After the Nerd Marked the Top Omega - Chapter 36.1
As this sentence came out, Fang Xu and Du Xing’an immediately fell silent.
Du Xing’an looked left and right. Both people had very calm expressions, but the atmosphere carried a hint of strangeness. She couldn’t understand it.
She cleared her throat and said, “I’m going back to the office to get some documents. You two chat.”
Having said that, she slipped out, not caring whether the other two agreed or not.
Fang Xu also wanted to leave, the farther the better. But she didn’t dare, and could only try to explain her previous words: “I was just worried your friend might misunderstand.”
Pei Yunci gave a soft “Mhm.” The girl did look very much like a rabbit. She would run when she saw a colleague, deny it when she saw Pei Yunci’s friend, and was especially prone to nervousness.
She sat down next to her, her gaze falling on the white bandage wrapped around the girl’s arm, and asked, “What did the doctor say?”
Fang Xu replied, “The wound isn’t deep. If I apply the medicine on time, it will heal quickly.”
Pei Yunci: “Did you get any other checks done?”
“No,” Fang Xu could feel her concern and tried to reassure her, “I didn’t injure any other parts, so I shouldn’t need any other tests.”
When she was in high school, the street light at her community entrance was broken at night, and her arm accidentally scraped against a tricycle haphazardly parked on the street. It had a protruding metal frame and was also bloody. But after applying medicine, it healed soon after, without even leaving a scar.
Pei Yunci said faintly, “Do you know who those two people in the parking lot were?”
Her tone was a bit cold, less gentle than usual, which made Fang Xu feel somewhat unfamiliar.
She felt a bit uneasy, her fingertips unconsciously brushing the bandage: “…I know, the doctor just told me.”
Pei Yunci: “Then do you know that they have no bottom line? The blade might have been smeared with a date-rape drug, or contaminated with narcotics, or even other privately manufactured drugs. Can you afford the consequences of that?”
Fang Xu pursed her lips and remained silent.
“Scared now?”
Pei Yunci continued: “You could have called the police then, or gone to the company to find someone. But among all the solutions, you chose the most foolish one. If you had truly been fatally wounded, what about your sister?”
This was also the reason for her anger. She wasn’t just a simpleton, she was a fool.
Having been treated gently before, hearing such cold questioning now made Fang Xu feel a bit wronged. She tried her best to ignore it and said, “I was a bit anxious at the time, which is why I went over, and besides…”
Before she finished, Pei Yunci interrupted: “And besides what?”
She truly hadn’t expected the simpleton was still trying to argue.
Fang Xu bit her lip and said in a very low voice, “If I hadn’t gone over, the one who would have been hurt was you.”
Then the person who might have encountered the date-rape drug or narcotics would have been Pei Yunci.
As she said this, Fang Xu raised her eyes to look at the person in front of her.
Their eyes met, and Pei Yunci also saw the girl’s slightly red eyes.
Her heart felt as if it had been hit by a heavy stone, and for once, there was a touch of bitterness.
After a long silence, she finally spoke, her tone softening slightly: “My emotions were out of line.”
After all, the girl had helped her, yet all she did was question her when they met; it was truly inappropriate.
“It’s okay,” Fang Xu felt a stinging sensation in her nose, and the tears she was holding back started to fall again. Although she had been through a lot, she always seemed to feel easily wronged in front of Pei Yunci.
Fang Xu raised her hand to wipe her tears, unconsciously reaching with her injured arm.
Seeing this, Pei Yunci’s slightly cool fingertips pressed down on it, saying, “Don’t move.”
Fang Xu’s mind hadn’t fully reacted, but her body was already very obedient. Her moist eyes looked towards the person in front of her.
Pei Yunci took a tissue, her long eyelashes half-lowered, and seriously helped her wipe away her tears.
After realizing what was happening, Fang Xu didn’t even dare to breathe.
But the tears kept flowing without a sound, making her seem even more wronged.
Pei Yunci looked at the already damp tissue, pulled out a new one, and said, “Don’t be sad anymore.”
Her eyes were even redder than a rabbit’s.
Fang Xu was indeed sad just now, a little angry, and felt a sense of unacknowledged wrong, mixed with some fear. But now, those emotions had completely vanished.
Fang Xu parted her lips and said, “I’m fine now.”
The warm breath fell onto Pei Yunci’s palm, causing a slight tickle. Her fingertips moved slightly, and after wiping away the girl’s tears, she said, “Those two people have been sent to the police station and won’t be getting out again.”
As expected, the surveillance cameras in the parking lot had been destroyed.
But she had other evidence. With charges of attempted murder, intent to force an Omega, and other major and minor crimes, the two would spend the rest of their lives in prison.
Hearing this, Fang Xu nodded: “That’s good.”
She knew Pei Yunci had her own way of dealing with things and didn’t interfere.
Pei Yunci “Mhm”-ed and said, “In the future, in situations like this, remember not to come out so recklessly again.”
Fang Xu wasn’t very reassured: “Will you encounter this kind of thing again later?”
Who knows what she was thinking, her focus could still stray to this.
Pei Yunci said helplessly: “…No, you won’t.”
The people hired by Wei Zhou to follow her had been dealt with, but to think they would try to kidnap her directly from the company parking lot—only brainless people like him and Feng You could come up with such a thing.
After answering, she asked again, “Why did you suddenly come to the parking lot?”
Although it was a small road next to the company, it was in the opposite direction from Jiangcheng University.
Fang Xu told the truth and said, “The subway road is under construction, and I took a detour, accidentally taking a wrong turn.”
Pei Yunci asked, “Haven’t you seen any strange people recently?”
Feng You and Wei Zhou had no bottom line. If they had noticed Fang Xu before, she would have to suspect whether the two were targeting the girl.
Fang Xu recalled: “No.”
Pei Yunci “Mhm”-ed. The two had been dealt with and wouldn’t cause trouble again, but she still said, “If you see any strange people, tell me anytime.”
Fang Xu nodded.
Obedient and well-behaved, she looked very quiet, yet she dared to run over and take a knife for her without saying a word.
Pei Yunci looked at her and suddenly asked, “Being so anxious in the parking lot was also because we two are friends?”
Fang Xu was slow for a moment, then gave an “Mhm.”
Pei Yunci said slowly and deliberately, “Then you are quite good to your friends.”
For some reason, Fang Xu always felt that this sentence was very strange.
But unable to pinpoint the problem, she could only follow up with: “…Yes.”
After the bandaging was complete, Pei Yunci arranged for her to have a full body check-up. It was nearly midnight, so she directly told her to stay in the hospital: “Sleep here for now, and we’ll observe you for another day tomorrow.”
Fang Xu, holding a thick stack of examination forms, refused: “I bought a train ticket back to Yucheng. If I stay another night, I’ll miss the train.”
Pei Yunci had a private jet; missing the train meant just applying for a flight path. But she didn’t insist, asking instead, “When is the train?”
Fang Xu: “2 PM tomorrow.”
Pei Yunci: “I’ll take you.”
“…No need, I can go myself.” Fang Xu habitually refused.
Pei Yunci’s gaze fell on her arm tightly wrapped in bandages, and she asked, “Go like this?”
Fang Xu raised her right hand, which had been neglected all this time: “It’s actually fine.”
Pei Yunci didn’t waver a bit and said, “I’ll take you.”
“…Oh.”
The night was deep. Fang Xu lay on the hospital bed, yet couldn’t fall asleep. The wound didn’t hurt; she was just a bit unsettled.
One moment, she was thinking about having fallen in love with Pei Yunci—something that absolutely must not be noticed. The next, she was wondering if the other person often encountered such dangerous situations. If she hadn’t coincidentally been there, the consequences would have been unthinkable.
The more she thought about it, the more Fang Xu felt her performance during the day was inadequate; she cried out of feeling wronged after being questioned a couple of times. Pei Yunci had also almost been injured today, yet she still had to turn around and comfort her.
Next time, she must control her emotions and stop crying all the time. Fang Xu emphasized this sentence three times in her mind.
But after the emphasis, Fang Xu wondered again: after the agreement was terminated, would the two of them have another chance to meet?
After a moment of silence, she turned over.
In the room separated by only a wall, almost at the same time, Pei Yunci was also awake, half-leaning against the bedside.
A laptop was placed in front of her. The pale blue light of the screen reflected on her profile, her long eyelashes half-lowered, casting a faint shadow.
Her gaze was on the documents, but her mind was still on what the girl had said during the day.
“Just as normal friends.”
Was she that good to all her friends, or was she lying?
The next day, Pei Yunci drove, first taking the girl to Jiangcheng University to pick up her luggage, and then taking her to the station.
Seeing her about to help with the suitcase, Fang Xu quickly used her uninjured hand to help steady it: “It’s fine to just drop me off here.”
Pei Yunci “Mhm”-ed, looked at her and said, “Have a good New Year.”
Fang Xu curved her lips: “You too.”
Pei Yunci checked the time and said, “Go on inside.”
Fang Xu nodded and pulled the suitcase inside. Only when she was about to enter the gate did she turn her head.
Pei Yunci was still standing in the same spot.
The two looked at each other from a distance. Fang Xu’s heart, for some unknown reason, suddenly beat a little faster.
She waved at the person, and then entered the station.
When she arrived in Yucheng in the evening, Fang Xu realized that it was actually snowing on her side of town.
Snowflakes scattered from the sky, turning the ground into a blanket of silver-white. When stepped on, they made a “shasha” sound, soft and clean.
Fang Xu opened the door. Hearing the sound, Yiyi immediately ran to the entrance, taking the suitcase from her hand: “Sis, you’re finally back!”
Seeing the child about to hug her arm, Fang Xu dodged slightly and proactively explained: “I accidentally bumped into something on the way home from work and got a little hurt.”
“What happened?”
Hearing this, Yiyi didn’t care about anything else. She instantly withdrew her hand and asked worriedly: “Is it serious? When did you get hurt? Sis, I didn’t touch it just now, did I? Does it hurt? Should we go to the hospital now?”
With several questions bombarding her, Fang Xu answered them one by one: “It’s not serious, I got hurt yesterday, you didn’t touch it, it doesn’t hurt, I’ve already changed the dressing, and there’s no need to go to the hospital.”
“Seriously?” Yiyi was still worried: “Let me see.”
“Okay,” Fang Xu took off her down jacket and hung it on the rack, guiding her inside: “Don’t talk standing in the doorway.”
Seeing the wrapped gauze, Yiyi wanted to touch it but didn’t dare: “Sis, if you need to pick up anything during this time, just call me, and I’ll help you.”
Fang Xu smiled: “Okay. Have you eaten yet?”
Yiyi shook her head: “Not yet. I wanted to wait for you to come back and eat together.”
She had bought quite a few things at the supermarket yesterday, and asked: “Sis, what do you want to eat? I’ll make it.”
“Instant noodles, I guess.” Fang Xu said.
“How about something else?” Yiyi disagreed: “You’re still hurt. You should eat something nutritious.”
“Just this,” Fang Xu looked at the child and said: “I haven’t eaten it in a while, and I’m craving it.”
Yiyi grumbled twice, but still agreed: “I’ll go cook it now.”
Cooking instant noodles was simple, and Fang Xu didn’t need to help. She said, “Then I’ll just wait to eat.”
“Alright,” Yiyi walked towards the kitchen, not being humble at all: “My instant noodles taste better than anyone else’s.”
Fang Xu smiled and looked down to send a message to Pei Yunci.
[Fang Xu: I’ve arrived home.]
[Pei Yunci: Good.]
Fang Xu wanted to chat more, but couldn’t think of anything else to talk about, so she could only close the chat window.
In the following days, the New Year atmosphere grew stronger.
Lanterns were hung everywhere on the streets by shops, and there were many red paper-cuttings.
Fang Xu and Yiyi took advantage of the supermarket still being open to buy Spring Festival couplets, New Year fruits, vegetables, and a lot of meat.
Since they didn’t have a car, the two made two round trips before they finished most of their shopping.
Coming out for the third time, Yiyi was still wondering if they had missed anything: “Sis, do we still have the cake-making tools at home?”
“Yes,” Fang Xu’s memory was excellent: “I put last year’s away in the cabinet.”
“Let’s go back and find them,” Yiyi wandered around the supermarket with her, buying a lot of snacks.
After checking out, Yiyi looked at the four packaged bags and was a little unsure: “Sis, can we finish all of this?”
“Put on your gloves and scarf,” Fang Xu reminded her, and then said, “It’s fine if we don’t finish it all; we can just keep it.”
Yiyi nodded, then couldn’t help but sneeze before saying what she wanted to say: “It’s too cold. Let’s not go out too much. This kind of weather is better for cozying up at home.”
Standing outside for a little while, the cold air could find a gap and drill its way into their clothes.
Fang Xu agreed: “Walk on the side, there are cars passing by.”
“I know,” Yiyi deliberately squeezed next to her, leaning in affectionately, still mindful of her injury: “Sis, should we swap? This bag has potato chips and is lighter.”
“It’s fine,” Fang Xu said: “I feel almost completely better. I can take the gauze off when we get back.”
When she was injured, blood seeped out of the wound, making it hard to see clearly. Coupled with Pei Yunci’s cool demeanor, even the doctor mistakenly thought it was serious. But the wound was actually not deep, just a slice on her forearm from the tip of the blade.
The wound felt itchy the past two days as it was scabbing over, and now it was almost completely healed.
Hearing this, Yiyi was very happy: “Sis, walk faster, let’s hurry home.”
Soon, the two created a distance between them. Fang Xu still walked unhurriedly and called out to the child ahead: “Slow down, there’s snow on the ground, don’t fall.”
Don’t let her arm just heal only for the child to fall and hurt her leg.
“Mhm! Mmm!” Yiyi stood still, waiting for her, and looked up at the sky: “Sis, it looks like it’s snowing again.”
The tiny snowflakes were like fine willow catkins, occasionally falling on her sleeve, becoming specks of white, only to melt and disappear a moment later.
Fang Xu reached her side and said, “Let’s go, let’s hurry back.”
