Medical University Dormitory
Jiang Mingyue’s return to the dorm startled Su Xi. Since the start of the semester, Mingyue had almost never spent a night there. Su Xi set down her phone and approached her. “Mingyue? Not going home this Saturday?”
“I felt like staying in the dorm for a bit.”
Su Xi’s gossip radar pinged instantly. She scrambled down from her bunk, sliding over to Mingyue’s desk in her slippers. Eyeing Mingyue’s expressionless profile, she asked cautiously, “So, Mingyue… are you staying here because of that thing with Senior Jian Cheng? Did you and Lu have a fight?”
Jiang Mingyue was bewildered. She had fought with Lu Lingzhi, but what did Jian Cheng have to do with it? “What do you mean?”
Su Xi perked up, shoving her phone screen in front of Mingyue’s face. “Look! It’s blowing up! That video of Senior Jian Cheng confessing to you at the bar, some jerk filmed it and leaked it to the group chats. It’s everywhere now.”
The headline read: “SHOCK! Medical University Student Union President Suffers Waterloo in Confession; New Campus Belle Already Taken. Mysterious ‘Second Young Lady’ Appears to Intercept!”
“That’s not even the craziest part.” Su Xi swiped rapidly through forum screenshots. “Everyone is trying to figure out who the ‘Second Young Lady’ who took you away is! Someone explicitly named her as the Belle of Peking University, Lu Lingzhi. Now the Med Uni students and Peking Uni students are at each other’s throats.”
Med Uni Student A: This ‘Second Young Lady’ is definitely Lu Lingzhi from Peking Uni. Why was she at a bar? Probably looking for an Alpha.
Peking Uni Finance Student A: Impossible. Why would Lu Lingzhi need to go to your Med University to find an Alpha? We have plenty in the Finance Department.
Med Uni Student B: Heh, your Finance Department? A known den of scum Alphas. Our Senior Jian Cheng is top-tier in character and academics, he’s leagues above your lot.
Peking Uni Finance Student B: Your Senior Jian Cheng was rejected by Belle Jiang, so now you’re trying to link her to our Lu Lingzhi? Lu Lingzhi is a solo queen. Besides, everyone from high school knows they were arch-enemies. They haven’t spoken in years. Why would Lu Lingzhi show up to save Jiang Mingyue? Make your fanfiction believable!
“See?” Su Xi retracted her phone, looking worried. “They’re fighting so hard. But on Friday, I saw Lu being so gentle with you. They don’t look like enemies at all.”
Jiang Mingyue scrolled to the second page of screenshots:
Peking Uni Lit Student C: I actually ship the Two Belles CP. It’s like a ‘high school rivals reunited in college’ trope. Sparks flying everywhere!
Peking Uni Finance Student (Ji Yunyan): Lu Lingzhi’s orientation is normal. She wouldn’t go to a bar.
Peking Uni Lit Student D: @Ji Yunyan, are you implying Belle Jiang’s orientation is towards Omegas?
Med Uni Student D: Great! Does that mean I have a chance?
Su Xi continued indignantly, “Mingyue, how can you laugh? They’re getting more ridiculous by the second. Especially that high school classmate of yours, Ji Yunyan, she’s basically ‘confirming’ that Lu Lingzhi wouldn’t go. But I’ve heard Lu’s voice, that person at the bar was definitely her.” She watched Mingyue closely. “Should we clarify this?”
“Clarify what?” Jiang Mingyue interrupted smoothly, plugging in her phone. Her voice was calm. “Let them argue.” She stood up and grabbed her toiletries. “If they want to call us arch-enemies, fine. It’s better that way.”
Better? Su Xi stared blankly at Mingyue’s retreating back. Her roommate’s reaction was… eerily calm. Almost as if she enjoyed being rumored to like Omegas?
Ding ding.
A WeChat notification. Mingyue stepped out of the washroom and checked the time, nearly 7:00 PM. Frowning, she wondered if that stubborn girl had ordered dinner. She called her family’s hotel. “Did Miss Lu order food?”
“Yes, Eldest Miss. Miss Lu just placed an order.”
“Avoid high oil and high calories. Send some fruit over as well.”
“Understood.”
Only then did she open WeChat to see a message from [Student Union President Jian Cheng].
Jian Cheng: Junior Jiang, may I ask… do you prefer Alphas or Omegas?
Jiang Mingyue: I like Alphas. I already have someone I like. I’m sorry.
After replying, her fingers didn’t stop. She clicked the viral video link and posted a comment under it. Her comment instantly shot to the top:
Jiang Mingyue: Thanks for the concern. I like Alphas.
This comment was a double-edged sword. First, it stated her preference. Second, it subtly implied that the “mysterious person” from that night was an Alpha, thereby clearing Lu Lingzhi of suspicion since everyone believed Lu Lingzhi was still an Omega.
No one knew Lu Lingzhi was undergoing a secondary differentiation into an Alpha.
Jiang Mingyue tucked her phone away, a deep look in her eyes. Once Lu Lingzhi officially becomes an Alpha, and she “happens” to love this specific Alpha… who could possibly point a finger at her then?
The Internet Cafe
In a smoky, dimly lit corner of an internet cafe outside campus, Jian Cheng and his roommate, Tian You, were huddled in a private booth.
The screen displayed the sensational headline Tian You had crafted. To avoid school monitors, they had come here to stir the pot.
“Jian-ge, look,” Tian You pointed at a paused frame of Lu Lingzhi’s side profile in the bar. “I compared this to photos from the Peking Uni website. This is 99% Lu Lingzhi.”
Jian Cheng’s face was grim. As an A-grade Alpha and Student Union President, he was proud. Being publicly rejected and then ghosted by Jiang Mingyue was a pill he couldn’t swallow.
“Jian-ge, Lu Lingzhi is likely just a commoner,” Tian You added. “But someone wiped her online history. Her background is a total mystery.”
Jian Cheng pondered. “Then where did that Rolls-Royce umbrella come from?”
“Maybe Jiang Mingyue lent it to her? Her family owns a hotel chain; they have luxury cars.” Tian You noticed Jian Cheng checking his phone. Jian Cheng showed him the reply.
Jiang Mingyue: I like Alphas. I already have someone I like. I’m sorry.
Jian Cheng lit a cigarette, inhaling deeply. “Do you think she’s telling the truth? Or is ‘having someone I like’ just an excuse?”
Before Tian You could answer, a notification popped up on the forum.
[Jiang Mingyue: Thanks for the concern. I like Alphas.]
Tian You analyzed, “She went public with the Alpha preference. She wouldn’t lie about something that fundamental. As for ‘the person she likes’…” He thought back to the start of the semester. “Remember when she arrived? Only her brother was with her. If there were a significant Alpha, wouldn’t they have shown up to mark their territory? Alphas are possessive. It’s probably a crush or a lie.”
Jian Cheng crushed his cigarette. Tian You’s logic reignited his competitive spark. “You’re right. On Monday, I’ll find her and ask her face to face!”
“Wait, Jian-ge. Someone wants to meet you. They want to acquire the Winding Peak Hot Spring Hotel.”
“Who?”
“Jiang Mingzhao. Jiang Mingyue’s older brother, the crown prince of the Jiang Group.”
