- Chapter 2 - A New Body
“Mmm…”
Gu Jiaoyang woke up right at lunchtime. The early June sun streamed in through the floor-to-ceiling windows, feeling warm and toasty against his face.
He sat up and looked around. His whole body felt refreshed, as if he had consumed some spirit pill that boosted one’s cultivation base.
“Where is this… Master? Junior Brother? Is anyone there?”
Gu Jiaoyang climbed out of bed, his feet sinking into the soft carpet as he scanned the unfamiliar room.
The decor was dominated by dark greys, blacks, and whites. At a glance, this was clearly the territory of a dull, rigid, middle-aged man. The furnishings were all streamlined—square, sharp, and metallic. It was a bit too simplistic, a world away from the style of his Senior Sister’s room, which was always stuffed to the rafters with dolls.
Gu Jiaoyang stood by the bedside table and reached out to touch a vase that was hollow and held no flowers. He knew for a fact he wasn’t in an illusion; as a descendant of an Immortal Sect, he at least had that much discernment.
Unable to call anyone over, Gu Jiaoyang looked out at the garden beyond the French windows. The massive stretch of green turf was definitely not something his master who was broke yet stingy could afford for their dormitory. There was even a golf course next to it, and if he wasn’t mistaken, the woods nearby seemed to be enclosed within the property too.
Forgive his ignorance, but even on the outskirts, land like this cost tens of thousands per square metre. A three-storey villa of this size… could it belong to one of the aristocratic families of the Capital? Since when did the Capital have space for this much greenery?
Too lazy to use his spiritual energy to investigate his surroundings, Gu Jiaoyang rubbed his lower back. The hearty, unbridled intimacy he’d experienced in the ‘illusion’ had been exceptionally realistic; the stimulation had been so intense his waist felt as if it were about to snap.
Though, truthfully, he was left wanting more.
Thinking this, Gu Jiaoyang nudged the deep grey checkered glass coffee table with his toe. Not a single fingerprint on it; clearly unused.
But it didn’t matter where he was. With his current cultivation, he could easily thrash half the Capital without breaking a sweat.
“Hah… Master isn’t here, and Junior Brother is missing too.” Gu Jiaoyang yawned. Although he had been walking the path of cultivation for years and his skin never got oily, he still had the habit of washing his face after sleeping.
Having toured the bedroom, he headed for the bathroom. Since the bedroom was huge, the bathroom was naturally grand as well. Past the semi-circular bathtub near the entrance, a large mirror covered most of the wall above the sink.
Gu Jiaoyang turned his head to look at the tub, thinking the owner of this room certainly knew a thing or two about romance such a massive bathtub connected to the bedroom by transparent glass.
“Bloody hell, who is this?!”
Arriving in front of the vanity, he yawned again. It took a moment for his eyes to focus on the reflection, at which point his mouth froze mid-yawn.
Staring back at him from the mirror was a boy with slightly curly black hair. He was 1.8 metres tall at most, with large irises, a decent nose bridge, and a smallish mouth. He looked for all the world like a naive, unweaned puppy.
“You… you’re joking. Did I literally die of pleasure in that realm created by the artifact and borrow a corpse to reincarnate?”
Gu Jiaoyang propped one hand against the mirror to confirm it was indeed glass, not a projection screen or a painting. With his other hand, he pinched his cheek and definitely felt the pain.
Attempting to circulate his spiritual energy to inspect his internal state, Gu Jiaoyang realised he had indeed taken possession of a new body. The bone age was just a few months past eighteen, and his original cultivation had plummeted all the way down to the Qi Refining stage.
The absolute bottom of the cultivation ladder. A total newbie.
“Good lord… so milky. Look at the flesh on this face, tsk tsk tsk. Senior Sister would absolutely love this type!”
Not one to overthink things, Gu Jiaoyang patted the cheeks of his new body. He had to admire the smooth texture of the skin. His original body, in his twenties, had possessed a stoic, ascetic poker face that terrified everyone into silence. Even when he went to a bar looking for a bit of fun, he’d been mistaken for an undercover police officer on patrol.
If his original looks hadn’t been so severe, he wouldn’t have been single for over twenty years without finding a single good man.
Starting over on a new account wasn’t a major issue in the eyes of a cultivator. He just wondered if his physical remains would be refined by his Junior Brother or his Senior Sister. If it was his Senior Sister, she would almost certainly strip off his shirt and dress his corpse in a skirt.
Ugh!
Gu Jiaoyang shook his head to banish that thought. He decided he’d better cultivate until he had enough power to protect himself, then hurry back to find his Senior Sister and demand his body back.
Gu Jiaoyang looked down and patted himself all over, marvelling that this young lad had a decent figure, albeit a bit thin. He checked for any peculiarities to avoid injuring himself by using his powerful soul to control this unfamiliar, fragile newbie body.
The Qi Refining stage was considered ‘newbie’ territory, but in his sect, it meant one had officially stepped into the trade. His sect’s cultivation speed was extremely fast; disciples often reached the Golden Core level by twenty-seven or twenty-eight. However, members of his sect usually started at six and reached Foundation Establishment by eight, so being at Qi Refining at eighteen was frankly a bit of a “late bloomer”.
Unlike traditional cultivation, most members of his sect possessed ‘rootless’ spiritual veins also known as Heavenly Spiritual Roots. However, there was a distinction; while Heavenly Roots usually had an attribute like Ice or Fire, his sect mostly had no attribute at all, simply circulating source spiritual energy. Thus, they could also be called Five-Element Spiritual Roots.
In short, it was an existence that could be either god-tier or trash-tier. Most outsiders simply called them Chaos Spiritual Roots.
Gu Jiaoyang checked his dantian and was surprised to find this boy also possessed a Chaos Spiritual Root. One had to understand that the probability of this was infinitesimally small worldwide. Even counting the Sect Leader and his Master, there were only four people in his entire sect with it.
Yes, the entire sect consisted of four people. No wonder his Master was so stingy.
Having familiarised himself with the body, Gu Jiaoyang washed his face and went back to lie on the bed. He intended to sift through the original owner’s memories to see if any blood relatives were still alive.
Besides, with such glorious sunshine, wasn’t the correct course of action to lie in bed and bask in it?
Gu Jiaoyang stretched lazily and buried himself back under the duvet.
Solar True Qi was a rare and precious thing. If you looked into a cultivation community when the weather was nice, you wouldn’t see quilts or clothes drying on the railings you’d see rows of snoring cultivators.
Solar True Qi and Lunar True Qi these two energies could only be gathered by spending time drying out in the sun or moon; there was no shortcut.
So, when Dai Gucan pushed open the bedroom door carrying a bowl of crucian carp soup, the first thing he saw was a little lazy cat curled up on his bed, dozing in the sun. The pale golden sunlight washed over the boy’s face, highlighting the fine, soft down on his skin. The limp hair atop his head caught the light, shining with a brilliance that was almost blinding.
Dai Gucan’s footsteps faltered. His heart gave an inexplicable flutter, a sensation that came and went so quickly he almost mistook it for an illusion.
