- Chapter 26 - Deep Mansion 5
Under the moonlight, Shao Xibei’s gaze appeared so sincere.
Looking into those dark eyes, Pei Xi couldn’t help but fall into the illusion… the illusion that she was needed.
Perhaps it wasn’t an illusion.
Shao Xibei reached out and grabbed the hemp rope: “Pei Xi, I need you.”
At this very moment, she truly was needed.
A simple sentence made Pei Xi’s heart tremble violently; it turned out that even someone as useless as her could have a moment of being needed.
Pei Xi nodded slowly: “…Okay.”
A smile blossomed on Shao Xibei’s face. “Pei Xi, you’re so kind.”
But heaven did not smile upon them. As Pei Xi began to climb, the courtyard gates were violently thrown open.
Appearing at the entrance was a withered, gaunt Pei Qing. His eye sockets were sunken, his face had turned a leaden grey, and his back seemed crushed by some invisible weight, leaving him unable to stand straight.
Standing at the gate, he immediately spotted the two girls by the courtyard wall.
He took a deep breath through his nose, his eyes locking onto Shao Xibei like a hungry wolf.
“Xiaoxi, my Xiaoxi… only by being near you do I feel at peace.”
As he spoke, Pei Qing strode toward Shao Xibei, looking terrifying and grotesque in the dark of night.
Seeing Pei Qing like this, the memories of her previous beatings filled Pei Xi with internal terror, yet she still stood firmly in front of Shao Xibei.
Pei Qing seemed to only just notice Pei Xi. He looked confused for a moment, but that quickly turned into irritation at her being in his way.
He roared unceremoniously, “Get the hell out of my way!”
Pei Xi simply stared him down. In the darkness, her light-colored pupils looked almost non-human—cold and icy.
Pei Qing froze for a second under that gaze, followed by a wave of overwhelming rage.
“You eyesore! Get lost!” He raised his large hand, preparing to strike Pei Xi across the face.
Pei Xi raised her arms in a defensive posture. She knew that with her strength, it was like throwing an egg against a stone, but she didn’t want Pei Qing to touch the person behind her.
She squeezed her eyes shut, waiting for the pain to arrive. Instead, she heard Pei Qing’s cry of agony.
Opening her eyes slowly, she discovered that a pair of pale, thin hands had somehow seized Pei Qing’s wrist.
Shao Xibei’s brow was furrowed. Honestly, touching any part of Pei Qing made her feel nauseous, but if she hadn’t, little Pei Xi would have been hit.
Pei Qing felt the pain radiating from his wrist. He tried with all his might to pull away, but those seemingly fragile, slender white fingers held him like an iron vice, leaving his wrist completely immobile.
Shao Xibei was actually a bit stunned herself. She hadn’t expected her own strength to be so immense; she had originally thought she could only barely block him, but it seemed that dealing with Pei Qing was entirely effortless for her.
Seeing that he could not break free, a fawning smile appeared on Pei Qing’s face. “Xiaoxi, I didn’t mean anything by it. Could you let go of me first?”
Shao Xibei merely sneered. With her other hand, she pulled Pei Xi behind her and then unceremoniously flung Pei Qing away.
Pei Qing never expected to be tossed aside so easily. As he sprawled on the ground, he remained dazed for a moment, unable to snap out of it.
Shao Xibei said coldly, “Pei Qing, it’s late. Go back now.”
Pei Qing stood up unsteadily from the ground, a forced smile on his lips. “Xiaoxi, you’re quite strong, aren’t you?”
He began to walk toward Shao Xibei once again.
Shao Xibei’s brow furrowed. Just now, she thought she caught a glimpse of a small child sitting on Pei Qing’s right shoulder.
She remembered the small handprints she had seen on Pei Qing a few days prior.
Combined with Pei Qing’s greyish-white cheeks, two words suddenly surfaced in her mind: “Little Ghost.”
She had no memories, yet she seemed to know everything. Ghosts—troublesome entities that plague humans.
Shao Xibei whispered under her breath, “Perhaps there really are ghosts in this world…” She spoke so softly it was more like she was talking to herself.
Pei Xi vaguely caught the word “ghost.” For reasons unknown, her hands suddenly clenched into tight fists.
It was Pei Ming.
