Shao Xibei gave a helpless smile. “You’re getting more and more clingy. You never used to act spoiled with me before.” Her voice grew lower as she spoke until it vanished entirely.

Silence fell over the cave. Not long after Shao Xibei closed her eyes, a single tear finally slid down from the corner of Pei Xi’s eye.

Pei Xi maintained that position for an unknown amount of time before slowly opening her eyes.

She needed to get some food; Sister Shao needed nutrition.

As she reached the cave entrance, Pei Xi saw the wolf. It was still crouching there. Pei Xi’s eyes flickered.

She walked toward the wolf, knelt down, and whispered, “You want to follow me?” She didn’t care if the wolf could understand or not as she continued, “Then you must guard the person inside well.”

As she finished, Pei Xi pointed toward Shao Xibei inside the cave.

The wolf’s eyes shifted toward the cave, and it let out a low howl as if in response.

Pei Xi stood up, her face devoid of emotion. She took her weapon and headed deep into the dense forest.

The weather today was not good; dark clouds weighed heavy overhead.

Pei Xi didn’t intend to stay out long, but after searching for a while, she saw no animals. Moving further would take her too far from the cave.

Left with no choice, Pei Xi planned to catch a few fish from the small river.

However, luck was not on her side today. On the way to the river, a sudden torrential rain began to fall. Raindrops larger than beans pelted Pei Xi, causing a dull ache upon impact.

By the time Pei Xi reached the river, she was soaked to the bone. The water was no longer calm like usual, but churning violently.

It seemed there would be no harvest today.

Pei Xi intended to head back, as there was no telling when the storm would end.

Yet, just as Pei Xi turned around, she actually heard a cry for help.

The voice was intermittent.

Pei Xi frowned and looked upstream. Surprisingly, she saw a woman in the river, her hands clutching the vines on the bank, trying to climb up. But the current was too swift, and the waves buffeted her repeatedly, halting her progress.

The woman continued to scream: “Help! Is anyone there?! Please help me!!”

Pei Xi thought for a moment and decided to save her. This was the first time she had encountered another human in two years; perhaps this person knew a way out of here.

It wasn’t that she hadn’t looked for an exit over the past two years, but she couldn’t stray too far, so she had mostly lingered in this vicinity.

Pei Xi ran directly toward the sound. With her long legs, she covered the ground quickly and arrived in just a few strides.

The woman saw Pei Xi as well and hurriedly shouted, “Please save me, I beg you!!”

Pei Xi said, “Hold tight to the vines.” With that, Pei Xi grabbed the vines on the bank and pulled with great force, flinging the woman straight up onto land.

With that, Siwan pulled out a drenched picture book. When Pei Xi looked at it, she saw two semi-naked women embracing each other on the crumpled cover, which bore the large characters: Twin Flowers Playing in the Water.

Pei Xi’s brow furrowed even deeper than the creases on the book. “This… is a medical book?”

Siwan was momentarily dazed. She pulled it back to take a look: Twin Flowers Playing in the Water.

Instantly, her face turned bright red. How could she have pulled that book out? She hurriedly tucked the book away.

“Benefactor, I really am a doctor,” Siwan insisted.

Pei Xi contemplated for a long moment. The woman before her looked too weak to even truss a chicken; if anything actually happened, Pei Xi could stop her instantly. Moreover, what if she really was a doctor? Then Sister Shao would be one step closer to recovery.

Ultimately, Pei Xi agreed to Siwan’s request.

When the two returned to the cave and saw the wolf waiting outside, Siwan was startled for a moment.

Trembling, Siwan circled around the wolf and followed closely behind Pei Xi.

Upon entering the cave, Siwan immediately saw Shao Xibei lying on the pile of furs. Just as the two returned, Shao Xibei woke up. She noticed that Pei Xi had brought back a strange girl.

Siwan let out an exclamation: “What a beautiful person!”

Shao Xibei suddenly chuckled. “Thank you for the compliment. You are quite cute yourself.”

Siwan scratched her head sheepishly. This was truly the first time she had seen someone so beautiful—well, aside from her own wife, who was the most beautiful of all.

Standing to the side and watching the harmonious atmosphere between the two, Pei Xi felt a twinge of unhappiness in her heart.

She stepped forward in a few strides, directly blocking Siwan’s line of sight. Half-kneeling, she reached out to gently take Shao Xibei’s hand and naturally placed it against her own cheek.

“Sister Shao, when did you wake up?”

Shao Xibei smiled. “Just as I woke, you returned.”

Pei Xi nuzzled her hand. “I should have come back sooner.”

Siwan was soaking wet like a drowned rat, showing none of the poise of a physician. Her face even carried a touch of naive innocence, making her look like a pampered young lady from a wealthy family.

Pei Xi looked back and met Siwan’s shimmering eyes. “Since Sister Shao wants you to look, then come over. But you had better keep your hands and feet where they belong.”

Pei Xi didn’t forget to add a cold threat.

Siwan answered hurriedly, “I won’t, I won’t! My hands and feet are very well-behaved.”

Pei Xi stood up and moved to the side. Siwan walked over and crouched down. Under Pei Xi’s dagger-like gaze, she gently placed her hand on Shao Xibei’s pulse.

Siwan wondered if it was just her imagination, but the benefactor’s possessiveness toward this lady seemed incredibly intense. It felt as though her medical examination was some sort of attempt to take advantage of the woman, and the benefactor looked ready to slap her halfway across the cave.
