- Chapter 47 - I Promise You
Shen Yunmiao’s heart nearly stopped when she saw Cheng Jianian’s silhouette on the rooftop. The shout she let out had drained every last bit of her strength.
By the time Cheng Jianian turned around in surprise to look at her, all she could see was Shen Yunmiao leaning on her knees, gasping for breath.
Her already pale face was now completely devoid of color, and her dark hair fluttered in the wind, making her appear desolate and forlorn.
Cheng Jianian’s anxiety surged instantly. Forgetting all thoughts of life and death, she instinctively rushed over, grabbed Shen Yunmiao’s wrist, and pulled her into an embrace.
“Don’t be afraid, don’t be afraid, Miaomiao. I’m here.”
In her arms, Shen Yunmiao listened to the frantic beating of Cheng Jianian’s heart, and the dizziness in her head finally eased slightly but only slightly.
The mere thought of the scene she had just witnessed made her feel as though her own heartbeat was hanging by a thread. It wasn’t just her heartbeat; her breathing was also strained, her lungs starved for oxygen, and no matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t seem to get enough air.
Shen Yunmiao knew it was due to extreme psychological tension. She had always suffered from this condition whenever she grew anxious, her entire body would feel unwell.
That was why, back when Jiang Ying had gotten into trouble, her reaction had been so intense, and why Cheng Jianian’s timely assistance had felt so precious.
Yet, over all these years, she had never experienced such overwhelming emotions again. Even when she had learned about that incident back then, she had only felt sorrow nothing as intense as this mix of tension and fury.
She gazed into Cheng Jianian’s eyes. Under the clear moonlight, those gray irises appeared exceptionally gentle, brimming with profound worry and affection.
But it was precisely these eyes that made her love and resent Cheng Jianian in equal measure, unable to let go.
Exhausted in both mind and spirit, Shen Yunmiao raised her hand and gently touched Cheng Jianian’s cheek.
Unbeknownst to her, this gesture triggered a shadow of fear in Cheng Jianian.
Every time Shen Yunmiao lifted her hand, Cheng Jianian would recall the virtual pod, how fragile Shen Yunmiao had been in her arms, weakly raising her hand to press against Cheng Jianian’s chest.
Making her heart beat for her.
But now, Cheng Jianian had broken her promise.
And she had been caught red-handed, leaving her feeling somewhat guilty.
However, worry quickly overshadowed that unspoken guilt. A glimmer of tears welled up in her eyes. “Are you okay, Miaomiao? You scared me to death.”
Shen Yunmiao looked at her calmly, her tone cool. “I should be the one saying that.”
Knowing she was in the wrong, Cheng Jianian had nothing to say in her defense. She forced a faint smile. “I just felt like I’ve been hurting you all along.”
“So you decided to die?” Shen Yunmiao interrupted, her expression one of disbelief.
Despite her usual composure, calmness, and gentle demeanor, she was now on the verge of losing control.
She asked, perplexed, “Do you think I would be happy if you died?”
Cheng Jianian remained silent, simply holding her upright.
Shen Yunmiao was nearly driven mad by her reticence. She wanted to shake her awake, to rid her mind of whatever nonsense was clouding it and make her think rationally.
But she also knew that Cheng Jianian must have been trapped in extreme self-doubt to consider ending her life.
It was likely due to repeated failures in familial and romantic relationships, coupled with a lack of friendship, that left her with no sense of security. And because of Shen Yunmiao’s own attitude, Cheng Jianian had acted so irrationally.
Shen Yunmiao tried to reason with her. “Cheng Jianian, do you think what you’re doing is noble or admirable? Do you believe that after you die, I will remember you forever and live happily ever after?”
She curled her lips with a chilling indifference: “If that’s what you think, then there really is nothing left for us to say. You already know, don’t you? When I saved you, I risked my own life.”
“Cheng Jianian, if you still remember what I said, and what you yourself said, you would never have done something so foolish.”
Cheng Jianian’s eyes reddened, her heart aching with a bitter unease, yet she had no idea what to do.
She knew, deep down, she was running away escaping from all the sorrow and misery.
She also knew she shouldn’t be like this, but what could she do? How could she ever find peace?
It’s impossible for anyone to remain indifferent to losing something they once possessed.
She couldn’t accept it couldn’t accept a life spent drifting away from the person standing before her.
But she also couldn’t bring herself to knowingly inflict endless pain upon her, to persist in such willful, unforgivable behavior.
So be it.
Yet she hesitated, for from the very beginning, she had been waiting, waiting for this person to descend from the heavens just as she had now, clinging to even the slimmest chance, one in ten thousand.
Hoping that she and this person still had a thread of possibility left.
To gaze into those dark eyes and say, “Miaomiao, you’re so beautiful.”
To gently kiss her soft lips under the clear, bright moonlight.
Shen Yunmiao watched her silent, red-rimmed eyes and finally softened. She refrained from saying anything more provocative, sighed, and raised her hand to grasp Cheng Jianian’s shoulder. “Look at me,” she said.
Her gaze was tender yet resolute, filled with a determination she had never shown before.
“Listen to me, A’nian.”
The familiar address made Cheng Jianian lift her head uncontrollably, her eyes bloodshot and clouded with disbelief.
Shen Yunmiao cleared her throat softly. “I know this might sound strange to you, or you might think I’m lying, but please believe me.”
Her gaze lowered as she guided Cheng Jianian’s slender hand to rest gently over her own heart, letting her feel the fierce, pounding rhythm.
“Please believe me, this heart beats for you, too. I haven’t forgotten those things. I just don’t want us to be together in such a strained, helpless way.”
Shen Yunmiao was a reserved person by nature, and saying these words felt almost unbearable, but she couldn’t stop afraid that if she did, Cheng Jianian might do something even more devastating.
Taking a deep breath, she continued, “I know you’ve been dwelling on the past, thinking it was all your fault. But I’ve never believed you were inherently a bad person, nor that your pride would lead you to such actions. Helplessness is something everyone experiences.”
“I can’t speak for my sister and say ‘it’s okay’ about what happened, but I promise you we can face it together. We can make it up to her, no matter what. I won’t let this come between us.”
Shen Yunmiao’s voice was soft, but the tips of her ears flushed bright red.
“I know this might sound awkward, but I really like you, Cheng Jianian. I love you.”
“I know it might be presumptuous to think that someone could find the will to live simply because of their feelings for another person, but I still want to ask you now, do you still want to jump?”
Her gaze was sincere, clear and steady, imbued with a slowly flowing emotion.
“Please believe me, this reunion isn’t just something you’ve been looking forward to alone.”
“I’m so glad we can meet again, A’nian.”
In the next moment, Shen Yunmiao was pulled tightly into Cheng Jianian’s embrace.
She couldn’t suppress her sobs as she choked out, “Miaomiao, Miaomiao, thank you, thank you. This is the third time, the third time you’ve saved me. My heart beats for you.”
Listening to her cries, Shen Yunmiao thought of their experiences over the past ten years and suddenly couldn’t control her laughter.
It was a fragmented, sorrowful laugh, carrying emotions that couldn’t be expressed.
“Cheng Jianian, Cheng Jianian.” She no longer used the intimate nickname, switching instead to the full name, as if afraid she might forget this person, needing to carve the name repeatedly into her heart.
Or perhaps she wanted this person to hear clearly to hear each declaration of her love.
Coming into this world had already been so difficult for them.
Meeting each other wasn’t redemption but being pulled deeper into the other’s pain. No one was happy, so they couldn’t convey happiness.
They could only pass on helpless sorrow.
Even with all her strength, Shen Yunmiao could only piece together a beautiful enough world for Cheng Jianian.
In that world, she was the center of attention and possessed everything.
In that world, she was free, doing what she wanted without hesitation or retreat.
Not like now.
Shen Yunmiao’s voice was hoarse as she said, “I’ve always wanted to tell you I love you, but whenever I get close to you, all I see is endless desolation. What should I do? I can no longer plant flowers in your world.”
Cheng Jianian’s voice trembled, “Just having you here is enough. Having you here is the best. When you’re with me, I feel like my life is in spring.”
Shen Yunmiao couldn’t help but laugh, “Then hold onto spring. Don’t die in this desolate summer. Promise me, okay?”
Cheng Jianian held her tightly, as if trying to merge her into her own body. She didn’t dare let go for even a moment, resting her head gently on Shen Yunmiao’s shoulder.
She whispered in reply, “Okay! I promise you, I promise you. I never really wanted to die anyway. I thought about so many things, I was just afraid to die. I was scared I’d never see you again.”
“I kept thinking, fantasizing that you would come find me, that you would save me. But I didn’t dare. I didn’t dare let you know. I was afraid that if you knew, you wouldn’t come, and then I’d really.”
Shen Yunmiao sighed, “Don’t say anymore.”
“I’m here now. You can do whatever you want.”
She hesitated before adding, “But if you don’t let go soon, I’m afraid I’ll suffocate. Then I probably won’t be able to accompany you in anything.”
Cheng Jianian hurriedly released her, her eyes glistening with tears as she looked at Shen Yunmiao with a pitiful expression. “Miaomiao! I don’t want anything else. I just want to be in a relationship with you.”
A relationship that would never end, one where no one would inexplicably stand in their way.
She just wanted to be with this person openly and honestly.
Shen Yunmiao was right they could face everything together, but the prerequisite was that they had to be together.
Seeing Cheng Jianian’s pitiful yet hopeful expression, Shen Yunmiao couldn’t help but curve her lips, finally shedding her untouchable ice queen demeanor.
She nodded reservedly:
“I can agree to that.”
“But!” she added, to prevent Cheng Jianian from getting too carried away, “You must promise me not to be so reckless about life and death anymore. You have to live well.”
Cheng Jianian nodded emphatically.
