- Chapter 109 - Store Manager
“Old Cheng, why are you looking at me with that kind of eyes?”
Seeing that things weren’t right, Wei Hailan immediately became vigilant. He didn’t forget to pull the bewildered Fu Yun back a step.
“What, you want to back out of the deal? The person who promised you’d treat is Shen Ran; it has nothing to do with me. If you want to settle accounts, you can’t find me—Eek!”
Halfway through his defense, his shoulder was suddenly patted by Cheng Yi. Wei Hailan’s whole body jolted, nearly jumping out of his skin as a reflex.
“Hailan.” Cheng Yi continued to pat Wei Hailan’s shoulder gently, his smile calm and kind. “Didn’t you say you didn’t believe in divination and that sort of thing? Why would you go to a divination shop like that?”
It was fine until he mentioned it.
As soon as it was brought up, Wei Hailan suddenly began to stammer. His face turned an inexplicable shade of crimson, looking quite bashful.
“Well… Oh, Old Cheng, I told you! Back when I fell in love with Fu Yun at first sight, I didn’t have his contact information!”
Hearing Wei Hailan mention the past, the corners of Fu Yun’s mouth couldn’t help but curl up.
“Yes, but what does that have to do with you going for divination?”
“I was just desperate and clutching at straws… It’s so hard to find a needle in a haystack! I thought I’d get a reading to see if Fu Yun was in the East, West, South, or North. If I narrowed down the area, the probability of finding him would be higher…”
This behavior sounded truly a bit silly, but if the person doing it was Wei Hailan, it felt quite well-reasoned and logical.
Cheng Yi suppressed a laugh, nodded as if enlightened, and patted Wei Hailan’s shoulder once more.
“I see. You really worked hard. Hearing you describe the diviner as so handsome just now, I thought you had other motives.”
“Huh? What? What do you mean by other motives? But seriously, that store manager is really handsome; you and Shen Ran will know once you see him… Wait, Old Cheng! What on earth do you mean by other motives!?”
Without directly answering Wei Hailan’s question, Cheng Yi turned and left with composure.
Before turning around, he clearly caught a glimpse out of the corner of his eye.
The gentle smile that was just on Fu Yun’s face had vanished.
Presumably, Wei Hailan was about to start explaining himself in a frantic mess.
Catching up with Shen Ran in a few steps, Cheng Yi muttered to himself, “You want to fleece me? Well, you have to pay a price for that.”
Dear Hailan, get ready to “kneel on the washboard” tonight.
“Huh? What price? Cheng Yi, what are you talking about?”
“Nothing. I said let’s go; I can’t wait to be your driver.”
Shen Ran was full of question marks, looking in bewilderment at Cheng Yi, who had quickened his pace and was clearly in a great mood. “…?”
Shen Ran didn’t know then how much of a chain reaction a casual sentence of his would cause.
Following the location Wei Hailan sent, an hour later, Shen Ran and Cheng Yi found the divination house on a street corner.
On the way, Shen Ran had already shared his guess with Cheng Yi and received his confirmation.
“Since you’ve put it that way, the situation is almost certainly as we think. Regardless, once we enter the shop, we’ll know everything.”
However, when they actually reached the door of the divination house, Shen Ran hesitated again.
Wei Hailan said the feeling of this divination house was exactly the same as his escape room.
Could it be that there were actually many spirits inside, and after pushing open the door, he would see spirits scurrying around in a chaotic dance of demons?
The design of this divination house was very Western. After staring at the stained glass window for a few seconds, Shen Ran finally made up his mind.
Whether it’s a mule or a horse, you have to pull it out for a walk to find out.
Whether there were spirits in the divination house had to be seen with his own eyes.
The metallic door of the shop was heavy and cold. Upon pushing it open, a faint woody fragrance mixed with the scent of tobacco and coffee wafted toward them.
The lighting inside was dim. Shen Ran nervously observed the surroundings, fearing something might be hanging from the ceiling or hidden in some dark corner.
However, after observing for a while, he found nothing unusual.
The bookshelves were neatly filled with books in Chinese and foreign languages, and a crystal ball was placed in an empty space.
An old-fashioned clock ticked rhythmically, making a light clicking sound. The mist produced by the humidifier was rendered somewhat ethereal under the purple ambient lighting.
…This was just a normal, atmospheric divination house.
“Doesn’t seem like anything is abnormal?” Shen Ran whispered into Cheng Yi’s ear. “Let’s go further in; the reception area should be in the back.”
Having come this far, Shen Ran truly began to get curious about the store manager, if he was truly as unparalleled as Wei Hailan described.
The further in they went, the lighter the fragrance became and the stronger the smell of tobacco grew.
Finally, Shen Ran saw a person.
The man was sunk into a large office chair, with an English poetry collection with a gold-stamped cover resting over his upturned face.
Even as they entered, the man remained motionless, seemingly asleep.
“Um…” Shen Ran spoke up a bit nervously, breaking the quiet atmosphere. “He-hello?”
After a moment, the man moved the book from his face, revealing an excessively pale young face.
When they saw this face, both Shen Ran and Cheng Yi had to admit that Wei Hailan’s description hadn’t exaggerated in the slightest.
It was truly a face so handsome it was a bit much, and it was very memorable.
“…Are you customers?”
The man stretched his body and placed the poetry collection on the desk, his voice a bit raspy.
Since they were already here, Shen Ran nodded. “Yes, yes. A friend recommended this divination house. You’re the store manager, right? How should I address you?”
“Shane.”
The man who called himself Shane stared at Shen Ran with his grey eyes for a good while.
It wasn’t until Shen Ran felt a bit uncomfortable under the gaze that Shane slowly withdrew his eyes and jerked his chin toward the sofa opposite him. “Sit down, you two.”
Shen Ran pulled Cheng Yi to sit down, his gaze full of curiosity as he looked at Shane.
Despite being a foreigner, his Chinese was incredibly fluent. Could it be that Shane actually grew up here?
Shane opened a cabinet by his hand, and while taking out a bag, he posed a question.
“What do you want to divine?”
Shen Ran answered casually, “Um, I want to divine how the relationship between me and the person next to me will develop in the future.”
Shane nodded slightly, took some Runes out of the bag, and spread them flat on the table.
Shen Ran had never seen this method of divination before, so he watched intently.
Just then, a faint meow came from under the table.
“Meow!”
Then, a long-haired white cat jumped lightly onto the table, positioning itself right between Shen Ran and Shane.
“Manager, is this your cat? It’s so cute.”
The moment the words left his mouth, Shen Ran realized something was wrong.
Because it was a white cat, and a white cat that was glowing, he had overlooked it at first.
What kind of normal cat glows on its own? This was a spirit animal, just like Tuoba!
Sure enough, Shane’s hand holding the Runes paused, and his sharp gaze instantly shot toward him.
