- Chapter 14 - We Are Just Relatively Good Friends
Outside the West Gate of Jingda University
The high noon sun was a bit scorching, its rays refracting coldly off Jiang Mingyue’s expensive sunglasses through the windshield. She sat in the driver’s seat of her understated yet luxurious car, her fingertips mindlessly tapping the steering wheel.
Lu Lingzhi appeared outside. Instead of heading for the passenger side, she knocked on the driver’s window. The Second Young Lady’s radiant face was framed in the window, the sunlight gilding her features with a faint golden glow, softening her haughty brow.
Jiang Mingyue rolled down the window. “Get in.”
“I’m driving; you go to the passenger seat. You owe me a slap.”
The two quickly swapped places. Lu Lingzhi sat in the driver’s seat of the Panamera, familiarly adjusting the seat before pressing the start button.
Swoosh.
On the windshield, the wipers traced two elegant, albeit slightly foolish, arcs at an inappropriate moment.
The air froze instantly.
Lu Lingzhi’s body stiffened. A flash of embarrassment crossed her face, but she immediately stiffened her expression, explaining with a tone of certainty that suggested ‘it’s the car’s fault, not mine’: “Your car is too dirty.”
Jiang Mingyue retorted weakly, “…I just had it washed before I came.” Her voice was so small it was practically scattered by the air conditioning.
She was met with Lu Lingzhi’s cold profile.
Lu Lingzhi stared at the row of gear shifts, her brow furrowed in deep thought. At home, she drove Mercedes-Benz models like a pro.
Why is this different from her family’s Mercedes? What is this button for? Why does a Panamera’s gear shift look different from a Mercedes?
P, R, N, D.
Her family’s Mercedes was easy to remember: push up for R, push down for D, and P was in the middle. Her mind was a tangled mess of black coils, her CPU burning up. Her finger hovered in mid-air, hesitating to descend. Jiang Mingyue watched her, sensibly fastened her seatbelt, and silently began scrolling through her phone, knowing better than to disturb the driver.
Minutes ticked by… two minutes… five minutes…
The interior of the car was silent, save for the hum of the AC and Lu Lingzhi’s wordless anxiety. Finally unable to bear it, Jiang Mingyue urged cautiously, “Second Young Lady, can we go now?”
Feeling as though she had been caught peeking, Lu Lingzhi instantly closed the video flashing on her screen: Panamera Beginner’s Operation Guide (Detailed with Pictures).
She forced herself to stay calm, even adding a hint of offended indignation: “I’m looking up where we’re going! What’s the rush? Don’t you know it’s noon and everyone is in a hurry to get off work and eat? This lady has driven mountain roads and highways.”
Jiang Mingyue’s lips twitched, letting out an emotionless “Heh.”
She decisively turned her gaze toward the innocent blue sky and white clouds outside. It takes five minutes of staring at the gear shift to look up a destination? Could this excuse be any faker?
She’s pretending not to know how to drive.
The Second Young Lady’s acting has improved. I’ll just sit quietly and watch her perform.
I’ll give her an out in a moment.
On the window glass, a faint, schadenfreude-filled curve of Jiang Mingyue’s lips was reflected. But before her smile could fully bloom, it distorted into terror, the car suddenly lurched backward!
Jiang Mingyue: ???
Just then…
Thump! A dull sound. Without warning, the car surged backward at a startling speed, followed by a sudden brake so violent it felt like it would toss one’s internal organs out.
“Ah!” Jiang Mingyue was scared out of her wits, clutching her seatbelt so hard her fingers nearly tore through it. She curled into a ball, trembling.
Finally, the car came to a halt.
Jiang Mingyue panted heavily, she felt like she was about to shatter.
She doesn’t know how to drive?
She REALLY doesn’t know how to drive!!!
Help! Someone, please understand! I actually naively believed she was just acting. I must be crazy.
Lu Lingzhi hadn’t expected to cause such an accident while driving a Panamera. She glanced at Jiang Mingyue’s shaken state and originally wanted to apologize, but then she remembered the smug expression she’d caught on Jiang Mingyue’s reflection just moments ago.
That tiny bit of guilt vanished instantly.
Lu Lingzhi gripped the steering wheel with her left hand and tapped it with her right. Giving someone a slap was nothing compared to the thrill of this kind of pressure.
Actually, she did know how to drive a Panamera. Initially, she wanted Jiang Mingyue to think she was a novice to scare her to see that look of fear. She planned to play the part for a bit and then hand the wheel back.
Why did she do it?
She felt split. She clearly didn’t want to care about Jiang Mingyue’s business, yet whenever she saw that hurt look in Mingyue’s eyes, her emotions were inexplicably swayed.
What had she been doing these past few days?
Finding out Jiang Mingyue was upset over a confession, she took her away. When Jiang Mingyue went to the hospital for low blood sugar, she visited, paid the bills, and gave her chocolate. When Jiang Mingyue was being insulted, she cleared her name.
She had clearly promised her sister.
She and Jiang Mingyue were supposed to go their separate ways. They were supposed to be strangers, yet they were doing things only good friends do.
As for just now, it was a complete accident.
Her gland had suddenly flared with sharp pain, causing her foot to slip on the accelerator. Fortunately, nothing happened.
Though her heart was racing with panic, her expression remained breezy. Her gaze fell on Jiang Mingyue, and she curled her lips into a wicked smile: “How was it? My racing skills, thrilling enough for you?”
Jiang Mingyue’s heart was still pounding. She pursed her dry lips.
She’s actually joking about this? She can still laugh?
If there hadn’t been a lack of pedestrians and vehicles nearby, the two of them might have gone to meet their ancestors today! When did she become so reckless and impulsive?
Jiang Mingyue took a deep breath, but her voice turned cold, suppressing a thin veil of anger: “Get out.”
She unbuckled her seatbelt, pushed the door open, walked around to the driver’s side, and pulled it open. She made a “please” gesture to Lu Lingzhi, her eyes calm but carrying silent pressure.
Lu Lingzhi saw that she was clearly angry and wanted to explain, but the words died in her throat. She bit her lip and didn’t argue further.
Jiang Mingyue sat in the driver’s seat. The first thing she did was lean over, pull the passenger seatbelt across, and click it into place for Lu Lingzhi. She adjusted the seat’s tilt and turned on the seat massage function.
Let this ancestor sit comfortably and stay quiet for a while so she doesn’t cause any more trouble.
The massage function greatly relieved the discomfort in Lu Lingzhi’s gland.
Jiang Mingyue focused on the wheel, her eyes straight ahead. The lines of her profile were tense, showing she was still fuming and merely using silence to express her dissatisfaction.
The atmosphere in the car dropped to freezing point.
The Western Restaurant
The two entered the restaurant and followed the server to a vacant table. Soft light flowed over the exquisite tableware. The server placed the final main course and quietly withdrew.
Lu Lingzhi took a piece of bread from the basket, dipped it into a creamy truffle honey cheese sauce, and put it in her mouth. The rich milky scent and the unique aroma of truffle melted on her tongue, slightly smoothing out the agitation from her earlier “speed and passion” moment.
However, Jiang Mingyue’s stony face was ruining her appetite.
“Jiang Mingyue, stop scowling. You’re affecting my meal.”
Jiang Mingyue didn’t speak.
Lu Lingzhi picked up a delicate silver spoon and took a scoop of cold sea salt ice cream. The refreshing, sweet and salty taste spread across her tongue. She squinted at Jiang Mingyue, when her face wasn’t stiff, she was actually quite pretty.
Now that her mood had improved, she felt like gossiping. Ji Yunyan had said that Jiang Mingyue liked Omegas.
In high school, Jiang Mingyue loved running to their classroom. Lu Lingzhi originally thought Mingyue had her eye on her seatmate, Pei Song, who was ranked number one on the school’s Alpha “Campus Belle” list and was a top-tier Alpha. Pei Song was aloof and didn’t pay much attention to any Omega except for Lu Lingzhi, of course.
If Jiang Mingyue liked Omegas, she must have a crush on someone.
Lu Lingzhi mentally ran through all of Jiang Mingyue’s Omega friends from elementary, middle, and high school, but there seemed to be no clues.
What counts as “liking”? Kissing, hugging, giving gifts, sleeping together.
I can’t guess just by speculating; I might as well ask.
“Jiang Mingyue, we used to be relatively good friends, right?”
What does she mean by ‘scowling affects her appetite’? Shouldn’t she be reflecting on what just happened? How can she act like nothing’s wrong? How can she care so little for life?
She needs to know how serious it is to ignore traffic rules and safety. If something happened to her, wouldn’t her family worry? Does she even have a brain?
I don’t want to talk to her. I don’t want to speak to this troublemaker.
Jiang Mingyue kept her lashes low, elegantly cutting her steak and chewing slowly. Feeling the other’s burning gaze and hearing the question again…
Relatively good friends.
Why ‘relatively good friends’? How could our relationship just be ‘friends’? We’ve kissed, we’ve hugged, we’ve even slept in the same bed. We have a cat together.
She grew even angrier.
In your eyes, we are just ‘relatively good friends’? I can’t even compare to you and Pei Song.
Pei Song is your ‘best friend’ for life. Have you two kissed, hugged, or slept together? Have you raised a cat together? No. Oh, I remember now, back in school, she used to praise you every day, saying you were prettier than me.
Clang.
