- Chapter 13 - Madman, That Man Is Not Worth Your Life
The tone of what sounded like a final farewell caused Wen Muli to frown. Before he could respond, a thunderous boom erupted in the sky, followed immediately by a tremor that shook the earth.
“What is happening?” Wen Muli demanded, his expression cold and stern.
“Your Majesty, this is a disaster! A hole has appeared in the defensive barrier!” The spiritual officer in charge of the array rushed into the hall, his panicked voice echoing through the chamber.
The peace of the human realm and the prosperity of its people relied entirely on the great protective array established by Wen Muli. This array was immensely powerful and impossible to breach from the outside. There was only one possibility for a rupture to occur: it had been sabotaged from within.
Almost instantly, Wen Muli’s icy gaze swept toward Su Mo. Before Su Mo could react, he was seized by the throat.
“Where exactly were you seven days ago!” Wen Muli’s voice was filled with fury.
“Do you think I did this?” Su Mo asked, his eyes brimming with desolation as he offered a bitter smile.
“Your Majesty, please let him go! This could not have been done by Brother Su. He is devoted to you heart and soul. Even if the entire world betrayed you, he would never do so!” Yan Yichen stepped forward, his eyes filled with anxiety, trying to pull Wen Muli’s hand away.
“What do you know? If it were not for him, you would not have been forced into reincarnation!” Wen Muli gritted his teeth in anger.
However, he yielded to Yan Yichen’s plea and released his grip. He disliked Su Mo, but he was not irrational. The matter was certainly not that simple. It was likely connected to the ruptures in other realms and the murder of Zhou Yanyu a few days ago. Su Mo was an orphan; apart from Wen Muli, he had no family or confidants in this world. It was impossible for him to have accomplished this alone. Who could it be?
Wen Muli quickly regained his composure. The immediate priority was to repair the breach in the barrier.
“Notify all cultivators to prepare for battle. Gather all spiritual officers and follow me to the site to repair the grand array!” He ordered loudly, summoning his spirit sword and departing. Everyone else scrambled to their posts, preparing for the crisis.
Yan Yichen stared coldly at the retreating group, the corners of his mouth lifting in an imperceptible smirk. When he turned back, he met Su Mo’s calm gaze. Acting as if nothing had happened, Yan Yichen reached out to take his hand. Su Mo stepped back, refusing the touch.
Yan Yichen pursed his lips in feigned awkwardness, his eyes filling with worry. “Will His Majesty be alright?”
His acting skills remained impressive, refined to a degree that even Su Mo found admirable. Su Mo realized he possessed no such talent; while he was playing a role, he was essentially just acting as himself.
“He will be fine. Having weathered so many storms, he will not fall now. Do not worry.” Su Mo answered with an air of certainty.
The moment he finished speaking, another deafening explosion tore through the air. The earth shook as repeated roars echoed across the sky. The transparent protective shield shimmered, revealing fine cracks that resembled a spiderweb. A sharp, avian screech pierced the air, and the sky suddenly darkened.
“Spirit beasts! There are so many spirit beasts!”
“Do not panic! We have the protective array. As long as His Majesty is here, Fengdu will never fall!”
The crowd initially spiraled into chaos, but they quickly regained their composure. They trusted their King implicitly. This was not the first time such an event had occurred, and every time, they had been saved by Wen Muli and his cultivators.
A flock of massive, terrifying flying beasts emerged in the sky, attacking the defensive barrier with reckless abandon. Fengdu was vast, and the breach was far from the city center, but with the sky occupied by these beasts, the outskirts were clearly in peril. It would not be long before the barrier shattered completely. With Wen Muli away, the only one who could take command was the former General and current Empress, Su Mo.
“Pass the order: soldiers are to escort the civilians to the safety bunkers, and all cultivators are to prepare for battle!” After issuing his commands, he conjured his own personal weapon. It was a massive black sword; its cold blade pulsed with dark red killing intent, a testament to the countless lives it had claimed.
“Take Consort Xian and leave!” Su Mo turned back, his voice hoarse as he instructed the guards.
“No! Brother Su, come with me! You have lost your spiritual roots; you will die if you stay!” Yan Yichen shook his head, his eyes filled with panic and unease.
Su Mo gave a radiant smile. “Be obedient and go. I promised Ah Li that I would protect him and his people for a lifetime. I cannot leave!”
With that, he soared into the sky. The prepared cultivators followed him into the fray.
“Madman, that man is not worth your life!” Yan Yichen cursed under his breath. Ignoring the guards, he flew up to join the battle. He could disregard the lives of everyone else, but he could not abandon Su Mo. After all, it was Su Mo who had given him his second life.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
The repeated impacts hammered against everyone’s hearts. With a final, sharp crack, the array shattered completely. The black swarm of beasts roared and lunged toward the people.
From the moment Su Mo gave the order to the moment the array broke, only three minutes had passed. No matter how fast the soldiers moved, they could not evacuate the civilians in time. The city was filled with cultivators, but the majority were ordinary citizens without spiritual power. Everyone’s face was filled with terror as they watched the beasts descending upon them, closing their eyes in despair.
However, the bloodbath they imagined did not occur. Countless cultivators surged forward, and array masters scattered among the crowd, quickly establishing defensive formations. In the sky, the remaining cultivators engaged the beasts in fierce combat.
“Who is that?” Someone widened their eyes, pointing at the most striking man in the crowd, their expression one of disbelief.
“It is General Su Mo! He is not dead; he has come to save us!”
“Long live the General!”
“It is the God of War; the God of War has returned!”
Su Mo’s white robes were stained with blood, his face set in a mask of murderous resolve. He swung his giant sword, cutting down the attacking beasts. Within a short time, his spiritual energy was exhausted, and sharp pain shot through his dantian. He swallowed the taste of blood in his mouth, expressionless as he pulled out bottle after bottle of pills, downing them as if they were worthless pebbles.
“Your Highness, leave it to us! Your body cannot withstand this; please, retreat!” Song Zhi appeared beside him, helping to fend off the beasts while urging him to leave.
“Why are you here? Is everything alright with Ah Li?” Su Mo asked, frowning.
“His Majesty is also under attack and cannot break free. He will return as quickly as possible! He ordered this subordinate to return first and ensure the safety of you and Consort Xian!” Song Zhi replied quickly.
Su Mo said nothing more, but he did not retreat. He knew all too well that Wen Muli would not be coming back. The true danger was not these spirit beasts, but the force following them: the Shuiyun Sect.
