- Chapter 43 - Deep Mansion 22
That night, Pei Xi did not fall asleep.
When the sky was barely grey with the first light of dawn, she got up and dressed while Shao Xibei was still sleeping.
Amidst the distant sound of crowing roosters, Pei Xi gently pushed open the door. She glanced back and saw that Shao Xibei had not woken up.
Pei Xi quietly closed the door behind her.
She went into the courtyard, found a stone stool, and sat down, staring up at the murky sky, lost in thought.
After an unknown amount of time, the horizon began to turn white; dawn was approaching.
Suddenly, Shao Xibei’s voice called out from inside the room. It wasn’t loud, but Pei Xi heard it clearly.
She immediately strode back toward the room.
“Pei Xi, come here quickly,” Shao Xibei called.
Pei Xi pushed open the door to see Shao Xibei half-raising both hands.
“Pei Xi, look! My hands can move!”
Pei Xi breathed a sigh of relief, having feared something was wrong.
She walked over to the bedside and reached out to grasp Shao Xibei’s wrists.
Shao Xibei struggled slightly; Pei Xi could feel a strength that, while almost negligible, was definitely there.
Pei Xi was genuinely happy. She couldn’t help but let out a smile—very, very faint, but enough to show her mood.
Holding the wrists, she crouched down and naturally leaned her face against them.
“That’s wonderful. If it keeps going like this, you’ll surely recover very soon.”
Shao Xibei moved her fingers, and with a weak force, she gently brushed them against Pei Xi’s cheek.
Shao Xibei said, “Pei Xi, I want to get dressed.”
Pei Xi instantly remembered that when she had finished washing up and returned to the room last night, Shao Xibei was already asleep. To avoid waking her, she hadn’t put any clothes on her.
Pei Xi stood up abruptly. Remembering the scene from the previous night, her ears began to turn red again.
And now, early in the morning, she had to face such a scene once more.
Pei Xi found it difficult to breathe. If this continued every day, she wouldn’t be able to control herself.
I must help Sister Shao regain her mobility as soon as possible.
Pei Xi painstakingly dressed her, then brought water for her to wash her face and rinse her mouth.
After gently wiping Shao Xibei’s face and feeding her the mouthwash, she tidied her hair. Looking at Shao Xibei, who was being so obedient and letting her do as she pleased, a strange sense of satisfaction grew in Pei Xi’s heart.
It wouldn’t be so bad if things stayed like this forever.
When Pei Xi carried Shao Xibei out of the room, Qing Sui and Si Wan were already sitting in the courtyard.
They had prepared breakfast at some point; on the stone table sat light lean meat porridge and two plates of green vegetable buns.
Seeing Pei Xi and the others, Si Wan greeted them warmly.
“Benefactor, come over and eat.”
When they reached the stone table, Si Wan suggested, “Benefactor, why don’t you put Miss Shao down first? Otherwise, it will be hard for you to eat.”
Pei Xi shook her head firmly. “It’s fine.”
She sat down with the woman in her arms, placing her on her lap and wrapping an arm around her shoulder so she could lean into her chest.
Si Wan was speechless.
The Benefactor is being far too clingy.
Of course, Si Wan could only complain in her head.
Si Wan was someone who couldn’t stay idle. Just after finishing her meal, she couldn’t help but ask Qing Sui, who was beside her.
“Qingqing, how is that Pei Mansion doing?”
Pei Xi and Shao Xibei both turned their attention toward Si Wan.
Qing Sui replied, “Still the same as ever.”
Si Wan clicked her tongue twice. “Tsk tsk, no one dares to even pass by there anymore.”
Shao Xibei asked, “Pei Mansion? Which Pei Mansion is it?”
Meeting Shao Xibei’s puzzled gaze, Si Wan got even more excited and started the story from the beginning. “Oh, it’s that Pei Mansion in Yuzhou City. The richest family in Yuzhou.”
Pei Xi’s eyes flickered for a moment as she continued to listen to Si Wan’s narration.
“Two years ago, Master Pei passed away from illness, and Madam Pei inherited the entire estate. The second Miss Pei fled to parts unknown after allegedly murdering her new husband.”
“Every night, the sharp sound of a woman crying comes from the Pei Mansion.”
“Furthermore, several night watchmen who passed by claim to have seen terrifying black shadows hovering over the estate.”
“Since then, the Pei Mansion has earned a new nickname.”
Si Wan’s voice turned low and eerie: “And that is… the Ghost Mansion.”
After hearing these words, Shao Xibei lowered her eyes in thought. She believed that there were “ghosts” (in a metaphorical or human sense) within the Pei Mansion, but she didn’t believe the mansion was actually haunted by spirits.
After all, Pei Ming was a Taoist priest who had learned quite a lot; how could he possibly allow his own home to become haunted?
Shao Xibei leaned her mouth close to Pei Xi’s ear and asked softly, “Pei Xi, what do you think?”
Pei Xi turned her head slightly and replied in an equally low voice, “I don’t think much of it.”
To an observer, the two of them looked as if they were sharing an intimate, whispered moment.
Si Wan’s teeth practically ached from watching them.
They act like this and they aren’t even in a committed relationship yet; if they ever make it official, it’ll be even worse. The Benefactor will probably end up tying Miss Shao to her waist with a rope.
Qing Sui carried the dishes back into the kitchen and returned with a bowl of medicine.
She placed the medicine in front of Shao Xibei and said, “This is a decoction to regulate the body. I brewed it last night, and it’s no longer hot, so you can drink it directly.” Her meaning was clear: this was for Shao Xibei.
Pei Xi made no effort to hide her lack of trust. She asked Shao Xibei, “Shao Xibei, may I taste it first?”
Shao Xibei, of course, agreed.
Pei Xi picked up the bowl and took a small sip. After a moment, once she was sure her body had no adverse reaction, she felt at ease.
Si Wan and Qing Sui didn’t mind; in fact, they felt that being this vigilant in a strange place was a good thing.
Holding the bowl, Pei Xi placed the rim against Shao Xibei’s lips and fed her bit by bit.
Traditional medicine is always bitter, and Shao Xibei finished it with a scrunched-up face.
Pei Xi watched her intently. Truthfully, she had always liked looking at Shao Xibei, but never with the intensity she felt now. She wanted nothing more than for Shao Xibei to be in her line of sight at every single moment.
