- Chapter 47 - Deep Mansion 26
What kind of relationship?
Shao Xibei leaned down and lightly kissed Pei Xi’s lips. “The kind of relationship you want.”
Pei Xi didn’t sleep a wink that night because of those words.
The next morning, she sat in the courtyard early, staring blankly at Shao Xibei.
Meanwhile, Shao Xibei was nearby drawing talismans, quickly finishing several of them. Turning her head, she saw that Pei Xi was still gazing at her fixedly; it seemed the previous night had affected her far too deeply.
She handed the finished talismans to Si Wan, who was organizing medicinal herbs nearby.
“Miss Si, burn these into ashes and have the patients drink them with water, just as I told you yesterday.”
Si Wan took them. She had prepared the paper, brushes, and ink herself. She believed that even if this didn’t solve the problem, it wouldn’t harm the patients’ bodies. Currently, there were no other options; she had to take a gamble.
When the first feverish patient successfully recovered after drinking the talisman water, Si Wan knew she had won the bet.
A smile she couldn’t suppress broke across her face; for the first time, she felt an unprecedented sense of relief. All the patients thought she had discovered the cure and were full of praise for her.
Si Wan shook her head. “This is all thanks to someone else.”
She didn’t mention the talismans, believing that most commoners wouldn’t believe it anyway.
After a busy day, Si Wan and Qing Sui returned home once more. Shao Xibei had already prepared a large stack of talismans—some drawn by her, and others by Pei Xi.
She packaged the talismans and handed them to Si Wan.
“Si Wan, Pei Xi and I will be setting off tomorrow. Consider these a parting gift.”
Si Wan took them, surprised. “So soon?” She was quite reluctant to see them go.
Shao Xibei nodded.
Si Wan sighed, then added, “It’s at least a seven-day journey from here to Yuzhou City. Tomorrow, I’ll get two horses for you and the Benefactor so the journey will be faster.”
Shao Xibei replied, “Thank you, Miss Si, but one will be enough. I’ll just ride Xiao Hui.”
Si Wan nodded. “I’ll prepare a map to Yuzhou City for you then.”
This time, they truly didn’t know when they would meet again.
Si Wan could sense it vaguely. Last night, she had packed many things: dry rations, some silver pieces, and clothing—all daily necessities.
Shao Xibei only accepted the clothes and the horse Si Wan had procured.
“We have already received too much kindness from you; we cannot take any more.”
Si Wan feigned anger. “Is my life not worth even this much?”
Shao Xibei smiled and shook her head, shooting a glance at Pei Xi.
Pei Xi spoke up: “It is already enough.” Pei Xi rarely spoke, but every word she uttered carried a certain weight and authority for Si Wan.
Si Wan could only withdraw her hand in disappointment, though she was still worried.
Qing Sui gently stroked the top of Si Wan’s head. “Given Miss Pei’s strength, you needn’t worry too much.”
Shao Xibei climbed onto Xiao Hui. “Miss Qing is right.”
Seeing that it was getting late and Si Wan and the others still had to go to the medical hall, the group shared their final farewells. Shao Xibei and Pei Xi then set off on the road toward Yuzhou City.
Actually, this was Pei Xi’s first time riding a horse, but she quickly grasped the essence of it and rode with steady confidence.
Shao Xibei, riding atop Xiao Hui, called out to Pei Xi, “Haha! Pei Xi, let’s race! Let’s see who’s faster—Xiao Hui or your horse.”
Xiao Hui seemed to understand; without a word, he began sprinting through the mountain forest with Shao Xibei on his back.
Pei Xi shook her head helplessly. The more she got to know Shao Xibei, the more she realized how much like a child she could be. Despite the thought, Pei Xi didn’t hesitate to spur her horse and follow close behind.
The two of them traveled like this, playing and teasing one another. At night, they would build a fire and embrace for long kisses; when hungry, they caught wild rabbits and small fish, picked wild fruits, and drank from mountain springs.
When they had nothing to do, they simply admired the surrounding scenery and chatted—usually with Shao Xibei talking and Pei Xi listening.
Riding her horse while holding Shao Xibei in her arms, Pei Xi felt that these days were almost too comfortable. Once she finally dealt with Pei Ming, she would take Shao Xibei deep into the mountains to live.
What was originally a seven-day journey was shortened to just four days by their pace.
When the high, fortified walls came into view, Shao Xibei knew they had reached their destination. Just as Si Wan had said, the city was under lockdown. The heavy iron gates were tightly shut, leaving the situation inside a mystery to those without.
However, Shao Xibei could see the Qi swirling above Yuzhou City—it was a dense, pitch black, looking as if it were about to collapse inward. With such strong Huiqi (unlucky/ominous energy), it was clear that many people had already died inside the city. This was why the gloom lingered so long above the skyline.
The city gates could not be opened, but Shao Xibei could fly Pei Xi over the top; the horse and the wolf, however, would have to stay behind.
Shao Xibei gave Xiao Hui his instructions: “Xiao Hui, watch over the horse. We have to leave for a while. If anyone tries to catch you, run away immediately, okay?”
Xiao Hui let out a low howl to show he understood. Shao Xibei nodded with satisfaction; Xiao Hui really was getting smarter and smarter.
Shao Xibei led Pei Xi to the base of the city wall, found the easiest spot to gain a foothold, and reached out to scoop Pei Xi up in a princess carry. Channeling spiritual power into her feet, she leaped lightly, carrying them both directly over the wall and into the city.
After landing and setting Pei Xi down, the two of them looked at the deathly silent streets and fell into a somber silence. Pei Xi remembered this street; in her memory, it was always bustling with the noise of a crowd.
Shao Xibei frowned. This aura… it reminded her of someone.
Pei Qing.
But Pei Qing should have been dead long ago.
