Chapter 9: Choose Me or Him?
Ruan Mingyu looked at the newcomer, his expression changing.
However, this time was different from before; he had Song Chenxi backing him up.
He hid behind Song Chenxi, poking half his head out to say to Gong Lingdeng: “So what if I’m leaving? What business is it of yours?”
Gong Lingdeng: “Ruan Ruan saying that will hurt my feelings.”
Gong Lingdeng’s gaze swept over Song Chenxi’s face, then over Ruan Mingyu’s face, and he said: “Why don’t both you beauties come and be my guests at the Joyous Union Sect?”
Song Chenxi smiled innocuously, but his words were sharp and sarcastic: “Dead demon, go ask your ancestors underground to be your guests.”
Ruan Mingyu quietly asked Song Chenxi: “Senior Brother, can you beat him?”
Song Chenxi: “I can only try.” He drew his sword and told Ruan Mingyu: “You go first.”
Ruan Mingyu nodded. He was useless and would only be a burden.
He took off running, using the fastest speed he had ever managed in his life. He kept running until he was utterly exhausted.
When he really couldn’t run anymore, Ruan Mingyu slumped onto the ground, panting heavily.
Too tired.
He stood up and walked two more steps, realizing he truly had no strength left.
Ruan Mingyu suddenly remembered that, according to the novel’s plot, Song Chenxi’s cultivation was inferior to Gong Lingdeng’s at this point, which was why he would be captured.
After all, Song Chenxi was around the same age as him, and no matter how talented, he had only cultivated for a dozen or so years, while Gong Lingdeng had been cultivating for nearly a hundred years.
In other words, Song Chenxi was bound to lose!
Then why did he tell him to run?
Ruan Mingyu almost instantly wanted to turn back for Song Chenxi, but didn’t Gong Lingdeng admire Song Chenxi in the book? He probably wouldn’t do anything to him, right? Ruan Mingyu’s mind raced, and he shook his head. Driven by logic, he decided to continue walking forward.
There was a massive cave up ahead. Ruan Mingyu stood at the edge and glanced in; it was pitch black, and he couldn’t see anything clearly.
He’d better stay far away, lest he fall in and be unable to climb out.
However, he walked two steps and suddenly stopped.
Damn, he remembered! In the book, the universally attractive protagonist and Song Chenxi both fell into the cave and spent forty-nine years inside before emerging. Yes, that’s right, forty-nine years. In this world, the scale of time had ballooned to an extremely exaggerated degree.
How could he not escape the plot!
Ruan Mingyu had no strength left to run, so he found a hidden spot to hide, still worried about whether Song Chenxi could escape. What if he and Gong Lingdeng fell in together according to the plot? What then?
Ruan Mingyu hugged the tree, anxiously looking back in the direction he had come from, desperately hoping Song Chenxi would appear before him.
Something tapped him on the shoulder from behind.
Ruan Mingyu was looking intently in the distance: “Who is it? Don’t bother me.”
Wait, where would a second person come from in this place?
Ruan Mingyu quickly turned his head and saw Gong Lingdeng leaning in close: “Ah, caught you.”
Ruan Mingyu instinctively wanted to run, but Gong Lingdeng grabbed him by the collar.
Ruan Mingyu asked: “Where is my Senior Brother!”
Gong Lingdeng: “You should worry about yourself first.”
He threw Ruan Mingyu over his shoulder, giving him no chance to struggle.
Ruan Mingyu thought, I’m done for now.
Just then, he heard a shout: “Bastard, let go of my Junior Brother.”
Gong Lingdeng said: “Your Junior Brother? That’s my Ruan Ruan. I can let you go, as long as you leave Ruan Ruan behind.”
Song Chenxi laughed coldly: “Daydreaming.”
Gong Lingdeng: “You are no match for me.”
Song Chenxi appeared before him, covered in blood and with disheveled clothes, but his eyes were as resolute as ever. Ruan Mingyu had never seen him so battered. Song Chenxi usually used the best of everything, even making sure his hair was perfectly neat before going out, yet now he was in such a sorry state.
Song Chenxi showed a cold smile: “I won’t let you take him.”
The two started fighting again. Gong Lingdeng was inconvenienced by carrying Ruan Mingyu, so he tied him to a nearby tree.
Although Ruan Mingyu didn’t want to go with Gong Lingdeng, how could Song Chenxi, a bronze, beat a diamond!
He struggled to rub the ropes on his hands, trying to free himself from the restraints.
Over there, Song Chenxi and Gong Lingdeng had already exchanged many blows. Song Chenxi looked to be in bad shape, but what he lacked in martial power he made up for with verbal sparring. His infuriating skills hadn’t diminished, successfully enraging Gong Lingdeng into using deadly force.
Song Chenxi took a hit from him, and it took him a while to recover. Blood stained the corner of his mouth, but he still braced himself with his sword, swaying as he stood up.
Ruan Mingyu shouted loudly to Gong Lingdeng: “Let my Senior Brother go, and I’ll go with you!”
Gong Lingdeng: “Too late. Today, he must die.”
Song Chenxi wiped the blood from his face and said sternly: “Ruan Mingyu, don’t beg him.”
The plot had long bolted like a runaway horse, never to return. The second male lead was actually striking out violently against the universally attractive protagonist, even aiming for a deadly blow.
At this moment, Song Chenxi sheathed his sword. Gong Lingdeng covered his mouth and laughed: “Oh, you concede.”
Song Chenxi sneered: “To kill you, I don’t need a sword.”
Ruan Mingyu’s brow twitched. What was Song Chenxi planning?
He gave a sharp command, as if breaking some seal within his body, and several wisps of black demonic energy swirled around him.
“He’s actually a demonic cultivator!”
Two black and white phantoms violently entangled. Ruan Mingyu was dazzled, only knowing that the black one was Song Chenxi. Initially, he had the upper hand, beating the white phantom until it could barely fight back.
After fighting for an unknown amount of time, the black phantom suddenly stopped moving and fell straight down from the air.
The white phantom seized the opportunity to pursue, and with a “boom,” Gong Lingdeng threw Song Chenxi into the bottomless cave.
Ruan Mingyu tore the rope and rushed to the cave entrance, shouting: “Song Chenxi!”
No one answered him.
Why had the plot become like this? Although Ruan Mingyu and Song Chenxi had no deep feelings for each other, seeing a person disappear right before his eyes left him somewhat lost.
Gong Lingdeng walked up to him: “This cave is called the Bottomless Pit. It is the remnant of an ancient Soul Transformation stage cultivator. Once you enter, you can’t get out. Are you still hoping he’ll emerge to take you away? Ruan Ruan is a smart person; he knows how to make a choice.”
Ruan Mingyu faced the cruelty of this world for the first time; eliminating a living person was merely a casual act.
He told himself that Song Chenxi would be fine; he was the protagonist. Protagonists don’t die so easily. Song Chenxi didn’t die after falling in in the original book, so he certainly wouldn’t die now.
Gong Lingdeng stretched out his hand towards Ruan Mingyu. He was very confident that Ruan Mingyu would choose him.
People are always inclined to seek advantage and avoid harm. Moreover, Ruan Mingyu and his so-called Senior Brother didn’t seem to have a very close relationship; otherwise, he wouldn’t have repeatedly asked him to catch the Senior Brother when he was caught.
“Come here, Ruan Ruan,” Gong Lingdeng called out gently.
Ruan Mingyu stood before the cave entrance. He seemed to be thinking, perhaps already wavering.
Gong Lingdeng smiled, continuing to tempt him: “Ruan Ruan, do you choose me, or jump down to an uncertain fate? Follow me, and I will definitely treat you well. I can satisfy whatever you desire.”
That which is unattainable always causes a stir. If Ruan Mingyu hadn’t run away this time and had stayed in the Joyous Union Sect, Gong Lingdeng might have lost interest after a few years. But now, he had become a thorn in Gong Lingdeng’s side, which had to be pulled out.
As for the promises he made. People from the Joyous Union Sect never spoke with sincerity; not all words spoken had to be kept. Gong Lingdeng looked at Ruan Mingyu as if looking at a favorite object. Yes, he liked him very much now, so he absolutely had to get him. As for whether he would tire of him later, that was a matter for the future.
He claimed to give Ruan Mingyu a choice, yet he offered him no real option.
Ruan Mingyu looked at him, then looked at the cave entrance behind him, and made his choice without hesitation.
