- After the Sickly Child Differentiates into A
- Chapter 51 - So Comfortable It Evoked a Sigh of Relief
Wen Jingzhi was wheeled to a hospital room for an IV drip, while Lin Li was taken to the operating room.
In the dead of night, both the older and younger sisters were unconscious. Wen Xihe checked on Wen Jingzhi before rushing to wait outside the operating room.
Her nerves were stretched to the breaking point. She hadn’t changed her clothes, had barely eaten, and looked utterly exhausted, her lips pale.
Inside the operating room, the atmosphere was tense and busy.
“Report the condition of the glands and the body.”
“The glands are in a closed state, no pheromones detected!”
“Internal bleeding has been stopped.”
“The accumulated pheromone fluid has decreased by five percent!”
Su Yue let out a sigh of relief this was the only piece of good news.
Differentiating into an Alpha was truly the worst-case scenario.
Alpha pheromones are mutually repulsive. The pheromones produced in Lin Li’s body couldn’t break down the “foreign” pheromone fluid; instead, they clashed with it, causing even more severe pain and rejection.
Over time, the long-accumulated pheromone fluid had already eroded her body, while her own naturally produced pheromones were suppressed.
As days passed, the pheromones she produced continued to increase but couldn’t be expelled, accumulating inside her body and clashing with the foreign pheromone fluid. Her body was still on the verge of collapse.
The only silver lining was that Wen Jingzhi had provided a large amount of pheromones this time, dissolving a small portion of the stubborn pheromone fluid and buying some time for both the medical team and Lin Li.
The extraction device in the isolation room had stored some of Wen Jingzhi’s pheromones that Lin Li hadn’t absorbed.
These pheromones needed to be utilized processed into a soothing agent that might help Lin Li survive her first estrus cycle.
But it would only work for the first time.
By 5 a.m., the surgery was over, and Su Yue let out a long, weary sigh.
The most difficult night had passed.
As the operating room doors opened, Wen Xihe stood up but swayed unsteadily. Su Yue sighed with mixed emotions. “Her condition is temporarily stable.”
As if all the strength had drained from her body, Wen Xihe leaned against the wall, her vision blurring as she took a deep breath. “Thank you, Dr. Su.”
Su Yue walked over to support her. “You need to rest, Second Miss Wen.”
“Thank you…” Wen Xihe couldn’t hold on any longer and fainted.
Another wave of chaos ensued. Standing outside the hospital room, Su Yue looked at the two sisters lying in their beds with a complicated expression.
This hospital might as well be renamed the Wen Family Hospital.
After tidying up and changing into isolation gear, Su Yue entered the ICU observation room. After checking the data, she retrieved the prosthetic eye that had been removed when Lin Li was brought into isolation and reinserted it into the empty right socket.
By the time Lin Li’s condition was completely stable, it was already 2 p.m.
Wen Xihe had woken up at noon, gone home to shower and change, eaten a meal, and returned to the hospital with her laptop and a change of clothes for Wen Jingzhi, keeping watch by the bedside.
Half an hour later, Lin Li was moved out of the ICU and transferred to the same double room as Wen Jingzhi.
Su Yue checked on Wen Jingzhi’s condition she had released an excessive amount of pheromones and would remain unconscious for another hour or two after the IV drip.
Turning to Lin Li, Su Yue noted that the internal bleeding had stopped, special medication had been administered, and her vital signs were stable. Aside from the still-severe issues with her glands and pheromones, everything else was under control. Su Yue glanced at Wen Xihe, who still looked pale and weak, and raised an eyebrow in amusement.
Ironically, the one in the most critical condition appeared “healthier” than her two older sisters.
“Have you informed Old Master Wen and your eldest brother?” Su Yue put down the notebook, slipped her hands into her pockets, and walked over to Wen Xihe with a light chuckle. “Once everyone is here, you can sign the confidentiality agreement.”
Wen Xihe continued typing without looking up. “The agreement is about keeping Lin Li’s differentiation results confidential.”
It wasn’t the one she had wanted.
“Smart.” Su Yue waved her hand dismissively. “Let me know when they arrive. It’s my turn to rest now.”
She hadn’t slept a wink in nearly twenty-four hours.
As the ward door closed, Wen Xihe paused her movements, pinched the bridge of her nose wearily, and sighed.
A familiar ringtone broke the silence. Her gaze shifted to the pale-faced woman lying on the hospital bed. Setting aside her laptop, she walked over and picked up the phone from the bedside table.
Shen Yuan.
Wen Xihe raised an eyebrow but didn’t answer. After more than a dozen rings, the call ended, and the screen displayed the missed call log. From 11 a.m. domestic time until now, Shen Yuan had been calling Wen Jingzhi consistently every hour.
Scrolling down, she saw her own eleven missed calls, and below those Lin Li’s.
There were only two, placed nearly an hour earlier than the ones Lin Li had made to her.
Wen Xihe expressionlessly locked the screen, placed the phone back, and turned her attention to the unconscious woman beside her. After a long moment, she let out a soft sigh.
No wonder she had been releasing pheromones so recklessly.
Though she wanted to say, “It’s not your fault you didn’t answer,” if it were her in that situation, she wouldn’t be able to stay calm either.
If she hadn’t managed to answer Xiao You’s call last night… even the thought of that hypothetical scenario was unbearable.
But, that ungrateful little brat!
Wen Xihe glanced at the young girl lying in the bed to the left, gritting her teeth silently.
She called Wen Jingzhi twice first, and only when he didn’t pick up did she think of me?!
Instead of reaching out to someone closer domestically, she went straight for someone abroad?
Meanwhile, Su Yue had originally intended to catch a quick nap, but as soon as she returned to the break room, her old professor called. He asked about the situation and the follow-up plan. Su Yue explained Lin Li’s current condition, but as for the next steps…
She actually had an idea but didn’t dare voice it.
After hanging up, she buried her face in her hands and exhaled deeply.
She had a solution, one with a high success rate and far more convenient than developing a new drug: let Wen Jingzhi act as Lin Li’s “medicine.”
But broaching the subject was difficult.
Given Lin Li’s condition, it was impossible for her to consciously expel pheromone fluid during her estrus cycle. Forget pheromone fluid she didn’t even have pheromones to begin with.
For Alphas who don’t use suppressants during their estrus cycle, there are two ways to release pheromones: one is by activating the marking fangs, releasing pheromones through marking behavior. The secondary glands of female and male Alphas are fundamentally different, so the second method also differs. For female Alphas, under the influence of “pleasure” and “desire,” pheromones accumulate, condense into fluid, gather in the secondary glands, and are then released.
Therefore, for a female Alpha to impregnate an Omega, she must use both methods simultaneously injecting high concentrations of pheromones and pheromone fluid into the Omega’s body.
To resolve the buildup of pheromone fluid in Lin Li’s body, getting her to actively mark an Omega would be extremely difficult. First, the kid herself would never agree to it. Second, her pheromones aren’t releasing, so her marking fangs can’t activate, making marking behavior impossible.
There’s only one viable treatment option for Lin Li repeated marking by an Omega with an extremely high compatibility rate.
The effects of an Omega marking an Alpha are short-lived, requiring repeated markings until the pheromone fluids are suppressed and the Alpha’s pheromones are “liberated.”
How to determine whether suppression has been achieved? By checking if the marking fangs are activated.
Although the pheromones alone are insufficient to complete the marking process, only after suppression can Lin Li accumulate those pheromone fluids, which can then be released and expelled from the body through the second gland.
Following this procedure, it would take at most ten estrus cycles to completely expel the “foreign” pheromone fluids from Lin Li’s body. If the compatibility between Wen Jingzhi’s pheromones and hers truly exceeded 90%, the process could be even faster.
This was the best solution Su Yue could think of.
But it was also an unattainable one.
The idea of having Wen Jingzhi mark Lin Li sounded utterly fantastical.
Not to mention the age gap between them, Lin Li had practically been raised by Wen Jingzhi. This matter… she simply couldn’t bring herself to bring it up.
Yet the solution was truly perfect.
Su Yue rested her chin on her hand and let out an especially heavy sigh.
She honestly didn’t see anything wrong with it, as the two weren’t related by blood. Perhaps it was also because those in the medical and biological fields had fewer inhibitions about such matters.
Even if she didn’t find it difficult, the “unattainable flower” might feel differently.
Moreover, Lin Li, that stubborn kid, would most likely refuse. No, even if Wen Jingzhi agreed, she wouldn’t consent.
The more Su Yue thought about it, the more frustrated she became. She rubbed her face, collapsed onto the bed, pulled the covers over her head, and decided to sleep!
She slept for two hours not long, but enough for Su Yue. After washing her face, she was fully awake, and a sudden inspiration struck her. She slapped her forehead and hurried out the door.
This method could work!
It didn’t necessarily have to be Wen Jingzhi!
The Wen family had extensive connections, and there were many Omegas in research institutes and military units. Over the years, they had identified many types of pheromone fluids in Lin Li’s body through blood screenings. By gathering more Omegas and extracting a bit of their pheromones for comparison, surely, they could find one with sufficient compatibility!
Moreover, this treatment method didn’t require 80% compatibility, 50% or above would suffice, meaning there would be more suitable candidates.
Once they arranged for Lin Li to meet them one by one, surely one of them would click with her, right?
With an emotional foundation established, the treatment could proceed, and neither party would likely resist.
The more Su Yue thought about it, the more feasible it seemed. She rushed back to the duty room, gathered her team, and held a brief meeting.
After the meeting, Su Yue went to check on the patients. Lin Li was already awake, seemed to be in good spirits, and was chatting with Wen Xihe.
“How are you feeling?” Su Yue approached and casually flipped through a few pages of monitoring data.
The girl who had differentiated into an Alpha showed no noticeable changes, she hadn’t grown stronger and remained frail and pale. She smiled softly and said, “I’m doing well, thank you, Dr. Su.”
“You’re welcome.”
Su Yue then went to check on Wen Jingzhi. Aside from being extremely weak due to pheromone depletion, there were no major issues. The fact that she hadn’t woken up yet was likely due to exhaustion.
“How is my sister doing?” Lin Li’s expression carried a hint of guilt as she looked at Wen Jingzhi. “Why hasn’t she woken up yet?”
Su Yue’s eyes shifted, and she pursed her lips. “She’s fine, don’t worry.” She exchanged a glance with Wen Xihe and left the room.
“I’ll step out for a moment. Xiao You, don’t move around, okay?” Wen Xihe stood up and left, closing the door behind her.
The room fell silent.
A few minutes after promising Xīhé not to move recklessly, the girl slipped quietly out of bed and approached Wen Jingzhi’s bedside. Her gaze fell upon the woman’s pale lips, flickered away, then returned almost instantly this time settling on the other’s face.
She had never seen her sister look so fragile.
And it was all because of her.
During her differentiation, she had barely been conscious, only remembering the scorching heat and pain that threatened to consume everything and snow. Gentle, cool snow that enveloped her amid the burning.
She knew it was her sister.
She also remembered calling her sister, but she hadn’t answered.
She didn’t blame her sister; instead, she felt she was at fault.
She shouldn’t keep relying on her sister anymore. Her sister had already saved her countless times, she couldn’t cause her more trouble.
Her sister had her own life.
Lin Li pulled over a nearby stool and sat down. Her gaze drifted over the distant-mountain-like brows, the tightly shut eyes, then slid down the high bridge of the nose before stopping, refusing to travel further.
There was an unconscious tenderness and lingering attachment in her gaze that even she hadn’t noticed.
The scent of snow still lingered within her like standing atop a snowy peak, like being buried in a snowdrift, or more accurately like being held in her sister’s embrace.
It brought her no discomfort whatsoever. Instead, it felt so comforting she nearly let out a sigh of contentment.
