- Chapter 84 - Disappointment and the "Self-Taught" Path
As the dizziness from the teleportation array faded, the surrounding landscape underwent a world-shaking transformation.
Before her lay a vast expanse of verdant grassland, with lush forests standing in clusters in the distance. The air, thick with the scent of fresh grass, felt pure and invigorating as it filled her lungs. In the tranquil sky, even the clouds seemed lazy. Reaching out, she could feel faint wisps of spiritual energy lingering around her fingertips.
The Cultivation Realm truly lived up to its name; the spiritual energy here was far denser than in the Mortal Realm.
Zhong Ying stood in a clearing surrounded by a crowd of people. It felt like the exit of a packed train station. Nearby, various cultivators in mismatched robes were shouting: “Those for [Sect Name] look over here, the induction team is this way!” while others stood expressionless, holding signs that read “XX Sect Gathering Point.”
Zhong Ying swept her gaze across the area and finally found the Hehuan Sect’s induction team in a corner. A few young cultivators in red and black robes stood together, having planted a sign in the ground with three large words: Hehuan Sect.
Given the name (“Joyful Union”), it seemed they hadn’t had many new recruits in a long time. However, as far as Zhong Ying knew, the Hehuan Sect held a respectable status within the Demon Realm; they were quite well-known.
With that in mind, Zhong Ying strode over.
“Zhong Lanqing?” one of them asked as she approached. They were only responsible for picking up one person this time—a mortal disciple named Zhong Lanqing.
“Greetings, Senior Brothers and Sisters. I changed my name last night; from now on, I am Zhong Ying,” she said with a polite bow.
“Understood. Follow us, then. We came specifically for you.”
Zhong Ying nodded.
On the road, Zhong Ying asked casually, “Seniors, I wonder if there is anything I should be mindful of regarding the sect entrance tests?”
After a bit of conversation, the disciples were happy to share: “You don’t need to take the entrance tests. Elder Chilian gave special approval. Your talent is exceptional, so you are to become her primary disciple immediately.”
“You’re quite lucky. Elder Chilian’s cultivation has progressed by leaps and bounds recently; she is the undisputed top powerhouse of our sect. Countless disciples wanted to study under her, but she refused them all. Senior Brother Zhou Chen used to be her disciple, but late last year, the Elder said his aptitude was insufficient and dissolved their master-disciple bond.”
“Speaking of that, I’m still baffled,” another added. “Senior Brother Zhou Chen wasn’t the Sect’s Head Disciple, but he was certainly among the elite. I don’t know what Elder Chilian was thinking, cutting ties just like that. It’s made things very difficult for him. He’s been in a foul mood lately, so the Sect Leader sent him out for an experiential journey.”
“Little Junior Sister Zhong, you should be careful in the future. Zhou Chen isn’t exactly the type to seek petty revenge, but he was just kicked out, and now a newcomer mortal like you has been taken in as the Elder’s disciple. He’s bound to be resentful. He might try to make things difficult for you. Since you have such great talent, you’d better focus on your cultivation.”
Zhong Ying nodded. “Thank you for the warning, Seniors.”
Zhou Chen, was it? She noted the name.
“Hehe, we’re telling you this to build some good karma. After all, you’ll be the Elder’s disciple, and we’re just inner sect disciples. We hope you’ll look out for us in the future.”
“I understand,” Zhong Ying replied.
They traveled for dozens of miles, crossing several mountain peaks. The cultivators were beginning to feel the fatigue. They considered stopping for a rest, but when they looked back, they saw no trace of exhaustion on Zhong Ying’s face. She looked as though she had been carried the whole way in a sedan chair.
Hehuan Disciples: ???
Are you the cultivator and we’re the mortals?
Though confused, they didn’t voice their questions. Cultivators had their pride, after all! They gritted their teeth and pushed on, refusing to be outdone by a new junior sister.
In truth, this distance was nothing to Zhong Ying. She still carried the System’s +100% Body Attribute and +50% Mental Attribute buffs. In the world of cultivation, one only sheds their mortal coil after the first major breakthrough—Foundation Establishment. These disciples were only in the Qi Refining stage; in terms of raw physical stamina, they weren’t necessarily a match for her.
Thanks to their relentless pace, they reached the Hehuan Sect’s protective mountain array before nightfall.
The Cultivation Realm was divided: half for Celestials, half for Demons. But because the number of Celestial cultivators far exceeded the Demonic ones, the Demon Realm was vast but sparsely populated. The Hehuan Sect sat in the south, occupying a range of mountains and plains that looked somewhat desolate due to the lack of people.
“Follow me to see Elder Chilian,” the leading disciple gestured.
Am I finally going to see Little Bao? A sense of joy blossomed in Zhong Ying’s heart.
Fifteen minutes later, Zhong Ying arrived at Elder Chilian’s grotto.
“This is the place. Go in yourself.” The disciple left her there and departed.
Once she was alone, a voice echoed from within the cave.
“Come in. Turn left once you enter. I am waiting for you in the small garden.” The voice carried a hint of wine-induced drowsiness. Zhong Ying followed the instructions.
After a short walk, she finally saw the person she had been longing for… Elder Chilian.
A woman sat at a stone table with a wine jar, her cheeks flushed red from drink. This person… could not possibly be her Zhu Xingtong.
But Zhong Ying didn’t lose hope entirely. She approached, trying to confirm her identity via the semi-transparent Favorability bar above the Elder’s head.
【Favorability: 20 (Neutral)】
【Because Favorability is insufficient, the Host cannot receive rewards yet. Please do not be discouraged; the rewards in the Xianxia world are very rich!】
The System’s voice was also tinged with surprise. This was the first time they hadn’t immediately hit a reward-tier level of Favorability!
【Host… it seems Elder Chilian is not the Big Boss Zhu!】
Zhong Ying nodded silently. Had Little Bao not come to this world? Or had she arrived somewhere else, and Zhong Ying just hadn’t found her yet?
Whatever the case, Zhong Ying’s mood soured instantly. A sense of loss spread through her, and she was shrouded in a gloomy aura.
Elder Chilian, sensing the sudden shift in Zhong Ying’s mood the moment they met, frowned. “Do you have some grievance against me?”
“I wouldn’t dare,” Zhong Ying replied. Despite her words, her expression remained cold. The frustration of not finding Little Bao was beginning to boil over.
“Then why the long face? Do you need me to give you a mirror?” Chilian was genuinely confused. “Am I ugly? Or is there something else about me that offends your eyes?”
Zhong Ying simply lowered her gaze. “This disciple wouldn’t dare.”
“I won’t settle accounts with you for now. Your name is Zhong Ying, right? Tell me, why did you choose the Hehuan Sect? Do you truly wish to cultivate the Demonic path?”
“Yes. I do.”
Her tone was utterly perfunctory!
Chilian assumed the girl had changed her mind and wanted to crawl back to Immortal Venerable Beimeng. She grew irritated and slammed the table, her wine jar wobbling and spilling liquid everywhere.
“Regardless of what you think, since you have come to my Hehuan Sect, you have stepped onto the Demonic path. Even if you want to regret it and go back to being an Immortal, it is impossible!”
Zhong Ying realized her attitude was problematic. Even if Chilian wasn’t Little Bao, she still had a mission to complete. Completing this world meant returning to the original world.
“I chose the Demonic path voluntarily. Please instruct me, Elder.”
“Don’t call me Elder! From now on, I am your Master. I don’t expect you to ascend to godhood, but I have one requirement: in five years, at the Great Sect Talent Competition, you must defeat the Head Disciple of the Changtian Sect and seize the championship!”
Chilian stared at her with burning eyes. “You can do it, right? I’ve checked your talent. As long as you aren’t lazy, you will definitely win!”
Zhong Ying hadn’t even begun Qi Refining, yet she was being told to prepare for a championship in five years? She lowered her eyes. “Since Master has such confidence in me, I shall not fail your expectations.”
Chilian nodded, satisfied. “I like the look of you.” She pulled a thick stack of books from her spatial ring and slammed them onto the stone table.
“These are the books I used during my own cultivation,” Chilian said with a smile. “Read them carefully. Once you learn how to refine Qi, keep reading. These books are enough for you to teach yourself all the way to the Nascent Soul stage.”
Though the Divine Phoenix’s fire had destroyed her body, it hadn’t touched Chilian’s soul. During her months of rebirth, she had written down all her insights to prepare for her own return to power and to train a disciple.
Chilian then produced another stack. “And these… these are the mental techniques and moves of Immortal cultivators. I’ve organized them for you. You’ll meet many Immortals during the competition in five years; these are for reference.”
Finally, she patted Zhong Ying’s shoulder. “Though I am your Master, I cannot watch over your cultivation constantly. I am preparing to enter secluded meditation. If you have questions, go find your Sect Leader Uncle.”
Zhong Ying: “…” So, Elder Chilian’s idea of instruction is self-study.
Actually, Zhong Ying preferred it this way. She had the “Martial Arts Genius” cheat and the Natural Dual Physique; her cultivation speed would be thousands of times faster than a normal person’s. Having a teacher hovering over her would only slow her down.
“Thank you for the books, Master,” Zhong Ying said, nodding.
Demon Venerable Chilian felt no guilt whatsoever about abandoning her new disciple on their first meeting. “I will be in seclusion for about a year. I hope that by the time I emerge, you will have reached Foundation Establishment.”
“Yes, Master.”
If anyone else had witnessed this exchange, they would have been speechless. One dared to ask, and the other dared to agree.
Reaching Foundation Establishment in a year? From a mortal start? That wasn’t a mortal—that was a god in the making.
