- Chapter 7 - Linlin, slap her face
“Help me dress.” Su Mo coughed and instructed. His pale face flushed slightly from the strain of his uneven breathing.
“My Lady, I am truly fine. Your noble health is what matters most.” Ye Lin shook her head, tears streaming down her face.
“If you will not help me, I will do it myself.” Su Mo was unyielding, forcing his body to stand up so he could dress. Fearing that he might damage his health by overexerting himself, Ye Lin hurriedly went to assist him.
In the Imperial Household Department, Zhou Yanyu was leaning back with her legs crossed, triumphantly eating grapes. “Today was truly gratifying. We finally gave that little bitch Ye Lin a proper lesson!”
The nursemaid serving beside her chimed in with sycophantic flattery.
“A lowly creature, daring to talk back to me. She probably thought she still had Su Mo to back her up. Heh, he is just a useless piece of trash with his cultivation completely destroyed. With a flick of my finger, I could end his wretched life!” Zhou Yanyu sneered, her tone overflowing with arrogance and pride.
“Is that so?”
A steady male voice interrupted. Su Mo, tall and robust with an intense, intimidating presence, walked into the room.
“Greetings to the Empress!”
The expressions of those present changed drastically; they scrambled to their knees to pay their respects. Although Su Mo had been reduced to a cripple after his spiritual root was ripped out, the physical training he had practiced for a century was not in vain. His overly burly physique, combined with his fierce countenance, projected an overwhelming pressure. Usually, these servants would only dare to run their mouths when he was not around. Now that the person himself had appeared, they were scared witless.
Su Mo ignored them all and turned to Ye Lin. “Who beat you?”
Ye Lin quickly raised her hand and pointed. Two servants and an old nursemaid who served under Zhou Yanyu had all participated; they had held her to the ground to beat her. Only after venting their frustrations did Zhou Yanyu throw three Fire Gathering Stones onto the ground as if she were tossing scraps to a beggar.
“My Lady, please have mercy.” The three of them trembled, wailing and kowtowing incessantly.
“I will not make things difficult for you. The three of you will fight amongst yourselves until one is the victor. I will not pursue the matter further. If anyone holds back, I will take your lives myself!” Su Mo said indifferently.
The trembling servants exchanged glances and immediately lunged at each other. If they fought each other, they might survive. If Su Mo took action, they would surely be left without even their bones intact.
Ignoring the brawling trio, Su Mo turned his sharp gaze toward Zhou Yanyu. “Your subordinates do not know the rules, so today, I shall teach you properly how to conduct yourself!”
“You dare! Su Mo, do not push your luck! Do you intend to go against the Shuiyun Sect?!” Zhou Yanyu screamed in terror.
In the next second, Su Mo walked up to her, dislocated her jaw without a word, and kicked her kneecap. Zhou Yanyu broke into a cold sweat from the agony, unable to even scream. She collapsed onto the ground, her body shaking uncontrollably from the pain. Her eyes, filled with venomous resentment, remained fixed on him.
“Even if your mother were here, she would have to kneel and pay respects to me, let alone you. Linlin, slap her face!” Su Mo sneered, handing the stage to Ye Lin.
Ye Lin laughed excitedly and shouted, “Yes!” She rolled up her sleeves, channeled a bit of spiritual energy into her hands, grabbed Zhou Yanyu by the hair, and began to strike. The sounds of slapping echoed continuously. Zhou Yanyu’s face swelled into the shape of a pig’s head in an instant.
The department fell into chaos, but everyone feared Su Mo and dared not intervene.
Wen Muli had just brought Yan Yichen back to the palace when servants came running, trembling with fear to report that Su Mo was causing a scene at the Imperial Household Department. His brow furrowed instantly, and he was so annoyed that he actually laughed.
“Your Majesty, please do not be angry with Brother Su. He is modest and kind; he would certainly not provoke trouble intentionally. It must be the fault of these servants!” Seeing the situation, Yan Yichen immediately spoke up for Su Mo.
“You certainly take his side.” Wen Muli raised an eyebrow, his tone impossible to read.
“Of course! After all, it is thanks to Brother Su that I can accompany you in good health. Don’t be angry anymore, hmm? Let us go see what is happening.” Yan Yichen stuck out his tongue, actively hooked his finger around Wen Muli’s palm, and spoke in a syrupy sweet voice.
“You, how is it I never noticed before that you were such a troublemaker?” Wen Muli sighed with a smile and affectionately pinched the tip of his nose.
“You only just realized? It is too late to regret it now. I have latched onto you and cannot be returned!” Yan Yichen giggled, dragging Wen Muli along as they rushed toward the department.
When they arrived, Ye Lin was still striking away happily. The other three servants were in no better shape, their faces bruised and purple, still pulling each other’s hair.
“Absurd! What kind of behavior is this! Someone, drag them all away!” Wen Muli roared in fury.
Seeing him, Zhou Yanyu cried even more piteously, gesturing wildly at him for help. Ye Lin furiously landed one more slap on her face before retreating to stand behind Su Mo, who was sitting and sipping tea with composure.
“Brother Su! How is your health…” Seeing him, Yan Yichen’s eyes lit up as he rushed over.
“Heh, a cat crying over a mouse—feigned mercy!” Ye Lin muttered quietly behind Su Mo.
Yan Yichen ignored her and ran to Su Mo with a face full of flowers, only to find his complexion far too pale, his eyes filling with worry. “Your illness has not fully healed, why have you gotten out of bed? Did they bully you?”
As he spoke, he glared fiercely at Zhou Yanyu, who was whining on the ground.
Months had passed, and the two were in drastically different states. Although Yan Yichen had not yet begun his cultivation, his damaged spiritual root had been repaired, and he looked radiant; his pink robes made him appear all the more delicate and charming. In contrast, Su Mo, who was already fearsome in appearance, now looked pale, his lips tinged with blue, wrapped up like a bear, appearing even more wretched.
“Cough, cough, it is a small matter. What about you? Are you feeling better?” Su Mo smiled faintly, coughed, and asked, his gaze sweeping inadvertently over Wen Muli. The suspicion and guilt in the Emperor’s eyes were quickly hidden the moment he felt Su Mo’s gaze.
“What is going on here?” Wen Muli frowned, signaling his guards to reset Zhou Yanyu’s jaw so he could question her.
“Your Majesty, you must uphold justice for me. The Empress stormed in without a word and began punishing your servants.” Zhou Yanyu, thick skinned as she was, sobbed while distorting the truth. She was certain Wen Muli would stand up for her. Others might not know the history between them, but she certainly did!
“You are spewing nonsense! It was clearly you who were flaunting your power while holding the Phoenix Seal. My master lost his spiritual root and cannot withstand the cold of the Heart Sealing Palace. I only wanted to request a few Fire Gathering Stones, but you threw me to the ground and humiliated me. You called my master an ugly freak and said that as a man, he was shameless for serving beneath another man, even lower than a prostitute in a brothel!” Ye Lin stood with her hands on her hips, blurting out a description of Zhou Yanyu’s crimes.
These words were truly hateful; it was insubordination of the highest order. Even if Su Mo had taken her life on the spot, it would not have been excessive.
