- Chapter 56 - Nine Second Playthroughs
How unlucky. Shao Xibei performed the “delete and block” combo, completely blacklisting Song Xin’s number.
In a sense, she was quite the one to hold a grudge.
The Shang Family.
Shang Yin clutched her phone, staring blankly at her empty chat log with Shao Xibei.
She wanted to send a message, but she didn’t know what to say.
Shao Xibei probably hadn’t realized that Shang Yin was the person she had gone on the blind date with.
Knock, knock.
A knock came from the door. “Xiao Yin, it’s me.”
Shang Yin turned off her screen and opened the door. Standing there was a man who looked exactly like her.
“Brother, why aren’t you resting yet?”
Shang Yuan reached out his hand; a car key lay in his palm. “The task was handled successfully. Here is what I promised you.”
Shang Yin reached out to take it, but she wasn’t as happy as she expected to be.
She and Shang Yuan were fraternal twins, and their facial features were almost identical, save for hers being slightly softer.
“Brother, do you know about the Second Young Lady of the Shao family?”
Shang Yuan rubbed his chin thoughtfully. “I know of her. I looked into the Shao family when I returned to the country. The Second Young Lady is a playboy with no real talent. She’s kept people on her payroll—basically, she’s a useless socialite.”
“People in those circles seem to look down on her quite a bit.”
“However, the Shao family’s personal data is well-protected; even photos of them rarely leak. Why? Are you interested in her?”
“No reason, just asking. Anyway, time for bed. Bye.”
Shao Xibei spent her days idling about, doing absolutely nothing of substance. Lately, it felt as if her phone had been put under a total communications blackout.
Aside from Li Chenxu occasionally messaging her to hang out, the only other person was that girl she had added last time. But after Shao Xibei ignored her first message, the girl never reached out again.
As for Song Xiuran, he seemed to have vanished into thin air, without a single word.
Shao Xibei was happy to enjoy the peace. Since no one looked for her, she didn’t look for anyone else. With no “missions” being issued, she was in a completely “Zen” state.
She stayed home every day, eating and drinking to her heart’s content.
Shao Yu and Father Shao actually began to think she had changed her ways since she wasn’t out partying.
After lounging around for many days, Shao Xibei decided to hit the streets today to stretch her legs. She didn’t drive, choosing instead to walk to a nearby commercial district.
The Shao family’s villa was located in a prime area, with a large-scale shopping street just a short distance away.
Looking at the bustling market, Shao Xibei felt quite cheerful.
However, her happiness did not last long.
Just as she bought a serving of takoyaki, a woman’s scream pierced the air.
“Aaahhh! Someone call the police!!!”
Shao Xibei had no intention of joining the spectacle. But as fate would have it, even if she didn’t want to watch, others did.
Just like that, she was pushed to the very front by the surging crowd.
“Damn it! Stay back!!!” In the center of a cleared-out space, a man was holding a knife to a young woman’s throat.
The man was dressed in rags, disheveled and filthy. He held a fruit knife tightly against the girl’s neck.
A faint trail of blood had already been drawn on the girl’s slender, pale neck.
Yet, her expression remained calm, as if she weren’t afraid of the situation at all.
Shao Xibei recognized her at a glance—it was the girl she had added that day.
Of all the times to finally leave the house, I run into this, Shao Xibei thought, sighing deeply to herself.
The man appeared to be mentally unstable, and the surrounding crowd was making a chaotic racket.
The hand holding the knife was trembling constantly, making onlookers nervous that he might accidentally take a life with one wrong twitch.
Shao Xibei didn’t want to get involved in this mess, but the crowd behind her had formed a solid wall of people. She couldn’t get out.
In the distance, the sound of police sirens began to wail.
Just then, the situation shifted abruptly. Taking advantage of a split-second lapse in the man’s concentration, the girl pried his hand away, broke the hold, and kicked him away with a powerful strike.
As luck would have it, the man was kicked directly toward Shao Xibei.
In a near-instant blur, Shao Xibei found a knife pressed against her own throat.
The crowd surrounding her screamed and scattered, creating a vacuum of empty space around her. Her takoyaki spilled across the ground, ruined. The sharp blade accidentally grazed her skin, leaving a thin trail of blood. However, Shao Xibei felt no pain; she wasn’t even aware that her neck had begun to bleed.
Shang Yin (disguised as Shang Yuan) breathed out as she kicked the man away, her heartbeat not faltering for a second. But as she steadied herself and looked toward the man, she saw that he had already seized a new hostage.
Shang Yin froze. Why is she here?!
Shao Xibei stared down at the takoyaki rolling on the ground, her mind completely blank. Going from a bystander to the victim—this was the price of watching the commotion. She had only come out on a whim to take a simple walk; she hadn’t expected to be served such a “grand gift.”
Some bystanders had been recording videos from the very beginning. Shao Xibei desperately wanted to cover her face. In this age of advanced internet, this incident would surely be posted online. She only hoped that Shao Yu and her father wouldn’t see it.
Shao Xibei moved like a marionette, shifting only as the man’s movements forced her to. Suddenly, a wave of sleepiness washed over her. She managed to suppress a yawn, but she couldn’t stop the tears. Her eyes welled up, looking misty and bright; paired with the blood on her neck, she looked utterly pitiful and aggrieved.
Shang Yin fixed her gaze on the scene, searching for a flaw in the man’s stance so she could subdue him without letting Shao Xibei get hurt.
