Gazing at the person before her, whose laughter had smoothed the furrows of their brows, Qi Zhi’e’s lips curved into a faint smile. The sharp iciness that usually surrounded her seemed to melt into spring water, yet the depths of her eyes grew even more unfathomable.
Since she was accompanying Qi Zhi’e to the hospital, Bian You called Assistant Zhou to briefly arrange her work. However, Qi Zhi’e, feeling still too exhausted, didn’t plan to head to the hospital too early. She wanted to take a nap first before going.
Hearing this, though Bian You was eager to know about her condition, she couldn’t bear to see her so worn out. So, she didn’t oppose the decision.
When Qi Zhi’e went into the bedroom for her nap, Bian You didn’t dare follow this time. After all, the estrus period was a special circumstance, and now that they were both clear-headed, sharing a bed again would seem rather reckless.
By three in the afternoon, the two arrived at the private hospital.
Since Qi Zhi’e had already made arrangements beforehand, they were immediately attended to upon arrival. A series of examinations was scheduled, and Bian You stayed by Qi Zhi’e’s side the entire time, her heart pounding anxiously. Unfortunately, she couldn’t decipher the data displayed on the specialized equipment and could only wait for the doctor’s final report after the examinations.
From three until six, even with everything proceeding smoothly, the ordeal left Qi Zhi’e visibly fatigued, her brows faintly creased with weariness.
Seeing her like this, Bian You’s heart ached. While the doctors gathered to discuss the results, she took Qi Zhi’e to the rest area and had dinner brought in.
“Eat something to keep your strength up. We’ll probably be busy for a while longer,” Bian You said, arranging the dishes in front of Qi Zhi’e, almost ready to feed her directly.
Qi Zhi’e’s lips curved slightly, her voice soft as she replied, “You should eat too. You’ve been busy all day, thank you for your hard work.”
“N-no, it’s nothing…” Bian You’s cheeks flushed at her gentle tone, her heart softening uncontrollably, joy bubbling up once more.
Qi Zhi’e said no more, eating lightly before closing her eyes to rest, easing her slightly throbbing nerves.
Truthfully, from the moment they arrived at the hospital, her heart had been on edge, her nerves stretched taut.
She feared the results might be worse than she anticipated.
Fortunately, the outcome didn’t exceed Qi Zhi’e’s expectations and remained within an acceptable range.
Doctor: “Director Qi, your current condition isn’t severe, but it is somewhat complex. Your body itself is fine, but your gland’s indicators are fluctuating abnormally, showing signs of hormonal imbalance. And…”
The doctor paused, and Bian You, puzzled, noticed the hesitant glance directed her way, as if unsure whether to continue.
After a brief hesitation, Bian You asked, “Is this something I shouldn’t hear? Should I step out?”
The doctor looked to Qi Zhi’e for guidance.
Qi Zhi’e fell silent briefly, thoughts racing before she calmly said, “Go ahead. There’s nothing she can’t hear.”
Since this concerned gland-related issues, Bian You’s cooperation would inevitably be needed in the future. There was no point in keeping her in the dark, leaving her anxious and confused outside.
Hearing her say this, the doctor didn’t hesitate to explain: “Your EV levels are far below normal. When this value is too low, it means that if you’re ever marked in the future, your dependence on your Alpha will far exceed that of a typical Omega.”
“This could lead to excessive dependency.”
However, excessive dependency when a partner is given no personal space at all often becomes the beginning of a relationship’s breakdown over time.
And…
As everyone knew, Bian You had no pheromones, which meant she couldn’t mark an Omega. But with Qi Zhi’e’s condition, she would inevitably live in constant anxiety in the future.
Moreover, this situation clearly wasn’t ideal for Qi Zhi’e either. Becoming overly dependent on someone due to a mark would cause her to lose part of herself something a person like Qi Zhi’e would never accept.
Sure enough, after hearing the doctor’s words, Qi Zhi’e’s expression darkened immediately, her thin lips pressed tightly together.
Bian You was momentarily stunned by the doctor’s explanation. She turned to look at Qi Zhi’e and, seeing her reaction, knew her mood had clearly soured.
After some thought, Bian You said, “At least while she’s with me, she won’t have to worry about being marked.”
After all, she was incapable of marking anyone.
But she was also well aware that her current relationship with Qi Zhi’e wasn’t even based on mutual affection like real couples. Who could say what might happen in the future?
Even couples who were deeply in love could break up over various issues.
So all she could guarantee was that, during the time Qi Zhi’e was with her, she wouldn’t have to worry about being marked, and thus wouldn’t have her emotional judgment clouded by the hormonal effects of a bond.
But the concern was that if they ever broke up in the future and Qi Zhi’e met someone else someone who could mark her this issue might lead to conflict.
Qi Zhi’e tilted her head to look at Bian You, only to see her wearing an earnest expression, not the least bit ashamed that, as an Alpha, she couldn’t mark her Omega.
Of course, even if Bian You could mark her, Qi Zhi’e wouldn’t allow it.
Her eyes lowered slightly, dark and unreadable.
“Is there any way to bring her EV levels back to normal?” Bian You then asked.
“We’ll prescribe medication shortly. Ms. Qi will need to take it as directed and return for regular check-ups so we can monitor the changes and adjust the treatment plan accordingly.” After saying this, the doctor chose her words carefully before adding to Bian You, “Of course, during this period, Ms. Bian should also pay attention to Ms. Qi’s pheromone levels. If they become excessively high, certain… measures will need to be taken promptly.”
“Suppressants can be used, but we recommend minimizing their use.”
At first, Bian You didn’t grasp what “measures” the doctor meant. But when she mentioned using fewer suppressants, a fleeting thought made her suddenly realize the implication.
Her face flushed with awkward embarrassment.
Did this mean that whenever Qi Zhi’e’s pheromones spiked whether during heat or not they’d have to treat it like a heat?
The tips of her ears turned slightly red as her gaze kept drifting toward Qi Zhi’e. She noticed Qi Zhi’e’s expression remained calm, as if completely unfazed by the doctor’s words, giving no indication of how she felt about the situation.
A faint sense of disappointment crept into her heart.
Qi Zhi’e naturally sensed the emotional shift in the person beside her, but she wasn’t in the mood to feign concern or cater to her feelings. After another brief exchange with the doctor, she finally took the medicine and left the hospital with Bian You.
When they had arrived, the sun was still high in the sky, its bright yet gentle rays bringing warmth and comfort. But by the time they left, night had already fallen. The LED lights on the towering buildings flickered and shimmered, painting everything in a dazzling, vibrant display yet in stark contrast, it made people seem so small and insignificant in comparison.
Qi Zhi’e stood by the car door, hesitating to pull the handle and get in.
Seeing her like this, Bian You couldn’t quite gauge her mood. After a moment of hesitation, she softly asked, “Do you want to take a walk by the river?”
Qi Zhi’e turned to look at her. Bian You smiled gently, her eyes clear and bright.
Lowering her gaze, Qi Zhi’e opened the car door and got in. Just as Bian You settled in beside her, Qi Zhi’e suddenly spoke in a cold, distant tone.
“Just now, I had a very unsettling feeling.”
“It felt like someone was watching us.”
