- Chapter 33 - The Blade’s Glint Reflected in Those Dark Eyes
“Professor Wen?” After waiting for a while without any movement from Wen Jingzhi, Wen Xihe sensed something was wrong. Before she could speak, the host, worried about a live broadcast mishap, jokingly urged, “Professor Wen, did you not expect to win the award? You seem a bit nervous.”
“Please! Huh!?”
The person being urged only took the phone from her assistant’s hand, glanced briefly at the stage, and then, with a cold expression, left the venue without hesitation.
The entire audience erupted in murmurs. Confused and scrutinizing gazes fell upon that tall, retreating figure, and low whispers filled the air. The director immediately cut the camera angle, leaving only the stage visible on the live broadcast.
Just as the host was about to say something to smooth things over, the CEO surnamed Wen beside her suddenly tossed her cue cards and hurried off the stage, looking flustered.
The live broadcast mishap was now impossible to conceal.
“Jingzhi!” Wen Xihe quickly caught up to Wen Jingzhi. “What’s going on?”
“Lin Li might be in trouble.” Wen Jingzhi clenched her phone tightly. Her high heels suddenly caught on the hem of her dress, and she stopped, gripping the side of the skirt. With a sharp tug, she tore off the luxurious hem and casually discarded it on the dusty ground.
Wen Xihe glanced at it but paid no mind, pressing further, “How do you know something happened to her?”
Explain clearly, you ice block!
“The watch I bought for her is broken.” Wen Jingzhi’s pale, long legs were now exposed as she strode forward purposefully in her high heels. “That kid wouldn’t carelessly break it.”
Arriving at the elevator leading to the parking garage, Wen Jingzhi’s face was cold and stern. “Go check the lounge. I’m heading to the garage.”
Wen Xihe gritted her teeth, knowing it wasn’t the right time to press for details, and turned toward the lounge. Wen Jingzhi took the elevator down to the garage and followed the coordinates to the exit, where she found the shattered watch on the ground.
She stared at the “remains,” took a shallow breath, and closed her eyes. A chilling aura erupted from her, her pheromones seeming to materialize into snowflakes that drifted within a three-meter radius around her.
Her assistant, who had rushed over with the car keys and coat, nearly shivered from the cold.
It’s even colder than this winter day.
If even she, a Beta who couldn’t detect pheromones, felt this way, what would it be like if there were an Alpha nearby.
The assistant wanted to remind her but, noticing Wen Jingzhi’s expression, kept her mouth shut and handed over the car keys and coat.
Survival comes first.
Wen Jingzhi put on the coat, took the keys, and walked to the car the bodyguard had brought over. Unlocking, opening the door, and starting the engine, she did it all in one fluid motion.
“Don’t speed,”
“Woof!”
A small gray-and-white dog, Xiao Xi, came running out from the fire exit.
But something seemed off, it was stumbling as it ran.
Wen Jingzhi spotted Xiao Xi, turned the steering wheel, and drove over, opening the passenger door. “Xiao Xi, get in.”
Xiao Xi panted and tried to jump in, but it took two attempts to succeed. Wen Jingzhi’s eyes darkened as she leaned over to close the door and checked the time.
Only seven or eight minutes had passed since the watch was broken. If they had left the garage, the road outside was a straight path with no forks. With reporters and fans still crowding the area, they couldn’t have gone far.
How could she catch up and intercept them?
The back road connected directly to the intersection that was the only way out from that straight path!
Wen Jingzhi immediately stepped on the accelerator, the car drifting as it swerved toward another exit of the garage.
The assistant assistant waved away the dust in front of her and let out a long sigh.
Unmanageable, absolutely unmanageable!
The car window was open, and Xiao Xi lay weakly on the window frame, panting with her tongue out. Suddenly, her nose twitched, and she barked once in the direction of the damaged watch.
Wen Jingzhi glanced over and murmured softly, “I know, we’re not going that way.”
After saying this, she frowned. Why was she talking to a little dog? As if it could actually understand her?
But Xiao Xi really stopped barking.
Her phone rang. Seeing it was Wen Xihe, she put on her Bluetooth earpiece and answered the call.
“Xiao You is indeed missing. Surveillance footage captured Chen Qing she came to the lounge area with a staff member.”
“The hallway surveillance outside my lounge is all broken, and the bodyguard is still unconscious.”
“He was likely hit with a tranquilizer gun. It’s a homemade one, different from the military-grade kind, and the effects are weaker.”
“I checked the garage surveillance. During the ceremony, only one black SUV left the garage. The license plate number.”
“That person must still have the tranquilizer gun with them. Be careful.”
“I’ve already reported it to the police. Let’s stay in touch if anything comes up.”
“Mm.” Wen Jingzhi’s cold eyes darkened. She hung up the phone, kicked off her high heels, and stepped on the accelerator again.
A black SUV sped down the empty one-way street, its ordinary appearance belied by the racing-car-like intensity with which she drove it.
This area wasn’t in the city center. Aside from the crowd and vehicles near the ceremony venue, the roads ahead and behind were relatively empty.
Wen Jingzhi stared straight ahead, flooring the accelerator. The car roared, its speed so fast it seemed to leave afterimages.
Ten minutes later, a crossroads appeared ahead. In the next second, a black SUV emerged in the opposite lane, far in the distance.
Even though the license plate was too far away to read, Wen Jingzhi had a gut feeling it was the one!
Without slowing down at all, she sped through the intersection and headed straight for the SUV.
Inside the SUV were the men in black. The driver quickly noticed the black car speeding toward them from the opposite lane at the intersection. At first, he paid it no mind, but then the car suddenly accelerated, heading directly for them!
Frowning, he gritted his teeth and stepped on the accelerator as well whoever it was, he refused to believe this person wasn’t afraid to die!
The two cars raced toward each other on the empty road at breakneck speeds, leaving afterimages in their wake. The distance between them narrowed rapidly, yet neither vehicle slowed down or swerved.
Wen Jingzhi’s face remained cold and expressionless as she watched the approaching SUV. Her eyes, deep and dark like the ocean floor, betrayed a hint of somber madness.
The car groaned under the strain, roaring as if pushed to its limits.
Just as the two vehicles were about to collide, the SUV’s window suddenly rolled down.
“Sis!! Don’t!”
Wen Jingzhi’s pupils contracted sharply.
“Screech!”
The black SUV swerved sharply to the right, brushing past the SUV and knocking off its side mirror. Wen Jingzhi cast a cold glance inside and locked eyes with Chen Qing, who was covering Lin Li’s mouth in the back seat. Her gaze then softened as it fell upon the child’s tearful face, and she gave her a reassuring look.
As the two vehicles passed each other, the window rolled up completely. Lin Li’s mind replayed the fleeting image of Wen Jingzhi’s face outside the window. Her eyes widened, and her heart began to beat like a drum once more.
It really was Sis..
She had only vaguely felt the car was familiar and instinctively thought Sis had come to save her, but she never expected, it really was Sis!
Sis! Sis!
Suddenly, Lin Li no longer wanted to die quietly out there.
She still wanted to stay by Sis’s side, even if it was just for one more minute.
Wen Jingzhi calmly stepped on the brake, gripping the steering wheel as the car came to a halt just before crashing into the guardrail. Without hesitation, she reversed, executed a sharp drift to turn the car around, and sped off in pursuit.
With Wen Jingzhi’s reckless driving, the SUV quickly caught up to the off-road vehicle, pulling up alongside it. Her face cold, she suddenly swerved, ramming the front of her car into the rear of the off-road vehicle before scraping along its side in an attempt to force it to stop.
The man in black was equally fearless, turning his wheel to collide head-on with Wen Jingzhi. Concerned about Lin Li inside the vehicle, Wen Jingzhi didn’t press further. Instead, she accelerated again, trying to overtake the off-road vehicle and block its path, but she could only manage to stay parallel to it.
Just then, Xiao Xi, who had been weak and listless, suddenly let out a bark. He leaped out of the car window and landed on the roof of the off-road vehicle. His hind legs, still lacking strength, slipped slightly.
Wen Jingzhi pressed her lips together tightly but did not call Xiao Xi back.
Xiao Xi crouched on the roof, barking frantically, then shakily attempted to stand.
Inside the off-road vehicle, Lin Li heard Xiao Xi’s barks and grew anxious. She threw herself against the door, trying to open it and jump out, but Chen Qing grabbed her tightly. “Damn it, stay put!!”
Lin Li suddenly clenched her fist and struck Chen Qing in the eye. With a sharp cry, Chen Qing released her grip. Lin Li immediately lunged for the door, only to find it locked. Chen Qing, recovering from the pain, covered her right eye and yanked Lin Li back, pinning her against the seat before trying to choke her.
The man driving was focused on shaking off Wen Jingzhi and didn’t notice the commotion in the back.
Lin Li struggled to breathe but still fixed Chen Qing with a gaze full of contempt, as if the woman were nothing but trash. Enraged, Chen Qing released her injured eye and used both hands to tighten her grip around Lin Li’s neck.
Instead of resisting, Lin Li leaned forward and sank her teeth into Chen Qing’s ear, putting all her strength into the bite.
“Ah!!!”
Chen Qing immediately let go, screaming in agony. She grabbed Lin Li, trying to pull her off, and struck her neck repeatedly to force her to release her bite. Lin Li coughed up a mouthful of blood from the blows but refused to let go, her expression fierce and determined, as if she intended to bite the ear clean off.
“Damn it! You little beast!!” Chen Qing yanked Lin Li’s hair backward, pulling her away. After being struck multiple times and biting for so long, Lin Li had no strength left to resist.
Her lips stained with blood, Lin Li tilted her head and spat out a mouthful of bloody saliva, then grinned. “Idiot.” She couldn’t even overpower a child.
“I’m going to kill you!!” Chen Qing was hysterical with rage.
Her ear throbbed with a tearing pain, blood seeping through the fingers she held against it, staining half of her twisted face crimson. She glared at Lin Li, her eyes burning with fury.
The man heard the commotion and warned her, “I told you not to touch her!”
What was so special about this little brat that she couldn’t be harmed? This restriction, that prohibition she had never endured such humiliation before! She’d had enough!!!
Chen Qing turned and met a pair of dark, deep, icy eyes filled with nothing but disdain for her.
They were exactly like Wen Jingzhi’s eyes.
The humiliation washed over her once again, fueling her rage.
How dare she! How dare this little beast!!!
A medium-sized gray-and-white dog suddenly leaped onto the hood of the car, barking furiously at the people inside and scratching at the window.
The dog’s sizable body blocked the man’s view. Gritting his teeth, he ignored the situation in the back and swerved the steering wheel, trying to shake the dog off. A glance in the rearview mirror confirmed that the black car was still hot on his tail. He cursed under his breath.
Damn it! This woman is insane!
Chen Qing stared into those eyes, his anger reaching its peak. Suddenly, he let out a cold laugh. Stabilizing himself as the car drifted, he leaned close to the driver’s seat and reached toward the black-clad man’s thigh where a dagger was strapped.
Before the man could react, Chen Qing swiftly drew the dagger. The man’s gaze flickered, instantly alert. “What are you doing? Put it back!”
“I told you not to touch her!”
The sharp blade, cold and menacing, was pointed directly at Lin Li. Yet, the latter didn’t even blink, his gaze still deep and unflinching, showing no trace of fear.
The thread of reason had been completely severed by rage.
It was these eyes!
That disgusting look!!
The blade swept toward those dark eyes.
Blood splattered onto the man’s right ear, filling the car with the metallic scent of blood. The man’s eyes widened abruptly as he glanced into the rearview mirror, catching only a glimpse of Chen Qing’s blood-streaked face twisted into a vicious grin.
“You!”
The sharp tip of the dagger pierced the right eyeball. Blood-stained, slender fingers tightened around the hand gripping the knife, resisting. The blade pressed in a little deeper, and Lin Li couldn’t hold back a muffled groan, shuddering slightly.
Chen Qing grinned, satisfied.
