Chapter 30: Oxent College
Tao Ning and A Yun hurried to the dining room, just in time for the tail end of the lunch. This time, just like when he first arrived, only Madam Song, Song Heng, and Song Yuceng, who was sitting alone at the lower end, were at the table.
Song Yuceng had his arms crossed. Ever since Tao Ning appeared, his disdainful and somewhat veiled gaze had been fixed on him. The boy had obvious dark circles under his eyes. Seeing him cautiously greet Song Heng and Madam Song, but only nodding at him, a nameless anger suddenly flared up.
He threw his fork, making a loud noise, and said sarcastically, “Are you a pig? Sleeping for so long.”
His dark and sticky gaze fell on the boy’s shoes and clothes. He continued to mock, “Wearing shoes that are so worn out, tsk, what a pauper…”
“Song Yuceng, have you made enough of a scene?!” Madam Song interrupted him in time. She was speaking in English, and her beautiful face was full of disappointment. Her phoenix eyes, which were almost identical to Song Yuceng’s, were filled with anger. “If you’re sick, go take your medicine. If you get expelled from school again, I’ll send you to England immediately!”
Song Yuceng looked at her coldly. “Do you even have the face to mention my illness? Don’t you know how I got sick? Well, that’s right, I’m not really your son, just a tool for you to make money…”
“Enough! Get the family law! Get the family law!” Madam Song lost her basic composure. Her face was a little distorted, and she clutched her heart, her whole body trembling with anger.
This time, Song Heng did not step in to mediate. Instead, he looked at Tao Ning, who was eating with his head down, with a smile. “I’m sorry you had to see that. Yuceng is just an immature child. In school, I’ll have to trouble you to take care of him.”
Tao Ning was almost dumbfounded by the scene, but as someone living under someone else’s roof, he could only follow the principle Tao Yuan had taught him: “See less, hear less, and just focus on studying.” So from the moment their argument started, he quickly lowered his head, like a frightened hamster, and just focused on eating.
So when Song Heng mentioned him, Tao Ning’s body stiffened abnormally. He racked his brain and could only nod.
But he didn’t expect that such a small action from him would instantly cause an even more intense argument. Song Yuceng’s face was terrifying. His gaze was fixed on Tao Ning like a torch. “You agree to whatever he says. I’m telling you, country bumpkin, are you trying to seduce Song Heng? You can even fall for a piece of trash like him. Isn’t that disgusting?”
Slap!
A heavy slap landed on Song Yuceng’s face. Madam Song was trembling, and she pointed at him and said, “Kneel down!”
A handprint quickly appeared on the man’s handsome cheek. His eyes were cold, but they were fixed on Tao Ning, like a trapped beast staring at an innocent young bird outside the cage. It tried every way to attract the young bird’s attention, but each time it was left in a mess.
In those sharp, indifferent eyes that seemed to fear nothing, there was a hint of pain and confusion.
Tao Ning stared blankly back at him. Was it an illusion? Two bodyguards rushed over and restrained Song Yuceng’s arms. He didn’t resist, his expression cold. He actually looked a little like a defeated peacock.
The bodyguards took the man away, and Madam Song also left. She was holding a half-meter-long whip. The whip was made of cowhide and was as hard as rusty iron wire, which showed how much it would hurt to be hit by it.
The lunch, which was supposed to be a farewell, ended abruptly as a farce. Tao Ning was a little awkward. A Yun had already packed his things for him.
Oksen College was a non-boarding school with a tuition fee of several hundred thousand yuan per semester. You could apply for boarding, which was usually done by students who were aiming for the top universities in the country, and also by transfer students like Tao Ning. These transfer students were almost all top students from ordinary families across the country. These students were only eligible for a tuition waiver if they maintained their grades in the top ten percent of the school.
Tao Ning was very excited the moment he got into the car, but he was also nervous. His hands were obediently placed on his legs, but his beautiful eyes were looking left and right.
A Yun saw his innocent and carefree look and felt a little worried. “Young Master Tao Ning, I’ve packed all your things for you. I’ve put all your medicine in the silver suitcase. I’ll pick you up from school with the driver every Friday. Don’t be afraid when you’re alone at school. Just call me if you need anything…”
When A Yun mentioned the phone, Tao Ning’s heart skipped a beat. His nervous and expectant look disappeared, and he asked in a low voice, “I have a phone under my pillow. A Yun, did you put it in the suitcase?”
That was the phone Zhao Jingqun had given him. He had always kept it under his pillow. He had never turned it on or taken it out, like a dusty memory that could no longer be opened at the right time.
A Yun nodded. “I put it in for you.” He took out a small notebook from his pocket and opened it. Inside were the phone numbers of several people. He pointed to the first one and said, “This is my number, this is the driver’s, this is the villa’s landline, this is the eldest young master’s office, and this is the gatekeeper’s.”
“Is there no number for the second young master?”
“Well…”
Everyone in the villa wanted to stay as far away from the second young master as possible. Who would have the guts to ask for his phone number? No one.
Talk of the devil. The car door opened automatically at this moment. Song Yuceng stood outside. Compared to his thorny appearance just now, his face was pale, and his clothes had changed from a light-colored shirt to a black suit. His tall figure also looked a little hunched, but in just one second, his whole aura became prickly again.
Lifting his eyelids, Song Yuceng looked at Tao Ning, who was sitting in the corner, with an indifferent look. He was uncharacteristically not sarcastic and sat not far away in silence.
A Yun immediately shut up and didn’t dare to say anything. He handed the notebook to Tao Ning and got out of the car.
The car started to drive toward Oksen College. The speed was smooth and gentle, and he could barely feel any bumps inside. The stiff and cold atmosphere in the car spread invisibly, but Tao Ning was unaware of it. He just felt that the air conditioning was on low and it was a little cold.
The previous bruises had healed. Tao Ning sat in the corner, rubbed his elbow with his hand, and curled up a little. But with just this small action, a cold snort came from the opposite side.
Tao Ning was stunned. He quietly put his hands down and sat in a very well-behaved posture. Time passed slowly. He felt that since he was idle, he might as well open the notebook and remember all the phone numbers.
He had just opened it when a cold voice came from the opposite side. The tone was a little weaker than it had been in the restaurant. “What are you looking at?”
His slender hand paused. Tao Ning looked up and answered seriously, “Phone numbers.” The gaze from the opposite side was a little heavy. Tao Ning looked back at him for a moment. The other person’s face was indeed very grim. On closer inspection, there was even a hint of barely noticeable grievance.
Of course, Tao Ning couldn’t feel these subtle emotions. Finally, as if he had remembered something, he asked later, “…Can I have your number?”
