After the Sickly Beauty Was Haunted by an Evil God - Chapter 6
Chapter 6
“Hey! You two students over there!” A loud, booming voice rang out from a distance. “You’re not allowed in here! If you want to hug, go do it somewhere else!”
Lin Yu snapped back to reality instantly, jerking his head up so fast that the momentum sent him toppling backward.
“Careful!” He Chen was quick as a flash, grabbing him and pulling him back into his embrace.
The waist in his grip was incredibly thin; he could almost encircle it entirely with one hand. Through the thin fabric of the white shirt, he could even feel the flesh beneath.
Snow-white, warm, soft—the kind that would leave a mark with just a slight touch…
A strange light flickered in his dark eyes as He Chen’s hand unconsciously tightened.
His palm temperature clearly wasn’t high—it was even a bit cool—but Lin Yu reacted as if he’d been burned. His waist shuddered, and he instinctively raised his hands to push against the man’s arms.
As the two stood there pulling and pushing at each other, the police officer in uniform looked on speechlessly. He couldn’t help but shout again: “You two students, get back now!”
College students these days, how can they be so oblivious to their surroundings?
“Stand steady first, then I’ll let you go.” He Chen glanced toward the officer and laughed softly. “Hurry up, or the police uncle is going to think we’re suspicious characters and take us back for interrogation.”
Lin Yu: “…”
He struggled to adjust his posture, pushing again against the arms he was leaning on. “You can let go now.”
He Chen complied and released him. “Let’s go. We’ll head back to the dorm first.”
On the way back, the scene from earlier kept replaying in Lin Yu’s mind.
Was Chen Sensen’s death a suicide or a murder? What did it mean for him to show Lin Yu the scene of his fall?
The only certainty was that he wanted Lin Yu to do something for him.
Everyone born with Yin-Yang eyes can see ghosts; similarly, ghosts can sense those who can see them.
For Lin Yu, the Lin family home was the safest protective shield. Aside from “that thing” that acted recklessly in his dreams, no other monsters or ghosts could enter the Lin residence—or rather, they didn’t dare to deliver themselves into a trap.
But he had to attend school normally. Being outside meant inevitably encountering ghosts frequently, though the spiritual tools he carried kept ordinary spirits from getting close.
He had no spiritual power or cultivation. Most of the time, he would simply ignore the ghosts staring at him, only taking action in extremely rare circumstances.
This time, the deceased was his classmate. Although they didn’t have much interaction usually, this was the classmate who, on a late evening during a heavy downpour, had shyly handed Lin Yu his own umbrella and ran back through the rain himself.
Chen Sensen died with a grievance. Whether it was to uncover the truth or to fulfill an unfinished wish, Lin Yu couldn’t bring himself to turn a blind eye.
So, he decided to postpone going home and stay at school for now.
“He Chen.” Thinking of this, Lin Yu asked tentatively, “What time are you going home today?”
He Chen was sitting at his desk looking at his phone. He turned around upon hearing the question. “I’m fine either way. What about you?”
“I don’t plan on going back for the time being,” Lin Yu said with a straight face. “I want to stay at school to study.”
He Chen laughed. “So studious?”
“Mhm.” Lin Yu hummed in response. The next words were a bit difficult to voice.
How should he speak to make He Chen willing to stay and accompany him?
Young Master Lin had spent his life doing as he pleased in the Lin household, pampered to the extreme. Lin Zhengyang would satisfy any request he made without exception, nearly spoiling his only son to the heavens.
Although he had tried hard to change his ways to adapt to collective life outside, he was still very unaccustomed to asking favors of people.
Last night, taking the initiative to ask He Chen to let him sleep in his bed was already his limit. If he had to beg again…
Seeing those straight, white teeth bite into a lower lip and that beautiful face reveal a conflicted expression, He Chen figured it was about time.
“Ah, I just remembered,” He Chen spoke up out of the blue. “We have exams after the National Day break. I haven’t even started memorizing my books yet.”
“Really?” Lin Yu couldn’t help but breathe a sigh of relief. “That’s great.”
He Chen raised an eyebrow at him. “Hmm?”
“I mean,” Lin Yu paused, trying to gloss it over, “you should spend these next few days memorizing well. It’ll be fine.”
“Oh…” He Chen drawled out the tail end of the word, making it unclear whether he believed him or not.
In any case, he wouldn’t be alone. Lin Yu felt relieved and waited patiently.
A newly dead spirit is usually very weak. Even if they turn into a ghost due to grievances, they are temporarily unable to leave the place where they died. Therefore, Chen Sensen would definitely come to find him again.
But for some reason, he waited until midnight, and Chen Sensen’s ghost never appeared.
“Can’t sleep again?” In the darkness, a familiar voice came from the opposite bed.
Lin Yu leaned against his headboard, eyes fixed outside the window. “Mhm, a little.”
“Then…” He Chen patted his bed. “Do you want to come over and sleep together?”
“No need.” Lin Yu rejected him without a second thought. “I’m going to sleep in a moment.”
Last night, he had been caught off guard and badly frightened. Combined with wanting to test if He Chen had a special constitution, he had squeezed into the bed for one night.
But what happened today at the Science and Technology building suggested that He Chen didn’t seem to have anything special about him.
Furthermore, the dorm bed was far too cramped for two people. Even now, his waist still felt a bit uncomfortable…
“Alright. If you get scared, come up. I’ll leave space for you.” He Chen seemed to chuckle, adding, “Provided you don’t kick my nose again.”
“That was just an accident,” Lin Yu countered immediately. “My usual sleeping posture is very normal.”
He had a two-meter bed at home and had never once rolled off.
He Chen gave a noncommittal “Is that so?”
With that, the dorm returned to silence.
Lin Yu let out a silent yawn. He really couldn’t hold out any longer and lay down to sleep.
Chen Sensen probably wasn’t coming tonight. He’d wait until tomorrow.
However, Lin Yu did not sleep soundly that night.
In his dreams, he repeatedly relived the process of Chen Sensen falling from the building. He saw Chen Sensen’s broken body lying on the ground, reaching a hand out toward him, his mouth open as if saying “Save me.”
“…Lin Yu, Lin Yu… wake up.”
A gentle, pleasant voice approached from the distance. Lin Yu struggled to open his eyes. His unfocused pupils reflected a handsome face filled with concern.
“Another nightmare?” He Chen stood by the bed, a cool, large hand covering Lin Yu’s forehead. “It’s okay. You’re awake now.”
Long, crow-feather lashes trembled. Lin Yu tilted his face up slightly and let out a long breath.
The hair on his forehead was wet with sweat, his face was almost devoid of color, and he looked indescribably fragile.
He Chen stared at him intently, asking softly, “What did you dream about? Can you tell me?”
“I dreamed…” Lin Yu turned his face to the side. “I dreamed Chen Sensen was calling for my help.”
He Chen frowned imperceptibly. “Are you close with him?”
“No.” Lin Yu shook his head. “Nodding acquaintances. But Chen Sensen once helped me.”
He had been born getting whatever he wanted, rarely having the chance to receive help from others. Therefore, he remembered every act of kindness he received and would look for a chance to repay it twofold.
After all, they weren’t related; others had no obligation to help him.
“I see.” He Chen sighed. “That’s a real shame…”
Since Chen Sensen wouldn’t come to find him, Lin Yu had to take the initiative.
He took He Chen to the Science and Technology building again, only to be surprised to find that the police tape had been removed. Students were walking into the building as if no accident had ever happened.
Lin Yu frowned slightly. “What’s going on?”
“Maybe the investigation has already reached a conclusion,” He Chen guessed.
Lin Yu immediately opened his WeChat groups. Sure enough, there was a new notification in the muted class group.
He scanned it quickly. The notification stated that the police investigation showed: Chen Sensen previously had depressive tendencies, and the excessive pressure of life lately led to him being unable to see a way out, resulting in his suicide. Additionally, the school had urgently organized psychological counseling sessions, urging students in need to take the initiative to seek help from teachers.
“The case is closed just like that?” Lin Yu’s brows furrowed deeper.
Every year, there are college students who end their lives across various major universities. Young people are already a high-risk group for suicide, and the public seems to have grown accustomed to it.
It was foreseeable that after a period of private gossip among classmates, the matter would soon blow away with the wind, leaving no trace.
“The Science and Technology building has surveillance everywhere. We should trust the police conclusion,” He Chen comforted him warmly. “If he really was depressed, perhaps death was a release for him.”
“It’s not that…” Lin Yu closed his eyes. “It’s not that I don’t trust the police’s professional level, it’s just—”
Even if Chen Sensen really did commit suicide, there must be a hidden story.
But now the ghost was gone, where was he supposed to find clues? Did he have to use the Lin family’s power?
He Chen pondered for a moment. “You think there’s more to it?”
“Yes.” Lin Yu felt a flicker in his heart and looked up at him. “I think this matter is full of suspicious points.”
He Chen didn’t ask what those points were. Instead, he made a suggestion: “How about we start with his roommates and ask around?”
Lin Yu nodded. “That’s the only way for now.”
He first asked Li Yanchen in the dorm group who Chen Sensen’s roommates were, then added them on WeChat from the class group.
Lin Yu was usually very low-profile at school. No one knew what the Lin family actually did; they only knew his family was extremely wealthy, and there were rumors that his father had donated a building to the school.
But Young Master Lin wasn’t one for socializing. At most, he was close to the roommates he lived with. He never participated in class activities, making it impossible for people to suck up to him.
Now that he was taking the initiative to add someone on WeChat, the other person was quite flattered and accepted almost instantly.
Lin Yu: “Hello, are you Chen Sensen’s roommate?”
Zhao Mengyao: “Chen Sensen’s suicide had absolutely nothing to do with me!”
Lin Yu: “I didn’t say it had anything to do with you.”
Lin Yu: “I just wanted to ask you, before Chen Sensen committed suicide, did he have any unusual behavior?”
Zhao Mengyao: “Unusual? That guy was never normal!”
Zhao Mengyao: “Ptooey, ptooey, ptooey! I mean, he didn’t communicate much with us, so I’m not very sure!”
Lin Yu thought for a moment and continued asking: “Then do you know if he had any close friends?”
Zhao Mengyao: “He usually kept to himself, what friends could he have?”
Unable to get any useful information, Lin Yu was getting a bit annoyed. Just as he was about to try a different roommate, the other person sent another message.
Zhao Mengyao: “Oh! I remembered! He seemed to have a secret boyfriend!”
His finger paused slightly over the phone screen. Lin Yu typed quickly: “What was his name?”
Zhao Mengyao: “I’m not sure about that, but he should be from our school. Once I accidentally overheard him on a phone call outside, but he noticed me before I could hear much.”
“There must be clues in the phone,” He Chen reminded him softly from the side. “But the phone was likely taken by the police as evidence.”
Lin Yu tapped his knuckles on the desk. “Then we’ll have to think of another way.”
“What kind of way?” He Chen looked him in the eye, his tone sounding very serious. “Student Lin Yu, you can’t go doing anything illegal or breaking the rules.”
“Oh, I forgot you study Law.” Lin Yu was stunned for a moment, then suddenly felt like laughing. “Don’t worry, I won’t.”
In reality, the fastest method was undoubtedly to use the hands of the Lin family to summon Chen Sensen’s ghost again, but for now, he wanted to solve this himself.
Once the Lin family was involved, things would become very troublesome.
He Chen raised an eyebrow. “Then tell me, what do you plan to do?”
“It doesn’t necessarily have to be the phone; call logs will suffice.” Lin Yu spoke seriously, opening his laptop. “This will be much easier to handle.”
He Chen stood to the side. Seeing his grave and serious expression, the color deep within his pupils seemed to turn even darker.
He secretly ground his back teeth, his gaze falling on the red mole on that snow-white earlobe.
What kind of thing is worth so much of your effort?
