- Chapter 46 - She’d Rather Let the “Box” Explode
【Even if the heavens slap me, I’d still say these eyes are truly worthy of being sisters!】
【Silver-rimmed glasses, a gaze that looks at you like trash this is my long-lost wife!!!】
【Ahhhhhhh, is this what they call the “raising” genre? Raising a wife, huh?】
【After all these years apart, the little sister has grown into the image of my wife.】
【If I can’t marry Zhizhi, can’t I marry her sister instead!?】
【@Wen Jingzhi V Goddess, can I be your sister’s wife?】
【@Wen Jingzhi V Goddess, can I be your sister’s wife?】
Wen Jingzhi stared at the flood of comments clamoring to become her sister’s wife, her eyes darkening as she let out a cold snort.
“Ms. Wen?”
“Ignore it.”
“Okay.” The assistant hung up the call.
Wen Jingzhi tapped on her phone.
【Wen Jingzhi V: No.】
Within less than a minute after the post went live on Hongbo, thousands of comments flooded in below.
【Ahhh, a living wife!】
【Wife, your possessiveness is too strong really, not even a chance?】
【Can your sister really not marry me? Even though I’m an Omega, I’ll make her happy.】
【Can your sister really not marry me? Even though I’m a Beta, I’ll make her happy.】
【Can your sister really not marry me? Even though I’m an Alpha with a monthly salary of three thousand, I’ll make her happy.】
【I’m willing to wait for your sister to marry me too!】
Wen Jingzhi raised an eyebrow, exited Hongbo, and paid no further attention.
Early the next morning, Wen Jingzhi drove Lin Li to school. By the time she returned home, Aunt Li had already come back. After exchanging greetings, Aunt Li took Xiao Xi for a walk downstairs.
Wen Jingzhi went back to her room to pack a few things, preparing to go out in the afternoon.
Meanwhile, at Beijing No. 1 High School, Class 1 of Grade 10.
Lin Li had just settled into her seat when Sun Xiaoxiao arrived. They were still desk mates.
Sun Xiaoxiao was an avid internet surfer. As soon as she arrived, she started talking to Lin Li about the trending searches. Lin Li took out her phone to check the topic had already dropped off the list, so she didn’t pay it much mind.
During the break after the second class, Su Ke came looking for her. Standing at the classroom door, she asked a girl in the back row to call Lin Li. That girl was also an Alpha. Understanding Su Ke’s intentions, she pursed her lips and muttered, “Another rival in love.”
“Lin Li, someone’s here for you.”
As soon as the words were spoken, the classroom fell into an eerie silence for a few seconds. Several people glanced toward Su Ke at the door.
Lin Li set down her pen and stood up. After she left the classroom, soft murmurs broke out inside.
“Who is that?”
“The class monitor from Class 3, Su Ke.”
“Oh, her. I’ve heard she’s really popular and a nice person.”
“Don’t worry, our class belle isn’t that easy to chase. There’s still a chance.”
“Did you see the trending searches?”
“Yeah, but almost everyone in our class knows about it, right?”
“Right. On the first day of school, it was Goddess Zhizhi who brought our class belle to the classroom.”
“Damn, I arrived late and missed it!”
The chatter wasn’t exactly quiet. Sun Xiaoxiao, resting her chin in her hands, overheard everything and couldn’t help covering her mouth to stifle a laugh.
Lin Li is so popular.
The class bell rang just as Lin Li returned to her seat. As soon as she sat down, Sun Xiaoxiao leaned in and whispered, “What did she say?”
“She asked me about the trending searches.” It seems she really is my sister’s fan.
“Oh!” Disappointment, I thought it was a confession: “Su Ke seems to really adore Sister Zhizhi. I heard she’s collected a lot of out-of-print magazines. So envious.”
“So she asked you for Sister Zhizhi’s autograph too?”
After the class found out that Lin Li’s sister was Wen Jingzhi, for the first month of school, people would deliberately linger around Lin Li almost every day, bringing her snacks and cakes, all hoping to get Wen Jingzhi’s autograph.
But Lin Li never agreed. She felt it would trouble her sister too much.
Besides, they were just classmates, it wasn’t necessary.
“No.” She only expressed admiration for her sister, “But she invited me to go claw machine gaming this weekend.”
“Ah, did you agree?”
“No.”
Sun Xiaoxiao had already guessed. The teacher walked in, and she smiled, not asking further.
The slightly hectic Monday classes came to an end, and school was over.
Lin Li had to go for a check-up and didn’t wait for Sun Xiaoxiao. She directly got into the family-arranged car and headed to Military District One Hospital.
Upon arrival, the driver opened the door for Lin Li. The doors of the car behind opened as well, and two tall, robust male Alpha bodyguards stepped out, following closely behind her as she entered the elevator.
Since starting high school, she had been coming for check-ups or new medication injections on her own.
This wasn’t her own request but rather a requirement from Su Yue. The new medication they were using was still in the confidential stage, so Grandpa Wen and Wen Xize weren’t suitable to accompany her. Besides, she had grown up, and bringing bodyguards for a check-up was manageable on her own.
Lin Li stepped out of the elevator, and Su Yue was already waiting. She followed her into the examination room, while the two bodyguards stood guard on either side of the door like sentinels.
After completing the series of tests, Su Yue flipped through the report, her expression growing increasingly grim. Her gaze fell on the young girl by the hospital bed, who was quietly fastening her watch, and she hesitantly asked, “Lately, has your sense of smell become even more sensitive?”
Lin Li buckled the watch strap and nodded faintly, “Yes, I can smell pheromones even from a slight distance.”
She could even catch her sister’s pheromones from farther away.
Under normal circumstances, the suppressant patches used by Alphas and Omegas could block nearly 90% of pheromones. Unless emotions were highly volatile or self-control was poor, it was difficult to detect pheromones even up close.
Being able to smell someone’s pheromones through suppressant patches indicated an abnormal level of olfactory sensitivity.
Su Yue frowned deeply, “Is Wen Jingzhi’s pheromone still effective for you?”
Lin Li lifted her eyelids and stared at her without a word.
“I’m not asking you to test it with her,” Su Yue said helplessly, “You’re so protective.”
Who’s the older sister here, anyway?
“Yes.” As long as she was near her sister and could smell her scent, the pain in her body would ease slightly, “But the effect is diminishing.”
“That’s to be expected.” How much use could such a small amount provide?
This was becoming tricky.
Five years ago, they had used blockers to forcibly halt Lin Li’s differentiation. But given her physical condition, not differentiating would only worsen her state. They had worked tirelessly, relying on data from Lin Li and the deceased child’s body and medication records, to develop a targeted high-potency inhibitor to suppress the pheromones in Lin Li’s body. However, its effectiveness was diminishing day by day.
By now, they were already on the third version of the high-potency inhibitor. It had been “tested” on Lin Li early last year, and in just over a year, its effectiveness had weakened to the point where it could barely last a week.
Continuing to use inhibitors was becoming pointless.
Lin Li’s body had reached the brink of eruption.
Recalling the test data from the beginning of the year, Su Yue rubbed her temple with a grim expression. “I need to explain the current situation to you.”
Lin Li glanced at the time and sat on the hospital bed. “Mm.”
“Your body has reached its limit.”
“The reagents and hormone fluids injected into you that can’t be metabolized are continuously eroding your cells.”
“They’re affecting, even altering and destroying your immune system.”
Lin Li frowned, tilting her head in confusion.
Su Yue suddenly realized something and covered her face. “Sorry, I forgot.”
She thought for a moment. “Let me put it this way your body is like a box full of items. The injected reagents are destroying the original contents while continuously occupying the space inside.”
“As time passes, they invade and expand.”
“The inhibitors we’ve been giving you can only temporarily suppress the activity of these ‘invaders’ and slow down their invasion.”
“But now they’re almost ineffective. If you need weekly injections, it would be better to stop the medication entirely.”
“You can’t metabolize those substances through glands. The medication we inject was originally designed to suppress hormones and shares similarities with the ‘structure’ of those ‘invaders.'”
“Too many injections will backfire.”
“But if we stop…” Su Yue took a deep breath and said seriously, “Your body was already at the breaking point five years ago.”
“Now we’re forcibly suppressing it with medication. If we stop, we can’t guarantee your safety.”
“So, I recommend you stay at the research institute until your differentiation.”
“No.” Lin Li smiled, her eyes curving. “I’m very grateful to you all.”
She should have five years ago anyway.
Su Yue sighed, covering her eyes, and rubbed her reddened corners. “I knew you’d say that.”
“But I still need to explain everything clearly. You can make your decision after hearing me out.”
“If Wen Jingzhi’s hormones can truly alleviate your pain,” Su Yue continued under the girl’s icy gaze, “it proves that her hormones match at least one of the hormone fluids in your body by over ninety-five percent.”
“Possibly even more than one.”
“Over the past five years, we’ve tried injecting you with weakened hormones from other Omegas, but as you know, it had no effect.”
“Since you haven’t differentiated and lack glands, it’s like that box has no opening. We can’t repair the original contents inside, nor can we expel those ‘invaders.'”
“Once we stop the medication, the damage will spread rapidly until the box can no longer withstand it and ultimately bursts open.”
“We have no idea when it might happen.”
It was like a blade hanging over Lin Li’s head, no one knew when it would fall. The only certainty was that the blade was always there.
And it was getting closer to Lin Li’s neck.
That left eye had completely transformed into a pitch-black abyss. Su Yue met its gaze fearlessly and voiced what she had held back for so long.
“If her hormones can combine with the hormone fluids in your body, they can dissolve them.”
“This is why we hope you’ll differentiate into an Omega. Once you have glands and can produce Omega hormones naturally, you’ll slowly dissolve those Alpha hormone fluids.”
“Your condition would gradually improve.”
“When it’s fully dissolved, we can begin repairing your damaged body.”
“If conditions are even better, you might even have a chance to return to normal.”
Su Yue set down the report and walked over to the cold-faced girl, lowering his gaze: “You could be free from the constant pain, able to run again using your own strength.”
“We only need her to provide pheromone fluid. Though there will be some pain, we can guarantee her safety.”
“What exactly are you refusing?”
Lin Li closed her eyes briefly, speaking coldly: “She is my sister, and that’s all she will ever be.”
Not a “test subject,” nor a forced “medicine” attached to her.
That icy room, the devouring machines she didn’t want to recall it for even a second.
Nor did she want her sister to go through such things.
Just the thought of that snow-like person lying on a hospital bed because of her, surrounded by experimental equipment, extracting some damned pheromone fluid every cell in her body ached intensely.
If it meant putting her sister through that, she’d rather let the “box” explode outright.
