Night had fallen.
Chi Qing was still working in her office when Shen Xinyi came in carrying some late-night snacks.
“It’s so late—still not heading home?” Shen Xinyi said.
“There’s a merger deal I’m handling.” Chi Qing replied.
Chi Qing rubbed her temples and opened the lunchbox, mildly surprised.
“You made this?”
“Ordering takeout all the time isn’t healthy.”
Chi Qing chuckled softly. “Healthy or not, none of us live long anyway.”
“You’re always talking like you’re dying soon. But you went for a physical and came out perfectly fine,” Shen Xinyi frowned, adjusting her glasses. “That’s such a jinx.”
She walked over to the window and opened it slightly. A cold breeze rushed in and hit her chest like a slap.
From here, one could see the entirety of Haishi’s glittering nightscape — the endless traffic of Fifth Avenue, the thousands of lights coming alive after dark like stars scattered across the land.
Even the unmistakable outline of the Tianhe Technologies building stood stark against the skyline.
No wonder it was so easy to get depressed — eyes couldn’t help but be polluted by the sight.
Shen Xinyi never understood why Chi Qing insisted on placing her office in such a location.
“Is the letter of indemnity signed?” Chi Qing asked, unwrapping her chopsticks and tossing some food into her mouth while still reading through documents with her other hand.
“It’s signed. But now that it is, Chu Si’s totally off the hook.”
Shen Xinyi leaned on the desk and sighed. “I never thought Chi Yang would go that far for Pei Jiuyao.”
“She’s… quite something,” Chi Qing said flatly.
“Did you know Pei Jiuyao moved in with Chi Yang? I saw it with my own eyes a few days ago — happened to run into them while she was moving in.”
Chi Qing’s expression didn’t change. “That was only a matter of time.”
Shen Xinyi scoffed softly. “So… should we keep someone tailing Pei Jiuyao?”
“Pull them back. Let the two of them have their fun for a while.”
Chi Qing glanced up, then casually asked, “Honestly, you sure you don’t want to join the company and help me out? Being a little lawyer doesn’t seem that meaningful.”
“I just want a peaceful life, marry an Omega I like, and have a normal family. As for work, as long as I can support myself, that’s enough.”
Chi Qing lowered her eyes. “Your standards really haven’t changed.”
“Which is why President Chi should also—”
Knock knock knock—
The sound of knocking cut their conversation short.
As Shen Xinyi looked up, the secretary entered and leaned in close to Chi Qing, whispering:
“President Chi, Second Miss just took a group of bodyguards from the Chi estate.”
Chi Qing’s fingers paused mid-page. “What’s she stirring up now?”
“I’ll go check?” Shen Xinyi offered, already hopping off the desk.
Chi Qing caught her arm. “Forget it. Let her go. Chi Yang knows what she’s doing.”

A few lonely streetlamps flickered under the cold night.
A sharp gust of wind swept through, sending snakes lurking in the grass slithering away into the dark.
Chi Yang stood in the shadows, leaning against a black SUV. She pulled her cap lower over her eyes.
Beside her stood a short-haired woman, cigarette hanging loosely between her fingers.
Despite the freezing winter, the woman wore only a T-shirt and cargo pants. Her arm was wrapped in bandages, and a faint scar ran beneath her right eye.
She looked like she stood at least 1.8 meters tall.
“An,” Chi Yang said, “you sure Mo Tian came this way tonight?”
“Sure as hell. I watched her go in with my own eyes.”
The woman — “An” — raised an eyebrow and laughed, flicking her cigarette and taking another drag.
Chi Yang gave her a sharp glance. “That’s your third one tonight. Maybe quit while you’re still breathing.”
“I’ve been smoking since I was a teen. Too late to quit now.”
An chuckled again, then asked, “You sure she’ll be here? I mean, Mo Tian doesn’t seem like someone who’d mess with this kind of small fry.”
“She’ll come,” Chi Yang said coldly. “Anyone who can do her that big a favor — there’s definitely something between them.”
This was the only road leading to Mo Tian’s villa.
West City was nearly deserted — the villa district far removed from the bustling city center.
The upside: it was quiet.
As they spoke, headlights turned around the bend in the distance.
Chi Yang lowered her voice. “There — they’re here.”
An signaled silently to the others.
As Mo Tian’s car approached, several vehicles cut across and blocked the road.
The driver, alarmed, slammed on the brakes and leapt out, face fierce. “Hey! Who the hell are you?! This is a Mo family car!”
A woman with long hair stepped out of another car, leaning casually against the door with her arms crossed and a bright smile on her face.
“We’ve been waiting for a Mo family car.”
“Go.”
At her command, the team poured out of the vehicles.
The driver tried to dart back into the car but was instantly caught — the long-haired woman grabbed his shoulder, twisted his wrist behind his back, and kneed his leg to pin him against the door.
“Where do you think you’re going?”
“Who the hell are you people?!” the driver spat, cursing.
The woman casually pulled a rope from her waist, tied him up, and tossed him to the others. “Keep an eye on him.”
Meanwhile, Mo Tian’s two bodyguards were already down, and in the chaos, a short-haired woman bolted from the back seat — but she didn’t get far. She was dragged back by the collar and thrown to the ground.
The long-haired woman grabbed her by the hair and yanked her head back, exposing her face for An to see.
An gave a nod of confirmation.
“Who—who are you?!” Chu Si panicked, and in her struggle, her pheromones started to leak out.
The long-haired woman frowned, casually slapped a piece of gauze over her nape. “Don’t bother. They’re all Betas.”
Two Betas held Chu Si by the arms as the long-haired woman walked up and pinched her chin between two fingers.
“Heh. You’re actually kinda pretty.”
An’s voice came cold from behind: “Shi Xiaonian!”
“I know, I know.”
Shi Xiaonian let go with a cold laugh. “Too bad you messed with the wrong people.”
“You—you even know who I belong to? Don’t touch me!”
Shi Xiaonian turned around. Behind her came the sounds of fists, kicks, and Chu Si’s increasingly weak cries and hacking coughs.
Eventually, An walked up and pushed the others aside.
Dark red blood was pooling on the ground. She stepped in it, crouched down, and flipped Chu Si over by the collar.
“I—I’ll call the police! Who the hell are you?!”
A droplet of water fell from the leaves above and landed on Chu Si’s forehead. She flinched, eyes squeezed shut. When she opened them again, her body trembled.
Chi Yang stepped forward, removing her cap.
“Long time no see, Miss Chu.”
She tossed the cap to An and tucked her hands into the pockets of her coat, looking down.
“You satisfied with the letter of indemnity?”
“Chi Yang—it’s you!”
“You’re not afraid? You’re not afraid that I’ll—”
“Of course I’m afraid,” Chi Yang chuckled coldly. “But worst case? Half a month in detention for assault.”
“But what about when you get out? Think Mo Tian will still cover you?” Her voice was full of scorn. “Mo Tian won’t let you report this.”
Chu Si stared, shocked. “You know about me and Mo Tian…”
Chi Yang blinked innocently. “Just found out.”
“She’s into Alphas, yet went to such lengths to protect you? Who would believe that was nothing?”
She straightened, sneering. “And those injuries Xiao Mo had… funny, Mo Tian likes that stuff too.”
“Song Mo?” Chu Si suddenly laughed, blood seeping from the corner of her lips. “If it wasn’t for her, how else could I have tricked you?”
Chi Yang’s gaze darkened.
She stomped down on Chu Si’s hand.
“She was just another of your victims.”
“I actually thought you two were in love. Chu Si, I gave you more credit because of Pei Jiuyao. Turns out trash is still trash.”
“And how is Pei Jiuyao any different from me?” Chu Si clutched Chi Yang’s shoe, teeth clenched. “Does she even know what kind of person you really are?”
“She probably thinks you’re some pure, innocent white lotus,” she mocked. “Fell head over heels for you, probably still thinking how to ‘save’ you.”
Chu Si gasped in pain, curling her lips.
Chi Yang yanked her foot free.
“My mom died when I was eight. I grew up in the cesspool that is the Chi family. Entered the entertainment industry at seventeen. Never once took a dime from Chi Qing.”
“I can let things slide, but I’ll never let anyone walk all over me.”
Chi Yang slowly bent down, leaning toward Chu Si’s ear.
“You didn’t seriously think I was forced to keep Pei Jiuyao, did you?”
Chu Si struggled to lift her head, gritting each word out:
“You only did this because I have no power or backing.”
Chi Yang straightened, frowning, then wiped roughly at the spot on her skin where Chu Si’s breath had scorched it.
“You’re just paying the price for what you did.”
“There’s one thing I’ve always wanted to ask,” Chi Yang said coldly. “Who was it that drugged me back then?”
Chu Si paused for a moment, then pulled out a grin.
“Pei Jiuyao, of course.”
“Don’t push your luck.”
Chi Yang reached for her baseball cap and put it back on.
“I’ll ask one more time—who was it?”
“You can kill me if you want, but it was still Pei Jiuyao.”
A harsh wind cut through the night, whipping up Chi Yang’s coat.
An approached and whispered by her ear, “Should we…?”
Chi Yang stared coldly at Chu Si for a few seconds, then waved her hand.
“I’m not some gangster. A little lesson is enough.”
She turned and walked toward the SUV.
Shi Nian stepped up to An and asked, “What do we do with her?”
“Destroy her gland,” An replied flatly. “Spare others from getting hurt again.”
“But didn’t Second Miss say—”
“Be gentle about it.”
Shi Nian’s eyes lit up. “Got it.”
With that, she spun her curved blade around her finger and slowly made her way toward Chu Si.
—
The first snow of early winter began to fall, silently blanketing the dark of night in a thin, quiet layer.
The world faded into a wash of white.
A single drop of blood landed in the fine sand, leaving behind a black, gaping hole.
Mo Tian stopped in front of Chu Si and nudged her stomach with her boot.
The woman on the ground stirred slowly, eyes fluttering open.
“Who the hell did this to you?”
Someone behind Mo Tian held an umbrella over her, casting half of Chu Si’s body in shadow.
“It was Chi Yang,” Chu Si rasped.
“I told you not to act on your own. You brought this on yourself.” Mo Tian said.
“But it was you who asked me to drug her…” Chu Si struggled to sit up.
Before she could finish, Mo Tian stepped on her face with the tip of her boot.
“I should’ve killed you the moment I found out you liked Pei Jiuyao,” Mo Tian hissed. “You know how much I hate my things carrying someone else’s scent.”
She crouched down, sniffed the blood on the ground, then used a gloved finger to push back Chu Si’s hair and expose the back of her neck.
“Useless trash.”
“I offended Chi Yang because of you. You can’t just abandon me now…” Chu Si’s voice was faint, her body trembling as it clung to the snow-covered ground.
“But you’re not an Alpha anymore. What use are you to me? You know I only like Alphas.”
“If Chi Yang finds out it was you who drugged her… cough!”
Chu Si didn’t finish. Mo Tian kicked her in the stomach, sending her into another fit of coughing.
