- Chapter 36 - Jiang Mingyue is Trapped
7:00 AM
Lu Lingzhi woke from her dreams and stretched. As her arms moved, she once again felt the soft warmth in her embrace.
She looked down and froze instantly.
Jiang Mingyue was still in her arms, and her own arm was, predictably, pressing down on Mingyue’s.
Lu Lingzhi: “…”
Did she have some sort of subconscious obsession with Jiang Mingyue? How could a person make the exact same mistake, at the exact same time, in the exact same place, with the exact same posture? Was this cycle of events just picking on her sleeping habits?
As she was dazing out, perhaps awakened by her movement, Jiang Mingyue slowly opened her eyes. Her long eyelashes fluttered, her gaze misty with the grogginess of early waking as she looked at the stiff Lu Lingzhi. “What’s wrong?”
She clearly felt their overly intimate posture as well.
To hide her embarrassment, Lu Lingzhi blurted out, “Nothing! Just thinking about what to wear.”
Jiang Mingyue propped herself up and rubbed her numb arm, her gaze sweeping over Lu Lingzhi. After becoming an Alpha, Lingzhi’s silhouette seemed a bit sharper.
Jiang Mingyue nodded understandingly without exposing her. She stood up, walked to the wardrobe, thought for a moment, and pulled out a white cotton T-shirt and a pair of slim-fit black jeans, handing them over.
“Here.” Her voice had returned to its usual clear, gentle tone.
“I don’t want black and white. It’s not fashionable at all, it’s old-fashioned,” Lu Lingzhi nitpicked. “I want a pretty dress.”
“Now that you’re an Alpha, some of the dresses you wore as an Omega… might not be suitable anymore.” Her tone was natural, but her eyes held a trace of imperceptible possessiveness and protectiveness.
Best to avoid those overly cute styles that might attract Alphas with impure intentions. Even without Alphas, attracting a crowd of Omegas wouldn’t be hard for her.
If President Xie found out… Jiang Mingyue could already visualize the scene. President Xie, furious, grabbing a feather duster to discipline “Lu the Second,” while she and Chang Xi tried to mediate. Lu the Second would provoke President Xie for meddling, and President Xie would call her a little brat. The two would chase each other around the sofa or dining table.
Lu the Second would call for help: “Mingyue, save me! Little Mommy, save me! The big villain is committing domestic violence!”
Chang Xi would mediate with indulgent words: “The child is still young, don’t hit her too hard.”
President Xie would retort: “Young? She’s an adult! If I don’t discipline her now, society will. I might as well do it myself.”
The whole family would be running amok in the living room.
It really felt like a family. Jiang Mingyue gave herself a self-righteous excuse. I’m just trying to maintain family peace.
“This is all there is. Wear it or don’t.”
Lu Lingzhi sat on the edge of the bed with her arms crossed. Seeing that Jiang Mingyue really wasn’t going to coax her, she huffed and reluctantly put the clothes on.
After they both finished washing up, Jiang Mingyue went into the kitchen. She efficiently fried eggs, snowflake beef, and bacon, toasted some bread, and prepared salad dressing. She also gave Lingzhi a glass of freshly squeezed juice.
While eating breakfast, Jiang Mingyue arranged the day’s schedule: “I have two major classes this morning. After class, I’ll go to the Academic Affairs Office to handle the major transfer application. In the afternoon, we need to go back to the hospital for a check-up to ensure everything is stable. Okay?”
“Okay,” Lu Lingzhi said, biting into her sandwich. “Tomorrow is September 30th, the start of the National Day holiday. Are you going home?”
“No.”
“Oh.”
Jiang Mingyue soon left for school. Lu Lingzhi opened her phone to find many incoming messages. Her sister, her mother, and her Little Mommy were all asking how she was doing after differentiating into an Alpha.
She saw a message from her best friend, Ji Yunyan:
Ji Yunyan: I bought a new smart mattress, it’s amazing. It’s from Shisheng Group, go buy one. Guess who their global spokesperson is? A superstar you definitely know. Can you help me get an autographed photo?
Ji Yunyan: Er-er, my Er-er, why aren’t you replying to me?
Ji Yunyan (talking to herself): Fine, if you’re not replying, you must still be recovering. I’ve decided to magnanimously forgive you. Mwah, love ya, heart!
The latest message, however, took a sharp turn:
Ji Yunyan: Er-er!!! I heard you ended up at the police station? Was it for solicitation? Quick, tell me everything. What’s the deal? (Crazy melon-eating emoji)
Not active in class, but number one in gossiping. Lu Lingzhi’s lip twitched as she replied:
Lu Lingzhi: Student Ji, you should really transfer to the Journalism Department at Jing University. You’d definitely become a legendary reporter. The entertainment industry can’t do without you.
Ji Yunyan: Let me show you a huge ‘melon’ (scandal) from the Medical University.
After replying to all the messages, she rubbed her heavy forehead. She seemed exceptionally sleepy lately, was this normal for the differentiation period?
She checked her family’s physical exam records on an app. Her sister’s pheromone concentration was 13, a top-tier Omega value. Her own was between 1.5 and 2.5. Alpha pheromones, fluctuating between A-rank and Top-rank.
Going from an A-rank Omega to a high-rank Alpha was a good thing, one should be content.
She checked the records again. Her sister (Top Omega), her Little Mommy (Top Alpha), and her mother (S-rank Omega) had never experienced this level of lethargy. Including the two previous loops, she had slept for nearly 16 hours and still hadn’t recovered her usual energy.
Her gaze accidentally swept over the dining table, where she noticed a workbook. She flipped it open, it was Jiang Mingyue’s. The handwriting was elegant, and it looked like the assignment was due this morning.
“Such a bad memory,” Lu Lingzhi muttered. “But since you made me breakfast…” The breakfast really was delicious. Without much hesitation, she decided to deliver it to her. She was bored anyway.
Before leaving, she went to the mirror and took a suppressant patch from the drawer, skillfully applying it to the gland on the back of her neck. Though her pheromones were stable, it was better to be safe, especially on a crowded campus.
In the mirror, the girl in a white T-shirt and jeans looked fresh and sharp, her eyes clear, already possessing the heroic spirit of an Alpha. She put on a hat and a mask. As the “School Beauty” of Jing University, it was normal to have pursuers even at the Medical University.
As she stepped out, her phone vibrated. Ji Yunyan had forwarded the Medical University forum scandal to her.
Medical University Lecture Hall
When Jiang Mingyue walked into the lecture hall, she drew many stares.
Finally, class ended. She went to the restroom. While washing her hands, her gaze caught a small flyer stuck to the stall door. The paper was rough, the handwriting messy:
*”Need money fast? Want a quick loan? Contact *****”
She frowned, disgusted by such illegal campus ads, tore it off, and threw it in the trash. When she returned to the classroom door, she found the teacher was delayed, and the room was buzzing with gossip.
When people saw Jiang Mingyue, the whispering stopped. “What’s wrong?”
Su Xi handed her phone to her. “Mingyue, look at the school forum! This… what is going on?”
Jiang Mingyue took the phone and clicked the trending post. The title was inflammatory:
[Deep Dive: The Relationship Between Med-Uni’s Jian Cheng and School Beauty Jiang Mingyue. Two Days in a Hotel? A Day Trip to the Police Station?]
The post vividly described her disappearance, claiming she and Jian Cheng were caught at the Cloud Top Hot Spring Hotel during a police raid for solicitation. It included photos of Jiang Mingyue and Jian Cheng getting into a police car, as well as photos of them entering the hotel, bypassing the front desk, and getting into the elevator on the same floor.
Jiang Mingyue’s face darkened instantly. “Fabricated! Pure rumors!”
Su Xi looked at her, worried and curious. “Then… what actually happened? Why are there these photos? Why were you at the hotel together and taken by the police?”
Jiang Mingyue knew that without an explanation, the rumors would only get worse. She explained quietly: “Jiang Group is currently in talks to acquire the Cloud Top Hot Spring Hotel. That day, Lu Lingzhi suddenly felt unwell at the hotel. I was worried and went to check on her. As for Jian Cheng, he followed me. I have no relationship with him, let alone ‘getting a room’.”
Though her voice was low, it attracted onlookers. Most people didn’t believe the part about the hotel acquisition. The whispering continued until the teacher arrived.
After the next class, a girl blocked Jiang Mingyue’s path. It was Fang Yuan, the Head of the Student Union’s Organization Department.
As a member of the department, Jiang Mingyue had dealt with her often. Fang Yuan was a well-known “rich girl,” wealthy but arrogant. Because Jiang Mingyue was always meticulous and left no room for error, Fang Yuan had never found a reason to target her and because of the rumors that Mingyue was the heiress of the Jiang Hotel Group, Fang Yuan had been relatively polite.
This was a miniature society.
“Junior Jiang, the Organization Department office needs cleaning. Everyone else has gone home for the holiday. Could you help me clean it?”
Jiang Mingyue wanted to refuse, she was waiting for Lu Lingzhi and didn’t want to deal with Fang Yuan. But then she figured there was no need to cause trouble over a small thing. She was transferring to the Psychology Department after the holiday anyway. She nodded. “Okay, Senior Fang.”
On the way, Fang Yuan prodded: “Junior Jiang, I heard you went to the police station yesterday?”
Jiang Mingyue’s internal alarm went off, but she remained calm. “Yes, something happened at the Cloud Top Hotel. Someone called the police, and I just went to provide a statement.” She intentionally kept the focus vague, not mentioning Lu Lingzhi to avoid making her the next target of gossip.
“Does it really have nothing to do with Jian Cheng?” Fang Yuan stopped at the door of the newly renovated office. The air was thick with the pungent smell of formaldehyde.
Jiang Mingyue shook her head. “Senior, I’ve made it clear on social media. I like an Alpha, but that person is definitely not Jian Cheng.”
Fang Yuan stared at her with a complex gaze, jealousy, scrutiny, and a hint of gloom. It passed quickly, and she regained her haughty expression.
“Senior, the formaldehyde smell is quite strong,” Jiang Mingyue noted. Having spent time with Lu Lingzhi, she had become sensitive to smells.
“It’s a new office, it’s bound to smell. The Student Union gave us priority, just bear with it.” Fang Yuan unlocked the door. “Get in. Let’s finish quickly so we can leave.”
The door opened to reveal boxes of stationery and files. As Jiang Mingyue bent over to pick up a broom, a massive force suddenly hit her from behind.
“Ah!” Jiang Mingyue was caught off guard and shoved to the ground. Her elbows and knees slammed into the floor, and her phone slid out of her pocket with a thud, landing at Fang Yuan’s feet.
A malicious light flashed in Fang Yuan’s eyes as she picked up the phone. “Jiang Mingyue, you aren’t the Jiang Group heiress at all. I called the Jiang Hotel Group, and they said their eldest daughter is focused on her studies and doesn’t handle hotel business. The person in charge is ‘Little President Jiang’.”
She stepped closer, looking down at the fallen Jiang Mingyue. “I heard the Jiang siblings are close, and Little President Jiang dotes on his sister. But when you were hospitalized last time, why didn’t he visit? Did you try to seduce Jian Cheng and, when it failed, frame him and get him arrested?”
Jiang Mingyue was almost laughing from anger. Her limbs throbbed with pain, but she tilted her chin up. “Fang Yuan, do you hear the nonsense you’re spewing? An Omega like me chooses partners through ‘upward compatibility.’ Jian Cheng?”
She sneered. “You think he’s a treasure, but not everyone does. He isn’t even a proper heir. What would I want from him? His delusions? A trip to the police station?”
Jiang Mingyue thought to herself that if she could stand up, she would definitely slap Fang Yuan.
CRASH!!
Fang Yuan slammed the door shut and locked it from the outside. Immediately after, Jiang Mingyue heard a sharp sound from the window. Fang Yuan had thrown her phone out into the corridor window.
Modern villains didn’t talk much, they were afraid of dying from too much exposition.
If Fang Yuan is the villain, then Lu the Second, the hero, you better get here fast.
The room fell into dimness and silence. Jiang Mingyue struggled to stand but hissed in pain. Her arm was already numb from Lu Lingzhi sleeping on it all night, and now her elbow had hit a desk corner hard. Her knees were scraped, and blood was starting to bead on her pale skin.
Outside the Teaching Building
Lu Lingzhi had arrived at the Medical University. She sent a WeChat to Chang Xi.
Lu Lingzhi: Little Mommy, I’m waiting for Mingyue to handle her transfer. Are you around? If so, I’ll bring you a Starbucks. If not, Mingyue and I are heading to the General Hospital, I can bring you one there.
Chang Xi: Just treat Jiang Bao to one. The extra money is for your holiday, buy something yummy. Jiang Bao gets some too, don’t be jealous. [Transfer: 2688 RMB]
Lu Lingzhi beamed as she accepted the transfer, her fingers flying.
Lu Lingzhi (Rainbow Farts mode): Thank you to the most beautiful Little Mommy in the universe! Mwah, mwah!
For a gold mine like her, she would always provide top-tier emotional value.
Just then…
BOOM!!!
A heavy object plummeted from above, barely missing the tip of her nose, crashing onto the pavement in front of her with a deafening thud. Shards of screen and components flew everywhere.
Lu Lingzhi froze in shock. She truly had to thank her Little Mommy’s transfer for delaying her by a few seconds, or that object would have cracked her skull open.
Trembling, she messaged Chang Xi.
Lu Lingzhi: Little Mommy, someone just threw something out of the teaching building! It almost crushed me! [Crying emoji]
Chang Xi: Which building? Tell me exactly where. I’ll call security to check the cameras. Don’t be scared, Lu Bao.
Lu Lingzhi patted her chest, her eyes landing on the shattered remains of the phone. She stepped forward and nudged the pieces with her toe. Suddenly, she saw something familiar, half of a campus meal card embedded in the phone case.
Are Med-Uni students fighting? Did someone get caught cheating? Med-Uni sure is lively…
She bent down to pick up the card. Under the transparent cover, the photo and name were clearly visible.
Jiang Mingyue.
Lu Lingzhi’s pupils contracted instantly.
Jiang Mingyue’s phone was thrown from a height. She was in danger.
Lu Lingzhi (Urgently): System, initiate the reset.
