Chapter 11: “I Don’t Like Men”
After dinner, it was already seven in the evening. Tao Ning stood at the courtyard gate for a while, his fair face slightly furrowed, as if lost in thought.
Simpleton, what are you thinking? Today is almost over. If the mission isn’t completed, I won’t be lenient! Humph! I still remember you wanting me to work overtime last time.
Tao Ning said sincerely, “I’m sorry… I’m calculating. He went to the county around six o’clock, and it takes about two hours to get back. My writing speed is about 28 to 30 words per minute. If I have enough time, I can write a love letter with 3,500 characters, but there are other uncontrollable factors, and the probability of uncertainty…”
The system’s melon seeds dropped again:
Simpleton, how do you know he went to the county? So how many words can you actually write?
Tao Ning pursed his lips and smiled shyly, a faint dimple appearing at the corner of his mouth. “I guessed. The clothes he brought back last time, I saw them in the county mall in early June last year… so I thought he went to the county again this time.”
“I should be able to write about 2,500 characters.”
Huh? That’s 1,000 characters short.
Tao Ning walked back and chatted with it. “My Chinese isn’t very good. Writing too much… isn’t good.”
The system asked: [How bad is it?]
And then it saw for itself—
Tao Ning, whose expression didn’t change when doing math and science problems, now looked as if he was facing a great enemy.
He spread out a neat sheet of paper and opened two books: one titled 1000 Excellent Sentences for National Essays and another called A Collection of Good Words and Sentences for the 2012 College Entrance Examination Essays.
The young man sat primly at his desk, picked up a fountain pen, and wrote while flipping through the essay books. The system watched him write the entire time, and the content shocked even this AI that had never been in love!
Dear Zhao Jingqun…
The young man paused. He remembered the man said he was older than him, so he wrote again:
Dear Brother Zhao Jingqun, my name is Tao Ning. I am eighteen years and three months old. I live in Huangmeng Village, Cloud Mist County, Group 12, Number 2…
Stop, stop, stop!
The system promptly interrupted him. It, an AI, couldn’t take it anymore.
I said, simpleton, are you writing a love letter or an introduction letter for yourself?
Tao Ning was stunned, and his expression became slightly sad. His rosy lips involuntarily pursed. “I-I’m sorry, I’ve never written one before.”
But many years ago, he had received many love letters.
Every day in class, when he opened his desk drawer, he would be buried in various love letters, bread, pastries, and other things. After class, many people would come to play with him or ask him questions.
But Tao Ning had never opened any of those things, so he didn’t know how to write a love letter.
Seeing his clueless expression, the system sighed. The road to success was long! It was clear it couldn’t rely on this simpleton much. It now understood what he meant when he said writing too much wasn’t good.
But this was too bad!
However, the young man had his head down, and his small face was full of sincerity. His watery eyes gradually dimmed, revealing a hint of grievance that made anyone who saw it want to hug and comfort him.
The system’s processor suddenly stuttered.
Actually… it’s not bad.
You can continue writing.
Tao Ning’s dimmed eyes lit up instantly. “Really?”
Of course, but I don’t know if he’ll accept it. Hurry up and write. It’s already a quarter past seven.
So Tao Ning buried his head and continued writing, each stroke of the pen incredibly serious. In the small room, a cool evening breeze blew in, and the rustling sound of writing never stopped.
It wasn’t until nine o’clock that Tao Ning finally put down his pen. He put the love letter into a Kraft paper envelope and wrote “To Brother Zhao Jingqun” on it.
But even then, Zhao Jingqun was nowhere to be seen. So, Tao Ning applied medicine to his knee. The bruises on his knee had not yet faded and still looked gruesome.
He lit another mosquito coil, and a faint smoke rose in the room. Finally, he felt at ease going to take a shower.
When Tao Ning came out, wiping his hair, Zhao Jingqun had already returned. He was leaning against the doorframe, one long leg bent, with a cigarette in his mouth. Unlike the faint smoke of the mosquito coil inside, the smoke from the cigarette was strong and pungent.
Just like the owner who smoked such a strong-smelling cigarette, he was extremely dangerous.
The man’s emotionless gaze swept over him, almost in a flash. His tone was not good: “I specifically bought clothes for you, so why are you still dressed like this… Is your injury not healed yet?”
Tao Ning, wearing short shorts, was stunned, and his attention shifted again. “…So you bought them for me on purpose?”
Realizing he had let it slip, Zhao Jingqun cursed under his breath. A moment later, he stepped on the cigarette butt, and changed the subject stiffly, “I found something and put it on your desk.”
Then he returned to his room.
Tao Ning let out a small “oh” and followed him into the room. When he went inside, he saw the phone on the desk.
At the sight of the phone, Tao Ning was frozen. He touched it gently. It was a brand he recognized. Tao Yuan used the same one, but it was a very cheap one.
He didn’t know much about expensive things, so he didn’t know how much this phone cost, but it looked better than his sister’s.
Tao Ning asked in surprise, “Is this… did you find this?”
Zhao Jingqun was sitting on a stool, his hands behind his head, leaning against the wall. He looked a little tired. Even his fiery red hair seemed a little faded. He gave a calm “mm.”
The man’s expression seemed calm, but only he knew his hands behind his head were clenched, the raised veins revealing his turbulent emotions at the moment.
Tao Ning believed him. He carefully withdrew his hand and praised him seriously, “You’re amazing. You can find such a good phone.”
Hearing this, Zhao Jingqun opened his eyes, his gaze fixed on him like a resting lone wolf eyeing its prey. And the lone wolf’s prey was rewarding him with sweet words.
After a long while, the man said in a low, husky voice, “I have plenty of phones. I’m giving you this one I found.”
He emphasized the words “I found.”
Tao Ning quickly said, “Thank you, but I can’t accept it. A phone is too valuable. I’ve already taken your clothes and medicine…”
Hearing him mention the clothes again, Zhao Jingqun’s face darkened slightly, and his gaze awkwardly moved away from his fair legs. “If you don’t want it, I’ll throw it away.”
Tao Ning was stunned. “It would be a shame to throw it away.”
“Then take it.”
“But…”
Before he could finish, Zhao Jingqun suddenly stood up, walked over, and made to throw the phone outside. Seeing this, Tao Ning quickly grabbed his arm. “I’ll take it! Don’t throw it away, it’s such a waste…”
However, before he could hold on for more than a few seconds, the man he was holding onto seemed to be burned. He quickly shook him off and stepped back, a faint, almost imperceptible blush spreading across the tips of his ears, which were hidden by his stray hair.
“Don’t get handsy.” The man’s voice dropped a few octaves.
“I’m sorry.”
Seeing the young man’s spirits fall, the man suddenly remembered the grievances he had suffered during the day. His fingers involuntarily curled a few times, and he coughed, saying, “He Yan and his sister are leaving tomorrow.”
“Why?”
“Something came up at home.”
“Oh.”
But what Tao Ning didn’t know was that the phone in the man’s pocket, with its screen still on, had a few messages that exuded coldness even through the screen—
Pick up He Yan and his sister tomorrow. If you don’t, I have ways to make them leave on their own.
The recipient replied quickly, Young Master Zhao, don’t be rash!! I’ll pick them up tomorrow right away.
Okay, come pick up me and Zhao Jingsui the day after tomorrow.
Young Master Zhao, didn’t you say you were staying for at least half a month?
Young Master Zhao?…
Zhao Jingqun came back to his senses but saw that the young man had already walked toward the desk, looking for something. Was it the book he was reading last time?
Before he could think about it, the young man walked over again. He wasn’t wearing his glasses after showering, and his skin was as smooth and fair as milk. His thick, curled eyelashes were trembling, as if he was very nervous.
When his light brown eyes looked over, Zhao Jingqun quickly looked away, his heart pounding.
What was this simpleton… trying to do?
Zhao Jingqun felt a sudden panic. The next moment, a Kraft paper envelope appeared in front of him, followed by the young man’s soft voice, speaking each word clearly:
“Zhao… Zhao… Zhao Jingqun, please… accept my love letter…”
“Boom!” a sound rang out. After these stumbling words fell, Zhao Jingqun felt a thunderclap explode in his ears. He said in disbelief, mixed with another surging emotion, “What… what did you say?”
It was the first time the young man had done something like this, and he was very nervous. He quickly lowered his head, not daring to look at him, and gathered his courage to say it again, “Please accept my love letter!”
He had his head down and could only see the man’s muddy sneakers. At this moment, the room was so quiet that you could hear a pin drop.
After an unknown amount of time, Tao Ning heard the man in front of him say stiffly, “I don’t like men.”
