- Chapter 39.1 - I Cannot Accept Losing You
When Cheng Jianian pushed the door open and looked up, she met the sparkling eyes of the young girl eyes tinged with a hint of ingratiation.
Her heart sank, but she managed a faint smile. “What is it, Miaomiao?”
Just as Shen Yunmiao was about to bring up the weekend plans, Cheng Jianian’s phone rang.
Casting an apologetic glance, Cheng Jianian turned to leave, but Shen Yunmiao quickly waved her off. “It’s fine, it’s fine. Go ahead, A’nian.”
Cheng Jianian stepped out to take the call.
The conversation was brief, revolving around work and updates from the private investigator.
“Weary, Cheng Jianian said, “Keep a close watch. Don’t let Li Shengran run around causing trouble anymore.”
The person on the other end assured her repeatedly.
She made another call afterward company matters had piled up all at once. In the blink of an eye, Cheng Su had become her adversary.
After arranging for a meal to be delivered on time, Cheng Jianian reentered the room and apologized, “Sorry, Miaomiao. Something came up at the company.”
Shen Yunmiao, ever understanding, quickly replied, “It’s alright, it’s alright. You go ahead.”
Meeting those gentle dark eyes, free of any resentment, Cheng Jianian could no longer suppress her anguish. She stepped forward and buried her head in the crisp white hospital bedsheets.
The sheets were fresh and clean, carrying a faint, crisp scent of new snow.
In that moment, Cheng Jianian wished her life could freeze right there to drown in this overwhelming fragrance of snow.
But she couldn’t. She had to keep living not just for herself, but for Miaomiao as well.
Life was truly too painful.
How many more minutes of freedom truly belonged to them?
As if sensing her uncontrollable sorrow, Shen Yunmiao furrowed her delicate brows and reached out, silently stroking her soft hair.
“Don’t be afraid. I’m still here. I’ll always be by your side,” she said, her voice gentle.
Cheng Jianian lifted her head, meeting that tender gaze, and forced a smile. “Okay, I know.”
“I know you’ve always been by my side.”
She stood up and left reluctantly, leaving Shen Yunmiao with only the sight of her retreating figure.
Shen Yunmiao couldn’t quite describe the feeling in her heart, a sense of foreboding washed over her.
But she couldn’t put it into words. All she could do was silently smooth out the disheveled sheets, feeling the lingering warmth Cheng Jianian had left behind.
Several days passed without them seeing each other. Cheng Jianian seemed incredibly busy, so much so that she neglected her own injuries and hardly stayed at the hospital.
Shen Yunmiao wanted to remind her to rest but couldn’t reach her in person, so she sent a message through her phone, urging her not to overwork herself.
A long time later, Cheng Jianian finally replied:
【I’ll rest properly. You should too, Miaomiao. When I get back, I’ll check on you to see if you’ve lost any weight.】
Reading the message, Shen Yunmiao couldn’t help but smile and sent back a sticker: 【Sassy cat with hands on hips.jpg】
Sometimes, she truly felt that her girlfriend was like a little kitten, always saying one thing but meaning another, fragile and in need of being held carefully in someone’s arms.
But she wasn’t capable enough to ensure her girlfriend could rest properly every day.
Shen Yunmiao suddenly felt a pang of sorrow. In the past, raising a kitten only required her to act in a few dramas to afford it. But now, even working nonstop on film sets wasn’t enough to support the luxurious lifestyle of the esteemed young CEO, Cheng Jianian.
It wasn’t until the day she was discharged from the hospital that Shen Yunmiao saw Cheng Jianian again.
It was clear she hadn’t been resting well these past few days fatigue was visible on her face.
Shen Yunmiao’s heart ached at the sight, but she didn’t know what to say.
Cheng Jianian opened her arms and smiled, saying, “Come, I’ll take you home.”
Shen Yunmiao curved her lips into a smile and tightly wrapped her arms around that slender waist. “Alright, let’s go home.”
After returning home, it seemed as though everything had settled. Cheng Jianian was finally able to stay at home instead of going to the office.
Yet, never stepping out felt somewhat strange. Shen Yunmiao didn’t dare ask why Cheng Jianian was always at home, nor did she dare question the sudden increase in surveillance cameras around the house.
Tomorrow was the weekend. Hesitantly, she wondered how to ask Cheng Jianian if she could go out.
It felt as though no one could leave this house anymore.
Everywhere was eerily quiet.
That subtle, oppressive atmosphere made Shen Yunmiao’s heart race.
She couldn’t shake the feeling that something had changed between them.
The distance between them seemed to have widened, and suddenly, she no longer understood what her lover was thinking.
The once-passionate affection, the fireworks lighting up the sky, the bright moon and shining stars all seemed to be fading away rapidly.
Shen Yunmiao wanted to draw closer to her lover but found herself unable to.
The next morning, she prepared breakfast.
After finishing her morning routine, Cheng Jianian smiled and asked, “Why did you suddenly decide to make breakfast?”
Lately, their meals had all been delivered. Zuo Ying always brought three meals a day on time.
They could even pre-order their meals, yet no one ever stepped out.
Shen Yunmiao blinked. “I wanted you to taste my cooking. Is that not okay?”
Cheng Jianian smiled. “Of course it is.”
But even as they ate, the atmosphere remained unchanged. Tentatively, Shen Yunmiao asked, “A’Nian, what do you think about me attending that press conference tonight?”
Cheng Jianian elegantly savored the fried egg in front of her, her gaze tender yet unsettling as she looked over. “Miaomiao, right now, I don’t think it’s suitable for us to go out.”
Shen Yunmiao shuddered under the gaze of those gray eyes, which held emotions she couldn’t decipher. For a moment, she felt as though she had fallen into an icy abyss not for herself, but for Cheng Jianian. “A’Nian but didn’t we agree last time? We!”
Cheng Jianian’s eyes curved into a smile, her expression seemingly cheerful, but her words sent chills down Shen Yunmiao’s spine. “Miaomiao, I never agreed to that. Why do you want to leave me?”
She set down her utensils and tightly grasped Shen Yunmiao’s hand, her slender fingers nearly covering Shen Yunmiao’s wrist. “You’re all I have. I’d do anything for you. I’m begging you, Miaomiao, please don’t leave me. I love you. I’d carve out my own heart and give it to you, Miaomiao.”
Her sudden outburst left Shen Yunmiao at a loss. With her other hand, she clasped Cheng Jianian’s icy cold hand, holding it tightly between both of hers. “A’Nian, A’Nian, listen to me. Let’s take a deep breath. Don’t be nervous. I won’t leave you.”
Cheng Jianian couldn’t control her violent and frenzied thoughts. She moved closer to Shen Yunmiao, her voice trembling slightly, “Miaomiao, Miaomiao, I really can’t lose you. I’m begging you, I’m begging you.”
Large teardrops fell one by one from her gray eyes, tracing a path down her cheeks. Shen Yunmiao could feel that the hand holding hers was no longer warm as it used to be, but chillingly cold.
Cheng Jianian had been living under high pressure these past few days, and her already unstable emotions were now on the verge of collapse.
She didn’t know how to keep this person by her side, yet she couldn’t bear to lose her either.
The only solution she could think of was to hide her away to a place where no one else could find them, a place where only the two of them existed.
Her profound love had twisted into an intense possessiveness. She was terrified and confused, unable to comprehend why her beloved would want to leave her.
The beautiful memories they once shared had now become invisible chains in her hands, binding the person who loved her deeply.
She held Shen Yunmiao tightly, “Miaomiao, Miaomiao, if you love me, please don’t leave me, okay?”
“I can’t lose you, not even for a second. I love you, Miaomiao. You love me too, don’t you?”
A wave of overwhelming heartache surged in Shen Yunmiao’s chest. She hugged her lover back firmly, “Yes, I love you. I won’t leave you.”
“But, Anian, I can’t just break my promise without any explanation. That’s not right. Listen to me, you’re too worked up right now. Let’s both take a deep breath and calm down.”
Cheng Jianian, however, couldn’t follow her suggestion. She clung to Shen Yunmiao in agony, pouring out her turbulent emotions, feeling as if something vital had been drained from her. The pain was unbearable, leaving her unable to move.
Shen Yunmiao gently patted her back, soothing her softly, “Don’t be afraid, Anian. I’m here, we’re both here.”
The two of them didn’t bring up the topic again. By the afternoon, Ji Hanfeng, unable to bear the wait any longer, sent a message: 【Yunmiao, when do you think you’ll be able to come? Do you need me to prepare clothes for you? As for the script, you don’t need to worry, I’ve taken care of everything, including the parts where you might need to speak.】
Shen Yunmiao looked at his message with a sigh, hesitating before replying: 【Hanfeng, something has come up on my end. I wanted to ask if it would be okay if I don’t come?】
Ji Hanfeng replied almost instantly: 【What happened? Are you okay? Is there anything I can do to help?】
As he spoke, he called. Unsure whether Cheng Jianian would check her call records, Shen Yunmiao hesitated but answered.
