- Chapter 39 - I'm Sorry
When Dai Gucan arrived at the police station, the first thing he saw was his little boyfriend sitting obediently on a chair, dozing off. His two small hands, stained with blood, rested on the table while a policewoman next to him wiped them gently with a damp towel.
“What happened? Are you hurt?” Dai Gucan assumed Gu Jiaoyang had been bullied. Seeing the blood on his hands, anger instantly flared up. He strode over, squatted beside the chair, and picked up the hand that hadn’t been wiped yet, examining it for a long time. Only upon realising that the blood didn’t belong to Gu Jiaoyang did his heart ache. He took the damp towel from the policewoman’s hand and began wiping it himself.
The policewoman beside them was startled by Dai Gucan’s imposing aura. For a moment, she didn’t react, allowing him to snatch the towel right out of her hand.
“Excuse me, sir…” Just as the policewoman mustered the courage to frown and speak up, she was frightened by the look Dai Gucan shot her—a look filled with intense personal emotion. However, she immediately thought that this man was likely a suspect who had groomed the well-behaved boy into a relationship. Her maternal instincts exploded; she stood up abruptly, her expression darkening as she pulled out a pair of silver handcuffs.
“Sir, because you are suspected of soliciting a minor and exhibiting violent tendencies, please cooperate with our investigation!” The policewoman snatched the towel back from Mr Dai’s hand, holding up the handcuffs with righteous indignation.
“Mm… Mr Dai? I’m so sleepy, I want to go home…” Gu Jiaoyang appeared to have been napping on the chair, but in reality, his spirit had projected out to check on the old scoundrel and Zhou Cheng being rushed to the hospital. The old scoundrel and Zhou Cheng had been beaten severely. Although he hadn’t aimed for lethal points, Gu Jiaoyang had targeted the areas that hurt the most. The old scoundrel had fainted from the sheer pain. As for Zhou Cheng… he was in a worse state. Having been scratched so many times by the vengeful spirit and then possessed, he likely didn’t have many days left to live.
When his spirit returned, he mumbled a few words and opened his eyes, only to stumble upon the scene of the policewoman holding handcuffs, ready to enforce the law on Mr Dai.
“Officer! He really is my fiancé!” Gu Jiaoyang woke up instantly, pulling Mr Dai behind him to block the policewoman.
“Officer, we are mutually in love, really. I’m an adult! I just look young,” Gu Jiaoyang explained helplessly. Looking like this really wasn’t his fault.
The policewoman remained somewhat guarded. After all, Dai Gucan was a large, tall man. Although he was handsome, his presence was overpowering, and he had a fierce look on his face. He didn’t look at all like someone who would be in a serious, loving relationship with a young boy; he looked more like a bad element plotting something nefarious.
“What’s going on? Oh, come on, sister, you can’t arrest him. Mr Dai brought his documents. We just verified it; the lad is indeed an adult. They probably made the relationship official right after the college entrance exams. Take a look.” A male police officer who had just entered from the doorway paused at the standoff inside. He scratched his crew cut sheepishly and handed the documents Dai Gucan had brought to the female officer.
“Is that so? Apologies, sir, I was too vigilant.” After checking the household register and ID card, the policewoman finally let down her guard, blushing as she apologised to Dai Gucan.
It turned out to be a misunderstanding. The boy had indeed been an adult for six months, and Mr Dai was a respectable, successful adult. They were just in a committed relationship and not yet married.
Initially, they thought Mr Dai had induced a minor into a relationship and tricked them into marriage, so their tone and attitude towards him had been admittedly poor.
But since it was a consensual relationship, they couldn’t say anything. Out of concern, they simply gave Mr Dai a brief lesson on the law, clarifying the important parts of the Marriage Law, before letting the two of them leave.
Although the police had explained the sequence of events to Dai Gucan, after getting into the car, Dai Gucan still asked Gu Jiaoyang again. It wasn’t that he didn’t trust the police, but their account was too objective and they weren’t the ones involved; he couldn’t discern from their words whether his little boyfriend had been frightened.
“It happened like this…” Gu Jiaoyang curled up in the back seat. He hadn’t expected to cause such trouble for Mr Dai, so he narrated the entire story without missing a single word, including the relationships involving the little hedgehog, Zhu Zhengwen, Zhou Cheng, and the old scoundrel.
“I originally only planned to save Zhu Zhengwen’s life, but I didn’t expect that old man to have committed so many evils. If Nuomi didn’t have high cultivation preventing him from being swallowed directly, Nuomi probably wouldn’t have met me. Furthermore, that old man planned to lure me out by recasting the spell so he could devour my cultivation. So, I couldn’t control myself for a moment and beat him up.”
“…However, I placed a curse on him. The backlash is enough to make him wish he were dead.”
Gu Jiaoyang paused at this point. He wanted to maintain a soft, cute, and innocent image for Mr Dai, but there were some things he didn’t want to hide from him.
Ultimately, he was also a man; he had his own grit and dominant side. Even if he liked being soft in front of Mr Dai to make him blush, he was still a little sheep with steel teeth capable of biting a big bad wolf.
“As for Zhou Cheng, it’s a long story… our grudge started from…”
“…He probably won’t live for more than a few days. With the vengeful spirit present, his death will be very ugly.”
Throughout the journey, Gu Jiaoyang curled up in the back seat, speaking slowly. Dai Gucan drove in silence the entire time. Even when they arrived home, Dai Gucan remained silent. This eerie silence made Gu Jiaoyang’s heart sink.
It seemed Mr Dai couldn’t accept his true nature.
Gu Jiaoyang couldn’t help but think of the stories he had heard in his circle. Most normal people actually couldn’t accept their other half being a cultivator. Because cultivators were constantly accompanied by death, exorcising demons and banishing evil. They encountered many bizarre things and delved deep into the ugliness of human nature, viewing death as commonplace and not treating the passing of life as a tearful farewell.
The path of cultivation was ancient and long; the path of ruthlessness was the longest. Thus, those who speak of the Dao are often ruthless.
Perhaps Mr Dai also thought he was just a ruthless cultivation machine.
“I’ll go up first.”
Realising this, Gu Jiaoyang returned to his room dejectedly and buried himself under the duvet. Usually accustomed to being playful and cheeky, perhaps influenced by this body, he actually began to cry habitually.
“If you don’t accept it, just say so. Why give me the silent treatment…” Gu Jiaoyang buried his face in the duvet, shedding tears in a muffled silence, until the room door opened.
“What are you doing?” Gu Jiaoyang was dug out of the duvet by Dai Gucan, keeping his head low to avoid looking at Dai Gucan’s face.
He wasn’t a masochist who insisted on seeing the expression of someone who didn’t like him.
“…” Dai Gucan placed the medicinal liniment on the bedside table. Seeing Gu Jiaoyang with his head down, sobbing and trembling, refusing to look at him, his heart had long since melted into a puddle.
“I’m sorry…”
“Hmph…” Upon hearing Dai Gucan start with that, Gu Jiaoyang’s brain automatically filled in the rest of the sentence.
Things like “I’m sorry, we really aren’t suitable…” or “I’m sorry, I believe you can find someone better than me…”
In short, Gu Jiaoyang mentally filled in all sorts of melodramatic rejection lines. His tears fell like broken beads, costing nothing, and soon a large patch of the bedsheet was wet.
“I’m sorry, I’m sorry… I’m a bastard…” Seeing Gu Jiaoyang crying so hard, Dai Gucan felt as if his heart was being tightly squeezed. Ignoring the bruises on Gu Jiaoyang’s hand for a moment, he hurriedly cupped the pitifully small face, which fit entirely in one of his palms, and began kissing it.
“It’s my fault… I’ve been too busy recently and neglected you. I know you’re hurting. I let you face so many bad things all on your own… It’s my mistake… I’m sorry…”
“I haven’t dated before… I’m sorry… I know I’m not a qualified or responsible boyfriend…”
“I’m sorry… I promise there won’t be a next time… Stop crying, Yangyang… I will never let you suffer such grievances again…”
“I don’t care about those scumbags and bastards… Yangyang, you’re too soft-hearted… Will you tell me if anything happens? I am your boyfriend. If you are wronged, you must tell me immediately. It doesn’t matter, even if I’m in a meeting, you can call me. The entire Dai Corporation belongs to us; I am your reliance and your backing…”
“Hic?” Gu Jiaoyang, having his face held and kissed repeatedly by Dai Gucan, who wore an expression of deep reflection and wrongdoing, was thoroughly choked up.
Who am I? Where am I? What did Mr Dai just say?
Nothing was more confusing than slapping oneself in the face with one’s own assumptions.
He had originally thought Dai Gucan’s silence was a prelude to breaking up, but who could have guessed that Mr Dai had actually been reflecting on himself the entire journey after hearing his story?
“I…” Gu Jiaoyang didn’t know how to respond. Before he could wipe his tears, laugh three times, and show a revitalised expression, Dai Gucan, filled with immense guilt, picked him up and personally changed him into loungewear. Holding Gu Jiaoyang’s small hand, which had several bruises from hitting people, he gently applied the medicinal liniment and blew on it. Then, he carried Gu Jiaoyang, who was still hiccuping from crying, to his own room, went downstairs to cook personally, and brought the food up to feed him.
He even waited a while after they finished eating and washing up before going to the study to retrieve a share transfer contract for Gu Jiaoyang to sign.
At first, Gu Jiaoyang felt a bit embarrassed, thinking this apology gift was too expensive, and refused to accept it. However, Dai Gucan felt even more guilty, claiming that apart from these suitable shares, he couldn’t think of any other way, and that he was truly incompetent. He looked so devoid of hope that Gu Jiaoyang was frightened into signing and accepting it. However, inwardly, he decided to buy a safe to lock the contract away, determined not to use this heartfelt gift casually.
Don’t look down on just 2%; this was enough capital to sit as an equal with some of the shareholders who held a small portion of real power during Dai Gucan’s meetings.
Gu Jiaoyang hugged the contract as if he were hugging a golden hen that laid endless golden eggs… no, a phoenix. Hugging this phoenix, he almost stood on the bed with hands on his hips shouting “Gulala Darkness God, hahahaha transform into riches”, but was then scooped into Dai Gucan’s arms, covered with the duvet, and lulled to sleep with a storybook.
“And the Prince and the Beast lived happily ever after.” Dai Gucan turned off the tablet and looked down at Gu Jiaoyang, who was sleeping soundly curled in his arms. He reached out to move his soft little boyfriend into a fixed position, ensuring Gu Jiaoyang wasn’t sniffing or wanting to cry anymore, before heaving a sigh of relief. He turned off the light, lay back under the covers, and continued to hold Gu Jiaoyang against his chest in a protective, spooning posture. With his other hand, he switched on his phone and silently recited the guide on “How to coax a wife who has been wronged” from a webpage several times, ensuring he remembered every point before turning off his phone and closing his eyes to sleep.
