- Chapter 50 - We Will Love Each Other Forever.
Shen Yunmiao furrowed her brow slightly, picked up her teacup for a sip, then set it down. Her gaze was clear, but her words carried a distinct chill: “The Second Young Miss is two years younger than Anian. How could you possibly know about her background?”
Song Xianyin rested her chin in her hand and looked over, her eyes shimmering like autumn waters. “Originally, I didn’t know either, but someone told me, so naturally, I found out.”
Someone? Who would willingly disclose such a secret from a wealthy family? Shen Yunmiao didn’t want to dwell on it and simply said, “Alright, then, are you willing to tell me, Second Young Miss?”
“Of course, I am,” Song Xianyin blinked. “Miss Shen and I will be considered family in the future, so what couldn’t I share? However, there is one thing I’d like to ask for your help with.”
“Go ahead.”
Song Xianyin sighed. “The rift between my sister and me has grown so severe that it pains me. I want to mend it but don’t know how. Everyone knows my sister follows your every word now.”
She looked over, her expression both innocent and helpless.
Shen Yunmiao lowered her gaze, not quite understanding why Song Xianyin wanted to repair her relationship with Cheng Jianian, but she still said, “If possible, I too hope A’nian can experience familial love.”
If possible…
Song Xianyin curved her lips into a slight smile, pretending not to grasp the deeper meaning in Shen Yunmiao’s words.
It didn’t matter anyway.
She didn’t particularly crave a sister, but the feeling of being abandoned by everyone was ultimately unpleasant.
Especially when that person had screamed at her, heartbroken, saying that someone like her was destined to be alone.
Song Xianyin found it deeply irritating. She believed she and Cheng Jianian had a decent relationship. If a mother-daughter bond with Cheng Su was impossible, why not aim for a normal sisterly relationship instead?
She spoke slowly, “Miss Shen, why don’t you take a look at this?”
She pulled out a photo album.
The album seemed quite old, appearing worn yet clean, as if it had been carefully maintained. It must have been a high-quality edition when purchased, as it still didn’t look outdated.
At Song Xianyin’s prompting, Shen Yunmiao opened the album and was startled to find that the person in the photos bore a resemblance to Cheng Jianian.
It was a solo portrait of a strikingly beautiful young woman with exotic features.
Her gray eyes were gentle as she held a child and smiled at the camera.
Looking more closely at that face Shen Yunmiao abruptly lifted her head to stare at Song Xianyin, who didn’t evade her gaze, instead smiling openly and letting her look.
The tall, elegant nose, fair complexion, smiling lips each feature matched.
Only Song Xianyin’s eyes were black.
But that single point of difference was also evident in Cheng Jianian.
This person…
Shen Yunmiao’s heart roiled with shock, though her expression remained composed. She flipped through the pages one by one. In the subsequent photos, the young woman appeared again, but this time in couple and family portraits.
The couple photo featured a handsome young man with bright black eyes and slightly curly brown hair that gave him a youthful, vibrant aura.
Unsurprisingly, it was another undeniably familiar face.
However, in the family portrait, there was only one girl.
Shen Yunmiao compared the image mentally and deduced it must be a young Song Xianyin. Upon closer inspection, she could still trace similarities to the person sitting across from her now.
Song Xianyin had no intention of hiding it from her and said directly, “That’s me inside.”
“Just as you see, the two people inside are my and my sister’s biological parents. Unfortunately, they’ve both passed away.”
Song Xianyin’s voice was gentle, no different from usual, but Shen Yunmiao furrowed her brows tightly, her gaze carrying a hint of scrutiny as she looked over.
Song Xianyin met her gaze openly and said, “There’s nothing I can’t say. My father and mother had no feelings for each other, but my mother needed an heir to inherit everything from the Song and Cheng families. She promised my father that once they had a child, she would divorce him immediately.”
“But my father was a romantic artist. Of course, he refused to have a child for such an absurd reason. So he threatened to commit suicide to force a divorce and had an affair. My mother agreed but demanded that the child my biological mother was carrying must belong to her.”
A knock sounded at the door.
Song Xianyin spoke softly to the waiter outside the private room, “Could you please bring the food a bit later? We’re in the middle of something right now. Thank you.”
She turned her head and looked at Shen Yunmiao, sighing as she said, “That’s how it happened. My father and his lover, my biological mother agreed because they were willing to give up one child in exchange for love, freedom, and the compensation money.”
“My sister was abandoned. They went overseas to travel everywhere, two kindred spirits living the life they wanted. As for me,” She curled her lips slightly, a hint of mockery in her expression. “The weather is unpredictable. There was a cruise ship accident, and they both died. Perhaps out of fierce parental love, they used their last strength to place me on a wooden plank.”
Shen Yunmiao abruptly stood up.
She stared fixedly at Song Xianyin, her lips trembling, but all she could say was, “They were so unfair.”
Willing to sacrifice their lives for one child,
yet using another child to buy their own happiness.
Shen Yunmiao had no right to judge right or wrong, but her heart ached terribly for Cheng Jianian.
The world had been too cruel to her, even begrudging her the love of her parents.
For a moment, Shen Yunmiao felt as if her heart were being twisted and torn apart, the pain so intense she could hardly breathe. When she came back to her senses, her fingertips were already digging deeply into the wooden table she was leaning on.
She pulled her hand back, lowered her gaze, and said, “I understand. I’ll tell A’Nian.”
Song Xianyin didn’t seem to notice Shen Yunmiao’s expression. She just stood up and asked, puzzled, “Aren’t we eating?”
Outside the window, the sky had turned completely dark, it was dinnertime.
But Shen Yunmiao walked out without looking back.
She fought back the tears welling up in her eyes, her only thought to hurry back as quickly as possible and hold the one she loved, the one who had no one to love or care for her.
She wanted to tell her, “Don’t be afraid. From now on, I’ll love you.”
She no longer cared about propriety, only wanting to return faster, even faster.
She strode out, but at the entrance, she bumped into someone.
Dazed, Shen Yunmiao looked up and said, “I’m sorry!”
The rest of her apology stuck in her throat.
She met a pair of smiling gray eyes. With curly brown hair flowing in the air, Cheng Jianian grinned and asked, “Did you miss me?”
Shen Yunmiao could no longer hold back her emotions. She tightly embraced the person in front of her and choked out, “I missed you so much.”
Cheng Jianian, pleasantly surprised and holding a bunch of gift bags, hugged Shen Yunmiao back in return.
Breathing in the crisp, cold scent of fresh snow from the embrace, she smiled and said, “Why are you suddenly so sweet today, actually willing to say such things?”
Shen Yunmiao had never felt so much like crying before. Leaning against this person’s chest, she whispered, “What if you were always this good from now on?”
Cheng Jianian’s heart melted. “Alright, I’ll always be this good from now on. What a bargain for me.”
“That’s not true. You’re even better to me.” Some words suddenly felt too difficult for Shen Yunmiao to voice. She didn’t know how to say it that she already knew about those things, already knew about the hardships and turbulence of Cheng Jianian’s earlier life.
Cheng Jianian gently stroked her soft hair, then naturally freed one hand to take hers. Instead of heading outside, she led her further inside.
Shen Yunmiao, still dazed, let herself be pulled along.
When they reached a spot just inside the doorway, Cheng Jianian suddenly said, “Wait here for me for a little while.”
Her smile was radiant, as if she knew nothing at all. Before Shen Yunmiao could react, her arms were filled with an assortment of snacks.
Cheng Jianian patted her shoulder and headed back to the private room they had just left.
The door opened quietly. Song Xianyin, who had been eating in the room, paused in surprise before breaking into a smile. “Sis! What brings you here?”
Cheng Jianian’s gaze was icy and devoid of emotion. “I know what you said to Miaomiao.”
She wasn’t a fool some things simply couldn’t be hidden from her. Song Xianyin wasn’t surprised.
She only replied, “Sis, is that all you wanted to say to me?”
Cheng Jianian didn’t look at her but stated, “What you want holds no interest for me. The Cheng family will be yours from now on.”
“All I care about is whether Miaomiao is happy or upset. So, don’t burden her with all those unnecessary, messy details. Besides, I’ve already spoken to Cheng Su.”
This time, Song Xianyin was genuinely taken aback. She hadn’t expected Cheng Jianian to act so swiftly, even informing Cheng Su already.
Resting her chin in her hand, she looked up at Cheng Jianian and asked curiously, “Then, Sis, what are you planning to do from now on?”
“I’ll establish my own path, but the Cheng family has nothing to do with me anymore.”
Cheng Jianian recalled the disbelief and anger in Cheng Su’s eyes that afternoon, and a sense of liberation, unlike anything she had ever felt, washed over her:
“She never treated me as a daughter should be treated, so I only need to regard her as a mentor who supported me, not as a mother. Everything I owed her, I repaid over the past seven years. I even gave my life back to her completely. There’s nothing left between us. Don’t bother me with Cheng family matters anymore.”
Song Xianyin admired her decisiveness but said, “Then I wish you happiness, my sister.”
“Thank you, I will be.”
The door closed again, and Cheng Jianian walked away without looking back.
At the entrance of the restaurant stood a young woman with a face as gentle as rippling water. Gone was her usual aloofness; instead, she watched intently as Cheng Jianian walked toward her, step by step.
In her arms, she held a pile of delicious treats.
They were still steaming hot, the warmth flushing her cheeks.
Cheng Jianian’s heart softened. She walked over, took her hand, and accepted the bundle of snacks, asking with a grin, “Are they tasty?”
Shen Yunmiao was caught off guard by the question, how could she have been in the mood to eat just moments ago?
Not wanting to admit she hadn’t touched any of it, she stammered, “Mm…”
If she hadn’t made that sound, it might have been fine, but the moment she did, Cheng Jianian burst into laughter. Outside, the wind rustled bleakly, tousling the stray strands of hair on her forehead.
It felt like returning to those youthful days, under the brilliant moonlight, she took Shen Yunmiao’s damp hand. Yet back then, even her good deeds felt somewhat unjustified, her eyes lowered and her heart veiled in subtle emotions.
The lingering cool fragrance on her lips hinted at what had just transpired between them.
A young girl’s secret feelings blossomed beneath the moonlight.
Now, after nearly a decade of stumbling and uncertainty, those youthful longings had finally come true.
She gazed at Shen Yunmiao, her voice soft and low:
“I love you.”
Shen Yunmiao froze for a moment, then nodded firmly, a smile spreading across her face as the shimmer in her dark eyes rippled outward:
“I love you too.”
Such beautiful words, she could listen to for a lifetime.
Their intertwined hands tightened even more.
Just like two fervent hearts, beating for one another.
