Chapter 6: Sneaking into His Bed
Zhao Jingqun squatted there for a while before the person behind him approached step by step. First came the boy’s soft, smooth hands, slowly wrapping around his neck.
The moment their skin touched, Zhao Jingqun’s body went stiff, and his mind went blank.
Then, a warm body pressed against his back. It was incredibly soft and light, accompanied by a sweet scent of lemon and an unknown body fragrance.
Zhao Jingqun held his breath. For some reason, his heart suddenly began to beat faster, and his mind, as if rusted, could only form one thought: What kind of body wash does this idiot use?
He felt a little short of breath. He had specifically checked the body wash brand when he took a shower in the afternoon—it was a very common and popular brand.
So why did it smell so good on this idiot?
By the time he came to his senses, the person behind him was already lightly draped over his back and said in a very soft voice, “I’m okay now… thank you.”
Zhao Jingqun let out a breath, banishing the chaotic thoughts in his head. Then he cupped the boy’s thighs, his fingers sinking into the soft flesh, and stood up abruptly.
It was the first time Tao Ning had been carried on someone’s back. He was looking around with curiosity. The man was very tall, and when he suddenly stood up, the view became much wider.
Because of the sudden movement, Tao Ning, afraid of falling, reflexively hugged him tighter.
Unexpectedly, the man carrying him shifted his weight and warned, “Don’t move around.” His voice was a bit hoarser than before.
So Tao Ning obediently lay on his back, not daring to move. He could hear the heavy breathing of the person beneath him, which was especially clear in the dim light of the dense forest.
The man seemed to realize his unusual behavior. A moment later, his breathing slowed and returned to normal. As a result, only the dappled shadows of the trees and the sounds of countless insects and birds remained in the deep forest.
The man’s steps made the dried branches and crushed stones crunch. The messy branches around them slowly moved backward as a faint light filtered down, casting two closely intertwined, distorted shadows on the ground.
After a day of exhaustion and fright, Tao Ning’s mind and body had reached their limit. He became sleepy and quickly fell asleep on the man’s back.
Zhao Jingqun noticed the shallow breathing of the person on his back. The sweet scent continuously sprayed onto his earlobe, making him lose his focus. The warmth in his palms, touching the boy’s soft flesh, rose to a scorching level.
He looked at the seemingly endless mountain path, dark and terrifying, yet he felt a sense of peace and tranquility he had never experienced before.
Night descended silently. The moon rose, and Tao Ning was still a little groggy when he was woken up.
“Idiot, we’re at your house,” the person beneath him said in a low voice.
Tao Ning groggily rubbed his eyes and mumbled, “I’m not an idiot, I’m very powerful…”
The man carrying him scoffed. “Yeah, so powerful you almost couldn’t make it home.”
Hearing the voice, Tao Ning finally came to his senses, and his cheeks instantly turned red. He stammered, “I-I’m sorry, I caused you trouble…” Then, remembering the stack of money he threw at the face of Zhang Mazi, his voice became even smaller and softer. “How much did you… give him? I’ll pay you back slowly.”
Zhao Jingqun put him down. Seeing that the boy could stand, he put some distance between them.
He couldn’t pinpoint the reason, but he didn’t want to have too much contact with Tao Ning. However, since he was staying at his house, necessary contact was unavoidable.
After thinking about it, he’d be leaving in a few days anyway, so if this idiot wanted to pay him back, let him.
Tao Ning didn’t notice the man’s sudden cold expression. He didn’t even smile, just said, “Three to four thousand.”
Hearing the number, a look of difficulty appeared on the boy’s face. He unconsciously bit his red, soft lower lip and let out a soft “oh.”
Zhao Jingqun watched him for a while, and for some reason, his mood improved. Just as he was about to watch for a few more seconds, two beams of light suddenly swept over from a distance.
“Ningning! Jingqun! Is that you? Hurry home for dinner!”
Then came the sound of quick, small steps. “Uncle! Uncle!”
Zhao Jingqun quickly looked away, returning to his nonchalant demeanor.
Xiaomeng ran over, and just as she was about to pounce on Tao Ning, she saw the glaring bruise on his knee. She immediately panicked and screamed, “Mom! Uncle is hurt!”
Then, a hurried sound of footsteps came from a distance. Tao Yuan appeared with a flashlight. When she saw the boy’s injuries, she was so startled she almost dropped the flashlight. “Ningning, what happened to you? Why did you come back like this after going out? Huh? Tell your sister, who bullied you…”
“No one did, I fell myself.”
“You child! The glasses I bought you don’t even have a prescription, did you really become nearsighted? Did you not listen to me and secretly do your homework at night? You’re deliberately trying to make your sister worry, aren’t you…”
Zhao Jingqun stood aside, watching the urgency on Tao Yuan’s face, Xiaomeng’s pouting, tearful expression, and the boy’s head bowed, looking like he was admitting his mistake.
It was a scene so noisy it should have made his ears hurt, yet the long-standing hostility in his heart was slowly soothed.
He stared at the swelling on Tao Ning’s knee for a few seconds, took out his phone, and sent a message with his head lowered.
Tao Yuan believed Tao Ning’s story about accidentally falling and getting hurt. To be precise, she never doubted anything Tao Ning said.
She quickly helped Tao Ning into the house, not forgetting to call out to Zhao Jingqun, “Jingqun, I’ll take Ningning back to his room first. I’ll ask Xiaomeng to show you where to eat.”
Of course, Zhao Jingqun didn’t need a little kid to show him where to eat. And this little kid clearly didn’t welcome him and showed great hostility. He just ate something casually at the dinner table.
After Tao Yuan helped Tao Ning to his room, she brought him dinner. While Tao Ning was eating in small bites, she began to lecture him, “You little brat, why did you come back with all these injuries? It looks so scary; you almost scared my heart out of me! I’ll go to Old Han’s place tomorrow to get some medicine. These injuries are so serious, you’re not going to be a guide tomorrow…”
Tao Ning swallowed a mouthful of rice. “It doesn’t hurt anymore, I can go.”
Tao Yuan was displeased. “You little brat…”
She continued her lecture. As she was talking, the boy who had been looking docile suddenly let out a soft laugh. It wasn’t loud, but Tao Yuan instantly got angry. “I’m lecturing you, and you dare to laugh?”
Tao Ning quickly admitted his mistake. “N-no.”
It was because the system in his mind had just shown him a photo. The photo was of Zhao Jingqun carrying him back home.
Then the system slyly asked: Idiot, do you think I took a good picture? Doesn’t it look like that ‘Pigsy carrying his bride’ thing that you humans have?
Zhao Jingqun was tall, and his clothes hid tight, muscular physique, which made Tao Ning’s well-proportioned, slender figure look much smaller.
The system only took two blurry shadows: a tall, sturdy shadow with a delicate figure draped on it.
Tao Ning had barely had his picture taken his entire life, so he was a bit shy. But after the system said that, the more he looked, the more it looked like it. Thinking of Zhao Jingqun’s face replaced with Pigsy’s, who was also sporting red hair, he couldn’t help but laugh out loud.
As a result, Tao Ning was lectured by Tao Yuan again. He didn’t see that Zhao Jingqun was standing outside the door, silently watching him pout and then suddenly smile.
It was the first time he had seen the boy smile. Even with those rustic, heavy black-framed glasses, his shallow smile instantly seemed to light up the dim room.
So this idiot looked pretty good when he wasn’t keeping his head down and being cautious.
His gaze lingered on the boy’s smile for a long time. Only when the smile disappeared did he awkwardly look away.
Tao Ning happened to catch a glimpse of Zhao Jingqun leaving but didn’t think about the reason. He began to worry about the huge debt he owed and how many tutoring sessions he would need to pay it back.
After dinner, his knee still hurt, but it wasn’t the agonizing pain he had felt at first.
Tao Yuan had taken him for a checkup before. At that time, he was harvesting lemons for the family and accidentally cut his hand. A small cut, but it bled a lot, which almost made Tao Yuan faint. She rushed him to the county hospital that night.
The checkup results showed that he had a problem with his blood clotting. However, the hospital in their remote, backward county couldn’t find anything more specific.
The doctor told them to go to a bigger city for another checkup. Tao Ning felt he was fine, able to run and jump, as long as he didn’t bleed. So he refused to go.
Tao Yuan couldn’t win against him. She knew her brother. On the outside, he looked submissive and easy to bully, but once he made up his mind about something, ten oxen couldn’t pull him back. He was stubborn.
Seeing that he was truly okay, she gave in. But from then on, Tao Yuan didn’t let Tao Ning help with chores after school anymore. Instead, she told him to focus on his studies.
Tao Ning silently followed her a few times, but Tao Yuan scolded him back. Later, he started tutoring others, hoping to earn some money to help out the family.
But two or three years later, after deducting the money for family expenses, he only had about a thousand yuan on him at most.
How many tutoring sessions would it take to pay back the debt? Tao Ning was a little upset. He was going to the city soon. After he finished the mission, would he ever see Zhao Jingqun again?
Tao Ning slowly moved his feet to get his shower supplies. The small boy was full of worries. After a slow shower, he ran into Zhao Jingqun, who was leaning against the door smoking.
The warm, orange light from inside the house slanted out, intertwining with the white smoke. Tao Ning coughed, and the smoke stopped.
Then, the man’s deep, cold voice spoke. “What are you wearing?” The tone was a bit harsh, seemingly full of disdain.
Tao Ning was stunned. He looked down at his clothes. They were just normal summer pajamas, a T-shirt and shorts. What was wrong with them?
He looked up and met Zhao Jingqun’s cold gaze. The cigarette had been put out, the butt thrown on the concrete ground. The man ground it with his foot a few times and then went into the house without waiting for an answer.
Tao Ning was a bit confused. He had been smiling during the day, so why hadn’t he smiled again since he saved him? Was it because he owed him money?
Tao Ning was a good student who liked to find answers, so he humbly asked the system: System, are you there?
The sound of ‘Don’t look at me, I’m just a sheep’ played in his mind, followed by the sound of seeds being cracked. After a moment, the system finally spoke: What’s up, idiot?
Tao Ning was honest: I think I messed up the mission.
The system was shocked, and the sound of seeds dropping all over the floor rang in his mind: What happened? I just went to watch a cartoon, and you messed up the mission?? That’s not right. I’ve only given you two tasks, and you completed them well, didn’t you?
Tao Ning said: It’s not about those two tasks. I feel… I feel like Zhao Jingqun hates me a little. It might be very difficult for him to say he loves me later.
The system smacked its lips: Impossible. We’ve read so many secret manuals. How could he hate you? It must be because we haven’t put things into practice. The Sweet Little Gay of Temptation says you have to be proactive. How about this, I’ll give you a tip. Your beds are very close. Tonight, you’ll sneak into his bed.
Tao Ning’s face turned red: T-that’s not good.
The system tried to persuade him: I’m more experienced than you. Just trust me.
Tao Ning nodded, half understanding, half not: Okay…
After entering the room, Tao Ning found that Zhao Jingqun was already in bed, looking down at his phone. He didn’t even look at him when he heard him come in, and there was no smile on his face.
Looks like I need to pay him back soon, Tao Ning thought as he got into bed. His sleeping posture was very proper. He didn’t move around and lay on his back, able to maintain this position all night.
Before long, accompanied by the sounds of insects outside, an even breathing sound came from the bed.
On the other bed, Zhao Jingqun was holding a phone with no programs running. He had been staring at the home screen for a long time. It wasn’t until the person next to him fell asleep that his tense body gradually relaxed.
After a while, he sent a message to someone: Bring a few more pairs of thin, long pants.
He glanced at the person next to him again.
And pajamas. Height 170.
The other person replied: OK, Brother Jing. Anything else?
Zhao Jingqun didn’t reply. He put his phone away and closed his eyes. Unexpectedly, as soon as he did, an image of the boy without his glasses, with his damp bangs all pushed back from his forehead, appeared in his mind.
After just one glance, Zhao Jingqun almost dropped the cigarette he was holding. It was then that he finally understood why Tao Yuan had bought that idiot glasses with no prescription.
