After the Young Master’s Death, He was Kissed by His Mortal Enemy! - Chapter 78
Wei Hailan was stunned.
He forgot to cough, forgot to blink.
Forgot to put down the cup in his hand, forgot the burning spiciness still lingering in his throat.
He even nearly forgot to breathe.
Wei Hailan’s face visibly turned red, and his gaze started to drift uncontrollably.
He couldn’t tell what exactly he was feeling at that moment—was it complete emotional chaos, or was it… butterflies?
Fu Yun continued to look at him with that calm, aloof expression, as if waiting for his answer.
…Could someone please tell him what he was supposed to say right now?!
Should he nod? But wouldn’t that make him look like some kind of desperate fool?
But if he shook his head… Honestly, he was over the moon—how could he possibly say no?
He couldn’t bear to hurt Fu Yun.
“W-Why did you suddenly ask me that?” Wei Hailan’s voice trembled slightly.
He wasn’t sure what Fu Yun wanted to hear, so he had to ask.
Fu Yun’s lips curled slightly. “No matter what, today we’re technically meeting as potential marriage partners, aren’t we? So, your first impression of me should be pretty important.”
First impression…
Suddenly, Wei Hailan remembered the message Chu Xize sent earlier, and everything clicked. His heart bloomed with joy.
Fu Yun dressed up today—for him.
Wei Hailan immediately nodded like a pecking chick. “Yes, yes! I’m totally satisfied! Of course I am!”
He completely forgot how, just a few minutes ago, he had angrily scolded himself for being shallow, vulgar, and not worth mentioning.
“Then, Fu Yun… about me…” Wei Hailan lifted his eyes shyly. “Are you satisfied with me?”
Fu Yun didn’t say yes or no. Instead, he simply poured him another cup of tea.
“Well, since I came here to meet you… what do you think?”
Like the first thaw of spring snow. Like a crack finally forming in ice that had been frozen for ages.
Wei Hailan’s eyes widened, a sparkle lighting up within them.
He couldn’t hold back the joy bubbling inside him—he started grinning like a fool.
They were both smart people. Of course he understood what Fu Yun meant.
After all, Fu Yun had just said that he dressed up before coming out because he wanted to make a good impression on his prospective partner.
Which meant… he wanted him to like him.
Even though Fu Yun didn’t say it outright, Wei Hailan was almost certain: Fu Yun liked him too.
“Hehehe, that’s great, that’s really great… You’ve probably been waiting here a while, huh? You must be starving! Quick, eat, eat!”
“Alright.”
For all the times Wei Hailan used to hate—even loathe—the word “arranged marriage,” now he liked it that much more.
Beaming, he enthusiastically picked dishes for Fu Yun while mumbling to himself:
“Fu Yun, seriously, you’re way too skinny—your bones poke through! You need to eat more! I know staying cooped up at home killed your appetite, but that won’t happen anymore. You’ve got to eat this, this, and that…”
Soon, Fu Yun’s bowl had become a tiny mountain, and he looked on helplessly at Wei Hailan’s lightning-fast chopsticks.
Fu Yun wanted to say he really couldn’t finish it all—and that he could serve himself just fine.
But seeing Wei Hailan so genuinely excited, he couldn’t bring himself to say a single word.
Everything Wei Hailan did—he accepted it all, just as it was.
The rest of the meal went smoothly and warmly.
The entire time, Wei Hailan propped his cheek on one hand and gazed at Fu Yun without looking away for even a second.
He really couldn’t get enough of the view. Totally satisfied.
But toward the end of the meal, Wei Hailan began to feel a bit uneasy.
To be honest, his plan for the day was simple:
After accompanying his mom for her check-up, he’d rush over to pick up Fu Yun.
Then, in the car, he’d wait for the perfect moment, pull out the ring, and confess.
But now that things had changed—and this wasn’t some impulsive escape but a proper meeting—
The confession that was supposed to happen in the car… probably needed to happen earlier now, right?
Yes. Exactly. After Cheng Yi finally confessed to Shen Ran, Wei Hailan finally got the ring.
But it wasn’t a pair—it was just one.
Wei Hailan never would’ve imagined that, despite being the first one to custom-order the ring—and being the one who talked Cheng Yi into it—
He’d be the last one to actually receive his.
Right now, the ring box sat in his pocket. Even through the fabric, he could feel the sharp edges pressing into him.
He’d once vowed that the next time he saw Fu Yun, he’d show up with flowers in one hand and the ring in the other, drop to one knee, and propose on the spot.
But now, with the ring really in his pocket and Fu Yun sitting right in front of him…
He suddenly didn’t quite dare to go through with it.
Wei Hailan took several deep breaths, opened his mouth, and—stammered. Not a word came out.
Even knowing there was a 99% chance Fu Yun felt the same… it was still so hard to say it out loud!
He was so afraid of being rejected, so afraid that the answer he’d get might be that 1%.
By now, Wei Hailan finally understood why Cheng Yi had been so hesitant to confess to Shen Ran before.
It really was hard to speak the love that filled your heart. The words hovered at the lips, yet never came out.
Maybe his hesitation was too obvious, because Fu Yun actually spoke first:
“Hailan.”
“Hmm? Yes? Yes yes yes, I’m here—what’s up!”
“Is there something you want to say? If there is, just say it. I’ll listen.”
With Fu Yun already opening that door for him, it’d be ridiculous to keep holding back.
Wei Hailan unconsciously clenched his hands, then squeezed his eyes shut and threw caution to the wind—
…but in the end, there was no dramatic outburst of emotion. He timidly reached into his pocket and pulled out the ring box.
Because of his job, Wei Hailan was usually very smooth when dealing with people—especially clients.
Calm, composed, even a bit wise. He inspired confidence, the kind of person you could count on.
But right now, all of that poise had completely vanished.
“F-F-Fu Yun, this might sound ridiculous, and maybe you won’t believe me. But I really… like you!”
As soon as he said those words, his courage grew a little. The rest began to flow more easily:
“Maybe you don’t believe in love at first sight. But that snowy night, when I found you by the roadside, the moment you looked up at me—I really fell for you then and there.”
Maybe it was Fu Yun’s elegant, refined face in that moment that captivated him.
Maybe it was the way he gently cradled the stray kitten.
Maybe it was his unyielding spirit—the refusal to bow to fate, his constant yearning for freedom.
Maybe it happened in an instant. Maybe it’s meant to last forever.
When Wei Hailan opened the ring box, his hands were visibly shaking.
He couldn’t even bring himself to lift his head.
“I-I-I know! Love at first sight probably sounds unreliable, even shallow! Maybe you think I am a shallow person, but this is how I really feel about you! I… I…”
Then, he suddenly remembered one of the “bad things” he’d once done to Fu Yun—and decided to confess that too:
“And also, that first time I went to your place—when you asked me to hypnotize you—I actually tricked you into kissing me. But then I lied and said I made you do squats instead! I’m so sorry, I didn’t consider your feelings!!!”
Having poured everything out in one breath, Wei Hailan started to spiral into doubt.
The more he thought about it, the more hopeless it all seemed.
So, he hung his head low, not even daring to take the ring out of the box.
All things aside—of all things—he had hypnotized Fu Yun into doing that…
“Hailan,” Fu Yun said gently, “actually, that day, your hypnosis didn’t work on me. I knew exactly what you made me do.”
Wei Hailan froze. He jerked his head up—and met Fu Yun’s eyes, twinkling with a subtle smile.
“So, you mean… you mean…?”
“I mean, that kiss happened with my permission. It was something I wanted too.”
