- Chapter 47 - The Kill
“This way!” Gu Jiaoyang dragged Zhu Zhengwen towards the stream. Li Lili had already run off without a trace, and although Liu Nuo tried to follow Gu Jiaoyang’s group, they twisted and turned, quickly opening up the distance between them.
With their nest destroyed, the hornets couldn’t possibly not be furious. And as animals who looked guilty and fled immediately, they were clearly the culprits and must not be spared!
“Buzz, buzz, buzz, buzz…” The swarming hornets pressed down on them like a thick cloud of dark ink. Just as they were about to catch up to Liu Nuo ahead, she suddenly tripped. With an “Ouch,” she tumbled to the ground. The immense black swarm, however, flew right past Liu Nuo as if blind, continuing their pursuit of Gu Jiaoyang’s group.
“Bloody hell, that’s unfair! We didn’t even stab your house! Why are you chasing us!”
“Every wrong has its source, every debt its debtor! You can’t be so unreasonable just because you’re insects!”
Zhu Zhengwen looked back at the pursuing hornets and was scared out of his wits. His considerable girth somehow managed to move with surprising agility, maintaining a speed close to an ordinary person’s 100-metre dash.
“Into the water!” Gu Jiaoyang pushed Zhu Zhengwen’s wrist forward, a slight curl to his lips. He grabbed a handful of leaves from a branch nearby and shouted loudly, “Oh dear, I’m scared! Let’s go into the water to hide together!”
In reality, Gu Jiaoyang shoved Zhu Zhengwen straight into the stream. The closely following livestream drone didn’t capture this exact moment because the leaves Gu Jiaoyang grabbed obscured the lens. The drone, struck by the branches, spun around, facing directly towards the oncoming hornet swarm. It was instantly surrounded by the hornets, filling the entire lens and turning the feed completely black.
“Spiritual Sage Sun Radiance, Lock!” Gu Jiaoyang stood on the bank and formed a hand seal. A pale golden shield, like a bubble, immediately enveloped the swarm and the drone, preventing the hornets from attacking anyone else. Trapped inside the golden bubble, they were forced to engage in a battle of attrition with the livestream drone.
Zhu Zhengwen climbed out of the stream, bewildered, and shook the water from his face. He realised Gu Jiaoyang was casting a spell and worried they might have run into some strange, invisible entities. So, Zhu Zhengwen shrank his neck, sat back down in the water, covered his eyes, and quietly watched the fight unfold through the gaps in his fingers.
No wonder Liu Nuo acted so crazy; she must have been possessed. Hopefully, the Master can cure her quickly.
“Little Zhi, get ready! It’s your time to shine!”
Gu Jiaoyang, having trapped the hornets, stood on the stream bank, facing the direction they had come from, and adopted a defensive posture. Li Lili had run far away, and Zhu Zhengwen was on his side, so he had nothing to hold back. He unleashed his full aura, and the small circulation within his body began to churn rapidly.
What? Oh, oh! I’m ready!
The Overseer System could read communication information directly from the user’s consciousness. It responded immediately, activating its system defence and bracing itself for the confrontation.
Gu Jiaoyang wrapped his fingers in spiritual energy and blocked the small knife that sprang out of the thicket’s shadow. He followed up with a jump-kick, intercepting Liu Nuo’s punch which immediately followed the knife attack.
“So fast!”
Her attack thwarted, Liu Nuo immediately resorted to a high-speed physical fight. Gu Jiaoyang was no pushover. He activated his ‘Steel-toothed Little Lamb’ technique, instantly doubling his combat level. Blocking Liu Nuo’s attacks was more than sufficient.
“014, you were disguised pretty well!” Gu Jiaoyang blocked Liu Nuo’s incoming kick, rubbed his wrist, and smiled a smile that held no actual amusement.
“Nonsense!” Liu Nuo didn’t waste any words, continuing her relentless attacks, the small knife in her hand aiming for the vital points on Gu Jiaoyang’s body.
“Well, now, you’re the only villain I’ve met who doesn’t talk too much, but this Young Lord’s patience has limits… Try this! Ha!”
Knowing that his opponent was a virus system, Gu Jiaoyang struck without mercy. With the livestream drone blocked, Gu Jiaoyang adopted the aggressive stance he used when fighting evil spirits back in the day, aiming his blows straight at the joints.
One thing the Overseer System said was true: 014 was fast, but lacked strength. Gu Jiaoyang managed to kick Liu Nuo into a tree, snatching the small knife from her hand.
“Tch, nothing special, is it? Blame yourselves for choosing to provoke me. And you all share one flaw… you’re both wicked and greedy!”
“Little Zhi!”
Grandpa’s mother, you bastard virus, take this from the System.
Avada Kedavra!
Sizzle, sizzle… Ding!
Deletion complete! Pulverization successful!
Gu Jiaoyang released Liu Nuo. Once the System completed the extermination, Liu Nuo’s eyes, previously filled with anger, slowly dimmed. She looked blankly at Gu Jiaoyang for a moment before falling into a deep sleep.
“What were you shouting just now? It made my head hurt.”
After confirming the virus system was completely annihilated, Gu Jiaoyang rubbed his temples and checked the system’s feedback.
Avada Kedavra? That’s the fatal curse I just learned! It sounds more impressive when you shout it! My magic…
Gu Jiaoyang covered his ears. He had absolutely no desire to hear the Overseer System who knows what it had been watching share its newly acquired knowledge. Since the Overseer System resided in his consciousness, he was forced to listen as the thing declared itself a qualified Hogwarts apprentice starting today.
“So, have you received a letter from Hedwig? Are you sure it wasn’t a challenge from the warrior woman Yoll?”
Gu Jiaoyang stretched, not wanting to deal with Liu Nuo, who was sound asleep on the ground.
Jokes aside, Gu Jiaoyang placed the lottery chance redeemed from the suicidal virus system into his inventory. More important than redeeming prizes right now was contemplating the issue of these virus systems.
The reason he was so calm and prepared was that he had guessed 014 hadn’t fled as the Overseer System, Little Zhi, had initially claimed after the failed attack. Based on Little Zhi’s explanation of the virus system hierarchy, the lowest tier was like the old scoundrel’s system blindly casting a wide net to harm society. Stepping up from that, 014, capable of launching a direct attack on him, must have a clear target and the capacity to act, albeit with insufficient attack power.
It was like a video game: the enemy’s strength would increase step by step, becoming harder to deal with. Correspondingly, the enemy’s objectives would also become clearer, and their intense desire to achieve their single goal would intensify.
Given the virus system’s desire to devour the Overseer System and gain world control, 014 might have attempted to test the waters and then continued to lurk, waiting for a second, formal attack.
Compared to him, who carried the Overseer System, the virus systems were even more impatient with delays. The longer they waited, the harder he would become to deal with. If the virus systems could reach him, they would certainly act immediately to eliminate him.
So, Gu Jiaoyang had been carefully observing both Liu Nuo and Li Lili… though he had initially suspected Li Lili more strongly. The woman’s hostility was very obvious; it would have been simplest for the virus system to manipulate her against him. With a little inducement, Li Lili would likely have charged forward recklessly.
If that had happened, he would have had to spend more energy sifting through potential targets; the suspect could have been anyone. That was a terrifying and headache-inducing thought.
The enemy hides in the dark while he stands in the light. This passive position was far from ideal.
“Sigh, what a nuisance.” Gu Jiaoyang sighed after a moment of contemplation, mentally packing this long-term emotional burden away. He decided to deal with problems as they arose. If things got really bad, he would just stay home all day!
“Spiritual Sage Moon Shadow, Release!”
Gu Jiaoyang pulled Zhu Zhengwen ashore. He then jumped into the stream himself to mess up the water, before dissolving the spell on the livestream drone. The hornets, having furiously stung the drone inside the golden bubble until they were exhausted, simply fluttered back to their nest the moment the spell was lifted, believing they had avenged the destruction of their home.
“It should be alright, shouldn’t it?” Gu Jiaoyang picked up the pathetic-looking drone to examine it. Apart from some unknown liquid left on its wings from the high-speed shredding of hornet corpses, everything else was intact; there wasn’t even a small scratch. The lens was only slightly smudged. Gu Jiaoyang wiped it clean and pressed the restart button. As soon as the drone rebooted and returned to its working state, he immediately started acting. He and Zhu Zhengwen sat next to the unconscious Liu Nuo, weeping pitifully.
Meanwhile, the host, seeing the livestream drone’s screen go completely black after being swarmed by hornets, immediately contacted the medical team. So, Gu Jiaoyang didn’t have to feign distress for long before the medical team arrived by helicopter. Liu Nuo, who was still asleep and even lightly snoring, was quickly examined by the medical staff and carried back to the hotel. The diagnosis was simply that Liu Nuo had been startled into unconsciousness.
“That was lucky. If the drone hadn’t drawn the hornets’ attention, we would all have been in trouble.” Gu Jiaoyang pretended to have just survived a crisis. He and Zhu Zhengwen made a token effort to search for Li Lili—who, thankfully, was nowhere to be found. They then took advantage of the stream to light a fire, dry their clothes, and solve the problem of lunch by eating the fish they had caught.
The Orange Blossom app faithfully recorded the twists and turns of Gu Jiaoyang’s livestream.
Wow, the little brother is so cute!!! I’m in love with him!
Look at the little brother smelling the flowers!!! Wow, wow, wow, the drone is so intelligent!!! That close-up was so timely! Confirmed Eyelash God!
The environment in the forest is truly wonderful! I want to go travelling when I have time!
…
Hahahaha, Piggy is indeed the Piggy of Destiny. I won’t lie; I’ll be honest. Our Piggy’s traffic is actually real!
So, Piggy, how many of your own kind did you eat? Dog head.
Does this mean we won at the starting line!!! Well done!!
…
What confusing behaviour?
No, I’m thinking, if your Yangyang hadn’t insisted on going to look at the hornet nest, would Nuo Nuo have poked it?
Hah? I think this woman is toxic, alright? She’s an adult, and she pokes a hornet nest with a stick?
Ugh, this is too much. What little brother? He ran off when danger struck and didn’t care about his female companions. I’m genuinely disgusted. You’re following someone with such poor character?
Ridiculous, alright? Whose responsibility is it? Please clean out your mouth before you speak, alright?
…
Holy crap, holy crap, stop arguing, it’s a black screen!
We’re finished. The little brother’s peerless beauty is gone!
Someone’s going to die! Where are the organisers??? Don’t they check for danger?
I told you we shouldn’t have participated in this wilderness survival… See? Something happened, didn’t it?
…
The comments section was full of all kinds of frantic discussion. Dai Gucan frowned and closed his phone, pinching the bridge of his nose.
He had just finished his meeting and hadn’t seen the moment the screen went black, only seeing Gu Jiaoyang calmly grilling fish after things had settled down. Since Gu Jiaoyang seemed fine, he turned off his phone.
“Boss.” The secretary placed a document in front of Dai Gucan, adjusted his glasses, and slowly began to speak.
“The share exchange was successful. Our team also picked up some news when they returned: Little CEO He’s man, Li Mengshen, was also there. All we know is that Li Mengshen tried to negotiate a deal with Orange Blossom, but Orange Blossom hasn’t committed.”
“It’s about the performance contract, isn’t it?” Dai Gucan opened the file, quickly scanned a few lines, and signed his name.
“Yes. Li Mengshen intends to maliciously squeeze the traffic of the artists under his management. They want to use the Orange Blossom platform as a battleground…”
“Orange Blossom won’t agree.” Dai Gucan interrupted the secretary, sounding as if he already knew the outcome perfectly.
“?” The secretary paused, confused.
“The dumping ground for capital battles has its place. Orange Blossom is a cultural community. If Orange Blossom’s executives still want to list by the end of the year, they must consider the repercussions if they accept this condition, despite the massive short-term traffic increase.” Dai Gucan smiled coldly, though the coldness was clearly directed at the young CEO He.
“They have been walking on eggshells for so many years; they understand the rules better than most. Keep investing, and also prepare an account. Go keep an eye on Red Blog, compile the data, and send it over. Prepare to divest.”
“Yes.” The secretary took the file, his admiration for his boss involuntarily rising a notch.
Although the boss didn’t explicitly say so, he was hinting at the situation with Emperor Sky Entertainment, and the secretary benefited greatly from the insight!
After the secretary left, Dai Gucan stood up and walked to the window. His phone was open to the calendar page. The date a week from now was circled in red. Dai Gucan stared at this special marker for a long time before circling one more date next to the first one.
“Why are you coming back now, Aunt?”
Dai Gucan closed his eyes and pressed his face against the cold glass, as if trying to use the chill to stimulate his burdened mind.
He had suffered alone for so many years and had only recently found some relief. Yet, the anxiety that erupted upon hearing news of his aunt, Qin Yuan, was impossible to ignore. It was like a dark mire, attempting to drag him down and drown him, just as it had done long ago.
“Yangyang… what should I do…”
In the huge office, this faint whisper was like dust. It vanished before one could listen closely.
