- Chapter 49 - Killed by You
Dai Gucan swallowed the tablet, suppressing his nausea. The remaining pill bottle, now that the medicine was down, seemed to lose its value; his hand released it, and it clattered to the floor.
Plip…
A few drops of sweat ran down Dai Gucan’s chin and dropped onto the floor, making a dull, quick sound before merging into the existing water stain.
All the household staff had been temporarily suspended. They were on paid leave until further notice, and though they were curious, none had asked any questions.
The already spacious three-storey villa felt even emptier without the busy staff. All the lights in the house were off; only the faint moonlight filtering through the French windows provided enough light to barely make out Dai Gucan’s figure. He sat slumped on the floor, his back against the wall, head bowed.
“According to reports… the wilderness activity organised by a certain platform caused major… under the influence of severe weather… a mudslide…”
“One person dead, one person missing.”
On a nearby table, a mobile phone, the only object in the house showing signs of life, played a news report on a loop. Every time the broadcast reached the phrase “one person missing,” Dai Gucan, whose expression was hidden in the gloom, would tremble slightly.
“Mr Dai! From today, I’m your dear, sweet boyfriend!”
“Mr Dai! I super-duper-mega-love you! Mua!”
Dai Gucan sat on the floor. Although it was the height of summer after the college entrance exams, he felt chilled to the bone, as if sinking into a muddy swamp, his mouth and lungs filled with cold, seeping sludge.
His head wasn’t aching, yet various images flashed through his mind again and again with a roaring intensity: broken vehicles, a thundering, rainy night, a roaring mudslide, and deafening tinnitus… accompanied by warm, splattering blood and fragmented limbs…
Why… why did it always turn out this way?
“According to reports… a certain platform…”
The mobile phone nearby started broadcasting the news again. In the gloomy villa, it seemed that apart from this brightly lit screen, nothing else was alive.
Four Days Later.
“It’s getting more severe. The patient’s emotional state is extremely unstable. I’m concerned if this continues…”
“I understand. Thank you, Dr Qiu. I’ll take you out for dinner another time. We have things to do, so we’ll be leaving now.”
Qin Yuan interrupted the doctor, put away the medical records, and gave Dr Qiu a strained smile. She pulled her nephew by the arm and left the consulting room.
After Qin Yuan left, the young assistant nearby couldn’t help but speak up: “Ms Qin is such a good aunt. Every few years, she drops her overseas work to bring her nephew for a check-up. But their family is so pitiful; they were left with just the two of them so early.”
“Say less,” Dr Qiu said, pushing up his glasses and placing another report into a folder.
Good? He doubted it. With both of them suffering from mental illnesses, it was likely hereditary.
Dr Qiu recalled the things Qin Yuan had said to him and couldn’t help but shiver. Money made the world go round, and he was just a small doctor who dared not offend her.
The secrets of the elite were best left alone. Once he had saved enough money, he needed to leave the country as soon as possible.
Dai Gucan, trailing behind her, remained silent, his lips tightly pressed. His eyes were vacant, as if the entire world held no meaning for him.
“Gucan.” Qin Yuan sat on the sofa, calling the man standing before her with a gentle voice.
Seeing that Dai Gucan didn’t respond, Qin Yuan smoothed the curls of her voluminous hair. She spoke slowly, with the unique tenderness of a woman, as if the person standing before her wasn’t her nephew, but a lover.
“You only have your aunt left as kin. You only have your aunt, Gucan.”
Seeing Dai Gucan still didn’t react, Qin Yuan began recounting stories from their childhood. As she spoke, she played with her hair, looking like a young girl experiencing her first crush.
“…We were so close back then. Everyone spoiled you and loved you. Whatever you wanted, your aunt would buy it for you.”
“Do you remember that time? Your aunt’s boyfriend, out of jealousy, said terrible things about you. Your aunt slapped him and kicked him out. From then on, everyone in the school knew: if they wanted to date your aunt, they had to please you, her nephew…”
“And that other time, because your aunt accidentally scalded you while serving porridge, Yan Jun yelled at me. My younger brother always loved you so much…”
“You see… we all loved you that much…”
“But why…”
Qin Yuan’s tone suddenly shifted as she spoke this line. Her beautiful almond eyes widened, almost bulging. The fingers that had been gently curling her hair suddenly clawed at Dai Gucan’s neck. The nails, painted bright red, dug into his skin, and her high-heeled shoe which she hadn’t bothered to remove kicked viciously at Dai Gucan’s leg.
“Why! Why did you kill Yan Jun!!!”
“If it wasn’t for you! Yan Jun wouldn’t have died!!!!”
“Why did he love you so much!!!!”
“Why was he consumed by you! I tried so hard to please you! Yet he treated me like that!!”
“He actually dared to hit me because of you!!!”
“I’m his own sister!!! I’m the one who shares his blood!!!”
“Why did he have to die because of you!!!!”
“He was so good…”
Dai Gucan’s pupils trembled slightly when Qin Yuan said the name “Yan Jun,” but that was his only reaction. After that brief moment, he returned to his lifeless state, allowing his Aunt Qin Yuan to punch and kick him without resistance.
“Gucan, dear…”
“You look so much like him.”
Qin Yuan seemed tired from hitting him. She leaned against Dai Gucan, slowly caressing his face. Her bright red nails left indentations on his skin. The frenzied hatred from moments before seemed to vanish. She returned to her small-woman persona, resting against Dai Gucan and stroking his face.
“The Dai Corporation was the lifeblood he poured his entire life into…”
“You truly are his son, to have made the Dai Corporation so successful…”
“Gucan, you must listen to your aunt. Your aunt is the only blood relative you have left.”
“You killed them all. Don’t you continue to go astray, alright?”
“That child was called Gu Jiaoyang, wasn’t he? Jiaoyang—’Bright Sun’. His parents must have loved him dearly to give him such a name. But…”
Qin Yuan patted Dai Gucan’s face. Because of her heels, the height difference between them wasn’t too significant. She stood on her tiptoes, pulled Dai Gucan’s hair down, and spoke softly against his ear with her vivid red lips.
“He liked you, and he was killed by you…”
“Gucan, your fate is terrible. You are a Heaven-cursed lone star, you deserve to be solitary and miserable…”
“Isn’t it better for just you and your aunt to rely on each other…”
“I’m the only blood relative you have left, you see…”
“…”
Only after Qin Yuan spoke those final words did Dai Gucan finally react. His lips moved slightly, yet still, nothing came out.
