- Chapter 15 - The Northeasterner
When it came to Mr. Dai’s “industry legends,” there were truly all sorts of versions, but in the minds of these second- and third-generation young masters in Changjing, what stuck was his excellence how he built his own business empire at such a young age.
As for the “legends” concerning Mr. Dai’s own generation, most parents, for the sake of their own reputation, never discussed them with their offspring.
Whose reputation were they protecting? Their own, naturally.
There were only a few schools in Changjing, and due to resource sharing, they often collaborated, holding several joint competitions every year. Therefore, nothing that happened within those schools could be kept a secret; before long, every student in Changjing would know the full story.
As fate would have it, Mr. Dai had been one of the most prominent figures back then, infamous among his peers. However, the circles in his generation, and those above and below, generally preferred not to speak of it.
So, Mr. Dai, whose image was still vividly fresh in the memories of the parents of the men opposite, let out a deep breath. He shoved his little lamb around the corner of the corridor and undid the top button of his shirt collar.
Since the other party had called him “Uncle,” the least he could do was help that boy’s parents reminisce about their youthful school days.
“What are you doing?” He Shengxuan saw Dai Gucan rubbing his wrist with a dark expression and instantly panicked, retreating a few steps to lean on his underling. His feigned arrogance and inner cowardice were fully on display.
Dai Gucan rarely smiled these days; his expressions were usually confined to his internal thoughts. Therefore, the slight curve of his lips now made He Shengxuan’s calves start shaking.
“Y-y-y-you don’t come any closer! I’m telling you, I’m the He family’s Third Young Master! If you lay a finger on me, our He Group will absolutely not let you get away with it!”
Dai Gucan, standing nearly 6’3″ with a commanding presence, slowly approached He Shengxuan. Without listening to the younger man’s escalating threats, he took a large step forward, grabbed He Shengxuan by the collar, and given the man’s height of barely 5’8″ dragged him mid-air like a baby chick straight into the men’s toilet.
He Shengxuan’s hangers-on exchanged nervous glances, pushing and nudging each other, too afraid to get involved. Dai Gucan’s gaze and intimidating aura had been too terrifying. These friends, who were only around for the lavish lifestyle, were happy to share wealth, but suffering together was out of the question.
So, they pretended they saw nothing and quickly scattered.
Gu Jiaoyang had been pushed to the side of the corridor. Seeing Mr. Dai manfully grab the man’s collar; he suppressed his curiosity and stood near the washroom entrance.
In the original novel, wasn’t Mr. Dai supposed to be the devoted male lead? Didn’t he promise to be gentle and affectionate, the type who wouldn’t fight back or curse?
He’s not actually going to hit him, is he?
Presumably because they were the only two in the men’s room, Dai Gucan let go of his restrained facade. He threw He Shengxuan onto a marble sink, and spoke with an ugly expression.
“You little sh*t, got the guts to say that again to my face? Eh?”
Dai Gucan clenched his fist. He was tall, and his fist was proportionally large. The crisp sound of his knuckles cracking echoed in the washroom, sounding ominously like breaking bones.
He Shengxuan, whose hipbone was throbbing after hitting the marble sink, became defensive. Clutching his side and glaring, he started shouting insults.
“I said it, so what! Bah! You’re supposed to be high society in Changjing! What sort of upbringing is this, so crude! I said it, so what! This is a society governed by law… Ah!!”
“Oh, got some backbone, have you? Letting you run your mouth, then. Where did you get that mouth blessed, or did your mother give birth to you arse-first? Did you expletive?”
Dai Gucan was furious just looking at the bloke. Any normal person, when asked in this situation if they dared to say it again, would have the sense to shut up.
Never mind apologising, why would you be such a jerk and keep arguing back?
Didn’t he know the phrase, “Act first, talk later?”
Wasn’t he just asking for a beating?
So what if it was a lawful society? Insulting someone’s character was also illegal, and this little sh*t did it anyway. He decided to find a spot without CCTV, beat him into a pulp, and teach that big mouth a lesson.
With that, Mr. Dai delivered a punch straight to He Shengxuan’s chest, sending the man reeling against the marble sink, his face draining of colour. He sat on the floor, gasping for air, unable to catch his breath.
“What’s up, then? Had enough already? Come on, keep yakking! Go on, then, yak-yak-yak! Weren’t you acting tough just now? I told you to run your mouth, so why’ve you shut up? Sitting on the floor isn’t that minging?”
After delivering the punch, Dai Gucan stood to the side, tilting his head as he spoke.
“Look at you, you useless lump. Exactly the same as your brother.”
“Hmph. Your brother. I’ve still got a score to settle with your brother. Consider yourself lucky today; my little lamb is waiting for me outside. Tsk, idiot. Your dear brother tells you a couple of lies, and you come stampeding up to me, kicking off. What’s the matter? Didn’t your brother tell you I hit people? Didn’t your dad tell you? When I was kicking off in big fights, your old man was the one wetting himself, crying his eyes out while hugging a baseball bat!”
“And you’re tiny, which is bad enough, but your brain’s not much bigger either. No wonder you can’t compete with your brother at anything.”
He Shengxuan was hit so hard by Dai Gucan’s powerful punch that he nearly passed out. Hearing Dai Gucan’s language suddenly change, full of barbed mockery, he nearly spat up a mouthful of blood as he sat on the floor.
Dai Gucan was right. He had indeed been egged on by his brother to rush over and battle the man. But the most hurtful part was Dai Gucan saying he couldn’t compete with his brother at anything! This was the biggest insult he had ever faced!
The ultimate humiliation! An irreconcilable hatred! You dared to set me up!
He Shengyuan, you bloody well wait for me!
He Shengxuan, sitting on the ground barely able to move, swallowed his anger but finally understood the meaning of knowing his place. He shifted his hatred entirely onto his brother, He Shengyuan.
Seeing He Shengxuan sitting there, pale and trembling, unable to utter a single word, Dai Gucan slowly straightened his cuffs, buttoned his collar, and smoothed down the fleeting, non-existent creases in his suit against the mirror. He then resumed his usual expressionless Mr. Dai CEO demeanour.
However, because a cultivator’s senses were exceptionally sharp, Gu Jiaoyang had heard the entire conversation perfectly, despite the washroom’s soundproofing. The moment Dai Gucan spoke his first sentence, thick with that strong Northeastern dialect, Gu Jiaoyang felt his mind completely freeze and shatter.
Excuse me?
Dai Gucan is a Northeasterner??? A Northeast version of a CEO Boss?!
No, surely the original novel didn’t lie to me?
This “gentle and devoted” male lead?
When declaring his love to the protagonist uke, gripping his neck and saying: “Mate… I’m dead keen on you, I am!”
???
Gu Jiaoyang, screaming internally like a groundhog, furiously cycled through the image of Dai the Boss declaring his love to the protagonist uke while holding a massive Northeast firework and yelling, “Mate, I’m dead keen on you!” He finally snapped out of his shock and couldn’t help but laugh out loud.
How did the protagonist uke manage to stay with the male lead without laughing until his stomach cramped up?
“Are you… going to use the toilet? This one’s blocked. Go use another one.” Dai Gucan had just composed himself and opened the door, only to see the little lamb standing there, trying to stifle a laugh.
Why is he acting so odd?
Dai Gucan quickly dismissed the thought and pulled Gu Jiaoyang away without dwelling on it. He Shengxuan was still sitting on the toilet floor; he couldn’t let his sweet little lamb see that. What if he caught the man’s idiocy?
Gu Jiaoyang was steered by Dai Gucan, picked up the clothes he’d changed out of, and walked out of the floor.
Having grown used to the lift ride earlier, Dai Gucan naturally continued to keep Gu Jiaoyang close in his arms. Gu Jiaoyang was more than happy to lean on his chest muscle.
“You and that man… you’ve got bad blood?” Gu Jiaoyang rubbed his head against Dai Gucan’s chest. His slightly curly hair brushed against the thin shirt, like a soft brush stroking Dai Gucan’s front, almost reaching his heart.
Why is he being flirtatious again?
The young man’s scent had a hint of milk, mixed with the yang energy of sufficient sunlight, giving him a warm, dry feelingu nlike the clammy sweatiness of most overly energetic boys his age.
Dai Gucan’s fingers twitched, wanting to reach down and pat the soft head on his chest, but he only flexed his fingers and relaxed them again.
“Not exactly. The He family business is only in Changjing and isn’t very large. We just have some overlapping interests,” Dai Gucan paused, then added, “I have a working relationship with Mr. He, and I have some competitive projects with the He family’s Second Young Master.”
“Second Young Master He? Didn’t he inherit the He family business?” Gu Jiaoyang asked. Why would the father and son not be in the same company?
“No. Second Young Master He started his own venture, Xihe Pharmaceutical.” Dai Gucan spoke without much admiration, indicating that the Second Young Master He’s self-started business didn’t hold much promise in the eyes of this seasoned businessman.
“Xihe Pharmaceutical?” Gu Jiaoyang choked.
He had received far too much information in one morning.
First, Mr. Dai was actually a Northeasterner, although Mr. Dai probably didn’t know he had found out.
Then, “Xihe Pharmaceutical.”
The name of the white-lotus, universally admired protagonist uke in the original novel was “Xichuan Bai.”
“Xihe Pharmaceutical” sounded like the love child of the protagonist seme and Xichuan Bai, but in reality, Xihe Pharmaceutical was simply named after “hope” plus the He surname. And the name of this pharmaceutical company was the starting point for the protagonist seme and Xichuan Bai’s entire dramatic love story.
Xichuan Bai was the eldest son of the Changjing Xi family, who had been separated from his family. That’s right, the true eldest son who was switched at birth by the mistress and the nanny, after the original wife was killed.
That meant the Third Young Master He they had just encountered was Xichuan Bai’s biological elder brother.
His real biological brother, born of the same father. But how the Third Young Master He, who should have been named Xi, became the He family heir was a scandalous family secret, waiting to be unearthed by the protagonist uke.
Although Gu Jiaoyang had the script, he had discovered that some things had changed when projected into the real world. However, this didn’t prevent him from feeling intense “sympathy” for He Shengxuan a minor villain who, upon discovering the protagonist uke was his brother, went irreversibly down the path of trying to sabotage the protagonist seme.
Tsk, tsk, tsk. Wealthy families truly are a factory for melodrama.
