After Transmigrating as the "Green Tea" Fake Heiress, I Got My Happy Ending with the Real Heiress - Chapter 38
Chapter 38
Feeling the coolness coming from the back of her hand, Wen Yun quickly squeezed back and, as a matter of course, put her arm around Ruan Yu’s shoulder.
“I’m here with you, don’t be afraid.”
She kept her arm around Ruan Yu as they walked together through the elevated corridor between the laboratory and teaching buildings.
The corridor windows weren’t all closed, and there were puddles everywhere on the floor. They carefully navigated around them. When they passed an open window, Wen Yun instinctively stepped in front of Ruan Yu and casually closed the window.
“Let’s wait in the classroom until the rain stops before we leave,” she told Ruan Yu. “It’s raining too hard; even with an umbrella, we’d get soaked.”
Ruan Yu had no objection, but she looked worriedly at Wen Yun’s right arm.
When closing the window, Wen Yun had clearly gotten wet, and her uniform had turned a darker color, but she didn’t seem to care at all.
Once they were back in the classroom, Ruan Yu saw that He Sheng wasn’t there. She put down her backpack at her desk, immediately grabbed a box of tissues, and walked over to Wen Yun’s seat. She efficiently pulled out two sheets and started wiping the rainwater off Wen Yun’s uniform.
Wen Yun had intended to wipe it herself and was completely surprised that someone else was faster. She was stunned for a moment. When she came to her senses and saw three soaked wads of tissue already on the table, the words to politely decline got stuck in her throat. Instead, she said, “Thank you…”
Because it was still raining, even though they could leave for dinner early, there were still at least twenty students in the classroom, chattering as they compared answers. Not many people noticed their situation.
The students sitting in front and behind Wen Yun hadn’t left, and they watched in shock. Then, they heard Ruan Yu intentionally lowering her voice to ask, “When you shielded me from the rain, didn’t you consider that you would also get wet?”
The girl’s voice was still very soft and didn’t sound like complaint or blame at all; rather, it seemed more like… the excitement of being protected??
The straight-A students around them didn’t quite understand, but they were very surprised.
Wen Yun was also confused and answered casually, “Well, I still had to shield you, or your backpack would have gotten soaked.”
“Is a backpack more important than a person?” Ruan Yu countered.
Wen Yun: ???
She was stumped and didn’t know how to respond for a moment. After a few seconds, she shook her head. “No, the person is the most important.”
Preventing the backpack from getting wet was just an afterthought. She primarily didn’t want Ruan Yu to get wet.
But Ruan Yu’s train of thought… why couldn’t she keep up?
She heard a soft “Oh” in her ear, and another tissue was pulled out and gently pressed against her arm.
“The rain is stopping,” Ruan Yu said less than ten seconds later. “Should we go home?”
On the way home, Wen Yun vaguely sensed that Ruan Yu’s mood was somewhat subtle.
She couldn’t discern if it was joy or anger, or a mix of both, which left her utterly confused.
Ruan Yu seemed happy when she first saw her outside the exam hall, so how did her mood change just because Wen Yun closed a window and got a little wet?
Wen Yun increasingly felt that the protagonist’s personality was like a cat, perhaps because they had a cat at home now.
Moody and unpredictable.
—But also very easy to soothe.
She merely tentatively apologized and said, “I won’t ignore myself next time.” At this, the girl’s serious face instantly broke into a smile again.
With so many instances of being “easy to soothe,” Wen Yun couldn’t help but hope the protagonist was only like this with her and was actually a sweet-on-the-outside-dark-on-the-inside type, remaining vigilant toward outsiders deep down.
Otherwise, she was too easily deceived, which was quite worrying.
Even though the October subject exams were over, the study pace for the senior high students didn’t slow down much before the results were released.
In the words of the homeroom teacher: “This is the first elective exam for most of you. No one has experience, so you must be ready to fight again in April!”
However, since the school sports meet at the end of October was still happening, and the seniors had to participate, the day after the exams ended, the sports representative started going from student to student during breaks with the sign-up sheet.
While Wen Yun liked to exercise, she always declined participating in the sports meet. When asked, she said she might be on her period during those days, with severe reactions.
The sports representative, a girl, understood immediately. She nodded and moved on to the next person.
Once she left, Wen Yun went back to her desk to try and catch up on sleep.
She hadn’t slept for long when she heard Ruan Yu’s calm and composed voice coming from behind: “I want to sign up for the 3000-meter race.”
This startled Wen Yun instantly awake. She turned around in surprise, only to see the sports representative beaming, repeatedly agreeing: “Got it! I’ll put your name down!”
Although the class was generally enthusiastic about signing up for events, the 3000-meter was the one event everyone shied away from every year.
The distance was simply too long, and the depletion of physical strength and willpower was too great. Even though finishing meant earning admiration and an encouragement prize that added points to the class score, the pain of the process was often more than the average person could bear.
In previous years, no one signed up, and the sports representative had to grit her teeth and run it herself. She never imagined she wouldn’t have to run this year. She couldn’t have been happier.
One person’s joy is another’s sorrow. Wen Yun was deeply troubled now.
This was another plot point not present in the original novel. In the novel, Ruan Yu was pushed during a morning run by someone who disliked her before the exams, injuring her hands and feet. She could only sit in the stands during the sports meet, minimizing movement, and couldn’t even conveniently deliver the broadcast scripts.
Now, she and Ruan Yu had teamed up to deal with the two malicious female side characters before the exams. The plot point of being pushed during the run never happened, so Ruan Yu was able to approach the upcoming sports meet with a healthy body.
This was a good thing, and Wen Yun could understand Ruan Yu wanting to participate in an event or two to make up for the regrets of her past life.
The problem was that Ruan Yu chose the 3000-meter race!
What if someone in the class colluded with a competitor and deliberately tripped Ruan Yu during the race?! The injury plot might be unavoidable now!
However, since this was Ruan Yu’s own choice, Wen Yun couldn’t stop her. After silently complaining for a moment, she could only sigh and let it go. She took out her phone and sent a message to Lin Qiqi.
Cloud: “Xiao Yu signed up for the 3000-meter race. Can you keep an eye on that small group during this time? If there are any plans targeting Xiaoyu, be sure to tell me immediately!”
Lin Qiqi was in the restroom. When she returned and saw the message, she was so shocked that she immediately sent her a “Holy Crap” emoji.
Cute Sweetheart Qiqi: “3000 METERS!!! A warrior!! The glory of the class! Yunyun, don’t worry, I promise to thoroughly scout the enemy!”
Even with her best friend’s assurance, Wen Yun still felt it wasn’t enough. She went online to search for anti-fall and lightweight protective gear.
The next day, Ruan Yu returned home and was secretly opening the newly arrived body pillow in the storage room. She heard footsteps behind her.
She instantly turned around, alert, to see Wen Yun standing at the door of the storage room, holding an express box.
Their eyes met. Wen Yun hesitated for a moment but carried the box inside and started opening it with her, intending to give Ruan Yu the protective gear in advance.
They silently unwrapped the packages they held, not looking at what the other had bought.
However, Ruan Yu’s purchase was too obvious. Wen Yun’s peripheral vision caught sight of a very large item. She looked over curiously and saw Ruan Yu holding a long, tabby cat-shaped body pillow. She couldn’t help but let out an “Eh.”
“This is the pillow I bought for you!” Afraid of being misunderstood, Ruan Yu quickly said, “Actually, I ordered it the same day you bought me a pillow, but the seller kept delaying the shipment, so I canceled the order and bought it again. That’s why it only arrived today!”
“For me?” Wen Yun was puzzled. “Why did you suddenly think of buying me a pillow?”
“You said a body pillow can give a person a sense of security,” Ruan Yu said, involuntarily recalling what happened that night in the countryside, her ears growing slightly warm.
Wen Yun suddenly understood and quickly said, “You really didn’t have to, thank you for the thought!”
Then, she remembered the gift she was holding for Ruan Yu. She quickly tore open the remaining packaging, saying as she did, “Here, this is the protective gear I wanted to give you. You can try it out and get used to it over the next few days, see if it fits, or if the material causes any allergies. You can wear it before the 3000-meter race!”
Ruan Yu was stunned, watching as Wen Yun took out knee pads, a back brace, patella straps, leg sleeves, and ankle supports one by one from the box and displayed them. She was completely taken aback.
“Uh… this kind of protective gear mostly comes in dark colors, especially black,” Wen Yun explained, thinking Ruan Yu disliked the color. “I didn’t buy the lighter-colored ones because the patterns were ugly. If you don’t like dark colors, I can show you the online stores, and you can pick one yourself.”
Ruan Yu steadied herself, shaking her head. “No, it’s fine. I really like this gift you’ve given me. But… you seem very worried about me running the 3000 meters?”
“Just think of me as someone who is used to thinking about the worst-case scenario,” Wen Yun sighed. “Luo Qin is back recently, but things have been too calm. I’m afraid she’ll use the sports meet as an opportunity to have someone publicly trip you. You should know this: during intense exercise, if a collision is masked well, the truth can be easily covered up.”
“Mm, I understand your foresight,” Ruan Yu quickly nodded. She thought for a moment, then handed the body pillow over. “Since this is my gift, I’ll take care of the rest of the cleanup here.”
Once Wen Yun left, Ruan Yu organized all the protective gear while sorting through the confusing jumble of thoughts in her mind.
She had a vague feeling that this person, like herself, knew what was going to happen in the future.
Otherwise, it could only be extreme paranoia. Why else would she think of an extreme event like being tripped during the sports meet?
She had been puzzled once before, when that person left the exam early to wait for her at the hall entrance and explained her reason for doing so.
Now, connecting that to the way Wen Yun worked to get her in touch with Grandpa Wen and her aunt, and the fact that Wen Yun was always by her side during every thunderstorm, various details gradually surfaced. A disturbing thought suddenly appeared in Ruan Yu’s mind.
But she didn’t allow that thought to remain for more than a few seconds, brutally casting it aside.
It couldn’t be her.
That person… absolutely couldn’t be Wen Yun!
Yet, she couldn’t explain why that person knew so much about her situation, or why she could always manage to twist the circumstances to her advantage before things even happened.
The only thing she knew for certain now was that this person genuinely wanted to help her and was giving her all in doing so.
But what was the reason for this person’s actions? And what was her origin?
Suddenly, Ruan Yu was sharply reminded of Abbot Huiheng’s words about that person’s one remaining chance to withdraw after becoming entangled in karma.
At the time, she thought it might be something like a separation, such as her leaving the Wen family after graduation while Wen Yun remained, still keeping in touch but no longer having deeper ties.
However, a bizarre and terrifying scenario now occurred to her:
Would that person completely vanish from her life once a certain condition was met?
