Chapter 42: A Husband Who Can’t Find His Wife
Deep in the rainforest of Northern Myanmar’s Southern Wa State.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
Countless bullets streaked through tree bark and human flesh. The smell of gunpowder and bullet holes filled this sun-blocking rainforest. Crows, like black, ominous arrows, flew across the sky. Half an hour later, the sounds of bombs and bullets finally died down.
A man in a green military uniform was carrying an assault rifle and cursing as he walked toward a wooden house: “Damn those Tongyu Army bastards! They still have the guts to come and rob this batch of goods. Is China’s Zhao family not scary enough for them?! If they have the guts, they should come and rob us openly. Cursing those turtle-sons to not have an asshole in their next life for their sneak attacks!”
Another man nudged him with his elbow. “D-Dagger, be careful what you say when we go in. That malevolent being is in there.”
At the mention of this “malevolent being,” D-Dagger, who had been cursing, fell silent. But he couldn’t hold it in and said in a muffled voice: “I didn’t expect the young master the Zhao family found to not be a soft-skinned weakling. His methods are even more ruthless than us mercenaries who have been fighting on the border all year round. The way he tortures people…”
At this, D-Dagger and the man looked at each other and both saw a shudder in each other’s eyes.
A month ago, a batch of goods from the Zhao family was to be transported from Malaysia to Northern Myanmar and then to China. But halfway there, a civil war broke out in Northern Myanmar, and the goods were hijacked by the enraged Tongyu Army. The mercenaries delivering the goods demanded that they release the goods, saying they were from China’s Zhao family. Under normal circumstances, the Tongyu Army’s leader at the time would release the goods upon hearing the four words “China’s Zhao family.”
China’s Zhao family became famous in Southeast Asia for their arms business in the last century. Later, they moved to the mainland to develop and have now completely cleaned up their business. They even got in touch with the government, transforming into powerful businessmen. Even so, their deterrence in Northern Myanmar still existed. However, the new Tongyu Army leader, with a new position, needed to establish his authority. Like a blind man, he hijacked the Zhao family’s goods, killed several of the delivery men, and repeatedly said that he didn’t believe they were from the Zhao family.
They wouldn’t release the goods unless a blood relative of the Zhao family came over.
It was a well-known fact that the Zhao family now only had a gentle eldest daughter and that their biological grandson, who had been lost more than ten years ago, had only recently been found. He had probably become a coward outside, so the Northern Myanmar side was confident and believed that they wouldn’t send a delicate woman over to negotiate.
Unexpectedly, half a month ago, the Zhao family’s biological grandson really came.
Not only did he come, but on that very day, he skinned a Tongyu Army member alive and hung him on a tree. The bloody corpse scared the surrounding mercenaries, who were used to bloodshed, into not daring to move. But the Zhao family’s grandson was covered in blood, the military knife in his hand was gleaming, and he stared at the corpse hanging on the tree with a smile at the corner of his mouth. He said casually: “Tell them, for every one who comes, one will be hung on a tree.”
Since then, everyone knew this young master Zhao’s name, but behind his back, they only dared to call him “the malevolent being.” Later, this malevolent being went deep into the cold and ruthless Tongyu Army’s base to negotiate. The other side finally agreed to release the goods. They were expected to return to China this month.
But for some reason, the Tongyu Army launched another sneak attack today. D-Dagger and the other brothers guarded the goods all night, and they lost several mercenaries.
D-Dagger swallowed his saliva. The two of them pushed open the wooden house door.
The inside of the house was as dark as an endless night. Only a dim orange light with mosquitoes flying around it gave off some light. At the same time, a strong, nauseating smell of blood came over them. On the ground, there was a bound man with a pointed mouth. His bruised and swollen face was a mix of terror and panic. Under him, there was a puddle of yellow urine.
The pointed-mouth man wiggled his body, crawling forward like a maggot. His lips kept trembling: “Young Master Zhao… Young Master Zhao… let me go… I was wrong… I was wrong…”
D-Dagger whispered to the person next to him: “Isn’t that Monkey? What’s wrong with him?”
“He sold out our position. The people who came to launch a sneak attack today were disguised as the Tongyu Army’s sworn enemies. Their goal was to make us keep fighting. This Monkey took money and informed those people. It’s all this beast’s fault. If he hadn’t been so greedy, I would have been on vacation in the Philippines by now.”
The man spat. D-Dagger was instantly filled with anger, because one of his brothers was injured in this sneak attack. He was about to go up and kick him when suddenly, with a creak, the back door of the wooden house opened.
The back door was near the shadows. Everyone held their breath. Some people even lowered their heads and glanced over fearfully—
In the dimness, a steady sound of footsteps, like a person stepping on everyone’s tense heartstrings, was heard. A pair of black military boots was the first to step out of the shadows, tall and powerful. Immediately after, a body over one meter ninety came out from behind the shadows. Under the light, the man was in black clothes and had black hair. A cigarette was clamped between his long fingers. In the dim light, the tiny spark at the tip of the cigarette was extremely dazzling and emitted a pungent, oppressive smoke.
Raindrops rolled off the eaves. Plop, plop.
The military boots stepped on the sticky bloodstains. Zhao Jingqun exhaled a puff of hazy smoke. He lifted his eyelids, like a wolf pack leader staring at his prey. His cold gaze fell on the gasping Monkey.
He moved closer and casually squatted down. A smile appeared on his handsome face. Then, without blinking, he pressed the burning cigarette butt into Monkey’s eye.
“Aahhhhhh!!”
Monkey was in so much pain that he lost control of his bladder again. His miserable scream made everyone around him’s hair stand on end. They couldn’t help but move away from this malevolent freak.
“Oh, it’s good that you know you were wrong.” Zhao Jingqun flicked his finger. The cigarette butt fell into the bloodstains. He stood up, his hands casually in his somewhat loose pants pockets. “Stuff some of the goods into his stomach and send him over.”
The “goods” here usually referred to bombs. Where they were to be sent was self-evident. The other side dared to use the Zhao family as a gun, so they had to be prepared to bear the Zhao family’s anger and revenge. After this incident, no one dared to secretly talk about the Zhao family’s biological grandson being a coward or a good-for-nothing.
There were also rumors that in a year, the Zhao family’s head would officially step down and hand over the family’s hundreds of millions of dollars and both legal and illegal businesses to this twenty-three-year-old eldest grandson.
After that, the name “Zhao Jingqun” would only cause people to tremble.
But only Sun Ershao, who had been following this smiling, malevolent being, knew that these people were simply unlucky to have run into a gun. Because at this moment, Young Master Zhao was a husband who couldn’t find his wife and had been going crazy for a long time but still couldn’t find her, making his mood unpredictable.
Who could be in a good mood when they couldn’t find their wife? That’s why he was so ruthless!
This was exactly the case with Young Master Zhao.
A slightly hoarse voice from being smoked sounded faintly: “Still no news?” Sun Ershao looked over. The man who had just been like a god of death was now like a lazy bandit in a hammock. One hand was under his head, and the other was scrolling on his phone. He didn’t look violent at all.
Sun Ershao had accidentally seen the screen of that phone. It was full of harassing messages that this malevolent being had sent to his wife. He didn’t know if that fairy-like man had really become an immortal. There was no news of his whereabouts at all. The people in that village all said they didn’t know, and the village head was also talking nonsense and being vague.
And they didn’t dare to threaten his wife’s family to get them to talk, so they couldn’t find him at all. His wife was as if he had disappeared from the face of the Earth.
Strange, very strange!
Sun Ershao went over flatteringly and wiped the cold sweat from his forehead: “T-There’s still no news.”
The person in the hammock’s gaze swept over him. Sun Ershao felt a chill down his spine, but the man’s gaze was actually very calm. He continued to scroll on his phone and said an indifferent “oh.” “Keep looking.”
“Y-Yes, sir.”
Sun Ershao walked away. Zhao Jingqun continued to lie in the hammock. He looked at the chatbox on his phone with the memo “The liar I’ll make into a human-and-vegetable porridge when I catch him.” The chat was filled with his monologues—
Dummy, I was wrong. Can we not break up? I’ll give you whatever you want. Can we not break up?
Dummy, I’m in a bad mood today. Why are you ignoring me?
What did I do wrong? Why are you ignoring me?
[Dummy, it’s raining in the county. Wear more clothes.
Dummy, the Zhao family has a very good private doctor. I want him to come and check your body.
You’re gone.
…
I’m going to cut down that pagoda tree.
It’s raining in Star City again. I don’t like rainy days.
I fed a lemon to the dog today, but the dog didn’t eat it. You’re a lemon that even a dog won’t eat.
I’m going to train with the army. I want to see you one more time.
…
Until the endless messages slid to the very bottom, there was the last one—
I hate you, Tao Ning.
…
“Son, Ningning, come again next weekend!”
The vacation passed quickly. Father Xu sent the two of them back to the station. Xu Jun held Tao Ning’s hand and gave a faint “hmm.” Tao Ning nodded obediently, “Goodbye, Uncle.”
Back at the dorm, Tao Ning was very excited about the official start of school tomorrow. He was in the same class as Xu Jun, so he leaned on his desk, asking about the difficulty of the courses while watching Xu Jun clean the dorm.
“What is the equestrian class like?”
Xu Jun, who was mopping the floor, had an expressionless face and said blandly: “Not great. The gluteal muscles will be damaged.”
Tao Ning giggled. His eyes, which used to have a hint of timidity, were now filled with a cheerful smile. His picturesque eyebrows were curved, and even with the unfashionable black-rimmed glasses, he looked very handsome.
Xu Jun was very diligent and disinfected the entire dorm. After he finished tidying up his own things, he looked at Tao Ning with a gentle gaze. “Do you mind if I tidy up your things?”
Tao Ning shook his head, his eyes sparkling. He suddenly remembered that he had a mission to complete and said: “I’ll help you.”
“Okay.”
Tao Ning didn’t like to fold blankets. After getting up, he would just stand there for a while, and then he would just flatten the blanket and pat it a few times and consider it folded. This was very jarring for Xu Jun, who was a germaphobe and had obsessive-compulsive disorder. He folded the blanket for Tao Ning, and Tao Ning went to water his succulents.
The soft, white blanket was folded neatly. The pillow was also picked up. Xu Jun’s hand paused. His gaze fell on the phone under the pillow. It was the most high-end smartphone in the country, and its price was expensive. It was a phone that an ordinary family would almost never consider.
He knew Tao Ning’s family was poor… so why did the little lemon have it?
And why was it in such a private place as under the pillow?
Xu Jun knew he had to restrain himself again and again so as not to scare away the lemon who didn’t understand anything. But the attitude of that good-for-nothing Song Yuceng and this phone with an unknown origin made it difficult for him to ignore and not care.
There was once a Taoist priest with an unknown origin who told him his fortune, saying that he would “be hurt by his great intelligence and have an unhappy life from deep affection.” If he became too attached to a love that was not accepted by the world, he would spend the rest of his life in bitterness.
Xu Jun didn’t believe it.
His eyes behind the gold-rimmed glasses darkened. Xu Jun couldn’t restrain himself anymore at this moment. He reached out to touch this cold phone, but it was snatched away by someone. Tao Ning clenched the phone, his face full of panic, and his voice was stammering: “I… I don’t like other people touching my things.”
A lie.
Xu Jun looked at him calmly and gave a faint “hmm.”
