- Chapter 19 - Who Doesn't Like a Beautiful Older Sister?
The assistant also heard. After she and Fang Xu helped the person into the room, she prepared to leave.
Fang Xu asked, “Aren’t you going to rest for a bit?”
The assistant smiled, “No need to trouble Miss Fang. I have other things to attend to.”
She had originally intended to come along because she was worried about Pei Yunci. After all, her gland condition was still unstable, and accidents could easily happen during this time.
But now that she had heard Pei Yunci say she wanted to stay here herself, there was no need to wait around.
Having worked together for many years, the assistant understood her. Even when drunk, Pei Yunci maintained a sense of caution and wouldn’t allow someone she suspected to be close by.
“Alright, I’ll message you when Yunci wakes up.”
After seeing the assistant off, Fang Xu first went back to the room to release some pheromones. Only after seeing Pei Yunci’s furrowed brow gradually relax did she feel a little more at ease. She then cleaned the pheromones off herself and tightly closed the door.
Returning to the living room, Fang Yi was staring at her intently: “Sister, who is the person in your room?”
How did you go out and bring an extra person back?
“A friend,” Fang Xu said simply.
“Did you meet her at Jiangcheng University?”
“Yes, we just met recently. Don’t think too much about it.”
“I won’t think too much,” Fang Yi remembered her sister had just broken up, “I just think Sister’s friend is so beautiful.”
The words of a child are the most sincere, and Fang Xu also smiled.
They both busied themselves for a while. Fang Xu looked at the time and asked, “Yi Yi, do you want to come grocery shopping with me?”
“Yes!” Fang Yi immediately closed her workbook and said, “Let’s buy more and have Sister’s friend stay for dinner too.”
“Oh right, Sister, what’s your friend’s name?”
“Pei Yunci,” Fang Xu replied.
“That’s such a nice name.”
“Mhm.”
Fang Xu went into the room to check, topped up the pheromones, placed the inhibitor next to the bed in the most conspicuous spot, and after confirming everything was fine, she and her sister left the house.
A headache.
Pei Yunci pressed her forehead. When she sat up, she realized her surroundings were completely unfamiliar.
She was covered by a light yellow blanket, and next to the pillow was even a doll wearing glasses.
The bedroom wasn’t large, but it was clean and tidy. It was clear that the owner of the room was an organized person.
Beside the bed was a waist-high bookshelf, packed with various books, most of which showed signs of being read. A photo was placed on the very top. Two gently smiling women, each holding two children in their arms.
Pei Yunci was not someone who blacked out when drinking. After a while, she understood what had happened.
She touched her gland. The shallow pain was completely gone, and she could still smell a faint citrus fragrance in the bedroom.
Pei Yunci came out of the bedroom. Not seeing anyone, she first sent a message to her assistant, and then started dealing with the emails in her inbox.
A little later, sounds came from the doorway.
“Sister, can we finish all this if we buy so much?”
“I’m not asking you to finish it all at once. Save some for later.”
Fang Yi walked in front. Seeing the person in the living room, she blurted out, “Wow, Sister Pei, you’re awake!”
“Yes, hello.” Pei Yunci greeted her as well.
Her gaze then shifted slightly, falling upon Fang Xu: “Thank you for the trouble earlier today.”
Five or six hours had already passed since she got drunk.
“No trouble, no trouble at all, Sister Pei! We’re having hot pot tonight, you absolutely must stay!” Fang Yi answered for her immediately.
Fang Xu put the groceries in the kitchen, then walked over and poured some warm water: “If you still have work, you can deal with it first.”
“I’m done with work,” Pei Yunci said, “If you don’t mind, may I trouble you for a little longer?”
“Of course we don’t mind!” Fang Yi said with a smile.
Pei Yunci also went to the side of the kitchen. “Is there anything I can do?”
Since the younger ones were helping with the cooking, she wouldn’t just stand by and wait.
Fang Xu divided some vegetables for Fang Yi and Pei Yunci: “Help me wash these.”
With the water running huala-huala, it didn’t take long for Fang Yi to become completely familiar with Pei Yunci and start chatting with her.
After washing the vegetables, Fang Yi wanted to say something more, but a notification sound rang from the tablet in the living room. Before she could even dry her hands, she ran over.
Pei Yunci asked the person next to her, “Whose message is it?”
Fang Xu: “…Probably her crush.”
If she didn’t know the inside story, she would probably be confused too.
Pei Yunci understood, a slight smile touching her lips, “Such a child, indeed.”
With her sister still replying to messages in the living room, Fang Xu withdrew her gaze, lowering her voice to ask, “Is your body okay? Do you need a mark?”
“Not for the moment,” Pei Yunci put down the washed greens. “And…”
Her voice paused here.
Fang Xu prompted, “What?”
“Your sister is still here.”
“…”
Fang Xu also became aware of this fact, and a blush quietly crept up her neck.
She coughed and said, “It’s good that your body is fine.”
Pei Yunci looked at the person next to her whose ears were completely red. She was a little suspicious that if she said she needed a mark, the other party would obediently go to a hotel with her.
The more someone was like this, the more one wanted to tease them.
When this thought emerged, Pei Yunci reflected on herself, collecting all these notions.
Indeed, having been able to fight wits and courage against the Pei family members for so many years, she was no good person either.
“It’s fine, the alcohol just had a slight effect,” Pei Yunci ultimately did not bully the good student.
Hearing this, Fang Xu was relieved.
She was about to say something more when the person who came in interrupted: “Sister, what are you and Sister Pei talking about?”
Fang Xu was much more natural in front of her sister: “Why don’t you guess?”
“How could I guess?” Fang Yi, thinking of her own recent chat, conspicuously changed the subject, “Sister, how should I prepare the tripe?”
“I’ll do it,” Fang Xu took it over, “You go put the other vegetables on plates with Sister Pei.”
Making hot pot at home wasn’t too much trouble—just preparing the ingredients and mixing the base soup.
The three people divided the labor and busied themselves.
Fang Yi loved this lively atmosphere and became more talkative. She casually asked, “Sister, why are you calling her Sister Pei too?”
Fang Xu’s hand, which was washing the tripe, paused. She looked up and met the gaze of Pei Yunci, who was a short distance away.
“…Did I?”
“Of course you did,” the child didn’t dwell on it, smiling, “Maybe I influenced you, Sister.”
Pei Yunci’s gaze shifted slightly, and she spoke first: “Xiao Xu can call me that too if she wants.”
Fang Yi chimed in to stir things up: “Sister Pei, you’re so good to my sister.”
Inexplicably, she felt that the sentence sounded a little bit indulgent.
Fang Xu: “…”
Her already flushed face felt even hotter.
She coughed and changed the subject: “Yi Yi, cut the tofu skin.”
“Okay, Sister,” Fang Yi didn’t notice anything, turned around, and resumed chatting: “Sister Pei, are you working in Jiangcheng now?”
“Yes, I am.”
…
With three people working simultaneously, the speed was much faster.
After nearly half an hour, the ingredients were ready. Steam was rising from the pot, which had both spicy and tomato bases, and the dining table area was shrouded in moisture.
Fang Yi had barely sat down for two seconds when she suddenly stood up, ran to the fridge, and grabbed something: “Sister, Sister Pei, drinks!”
“Thank you.” Pei Yunci took it, her fingertip hooking the pull tab.
Fang Xu took hers. Her gaze swept over, and she realized the drink in Pei Yunci’s hand was orange-flavored.
Her finger moved slightly, and she asked, “Do you want to switch to a room-temperature one?”
“No need,” Pei Yunci had already opened the drink, “This can is quite nice.”
Fang Yi also nodded: “Exactly, hot pot must be paired with ice-cold drinks.”
“If your stomach hurts, you’ll have to bear it yourself,” Fang Xu patted her head.
“Sister, if I don’t grow taller, I’ll go complain to Mom!”
Their deceased mother was not a forbidden topic between them. On the contrary, whenever they encountered something, they would mention their two mothers, as if they were accompanying them in their growth.
“Mhm, go ahead.” Fang Xu lowered her head slightly. Her glasses met the hot steam and fogged up.
Her vision briefly turned white. Before Fang Xu could move, Pei Yunci next to her handed over a tissue: “Here.”
“Thank you.” Fang Xu took it, removed her glasses, and being unable to see clearly, she said softly, “I don’t come back often, so Yi Yi is very happy today.”
The latter half of the sentence wasn’t explicitly stated, but Pei Yunci could guess the underlying meaning: I hope you don’t mind if she was presumptuous.
“Sister, even though your voice was low, I heard everything,” Fang Yi said faintly.
She didn’t look at all like the aloof, top student she was at school.
Pei Yunci chuckled, saying, “It’s fine. Yi Yi is very cute.”
The atmosphere was completely different from that of the Pei family, and it was very relaxing.
Fang Yi nodded, acting spoiled: “Sister Pei, you’re the best.”
…
The hot pot meal lasted for nearly two hours.
The younger sister was a bit full. After chatting in the living room for a while to digest, she went back to her room to chat with her classmates.
Fang Xu looked at the time and asked the person next to her, “Are you going back now?”
“You just drank alcohol this afternoon, you should ask your driver or assistant to pick you up.”
Pei Yunci hummed, “When are you returning to Jiangcheng?”
“Tomorrow,” Fang Xu replied, “The school holiday is only three days long.”
Moreover, after the Qingming Festival holiday, she had two more internship interviews.
“I’m also returning tomorrow. Do you need me to book a plane ticket for you?” Pei Yunci asked.
Fang Xu smiled: “No need. I already booked a return train ticket when I was in Jiangcheng.”
Train tickets are hard to get during the holidays, and she had to set an alarm to snag one.
However, it was normal that Pei Yunci wouldn’t know about such things.
“Alright,” Pei Yunci nodded and then made a call to her driver.
After stating her location, she turned back to Fang Xu and asked, “Earlier in the kitchen, was there something you wanted to say?”
Fang Xu thought for a moment, knowing what she was referring to.
“It was nothing, just… I saw your trending search this morning. I hope it won’t cause any trouble?”
“What trending search?”
Fang Xu found the previous screenshot: “It’s gone now, though.”
Scanning the content, Pei Yunci lifted her long eyelashes: “These trending searches happen often.”
Since they couldn’t shake the Pei Corporation, they could only resort to such low-level tactics, and it would pop up once every few days.
“Ah?” Fang Xu didn’t quite understand the situation, but still said, “It’s alright. The content of those searches is clearly false. Any sensible person wouldn’t believe it, so there’s no need to be upset over something like this.”
Pei Yunci hummed, “You’re right.”
Fang Xu still felt that those who spread rumors were hateful, so she added, “But if you ever feel troubled by it, you can always find me.”
“Give me a photo,” Pei Yunci suddenly said.
Fang Xu met her gaze, momentarily bewildered: “Huh?”
Pei Yunci chuckled, “I really liked the photo you took last time I saw it.”
“So, if I’m troubled, can I ask for a photo taken by you?”
Receiving her answer, the worry that Fang Xu had lifted quietly faded away: “Of course.”
A little while later, the driver arrived. She walked him downstairs, watched the car leave, and then returned home.
Fang Yi was in the living room, still a little reluctant: “Will Sister Pei come again later?”
“Not necessarily. She’s very busy with work,” Fang Xu stated truthfully.
She was in charge of the Pei Corporation, always on the go. Her visit today was a combination of coincidence and accident. It was unlikely she would come a second time.
However, she didn’t say this directly, leaving a little hope for her sister.
“Oh, I see…” Fang Yi was still somewhat reluctant. She sat up straight and said, “Sister, if Sister Pei comes to Yucheng next time, you absolutely must bring her home!”
Fang Xu nodded: “You like her a lot?”
“Who doesn’t like a beautiful older sister,” Fang Yi joked, “Right, Sister?”
She could tell that her sister and Pei Yunci had a good relationship, always standing together and whispering to each other.
“…Yes.”
Fang Xu also smiled.
