- Chapter 41 - I Came for You
In the end, nothing came of it. Shen Yunmiao, the “victim,” had taken the initiative to say it was fine, and besides, upon checking the property records, the house indeed belonged to Shen Yunmiao.
Ji Hanfeng, suppressing his frustration, seized an opportunity to ask Shen Yunmiao in confusion, “Yunmiao, what are you doing? Clearly.”
But Shen Yunmiao wore a serious expression. “Ji Hanfeng, I’m sorry, but I must tell you very solemnly, I love Cheng Jianian and Cheng Jianian loves me. So, no matter what she does, I will tolerate it. Besides, she hasn’t done anything bad to me.”
Ji Hanfeng looked at her in disbelief.
She sighed, her tone softening slightly. “Please don’t help me anymore. I know these words are hurtful, but Hanfeng, even if she did something to hurt me, it wouldn’t matter. I would accept it willingly.”
Ji Hanfeng replied, “Do as you please.” His eyes reddened slightly as he recalled events from their middle school days, thinking to himself, Haven’t there been enough terrible incidents already?
But in the end, he said nothing.
Dejectedly, he followed the police and left in their car.
The smart door closed once more, and all the commotion settled.
The world returned to quiet, with the faint drizzle brushing against their faces like soft down, yet also sharp as a blade.
Suddenly, the rain stopped.
Shen Yunmiao looked up in confusion to find an umbrella now sheltering her. Through the transparent canopy, she could see the raindrops kept at bay.
Cheng Jianian, slightly taller than her, looked down with gray eyes filled with a sorrow Shen Yunmiao had never seen before.
Her voice trembled as she spoke, “Miaomiao, why are you like this? Why?”
Why did she turn a blind eye to all the wrongs Cheng Jianian had committed, fully embrace her selfish and malicious nature, and show understanding toward her indifferenceas if nothing Cheng Jianian did mattered at all.
Choking back tears, Cheng Jianian lowered her head and buried her face in Shen Yunmiao’s embrace.
“Don’t you know, don’t you know.”
Soon, a pair of slender arms wrapped around her firmly, holding her close in a deep embrace. The voice remained gentle as it said, “I know. I love you.”
Cheng Jianian slowly closed her eyes.
Inhaling deeply the crisp scent of fresh snow.
Was it her fault to lose herself in this?
Who could say what was right or wrong? Even drunk, she never lost her rationality, but today, that thread had snapped.
A person starved of love for so long couldn’t suddenly receive an overwhelming amount of it. Her heart, always cold and indifferent to others, now ached dully.
Unconsciously, she had begun to let this person’s every smile and frown affect her emotions, silently memorizing every word she spoke, feeling her heartbeat quicken for her, softening at her tears, and even losing her own rationality because of her.
Young Miss Cheng had always been proud and aloof, never taking others’ affairs or words to heart.
An extreme egoist, born with the superiority of one in power.
All of it shattered in this moment.
Bowing for love wasn’t just a saying; she was willing to lower her head ten thousand times for this person, as long as she was happy, healthy, and at peace.
Cheng Jianian held Shen Yunmiao tightly, her voice trembling as she said, “I need to step out for a bit, Miaomiao. We…”
Shen Yunmiao, understanding as always, replied, “Go ahead. As long as you’re not coming back to break up with me, it’s fine.”
Cheng Jianian’s intense emotions overflowed. “How could I ever break up with you? I only hope you won’t break up with me.”
Shen Yunmiao gently touched her cheek. “Alright, you should go now.”
Cheng Jianian meticulously explained how to use the remote control, car keys, and various other items before reluctantly heading down the mountain first, still feeling somewhat uneasy.
Shen Yunmiao, however, paid little attention to these things.
It was just that the words Ji Hanfeng had spoken further shattered her already fragile mental state.
She sensed that look of disappointment, the kind she had seen many, many times before.
But whose eyes were they?
She couldn’t recall. Hazily, through the mist, she caught a glimpse of a pair of deep blue eyes, filled with concern and helplessness.
Staggering, she lay down on the bed, intending to rest for a while.
Yet the feeling of mental fragmentation was inescapable.
Drifting into a heavy, muddled sleep, she felt as though she were lost in a fog.
From afar, she heard a voice calling out: “Miaomiao, my dear Miaomiao. Sister begs you, please wake up soon.”
Shen Yunmiao broke out in a cold sweat, terrified, but no matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t wake up. Her consciousness felt as if it were being torn from her body, the pain unbearable.
Clenching her teeth, she asked, “Who are you?”
But the voice gradually faded away. As the mist cleared, she saw a car, an expensive one. Under normal circumstances, Shen Yunmiao wouldn’t have been able to recognize its value.
But now, she recognized it instantly, because this car was identical to the one Cheng Jianian had driven away.
For a moment, she was stunned, unsure of what was happening to her. How could a dream feel so real, yet so bewildering?
She couldn’t distinguish whether what she was seeing was real or illusory.
She could feel that everything here was beyond her control.
Suddenly, a car sped toward her.
It was a car she had seen many times before the one from the summer night when she lost her cat, and the one from reality when she lost the one she deeply loved.
Instinctively, she wanted to rush over and protect the car that was about to be hit, the car carrying her beloved.
But she had no control. It was agonizing. Drenched in sticky cold sweat, the pain was overwhelming.
Cheng Jianian went down the mountain because of Cheng Su.
That morning, Cheng Su had sent another message, essentially saying that the chamber of commerce election was about to begin and asking why she hadn’t shown up yet.
Cheng Jianian didn’t reply.
Cheng Su’s next message read:
[“Jianian, my daughter, if you’re unwilling to help me fulfill my long-held wish, how can I let you achieve yours?”]
The warning was unmistakable. Cheng Jianian felt a headache coming on and had no choice but to arrange a meeting with Cheng Su, hoping to settle things once and for all.
The security team was stationed at the foot of the mountain, completely sealing it off to prevent anyone from entering.
After passing through the checkpoint, she glanced at the people guarding the mountain.
She felt slightly reassured.
What should she do? She was still afraid that Miaomiao might suddenly disappear. She knew it wouldn’t happen, and she knew this mindset was unhealthy.
Cheng Jianian could only repeat to herself that once she dealt with these matters, everything would be fine.
She and Miaomiao could go back to the way they were.
The car gradually made its way into the city. Perhaps because it was a weekday and raining, the roads were unusually empty, with not a single car in sight even after driving for a while.
The gray road was marked with stark white crosswalks, stretching endlessly into the distance. Cheng Jianian frowned slightly, feeling that the day was unnervingly quiet.
Even the intersections were this silent.
Was something happening today?
As the red light turned green, a sense of foreboding washed over her.
Cheng Jianian released the handbrake and stepped on the accelerator.
Somehow, the scene felt vaguely familiar.
Instinctively, she glanced to the side and saw a car speeding toward her, the wind whistling as it tore through the air.
It was a black car, but everything else about it was a blur due to its excessive speed.
Cheng Jianian frantically yanked the steering wheel to the right, but it was useless. The other car seemed intent on mutual destruction, moving too fast to avoid.
The icy chill of death crept up from her fingertips. Will I never see you again? If I’d known it would end like this. Cheng Jianian smiled weakly.
If I’d known, I would have kissed you before leaving.
At the critical moment, a hand covered hers. A strange sensation burst from her pores, and Cheng Jianian turned her head in disbelief, only to meet the pair of dark eyes she had longed for day and night.
But the emotions in those eyes were unfamiliar urgent, panicked, yet resolute.
The moment the two cars collided, Cheng Jianian’s car was predictably sent flying, tumbling over a dozen meters away.
Yet she could clearly feel the person shielding her tightly in their embrace. She tried to move but found herself completely immobilized.
It was as if the world had frozen her in place, forcing her to watch helplessly as tragedy unfolded. Tears fell in heavy drops, burning with a pain that seared her heart.
When she finally regained control, she struggled to pry open the car door and pulled Shen Yunmiao, drenched in blood, into her arms.
Tears streamed uncontrollably down her face, but no words would come. Finally, with a throat-shredding effort, she cried out a heart-wrenching, “Miaomiao!”
The person in her arms still wore a white shirt, now completely soaked in blood. Even those once dark, gentle eyes were now tinged with red and tightly shut.
Cheng Jianian trembled as she reached out to touch those eyes. The long lashes fluttered slightly, and Shen Yunmiao slowly awoke.
Gasping for air, Cheng Jianian still felt as though she were suffocating. She asked, “Miaomiao, Miaomiao, why are you here?”
Before she could say more, a weakly raised finger pressed against her lips.
Shen Yunmiao gazed at her tenderly, her pale face now ghostly white and streaked with blood.
She smiled and spoke, her voice as gentle, forgiving, and free of resentment as it had been that morning:
“Little C, you must remember, I am Shen Yunmiao, and you are Cheng Jianian. Do you understand?”
Cheng Jianian didn’t understand why she was saying these things and reached for her phone to call an ambulance.
But Shen Yunmiao gently stopped her.
With a soft “ugh,” Shen Yunmiao spat out a mouthful of blood. “Listen to me, listen.” she urged.
Tears welling in her eyes, Cheng Jianian nodded.
Shen Yunmiao’s voice was faint: “You love me. You belong to me, right?”
Cheng Jianian nodded vigorously.
Shen Yunmiao smiled again and slowly raised her hand, placing it over Cheng Jianian’s left chest:
“Then let this heart beat for me. Promise me, okay?”
All Cheng Jianian could do was nod. She wanted to speak but feared that if she interrupted, she might never hear Shen Yunmiao’s voice again.
Shen Yunmiao weakly grasped Cheng Jianian’s hand and guided it to her own left chest:
“Don’t worry. I promise you, I belong to you too. This heart will always beat for you.”
“Little C, I love you. I look forward to our reunion.”
Finally able to speak, Cheng Jianian clutched the chilling warmth in her arms and pleaded:
“Please, Miaomiao, I beg you stop talking.”
Shen Yunmiao’s eyes had already lost their spark, yet she managed to shake her head weakly: “Don’t be afraid, don’t be afraid. I can answer your question now.”
“Cheng Jianian, I came for you.”
Why are you here?
I came for you.
The world fell into complete silence. The person in her arms gradually dissolved into fragments, fading away.
Along with her, the entire world began to vanish.
