After the Sickly Beauty Was Haunted by an Evil God - Chapter 5
Chapter 5
Having received permission, Lin Yu couldn’t help but heave a sigh of relief.
He reached out to grab the ladder and climbed up with light, agile movements, like an elegant and cautious kitten, making only a few faint “creak” sounds.
The dormitory beds were not large; it was difficult for two boys to lie flat on their backs, so they had to sleep on their sides.
He Chen turned on his side close to the bed rail, making enough space for the startled kitten.
However, in the next second, he found that Lin Yu had naturally lain down in the corner by his legs, curling into a small ball tightly against the wall.
He really only took up a tiny bit of space.
He Chen’s eyebrows twitched slightly as he asked in a low voice, “Is this enough?”
“En.” Although the other couldn’t see it, Lin Yu nodded anyway. “He Chen, thank you…”
Having just been frightened, his voice was a bit off-key, sounding soft and pitiful, as if speaking any louder would make him cry.
He Chen involuntarily thought of certain images and suppressed the urge to grab the person. He licked his upper lip with the tip of his tongue and spoke in a gentle tone: “It’s fine, go to sleep.”
A moment later, he straightened up. “Let’s switch ends.”
Lin Yu was a bit dazed. “Ah? Why?”
“Aren’t you afraid?” He Chen gazed at him. “Let your head be a bit further from the balcony.”
Only then did Lin Yu understand his meaning; he climbed up and swapped positions with him.
“Be careful,” He Chen urged thoughtfully, but his eyes were glued to that dazzling stretch of snowy white.
Lin Yu was arching his back, kneeling on the bed as he crawled bit by bit toward the other end. In the process, he accidentally pulled the top half of his pajamas upward, but since it was dark, he didn’t pay it any mind.
The two successfully swapped head and foot. Fearing he would crowd He Chen, Lin Yu pressed himself even closer to the wall and whispered, “Goodnight.”
“Don’t be afraid, I’m right here.” He Chen lifted the thin quilt and shared half of it with him. “Goodnight, have a good dream.”
Lin Yu clutched the corner of the quilt, a surge of warmth quietly rising in his heart.
He had seen ghosts in the dormitory before, but the other roommates’ reactions were always to laugh at his cowardice; no one ever took it seriously.
After all, most college students were staunch materialists, especially male Computer Science students.
Perhaps He Chen didn’t believe it either, but he was too gentle; not only did he not refuse his unreasonable request, but he also comforted him repeatedly.
Lin Yu tucked himself in and couldn’t resist tilting his head to glance at the balcony.
This time he saw nothing; the ghost was truly gone.
Was it another coincidence, or did He Chen really have a special ability that he himself didn’t know about?
And the ghost that appeared just now meant that Chen Sensen was already dead. Clearly, they had been in class together during the day—how could he suddenly…
The next morning, Lin Yu opened his eyes groggily.
Before his consciousness was fully awake, he felt as if his feet were being pressed by something. A faint, warm breath blew on the soles of his feet, feeling a bit numb and itchy.
He tried to pull his feet back, only for a large hand like iron pliers to grab his ankle.
Lin Yu knit his brows impatiently and kicked out hard in a reflex.
What is this, disturbing someone’s dreams…
In the next second, a familiar muffled groan rang out by his ear.
Lin Yu’s brain went blank for a few seconds before he suddenly propped up his upper body and looked toward his feet.
His two legs were resting on a broad, solid chest, with one foot treading on an elegantly lined jaw, while He Chen was raising a hand to cover his nose and looking at him.
The memories of last night flooded his mind, and Lin Yu suddenly panicked: “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to kick you.”
It was over. This wasn’t the first time he had repaid kindness with a blow; He Chen was definitely going to be angry.
Those ink-black eyes rippled with a bit of helpless laughter as He Chen asked jokingly, “Lin Yu, do you have a problem with my nose?”
“O-of course not!” Lin Yu stuttered for once. “I really didn’t do it on purpose…”
In fact, He Chen’s nose was very good-looking: the root was full, the bridge was high and straight, and it looked perfect from both the front and the side.
Li Yanchen had even joked that with such a superior nose, ‘that’ ability must be very strong…
“Alright, I know it was an accident,” He Chen said calmly.
Lin Yu quickly pulled back his wandering thoughts and looked down, only to realize his ankle was still in the other’s hand.
But he didn’t dare use force again, reminding him in a small, insecure voice: “Um… could you let go of my foot first?”
“Hmm?” He Chen seemed to have just realized he was holding his foot. His thumb pads brushed over the protruding wrist bone—intentionally or not—before he released his large palm nonchalantly.
Lin Yu quickly retracted his leg, the skin that had been brushed feeling slightly hot.
“No wonder last night I kept feeling something burrowing into my arms,” He Chen asked with a smile. “Are you very sensitive to the cold?”
At the thought of having stuffed his feet into his roommate’s arms for warmth all night, Lin Yu’s earlobes turned a bit hot. He lowered his long lashes and didn’t dare look at him. “I washed them.”
A layer of red blush rose on the white-jade-flawless ear tip, complementing that tiny crimson mole and showing a kind of inexplicable, bewitching color.
He Chen’s pupils constricted slightly, and that bit of red seemed to be instantly imprinted into the depths of his dark eyes.
His Adam’s apple bobbed up and down. Finally unable to endure it, he leaned over and pinched the small earlobe.
The hot earlobe felt excellent to the touch, incredibly soft, as if it could be crushed with just a bit of force.
Lin Yu trembled slightly and instinctively tilted his head to dodge that large, cool hand.
“I thought something was stuck on your ear,” He Chen immediately lowered his hand and explained warmly.
“This…” Lin Yu also touched his own earlobe. “It’s nothing, it’s a mole.”
“I see.” He Chen looked at him with a beaming smile. “I’ve heard that a mole on the earlobe is a sign of wealth. It seems you’ll be rich in the future.”
“That’s fake.” Lin Yu let out a laugh. “If one’s fortune could be seen that easily, then the professional—”
“Something happened! Something happened! A huge thing happened!” Li Yanchen’s urgent, loud voice rang out from outside the door, interrupting the rest of his sentence.
Lin Yu’s heart jumped, immediately thinking of the ghost that had appeared last night.
Li Yanchen pushed open the dorm door, gasping for breath: “A life was lost!”
Lin Yu’s expression was unexpectedly calm. “Who happened?”
“Chen Sensen! Our classmate Chen Sensen!” Li Yanchen took a breath and poured out the facts like beans from a bag. “Didn’t I buy a ticket for the morning bus? Just as I stepped out of the dorm building this morning, I heard Wang Chen from the class next door say the police cars were here. I couldn’t help but go take a look, and only then did I find out that our classmate Chen Sensen jumped off a building! He jumped from the top floor of the Technology Building last night and was only discovered and reported to the police this morning!”
Lin Yu’s hand resting on the bed tightened involuntarily, and his voice went a bit hoarse: “What’s the situation now?”
The Technology Building was the tallest building at A University. To jump from the top floor—no wonder the deathly appearance was so horrific…
“The police have already cordoned off the Technology Building. Luckily it’s National Day, otherwise, it would definitely cause chaos!” Li Yanchen grabbed a cup from the desk and took a drink of water, sighing with a solemn expression. “Why would he commit suicide by jumping off a building for no reason…”
Chen Sensen was very introverted and usually kept to himself. Although there were rumors that he was gay, it didn’t affect anyone else; everyone just made a few jokes in private at most.
A living classmate, and one who lived right above them, was suddenly gone like that.
“Wait, could it be—” Li Yanchen suddenly shivered and lowered his voice. “Could someone have pushed him…”
Lin Yu thought of the ghost he had seen last night and only said one thing: “Let’s wait for the results of the police investigation.”
In folk traditions, there are many sayings about suicides. The one people hear most is that suicides go to hell.
In reality, no matter the method of death, once a person dies, the spirit leaves the body and enters reincarnation.
If a spirit with extremely heavy resentment or deep obsession lingers in the human world, it becomes a ghost.
Ghosts are also divided into good and bad. Ghosts like Qing Mei’s parents, who couldn’t let go of their child, are good ghosts; as long as you help them fulfill their final wishes from life, they will naturally leave this world. Fierce ghosts wrapped in resentment either seek revenge and claim lives or look for scapegoats; that’s when a Celestial Master needs to step in.
And last night, Lin Yu saw resentment on Chen Sensen’s ghost, which also meant he might not have committed suicide.
Who would dare to kill someone in the school?
Lin Yu was thinking blankly until he felt something cover his hand.
Looking down, he saw a large hand patting the back of his hand.
He Chen said with concern, “Your complexion isn’t great. Do you want to sleep a bit more?”
Lin Yu shook his head gently. “I’m fine.”
Li Yanchen put down his water cup, his gaze sweeping between the two on the top bunk, and his eyes suddenly widened: “What’s the situation? Why are you two sleeping in the same bed?”
Lin Yu found it a bit difficult to explain: “I…”
“I had a nightmare last night. After waking up, I was a bit scared, so I asked Lin Yu to come over and sleep with me,” He Chen explained calmly, his serious tone sounding completely normal.
“Pffft—” Li Yanchen nearly spat out a mouthful of water. “No way? He Chen, you?”
He Chen’s face was as calm as water. “What?”
“Someone as tall and strong as you is scared of nightmares?” Li Yanchen rubbed the goosebumps on his arms, looking like he couldn’t believe it. “You’re even more cowardly than Xiao Yu?”
“Who told you that height and courage are directly proportional?” He Chen smiled. “I’ve been cowardly since I was a child. It’s innate.”
“I’m convinced!” Li Yanchen gave him a thumbs up. “A real man is brave enough to face his own weaknesses!”
At those words, Lin Yu’s earlobes turned hot again.
After a while, Li Yanchen left with his suitcase.
Lin Yu did a quick wash-up and went to the cafeteria for breakfast with He Chen.
On the first day of National Day, most students had already gone home. Those who remained were ordered by their class instructors to stay in their dorms. The cafeteria was completely empty.
Lin Yu took a few bites and suddenly said, “I want to go to the Technology Building and take a look.”
He Chen wasn’t surprised at all and nodded in agreement. “Okay, I’ll go with you.”
The Computer Science major usually had classes in the Technology Building. At this moment, the main entrance was cordoned off by police with caution tape.
Because of his special constitution, even though he carried a spiritual tool with him, Lin Yu usually wouldn’t take the initiative to get close to any accident scene. After all, no one knew what accidents might happen.
But this time, he stood in the shade of a tree not far away, looking at the white outlines on the ground marking the body’s position, trying to reconstruct the scene in his mind.
In a trance, he saw a thin figure leap from the top floor. After a few short seconds, there was a “bang” as he hit the ground.
The moment he hit the ground face-first, his neck snapped first, followed by his limbs and all the bones in his body, cracking into several pieces.
The pile of scattered person on the ground lifted its head in a bizarre and distorted posture, revealing a blood-mangled face to him.
“Ah!” Lin Yu was startled and instinctively turned around and closed his eyes, bumping into the chest of the person behind him.
“What’s wrong?” He Chen seemed to hesitate for a moment before slowly raising a hand to cover the back of Lin Yu’s rounded head, rubbing it gently.
Lin Yu took a deep breath. “I just… couldn’t help but think about the scene of Chen Sensen jumping off the building.”
“It’s okay, don’t think too much.” He Chen held the back of his head, comforting him in a low, soft voice, while his gaze fell on the pile of mangled flesh on the ground.
In the next instant, those hollow, bloody eyes widened abruptly, and two lines of bloody tears flowed out. The broken limbs on the ground also writhed frantically, as if they had seen something terrifying.
“Look again carefully; there’s nothing there,” He Chen said in a low voice, patting the soft black hair again.
Lin Yu looked over skeptically, locking eyes with that nauseating scene.
He turned his head back at lightning speed and almost instinctively buried his face in He Chen’s shoulder.
“What’s wrong again?” a puzzled voice came from above.
In a place he couldn’t see, the elegantly shaped thin lips clearly quirked up, forming a pleasant and eerie curve.
