is going too far, controlling the host’s body without consent. That’s a serious violation of our laws! The Monitoring System was angry, but temporarily powerless to do anything about the Virus System.
Gu Jiaoyang’s mind spun, and he had a vague premonition that the Virus System was feeling frantic about something. “Maybe my arrival has changed too much of the plot? Perhaps the Virus System isn’t getting enough energy and is getting desperate.” Thinking this, Gu Jiaoyang twirled his paintbrush and continued with his painting.
The Monitoring System, feeling useless, sulked in Gu Jiaoyang’s sea of consciousness, diligently computing data and working to crack the Virus System’s defence.
Days passed like this, and the Brilliant Auction was held as scheduled.
Gu Jiaoyang had enrolled in the art department because of Dai Gucan. He wasn’t sure if painting arrays and talismans shared common ground with other forms of painting, but his grades were surprisingly good, showing a natural talent that pleased his tutor.
Consequently, his work was bundled with a few seniors’ pieces and placed in a relatively prominent position at the Brilliant Auction. He hadn’t painted anything particularly high-brow or ambitious he had simply decided to capture the morning sunlight shining into the glass room in their back garden. Perhaps because his mind was filled with joyful thoughts of Dai Gucan while he painted, the piece came out particularly bright and vibrant.
The Brilliant Auction was held in the evening. The Business School had taken the lead, renting the auditorium of a central skyscraper some distance from the campus. As a contributing artist, Gu Jiaoyang naturally received an invitation that allowed him to bring a guest, so he and Dai Gucan had an early dinner and went together.
Dai Gucan’s company affairs hadn’t been overly busy lately. He was focused on learning Gu Jiaoyang’s cultivation methods while negotiating contracts with quality domestic pharmaceutical suppliers, aiming to fill the entire mountain plot leased by his precious wife with the best medicinal herb seeds.
So, as soon as he heard his dear wife’s artwork was going to a charity auction, he gladly agreed. He promptly ordered two bespoke suits, and escorted his little precious wife to the event.
The central skyscraper had been rented out for the charity auction, which was spearheaded by the prestigious capital’s art university. Naturally, guests flocked to the event, and a section of the car park had been reserved exclusively for VIP attendees.
After parking, Gu Jiaoyang and Dai Gucan still had to walk the red carpet. The charity auction looked quite professional. However, Gu Jiaoyang didn’t like the flashing camera lights, so he quickly pulled Dai Gucan, barely pausing, into the main hall. Dai Gucan himself had no interest in being photographed and was happy to be led by his obedient wife. To outsiders, the two looked like a perfectly matched couple showing off their affection.
The moment Gu Jiaoyang and Dai Gucan turned the corner and entered the hall, Xi Chuanbai spotted them. However, he was currently speaking to a classmate with a gentle, ‘sweetheart’ expression, like a pure white flower. Only when he turned away, out of sight of others, did the cold malice in his eyes show. Once this auction was over, he was definitely going to teach Gu Jiaoyang a lesson to soothe the hatred in his heart!
Gu Jiaoyang suddenly sneezed. Before he could rub his nose, Dai Gucan caught his hand and began rubbing it. “Is the air conditioning too cold?” Dai Gucan checked the temperature of his hand. Relieved that it wasn’t cool, he still wrapped his arm around Gu Jiaoyang, pulling him closer, then looked up at the ceiling vent and moved them slightly away from the draught.
“Maybe,” Gu Jiaoyang replied, leaning into his man’s chest. He felt delighted and wrapped his own arm around the man’s waist in return. The spiritual energy circulating through his body meant he didn’t actually feel external temperature changes intensely; his body automatically maintained a constant temperature. But Gu Jiaoyang simply enjoyed the feeling of being carefully looked after by his man.
The two of them, inseparable, walked hand-in-hand to their reserved table. The venue rented for the Brilliant Auction didn’t have private rooms, so everyone sat together at tables arranged around the central stage, divided into groups according to the numbers on the tables. The auction hadn’t started yet, so everyone sat around their tables and chatted.
As an artist who had submitted work, Gu Jiaoyang was seated in a designated area along with other students and their accompanying family members. The area was filled with fellow students and their parents.
Although they didn’t know each other well, once one person opened the conversation, the parents gradually warmed up, using the shared connection of their children’s school to talk about their lives. Dai Gucan looked handsome and young. The parents at their table initially thought he was Gu Jiaoyang’s older brother, but they were surprised to learn he was Gu Jiaoyang’s legitimate, registered husband.
They hadn’t expected Gu Jiaoyang, with his youthful looks, to be married so young. However, since his partner looked equally impressive, they quickly moved on to asking about relationship gossip.
Gu Jiaoyang wasn’t easily embarrassed, and his personality was as bright and outgoing as the sun. He didn’t mind people asking about his relationship and openly shared some anecdotes that wouldn’t cause any trouble.
“It was definitely love at first sight. Mr. Dai is so handsome that he immediately captured my little heart. He’s my first love, too…” Gu Jiaoyang chatted animatedly with the parents. The parents were equally relaxed. When the conversation turned nostalgic, one parent shared the story of how he pursued his wife, exchanging gossip. The student sitting at the table watched his father chat away, completely mortified, unsure whether to laugh or cry.
Dai Gucan sat quietly beside them, listening to his precious little one talk sweetly, the curve of his smile impossible to suppress. Nothing made a man happier than having his partner openly declare their affection and stake their claim in public. Dai Gucan, whose heart was like an old house on fire, was no exception. As he listened, his eyes, fixed on Gu Jiaoyang, were so full of tenderness they could practically drip water. The student sitting beside them, nursing his cup, thought I shouldn’t be here. I should be under the car.
