Chapter 61: Devouring Alive
All the way, Song Yucong talks nonstop, relentlessly questioning Tao Ning about his relationship with Zhao Jingqun. The answers he gets are always “cousin,” “just my cousin,” “there’s no other relationship,” and so on.
Feeling the person holding him tremble slightly, Tao Ning tries to follow along with what he says and not provoke him. Once they get to the hospital, Song Yucong’s condition is much better. When he goes in to have his wound treated, he turns around and says fiercely, “Don’t you dare leave.”
Tao Ning sits on the chair outside, and “Mhm”s in response.
But he didn’t take his medicine when he went out and played in the water for a long time. Tao Ning leans against the chair and suddenly feels a chill all over his body. A wave of coldness goes straight from his toes to his head. He frowns, hugs himself, and falls asleep.
His consciousness sinks from a coma into chaotic darkness. All his senses seem to have disappeared, and he is surrounded by endless night. Tao Ning stands in the darkness, confused, and takes a step forward.
…Where is this?
“Unit 510 has no conscious reaction. Should we send it to the scrapyard for destruction?”
“What a shame for this body. We spent a fortune to make it.”
“…Wait… its heartbeat is fluctuating.”
“Interesting.”
Who? Who is speaking?
An unknown fear and a coldness as if he is in a world of ice and snow袭 hit him at the same time. Tao Ning feels it’s hard to breathe. The chaotic voices in the darkness are suddenly scattered by a commotion. He hears Song Yucong’s roar, Zhao Jingqun’s cold chuckle… and a familiar voice that overlaps with the one in the darkness.
…Who is he?
And who… am I?
Tao Ning wants to run away. The boundless darkness frightens him. He wants a pair of eyes to see the road ahead. He trembles all over, shivering in the darkness. Until he falls into a warm embrace, someone takes off the clothes that are clinging to his body. Then, a pair of dry lips with the scent of tobacco piously kiss his cheeks, one by one.
That person holds him and coaxes him. “I’m here, I’m right here. Be good… don’t be afraid, my sweet boy.”
Then he starts humming a song. The hoarse voice softly hums a nursery rhyme, holding him and swaying like a rocking car. Tao Ning has heard it before. It is said that when a child has a nightmare, singing this nursery rhyme can dispel the nightmare and protect the child from being bothered by bad dreams.
Tao Ning falls into a deep sleep in the gentle, soft whispers. When he opens his eyes again, he sees Zhao Jingqun’s slightly reddened eyes. Seeing that he is awake, Zhao Jingqun pulls at his tense collar and lets out a long sigh of relief.
Before he can even figure out where he is, Tao Ning’s forehead is gently scratched by a rough hand. When Zhao Jingqun is not smiling, he looks sinister and ruthless, as if he is being stared at by a bloodthirsty lone wolf. He closes his eyes, probably knowing that he looks fierce when he’s not smiling. He wants to make himself look a little gentler, but he is probably so angry that he can’t force a smile. He says with a straight face, “Tao Ning.”
The young man who is called by his name is completely oblivious. He looks over blankly. His limbs are weak, and his head is a little dizzy.
Seeing the young man’s state, Zhao Jingqun instantly softens. He can only blame himself for not watching him, for letting him leave his sight. It is all his fault that the young man got sick. He sighs, gently stroking the young man’s soft hair, his throat dry. “You had a fever of 39 degrees. You almost scared your husband to death.”
The man then scratches Tao Ning’s slightly damp nose. “You can never play in the water again, do you understand?”
Only then does Tao Ning realize that one of his hands is always covered by Zhao Jingqun’s broad palm, and a IV drip is on the back of that hand.
He “Oh”s blankly and looks at his surroundings. The furniture has everything, and it is clean and bright, but it doesn’t look like the Song family’s. “This is a hospital.” Zhao Jingqun answers his questions while bringing him a bowl of porridge. He scoops up a spoonful, blows on it, and then tests the temperature to make sure it won’t be hot. He coaxes Tao Ning. “My sweet boy, come on, have some porridge first.”
Seeing Tao Ning obediently open his mouth, Zhao Jingqun’s eyes darken. At the same time, the tip of his heart softens into water, and he feeds him spoonful by spoonful.
It’s a familiar taste. Tao Ning knows after just one bite that Zhao Jingqun made it himself.
He eats very slowly. Zhao Jingqun doesn’t rush him. After Tao Ning finishes, he leans in and licks the corner of Tao Ning’s lips meticulously. When he lets go, a magnetic chuckle rolls out of his throat. “It seems my cooking skills have not diminished. This porridge is especially delicious.”
The wolf-like eyes look at him with affection, and Tao Ning’s cheeks flush.
Zhao Jingqun then touches his forehead again. It’s not as hot as before, but he is still not at ease. “Wait here obediently. Your cousin is going to call the doctor over.”
It seems the man is not giving up on the cousin thing.
Tao Ning: “…Mhm.”
He is kissed, and only then does the door close. Tao Ning asks the system, System, what are you doing?
The system makes a whimpering mechanical cry. Dummy, they won’t let me join the melon seed-eating contest.
Why?
Because… I can’t tell you.
Oh, who is the other system?
The system is confused. Dummy, how did you know there was another system?
Tao Ning says, Sometimes I hear a voice that is different from yours.
The system stammers. That, that is actually my supervisor. They are afraid I’ll make a mistake, so they occasionally show up.
Tao Ning: Oh.
He doesn’t believe it’s that simple, but he probably won’t get anything out of the system. He can only wait for the right moment.
In the hallway outside the door, Sun Er points to dozens of boxes of supplements on the floor. Every item is a rare commodity. He doesn’t know what to do with them. He scratches his head and asks the man who is rolling a cigarette in front of him, “Young Master Zhao, these are from the Second Young Master of the Song family. Should we take them?”
“Throw them away.”
He throws the tobacco he was rolling away. Zhao Jingqun puts his hands in his pants pockets and is about to go find the doctor. He walks halfway and then turns back. Sun Er watches with wide eyes as the man viciously kicks a box of supplements. With a bang, the bottled items inside the box probably all shattered.
With such a big temper, Sun Er knows it has something to do with the angelic sister-in-law. It seems the Second Young Master of the Song family and his young master don’t get along. But kicking supplements is considered a light way of venting. If he hadn’t found the angelic sister-in-law, Sun Er wouldn’t dare to imagine what the man’s temper would have been like. It would have been either kicking supplements or kicking people, so severe that it might have attracted the police.
After kicking a dozen boxes of supplements to pieces, Zhao Jingqun washes his hands, and his jealousy subsides a little. He then goes to find the doctor.
A very well-respected old doctor comes. He takes Tao Ning’s temperature. The fever has not completely gone away. He mentions some precautions. Zhao Jingqun listens very carefully on the side. There is no trace of aggression on his face, and he keeps saying “yes.” This man, who is cruel and vicious when he works outside, is now carefully taking note of everything related to Tao Ning.
Tao Ning doesn’t have a chance to interrupt. He watches the man talk to the old doctor with a smile on his face. He smells a faint scent of smoke on him. It’s not strong, very light, not like it came from smoking.
After the old doctor leaves, a spoonful of warm water is brought to his lips. Tao Ning drinks it and asks him, “Are you still smoking?”
Zhao Jingqun’s hand that is feeding him water doesn’t stop. “I couldn’t sleep after you left, so I could only rely on those cigarettes.” He says with a smile. “Is my cousin going to manage my smoking?”
Tao Ning purses his lips and refuses to drink anymore.
Zhao Jingqun is so helplessly annoyed by this little lawless treasure. He was the one who called him “cousin” first. He swallowed his pride and accepted the name, and he hasn’t even complained yet. But this treasure is so overbearing. He is only allowed to start a fire, but the people are not allowed to light a lamp. If he makes a little fun of him, he gets stubborn.
Having no choice with Tao Ning, Zhao Jingqun kisses the corner of his lips and coaxes him. “Smell it. There’s no cigarette smell on my mouth. I don’t smoke anymore. I just look at them and don’t smoke them.” He puts down the bowl and chopsticks, quickly takes off his clothes, and pulls Tao Ning into his arms, letting him sit on his lap. “I’ll smoke even less after I found you. What’s the point of smoking when I have you? Just a kiss from you is enough.”
He has been smoking for over a decade, and it has become a habit. Even when he doesn’t smoke, there is always a faint smell of smoke on him. He asked a doctor, and it doesn’t have a big effect. And Tao Ning will cough when he smells it, so he has quit. It’s just that during the time Tao Ning was not around, Zhao Jingqun had a hard time and could only rely on nicotine to numb himself and get through it.
The hard times are over. He has finally found his treasure.
As he speaks, Zhao Jingqun kisses the young man again. The young man is very well-behaved in his arms. Those eyes with thick eyelashes just look at him lightly, and Zhao Jingqun’s soul is immediately hooked away. He will basically do whatever the young man says, even if he wants his life, Zhao Jingqun would give it to him right away.
But there is still one very important thing. Zhao Jingqun takes a deep breath to clear his head, and he asks with a straight face, “What’s your relationship with that Song Yucong?”
“…”
Tao Ning looks up and tries to kiss him. Zhao Jingqun a hard time with one hand covering his mouth, silently reciting that form is emptiness and emptiness is form. He cannot be tempted by beauty. This precious treasure, after wandering outside, is no longer a little wooden doll but a little fox spirit who can lie.
Even though a certain part of him is hard enough to explode.
Tao Ning moves his hand away and says without changing his expression, “He is just one of my sponsors. He… he helped me a lot. We are just friends.”
Zhao Jingqun’s face is confused. Could it be that Song Yucong was the one who sent him messages using Tao Ning’s phone? But looking at Song Yucong’s appearance, he intuitively knows it’s not him. But he has nothing to say either. After all, in the two months when he couldn’t see Tao Ning, he couldn’t control who Tao Ning made friends with or stop others from contacting Tao Ning.
But he is still so jealous that he wants to kill that weakling.
Zhao Jingqun knows he is sick. He has an almost pathological possessiveness and desire for control over Tao Ning. He once thought that after finding Tao Ning, he would completely confine him and make his life only about him. But he also knows that this is wrong. How could a lemon who grew up freely in the mountains be willing to be his caged bird?
He’ll just believe that they are just friends for now. Zhao Jingqun comforts himself. “…Then where are the glasses your husband gave you?” His last bit of possessiveness is to hope that Tao Ning’s beauty is hidden a little more. He doesn’t want anyone else but him to see Tao Ning’s beauty.
Tao Ning says honestly, “I left them at the Song family’s.”
Zhao Jingqun asks again, “And your phone?”
“It’s at school.”
Zhao Jingqun is deep in thought. “My dear, I want to discuss two things with you.”
“Mhm.”
“Your husband won’t interfere with your studies this year. After all, this is a big thing for you. But after a year, you must immediately go abroad with me for surgery. I have already replaced all your medicine with the best ones, both domestic and foreign. They will arrive tomorrow.” Zhao Jingqun’s tone is a little heavy. His thumb gently rubs his soft cheek.
“…Mhm.”
Tao Ning agrees.
“There’s one more thing. My dear, can you be a day student?” Zhao Jingqun says. “I’m worried that you won’t eat or drink well at school, so I bought a house near your school. It will be convenient for me to take care of you and take you to and from school. What do you think? Hmm?”
Tao Ning is silent because Xu Jun is still at school. So far, his progress with Xu Jun is not going well. Right now, Xu Jun only sees him as a friend. He doesn’t know what to do.
After thinking for a moment, Tao Ning chooses a compromise. “I’ll go back with you from Monday to Friday, and I’ll study at school on weekends.” Studying is true, but it’s studying with Xu Jun.
Zhao Jingqun argues. “The house I bought has great soundproofing. It won’t affect your studies, my dear. Come back on weekends too.”
The watery eyes look at him, not saying a word.
Zhao Jingqun’s willpower lasts for less than three seconds before he gives in. But he has to get a little compensation. He grips the young man’s head and kisses him hard.
The veins on his palm bulge. He coaxes Tao Ning in a hoarse voice. “…Be good, say ‘husband’.”
“Hu… husband.”
The young man in his arms has a hint of a cry. Zhao Jingqun takes a deep breath, barely letting him get a breath, then licks the saliva from the corner of his mouth, and continues to plunder the fragrance from the person’s lips and teeth. His tongue almost goes into his throat, repeatedly thrusting and licking. Hearing the young man’s faint crying, Zhao Jingqun’s eyes are extremely terrifying. He holds his slender hands behind his back, not allowing him to move or struggle.
Anyone who sees this would feel that the man wants to devour the young man alive.
In the end, he is afraid that Tao Ning’s emotional instability will worsen his condition. Zhao Jingqun is panting heavily, his eyes bloodshot, and his voice is as hoarse as rough sand. “Be good, wait for your husband here.” He doesn’t hide his desire for Tao Ning at all. He walks uncomfortably, adjusts his pants, and goes to the bathroom with a swagger.
In the bathroom, Zhao Jingqun holds a piece of cloth with Ultraman on it in his mouth, holds a picture of Tao Ning in one hand, and rubs the young man’s rosy lips in the picture with his thumb, narrowing his eyes as if in agony.
Fifty-plus minutes later, Zhao Jingqun comes out with a body full of cold water vapor. Tao Ning is already asleep. He stares at his sleeping profile for a long time, almost obsessively. He takes out a box, opens it, and inside is a mechanical watch worth millions.
After warming the mechanical watch with his hand, Zhao Jingqun puts it on Tao Ning. It is both a gift and a tracker. It’s waterproof, fireproof, and explosion-proof. It sends him Tao Ning’s location at any time.
He must know where Tao Ning is at all times to be able to sleep peacefully.
