Chapter 80: Lewd Words
When Tao Ning woke up, his head was heavy and he couldn’t think. He raised his hand and found a needle in the back of it, with a long IV tube hanging from a bag of liquid. He didn’t even have a chance to wonder what was wrong with him.
With a “click,” the bedroom door opened.
A cold, lifeless gaze swept over him, and a tiny bit of light flickered in Song Yucong’s narrow phoenix eyes when he saw Tao Ning’s sleepy, dazed expression. Song Yucong’s face was very pale. He was dressed in a black suit with a white paper chrysanthemum pinned to his left lapel. He strode over to the bedside, followed by the family doctor.
“Check him again.”
“Yes, young master.”
Because Tao Ning was often ill, the family doctor was already very familiar with his condition. He first replaced the IV bag and then took instruments from his medical bag to check Tao Ning’s temperature, heart, and lung function.
The cold instrument touching his warm skin made Tao Ning flinch. Song Yucong frowned and said, “Be gentler. You’re hurting him.”
The doctor: “…” It was just a check-up; how could it hurt? But he was just an employee getting paid to do his job, so when his superior told him to be gentler, his movements became even more so.
However, the doctor didn’t expect that the notoriously ill-tempered Second Young Master Song would ever be so considerate of someone. He guessed he must have matured a lot overnight after his closest relative passed away.
After the examination was complete, the doctor told Song Yucong, “His fever hasn’t gone down yet. He needs to be observed for another night. If he still has a fever tomorrow, he must be transferred to the hospital.” He also gave instructions about eating bland food, avoiding anything too hot or too cold, and not having any major emotional ups and downs before leaving with his medical bag.
But Tao Ning knew that avoiding major emotional ups and downs would be impossible. Whenever he thought of Madam Song’s death, he felt miserable. Madam Song’s beautiful, smiling face felt like it was just yesterday. When he first arrived at the Song family, he was completely at a loss, carrying heavy luggage from head to toe.
Only Madam Song had taken his hand. The woman’s soft skin made Tao Ning involuntarily think of his elder sister, and the awkwardness in his heart was gradually soothed… But accidents always came too quickly.
For the first time, Tao Ning felt that the Song family’s grand and beautiful villa was a prison crawling with lice, its exterior glamorous but its interior long decayed.
“Bumpkin, sleep with me for a bit.”
A low, hoarse voice brought Tao Ning’s thoughts back. He looked at the tall man in front of him. His pale, handsome face was full of awkward emotions, but the vulnerability and longing in his eyes were almost overflowing.
It was as if he was saying that if Tao Ning didn’t agree, didn’t hold him, he would become a butterfly just like his mother and fall from the top of this extravagant cage the next second.
This thought startled Tao Ning. “…Okay.” His voice was hoarse and broken.
Song Yucong frowned, turned to pour a cup of warm water, and came back to see the young man lying obediently on the bed, with both hands stretched out in a posture of wanting a hug.
Unexpectedly, the man only noticed the bruises on the back of his hand. His large, slender hand grabbed Tao Ning’s wrist where the needle was. “What are you moving around for?”
I wanted to give you a hug, Tao Ning grumbled inwardly. He could only blame Song Yucong for being too dense to understand. He was pulled into the man’s arms, and a slightly cool glass touched his lips.
Like a parched land receiving rain after a long drought, the young man drank a bit too eagerly. But the man, who was used to a life of luxury, was not only dense but also very clumsy at serving people. His movements were rough, and most of the water trickled down Tao Ning’s lean, pale collarbone into his pajamas.
“Cough, cough, cough…” Tao Ning choked and pushed Song Yucong away. The words of complaint were on the tip of his tongue, but when he saw the dark circles under his eyes, he couldn’t say them.
The man, however, said with a sullen face, “You can even choke while drinking water. Are you a three-year-old child?”
Though he said that, his movements were frantic. Song Yucong called a servant to bring a clean pair of pajamas, then lowered his head to wipe away the water Tao Ning had choked on.
Tao Ning stared blankly at the man’s lowered gaze, his expression awkward but very serious, and his cautious demeanor carried a hint of subtle flattery, as if he would be abandoned if he didn’t do so.
Tao Ning felt an unconscious pang of heartache. The man’s white tie still carried the faint scent of calm wood from when they first met. It was a very light scent, yet it unconsciously blended with the sweet lemon scent on Tao Ning’s body, becoming inseparable.
Song Yucong was worried Tao Ning would catch a chill. He unbuttoned his pajamas to change them, when a soft hand suddenly hooked around his neck. The force was very light, accompanied by a soothing, fruity scent.
“Don’t move around.” Song Yucong scolded in a low voice.
However, with a gentle pull from Tao Ning, the tall man fell onto him. Feeling his body stiffen, Tao Ning patted Song Yucong’s back with his hand that didn’t have a needle and said softly, “Song Yucong, thank you. Don’t be sad… I’ll stay with you.”
I’ll stay with you.
Tao Ning couldn’t see the man’s expression, but he heard the sound of his breathing near his ear. After he said those words, the man’s breathing noticeably hitched and became slightly rapid. Then, after an unknown amount of time, a cool liquid dropped onto his neck, like raindrops, one by one, settling in Tao Ning’s heart.
Song Yucong closed his eyes tightly, clutching the person in his arms. Countless chaotic images flashed before his eyes: his blood-covered mother, the guests’ fake condolences, the dead silence in the mourning hall… It was as if he had returned to many years ago, when he was powerless and huddled in the dark solitary room.
He cried out, begging for someone to save him, but no one cared.
Until the young man’s beautiful, gentle eyes appeared, took his hand, hugged him, and said he would stay with him. The soft, gentle voice extinguished a flame of anger and despair that had been burning for over a decade.
At this very moment, he finally felt that he was alive and loved by someone.
Tao Ning felt the crying gradually subside and secretly let out a sigh of relief. He had been very worried about Song Yucong’s initial calmness, because things tend to turn to their opposite. If a string is taut for too long, it will snap at the slightest disturbance.
People are the same. If too many emotions are suppressed without being released, they will break down.
After a long while, the arms wrapped around his waist tightened. Tao Ning heard the person by his ear say fiercely, “You’re not allowed to tell anyone.”
With his eyes curved in a smile, Tao Ning said, “I’m going to tell someone.”
In a flash, the man who had just been holding him raised his head and glared, a tear still clinging to the corner of his eye. “You dare?”
“I dare.”
Song Yucong gritted his teeth, realizing this bumpkin was getting less and less afraid of him. He now had a look of complete confidence.
He was clearly just a rustic, simple-minded country bumpkin, but those beautiful eyes were curved like a crescent moon, staring at him brazenly.
His heart started beating uncontrollably again. Song Yucong felt his throat tighten and his ears burn. His mind went blank. He simply covered Tao Ning’s alluring eyes and said menacingly, “You have a lot of nerve.”
“Mmm.”
Tao Ning pulled his hands away, thought for a moment, and then said, “You poked me. It’s uncomfortable.”
When the young man said this, he looked so pure and innocent, his light brown pupils clean and clear. He was so straightforward that he didn’t seem to realize that his words could make a man feel completely flustered.
Song Yucong felt like smoke was about to come out of his head. He jumped up as if scalded by those words, almost falling to the floor as he backed away. After a long time, he said with a flushed face and red ears, “…You, where did you learn such lewd words!”
