- Chapter 7 - Seven Second Playthroughs
The White Bone Secret Realm opens once every three years, and each sect is permitted to send only ten disciples inside.
The primary requirement for entry is that one’s cultivation must be below the Nascent Soul stage. Generally, those who enter are the elite disciples of their respective sects. These candidates are chosen either through merit—such as the top ten winners of the competition at the Qionghua Sect—or through personal connections.
Of course, it isn’t just sect members who enter; rogue cultivators participate as well. While the secret realm is filled with opportunities, it is equally fraught with danger. Typically, rogue cultivators without life-saving magical treasures wouldn’t dare set foot inside.
Shao Xibei was now able to walk freely. During this time, Shen Yunyan had visited once, but she couldn’t even make it through the door of Zhao Shuangbai’s residence. Shao Xibei had been missing for several days, yet no one had come looking for her; it was clear the original owner of this body truly didn’t have a single friend.
Zhao Shuangbai had stayed here these past few days, practicing her cultivation without pause. To be a once-in-ten-thousand-years cultivation genius and still work this hard—it was simply too much “involution.”
However, her communication with Shao Xibei was essentially zero, aside from the occasional glance she threw her way.
Shao Xibei found those looks hard to describe. For instance, they occurred when she was internally complaining that the drawings in the basic cultivation manual were ugly, or when she would peek at Zhao Shuangbai practicing her sword techniques and think to herself, Wow, she’s amazing. It gave Shao Xibei the creeping illusion that Zhao Shuangbai could actually hear her inner thoughts.
Today was the day the White Bone Secret Realm was set to open.
Zhao Shuangbai received a voice transmission summoning her to the main peak. She fluidly executed the final move of her sword technique and sheathed her blade. She originally intended to fly off on her sword immediately, but she suddenly remembered Shao Xibei.
A trip to the secret realm would take at least a month.
It wasn’t that she was worried about Shao Xibei; by now, she knew quite clearly that this child was a completely different person on the inside than she appeared on the outside.
Zhao Shuangbai walked up to Shao Xibei, her tall figure blocking the sunlight. Shao Xibei looked up from her basic cultivation manual, her eyes crinkling into beautiful crescents upon seeing who it was.
“Bai, are you finished practicing?”
She spoke quite smoothly now. After all, she was someone who had suffered a head injury; whether she acted foolish or clever now could be easily explained away. And Zhao Shuangbai didn’t seem to suspect anything.
“Mm,” Zhao Shuangbai answered simply. She then added, “I have business and need to go far away.”
A few days ago, Zhao Shuangbai would have found it hard to believe she would tell someone she barely knew about her departures. She watched quietly as the person before her shifted from happy to sad upon hearing the news.
Her slender, delicate eyebrows furrowed, and her eyes instantly brimmed with moisture, full of reluctance.
“Can I go with Bai?” her voice was soft and sweet.
So “cutesy”! Hahaha, Shao Xibei laughed wildly in her head. [As if this won’t win you over.]
A faint glimmer of a smile flashed in Zhao Shuangbai’s eyes, but it was so fast that Shao Xibei missed it, continuing her performance.
“I can’t bear to be away from Bai.”
Zhao Shuangbai replied with two words: “You can’t.”
Shao Xibei withered instantly: “Really? I really can’t?” She looked pitifully dejected.
“You can,” a gentle female voice drifted over. It belonged to neither Zhao Shuangbai nor Shao Xibei.
Both turned to look back.
Shen Yunyan, dressed in a robe of striking red, walked toward them with a graceful pace and a face full of smiles. Three peach blossom petals were painted between her brows, and her lips were touched with a light red rouge. The breeze caught her hem, making it look like a blooming crabapple flower—a heart-stopping beauty.
Yet, neither of the two people before her appreciated the sight. One was Zhao Shuangbai, who had zero interest in beauty, and the other was Shao Xibei, who knew her true face.
Shen Yunyan’s meticulous morning preparations were wasted on the blind.
Since Zhao Shuangbai and Shao Xibei were in an open clearing today without any protective barriers, Zhao Shuangbai wasn’t surprised that Shen Yunyan could walk right up to them.
Shen Yunyan stopped at a moderate distance, her gaze fixed directly on the small figure of Shao Xibei sitting on the ground.
“Ah Xi, do you want to go to the secret realm? I can take you.”
As if stung by that gaze, Shao Xibei scrambled up and dove behind Zhao Shuangbai, hiding herself completely as if Shen Yunyan were some kind of terrifying beast.
Shen Yunyan’s smile stiffened. She didn’t understand why Ah Xi’s attitude toward her was like this in this lifetime.
“Bai… Bai, let’s go back, okay? I’m scared.”
Shao Xibei’s voice was tiny and light, but the other two were cultivators and heard it with ease.
Shen Yunyan’s fingers tightened. Scared? What is she scared of? Is she scared of me?
“Ah Xi, I—” Shen Yunyan’s words were cut off before she could speak.
“Bai, Bai! Let’s go, please.” Shao Xibei reached out and gently pinched Zhao Shuangbai’s sleeve. A slight tremor was transmitted to Zhao Shuangbai through the fabric.
Confusion flashed in Zhao Shuangbai’s eyes. Why was Shao Xibei so afraid of Shen Yunyan?
But now was not the time for deep investigation; she had to gather at the main peak.
She said, “Let’s go.”
Shao Xibei kept a light hold on Zhao Shuangbai’s sleeve, nearly sticking to her side as they moved. To Shen Yunyan’s shock, Zhao Shuangbai—with her cold, distant personality—didn’t push her away.
From a distance, the two of them looked as intimate as if they were walking hand-in-hand. This scene drove Shen Yunyan mad with jealousy, her heart filling with resentment.
This isn’t right. This is all wrong.
Ah Xi is supposed to be by my side!
