Chapter 78: A Fallen Butterfly
From returning to the bedroom to half-reclining on the bed, Tao Ning didn’t say a word. The family doctor checked him with instruments and left after saying there were no major problems and to remember to take his medication on time.
Song Yucong’s tense expression relaxed. “Hey, bumpkin? Why aren’t you talking?” However, the person on the bed was still lost in thought, his eyes vacant, ignoring him.
His face instantly darkened. Song Yucong kicked the side of the bed with a “bang,” which jolted Tao Ning back to the present.
Those eyes, shrouded in a thin mist, looked over, staring motionlessly at Song Yucong’s face as if seeing him for the first time.
“What are you looking at?” Under Tao Ning’s almost direct gaze, Song Yucong’s ears flushed unnaturally. He glared, “Keep looking and I… I’ll…”
His gaze fell on the comforter covering Tao Ning. “I’ll smother you with the comforter!”
Tao Ning ignored his childishness and asked seriously, “Is Song Heng your biological brother? I mean, a brother with the same parents, a full sibling?”
Song Yucong frowned. “Why are you asking that?” His face was dark. “Are you secretly interested in him? Or have you gotten together with him behind my back?”
Whenever another man’s name came out of Tao Ning’s mouth, an unwarranted rage would ignite in Song Yucong’s heart, completely beyond his control.
Even for a good-tempered person like Tao Ning, he sometimes truly wanted to pry open Song Yucong’s head and see what was constantly filling it.
It seemed that in Song Yucong’s eyes, every man in the world was somehow involved with him. He probably thought that if Tao Ning mentioned a male ant, Song Yucong would believe that ant liked him.
“No.” Tao Ning said stiffly. He didn’t want to talk to Song Yucong anymore and decided to ask someone else. “Where did Ah Yun go? I haven’t seen Ah Yun since we got out of the car.”
Song Yucong’s expression was a little strange. “I told him to pack his bags and scram.”
Meaning he had fired Ah Yun. Tao Ning’s movement to get out of bed paused, and his delicate brows furrowed: “Why? Ah Yun is a very nice person. Did he do something wrong…”
“Tao Ning, are you uncomfortable if you don’t mention other men?” Song Yucong’s temper instantly flared, and his jealousy spilled over completely. He couldn’t stand hearing Tao Ning mention any other man’s name. No one’s.
In the few months since coming to Haizhou, Tao Ning had not only broadened his horizons but also developed a slight temper from being spoiled. He was no longer afraid of Song Yucong. Moreover, he was currently anxious and preoccupied, desperately wanting to verify something.
So, he retorted sharply, “Why are you so annoying? You use your power to bully others, you’re domineering and selfish, and when I ask you a question, you always drag it back to that topic. Aren’t you bothersome?”
Bothersome—aren’t you bothersome?
This was the first time Tao Ning had spoken with such a heavy tone. The three words “aren’t you bothersome” kept echoing in Song Yucong’s ears. His face visibly paled, until it was as white as paper, and his lips even trembled slightly.
But the next second, Song Yucong’s eyes quickly turned bloodshot. His hands, like iron clamps, gripped Tao Ning’s shoulders. His hot, scalding breath sprayed onto Tao Ning’s face.
“You’re yelling at me for him?!” His furious roar shook the entire bedroom. “You dare to yell at me for a servant?!”
Tao Ning contained his anger and struggled, “Let go.”
But the man in front of him was completely out of control. Not only did he not let go, but he squeezed even harder, his vicious gaze seeming to want to devour him alive.
He suddenly gave a cold laugh. “Right, I almost forgot. You and he are the same kind, not only effeminate but also poor. Only trash like you can get involved with a lowly servant…”
Before, Tao Ning considered Song Yucong a mission target and could tolerate his hurtful words. Now, however, for no clear reason, he could no longer stand them, because these words stung him like poisoned darts.
“Slap!”
The crisp sound dropped the already tense atmosphere to freezing point. The man’s head snapped sideways, as if a bucket of cold water had instantly extinguished his irrational fury. His back slumped, and he remained silent for a long time, maintaining a stiff posture.
“I’m sorry.” Tao Ning instantly felt guilt and felt he was also at fault. Knowing that Song Yucong might have a psychological disorder because of his past, he should have been more patient when talking to him. He said in a panic, “Does it hurt? Let me see.”
The hand that reached out to touch his cheek was slapped away. The man kept his head down, refusing to look at Tao Ning. “…Get out.”
“Song Yucong…”
“Get out! I told you to get out! Go away!”
Song Yucong roared as he retreated, his face contorted. His tall body began to tremble violently, like a trapped beast being forced back into its cage by its owner.
Seeing him like this, a sudden, inexplicable pain swelled in Tao Ning’s heart. He could only use a soft voice to comfort him: “I’m leaving now. You need to calm down.”
He put on his shoes, intending to go out and find a doctor, but before he even reached the bedroom door, there was a loud “boom!” A sound of a giant object crashing to the ground came from behind him.
Tao Ning spun around abruptly. He saw Song Yucong curled up on the floor, his lips trembling. His bloodshot eyes were fixed on Tao Ning with a look of both hatred and obsession, as if if Tao Ning left, he would literally drown in water.
Even though there was no pool in this bedroom.
Tao Ning was startled and rushed forward. “Where did you fall? Song Yucong, can you still hear me?”
Tao Ning was so scared he was incoherent. He wanted to help him up, but he was too small and couldn’t lift him.
The person lying on the floor tightly clenched his hand, his voice trembling as he said, “You… you get out… I don’t want you… you get out…”
What time was this? And he was still so stubborn! Tao Ning was furious and had no choice but to shout for help.
Fortunately, a servant was just outside the bedroom, bringing snacks. Hearing the noise, they rushed in, saw the trembling Song Yucong on the floor, were so frightened they nearly dropped the plate in their hands, and hurriedly called an ambulance. The scene descended into chaos.
Downstairs in the study, smash! crash!
Everything in the study was smashed to pieces: expensive porcelain, a vase containing withered flower buds, a childish coffee mug carved with a portrait…
Finally, there was the dust-covered wedding photo in the corner. The woman in the photo was smiling like a flower, her seaweed-like hair tied into a princess bun. A white veil rested quietly over her happy eyes, like a silvery galaxy.
Until cracks crawled across her beautiful face, she remained still, gazing through the shattered glass at her twenty-years-later self in the study.
The woman’s bare feet stepped on the broken porcelain shards. Scarlet blood instantly welled up, but she seemed not to feel the pain. She was wearing the red xiuhe wedding dress from her bridal procession. The exquisite, sparkling pearls on the dress jingled with her frantic movements.
“That’s enough, Wu Yue!”
“Not enough! Not enough!!”
The hoarse shriek contorted her face. Madam Song gasped for air, her bloodshot eyes looking both like she was crying and laughing. It seemed as if she was dominating the man in front of her with her voice, or perhaps her voice had successfully drawn the man’s attention, which made her happy.
She shed a tear. “…You always say I’m crazy, Song Rongguo…” At this, she choked slightly. “You never used to be harsh with me… Did you forget?”
Song Rongguo’s face was full of impatience, even the fine lines around his eyes were filled with disgust. He took a few deep breaths. Seeing the fresh blood on her feet, his heart twitched slightly.
He suddenly recalled many years ago when the woman, imitating movie scenes, clumsily embroidered a mandarin duck purse for him but accidentally pricked her finger. Only a single drop of blood fell, yet she cried and acted spoiled, saying it hurt so much, and he had to coax her for several days.
But these images only flashed through his mind.
Soon, Song Rongguo felt completely indifferent. Even though he knew that as long as he showed a look of concern, this stupid woman would do anything for him.
But now, he didn’t even want to pretend. “Stop dragging up all that old history. Aren’t you ashamed, Wu Yue? You must be forty-five or forty-six now, right? Do you think you’re still some seventeen or eighteen-year-old girl? Recognize your place. Stop acting like a shrew at every turn, and wearing this dress out—aren’t you embarrassed…”
“Don’t you love me anymore?” The woman looked at him as if she hadn’t heard what he said, her eyes filled with tears.
Song Rongguo thought she had completely lost her mind and snapped, “Is agonizing over these questions meaningful? You already know! I was with you for your family’s money. Now, we live separate lives, and we can still maintain some dignity for the rest of our lives.”
“Then do you love me?”
“Wu…”
“Tell me!!” Madam Song shrieked, interrupting him incoherently. “Say it, you said you loved me! Say it!”
Song Rongguo coldly watched her scream, and finally, he mocked, “Lunatic.”
He turned to leave but was grabbed by the woman. The person behind him cried, “You love me, don’t you, Song Rongguo? You love me…”
Her sharp, untrimmed fingernails dug into his flesh. Song Rongguo’s arm felt a stinging pain. He thought about the past few days, being frantic and stressed, with the police coming three times and a pile of things waiting for him to handle, and yet there was a madwoman at home not giving him a moment of peace. The stinging pain snapped his last remaining nerve.
Finally unable to bear it, Song Rongguo turned around and slapped her across the face. The heavy slap sent the woman crashing to the ground, her dry, long hair scattered, concealing her entire expression.
“Are you done or not?!” Song Rongguo roared furiously. “Have some shame, Wu Yue! Fine, since you want me to say it myself, then I’ll tell you—”
“I, Song Rongguo, never loved you from beginning to end! I have only ever used you!”
The woman lowered her head, silent.
The study was so quiet you could hear a pin drop. Song Rongguo’s anger subsided. He asked coldly, “Stop mentioning those things. I’ll ask you one more time, where is the will your father left for Song Yucong?”
The woman remained silent.
Finally, only the sound of a heavy door slamming shut remained in the study.
Downstairs, the piercing siren of the ambulance echoed through the entire villa. Tao Ning and the servants helped the trembling Song Yucong slowly walk toward the door.
From the bedroom to downstairs, Song Yucong’s mouth only uttered the word “get out,” but his hand tightly gripped Tao Ning’s wrist, refusing to let go, as if he were his only lifeline.
Just as the group reached the doorway—a loud “BAM!”
A red shadow descended from the sky, like a vibrant butterfly plummeting to the ground. In an instant, crimson blood bloomed like a flower, like scorching magma, pulling everyone into endless death.
“Ahhh! Someone’s dead!!!”
“Madam—!”
“Song Yucong!”
“Someone! Someone’s dead!!”
A few drops of warm blood splashed onto Song Yucong’s face, sliding down like tears. His whole body was rigid, as if he couldn’t move. He could only hear the chaotic, distorted screams around him.
The woman’s blood-soaked eyes, lifeless yet gentle, gazed at his weeping eyes.
