And so, without the slightest psychological preparation, Pei Xi followed the direction of Shao Xibei’s pointing finger and looked.
Pei Xi’s pupils contracted sharply. Her legs instinctively retreated two steps, her lips trembling uncontrollably, though she managed to restrain herself from crying out loud.
She looked toward Shao Xibei: “Are those… ghosts?” Pei Xi’s face was a terrifying shade of pale.
Shao Xibei gave an affirmative answer.
Pei Xi swallowed hard twice. She turned her head to look once more. “Will they hurt us?”
Shao Xibei’s peripheral vision swept over the struggling spirits.
“No.”
Pei Xi remained silent for a moment before asking: “How do you know this? And…” She pointed a finger toward her forehead. “Is it because of your blood that I can see them too?”
Shao Xibei gazed at Pei Xi. This child possessed a maturity far beyond her years; anyone else would have been scared out of their wits instantly, let alone remain calm enough to ask such questions.
Shao Xibei patted Pei Xi on the shoulder, answering with a question of her own: “Is it impressive?”
Pei Xi nodded. Perhaps Shao Xibei had simply applied a bit of blood to her forehead, but being able to let a common, ordinary person like herself see such things was impressive enough.
Shao Xibei said: “Let me show you something else.”
She looked around, finally locking her target on the sheets of paper resting on the table.
Pei Xi watched as Shao Xibei walked over, dipped her finger in a bit of tea, and began drawing symbols she didn’t recognize on the paper.
The paper was thin. Even though Shao Xibei used very little tea, it was already soaked through. Shao Xibei picked up the paper and walked to Pei Qing’s bedside.
Then, Pei Xi witnessed a miraculous scene. Shao Xibei placed the talisman paper onto Pei Qing’s body—or perhaps, onto the bodies of those small ghosts.
A few tones Pei Xi had never heard before escaped Shao Xibei’s lips, and then the water-soaked paper actually emitted a blue flame.
Pei Xi stared blankly at the sight. The small ghosts seemed to be affected by the paper; they slowly closed their pitch-black eyes and their bodies stopped struggling and twisting, as if they had fallen asleep.
When the last of the blue fire flickered out, every ghost on Pei Qing’s body grew still. The water-soaked paper had vanished completely.
After finishing the operation, Shao Xibei looked at Pei Xi. Seeing the child still staring in a daze, she tilted her head: “Want to learn?”
Those three words left Pei Xi’s mind even more bewildered. She blinked in disbelief: “Can I learn?”
Shao Xibei’s lips curled slightly. “Of course.”
For the first time, an emotion known as expectation rose within Pei Xi. Perhaps she really could.
Shao Xibei cast one last glance at the bedridden Pei Qing. Considering she had been staying here eating and drinking for free for so long, she drew one more talisman and burned it for Pei Qing before leaving.
As the talisman paper burned, Shao Xibei suddenly coughed up a mouthful of blood.
Pei Xi immediately watched her with tension. Although she often saw Shao Xibei cough up blood, she felt a pang of heart-palpitations every time it happened.
However, she never told anyone.
Shao Xibei took out a handkerchief and wiped the residual blood from the corner of her mouth. She noticed some blood had splattered onto the floor, but on the red wood flooring, it wasn’t very obvious.
Shao Xibei didn’t bother with it; she had overestimated her current physical condition. Using two Ghost-Suppressing Talismans had left her body weak and drained. Back in the modern era, she could have used a hundred in one go without breaking a sweat.
“Pei Xi, come and support me,” Shao Xibei said, her voice thin as a thread.
Pei Xi immediately walked over, and Shao Xibei unceremoniously rested her hand on Pei Xi’s shoulder. “Let’s go. We’re going back.”
“Okay.”
Thus, Pei Xi supported Shao Xibei as they returned to the side courtyard.
However, not long after they left, Pei Qing’s room welcomed another guest.
The moment Pei Ming entered the room, she detected a faint scent of blood. She initially thought it might be Pei Qing’s, but upon closer inspection, she found the small ghosts were all quiet, as if sleeping.
Pei Qing’s expression had also settled. Although he remained unconscious, a bystander could feel his relaxation.
Pei Ming’s brow furrowed slightly. Someone had used a Ghost-Suppressing Talisman. Her gaze caught a smear of red on the floor.
That smear of red almost blended into the red wood planks, making it difficult for an ordinary person to discover.
Pei Ming crouched down, reached out a finger to touch the blood, and brought it to her nose, closing her eyes to sniff gently.
A few seconds later, she opened her eyes and stared at the bloodstain.
It was the same as the blood that woman had coughed up yesterday.
Pei Ming went to the doorway and summoned a servant, resting her hand lightly on the servant’s shoulder for a fleeting moment before letting go.
It really was that woman.
Did she draw the Ghost-Suppressing Talisman?
At that thought, Pei Ming couldn’t help but curl her lips. This person was becoming more and more intriguing.
“Ming’er, how is that old thing doing?”
Madam Pei appeared by Pei Ming’s side at some unknown point.
Pei Ming said: “Everything is as usual.”
Madam Pei smiled with satisfaction upon hearing this. “That’s good. I was truly afraid he might suddenly get better.”
Pei Ming said warmly: “Mother, you worry too much.”
Madam Pei waved her hand. “It was indeed overthinking on my part. By the way, Ming’er, how long will you stay this time?”
Pei Ming touched her bell. “Perhaps a bit longer this time.” She had originally planned to leave after Pei Qing died, but now she had found someone worth staying a few extra days for.
Madam Pei continued: “Ming’er, how should we deal with that wench? I want her dead quickly, but I’m afraid Pei Qing gave her something good.”
Pei Ming reassured her: “It’s fine, Mother. With me here, you don’t need to worry about any of that.” However, she didn’t plan to move against that person just yet.
Having received these words, Madam Pei’s mind was at ease.
“Good, good. My dear Ming’er, if only that girl Xi were even a hair as capable as you, I wouldn’t scold her so much.”
Pei Ming listened quietly, long since accustomed to Madam Pei’s belittlement of Pei Xi.
