- Chapter 2 - The Cannon Fodder Top in a Wealthy Family Story (2)
Xie Wenchen’s fingertips were still paused on his button when he saw Juezhou, who had been lazily drooping his eyes just a moment ago, spring up from the bed. His tone had completely changed:
“Quick, quick, quick! Put your clothes on first.”
The words had barely left his mouth when the door was opened with a spare key.
The person entering the room saw, at first glance, Xie Wenchen slowly dressing by the bed and Juezhou with his clothes disheveled and hair in a mess.
In a state of panic, Juezhou accidentally tumbled off the bed. His face contorted in pain. “Brother Nian!”
The newcomer was a handsome and refined young man, approximately twenty-five or twenty-six years old. A pair of thin-rimmed glasses rested on the bridge of his nose, and his tie was meticulously fastened with a clip. His cold gaze was fixed steadily on Juezhou.
Xie Wenchen finished re-fastening his buttons as he recalled who this new arrival was.
Gu Juezhou’s adoptive older brother, and likely the only person in the world capable of keeping Juezhou in check—the Interstellar’s First Diplomat, Jiang Henian.
True to the rumors, Jiang Henian was a man who seemed to have asceticism engraved into his very bones. His presence made the little young master of the Gu family—who was currently cowering in fear to the side—look like some sort of soft, spineless creature.
If Juezhou knew what Xie Wenchen was thinking, he would surely have spat in protest.
According to the original plot, Jiang Henian was the story’s ultimate antagonist. In a few months, Jiang Henian would also fall in love with Xie Wenchen and proceed to torture and humiliate Juezhou because of him.
Being caught by Jiang Henian while “keeping” Xie Wenchen as a plaything… how could that end well?
The System spoke nervously: 【I have reviewed the original plot. In Jiang Henian’s first appearance, he falls in love with Xie Wenchen at first sight. Furthermore, for Xie Wenchen’s sake, he gave you a severe beating.】
However, in the original plot, it wasn’t until Juezhou had kept Xie Wenchen for half a year that Jiang Henian discovered the truth.
Perhaps Juezhou’s arrival had triggered a “butterfly effect,” causing Jiang Henian to arrive early. Moreover, he only spared a brief, fleeting glance at Xie Wenchen.
He stopped in front of Juezhou and lowered his head slightly.
Thinking he was about to be struck, Juezhou’s muscles tensed up in fear.
Yet, Jiang Henian merely placed his hand gently on Juezhou’s shoulder. Through the thin fabric, he could feel the temperature of the flesh beneath. “Aren’t you cold?”
“N-n-no, I’m not cold!”
Jiang Henian’s hands were very cold, and the calluses on his fingertips were thick, rubbing against Juezhou’s delicate skin with a slight sting.
The handsome young man’s cold gaze fell upon Juezhou. “You certainly know how to play big.”
Juezhou wished he could crawl under the table. He weakly tried to change the subject: “Brother Nian, weren’t you supposed to come back in half a year…?”
Jiang Henian’s gaze drifted slowly toward the messy bed. “If I only came back in half a year, how would I have known you’ve learned so many bad habits from others?”
He took off his own coat and draped it over Juezhou’s shoulders. From beginning to end, he did not look at Xie Wenchen once.
Juezhou felt the color of the coat didn’t match the brooch he was wearing today, so he shifted slightly.
“It’s cold outside. Wear it properly,” Jiang Henian said. He pinched the back of Juezhou’s neck as if handling a cat and led him out.
Reluctantly held captive by Jiang Henian, Juezhou waved his phone at Xie Wenchen as they headed for the door, signaling for him to stay in touch.
Earlier, when he had asked Xie Wenchen to help him play games, he had already added him as a contact. Given that Xie Wenchen’s family owed a massive debt, Juezhou wasn’t worried about him running away.
Upon reaching the first floor where the banquet was being held, Jiang Henian let go of the back of Juezhou’s neck to save his dignity.
Jiang Henian held real power, and countless people were eager to establish a connection with him.
The host of the banquet had disappeared to who-knows-where, but several powerful figures surrounded Jiang Henian, asking why he had returned early.
After all, Jiang Henian was always working away and rarely returned home.
“My apologies,” Jiang Henian said expressionlessly as he maneuvered through the crowd. “It is my younger brother’s bedtime. I shall catch up with you all next time.”
Jiang Henian’s car was parked outside. Juezhou was ushered into the back seat.
The expected scolding did not come. Instead, Jiang Henian unfolded a light-computer across his lap.
He tilted the screen toward Juezhou, revealing Xie Wenchen’s complete profile.
When he heard that Juezhou wanted to keep someone, he was still on the spacecraft. His subordinates were highly capable and had obtained Xie Wenchen’s full dossier quickly.
He specifically showed Juezhou the “bad” parts, which even included how many times Xie Wenchen had been scolded by teachers in elementary school.
“You’ve grown up. It’s normal to want to be in a relationship, but don’t mess around with these ‘sugar baby’ games,” Jiang Henian said tonelessly.
After a pause, he added, “Don’t touch… wine or lust. You are still young; it will harm your health.”
“…Brother Nian, I’m twenty-two.”
“You should wait until you are at least thirty before touching those things,” Jiang Henian said solemnly.
Juezhou could tell that Jiang Henian was currently unhappy.
It wasn’t quite at the level of rage yet; it was mostly disappointment that Juezhou was following a bad path, along with some other emotions Juezhou couldn’t quite decipher.
Could it be that Jiang Henian fell in love with Xie Wenchen at first sight, just like in the original book, and is now secretly jealous?
To maintain his persona as a wicked antagonist, Juezhou knew he should continue to frame Xie Wenchen. He said, sounding both guilty and remorseful: “Brother Nian, believe me, he was the one who seduced me. I’m such a chaste person; how could I possibly mess around with a man in someone else’s house?”
After saying this, he silently apologized to Xie Wenchen in his heart.
To appear sincere, he curled his eyes into a smile, hugged Jiang Henian’s waist, and rubbed his head against his shoulder.
Jiang Henian adjusted his glasses and gave him a faint look.
After not seeing him for a year, Juezhou’s appearance hadn’t changed much. The car light cast a small shadow on the tip of his porcelain-white nose.
The fingers clutching Jiang Henian were tight; with a bit of pressure, his knuckles turned a faint pink. His eyes, framed by long lashes, avoided Jiang Henian’s gaze out of guilt, his light-colored pupils shimmering with a watery light.
It really didn’t look like Xie Wenchen was the one seducing him.
He didn’t know where the boy had learned this bad habit—acting spoiled the moment he did something wrong.
Brushing away the stray thoughts rising in his mind, Jiang Henian said in a deep voice, “Tomorrow, you will help me transcribe books.”
Juezhou breathed a sigh of relief, knowing he had finally cleared this hurdle with his brother. He tugged at Jiang Henian’s sleeve and swayed it. “As for my parents…”
Jiang Henian stopped looking at him and stared straight ahead. “I’ll keep it from them for you.”
Juezhou immediately beamed. He leaned half his body against Jiang Henian’s shoulder and began chattering about everything that had happened recently.
Juezhou was a shut-in and rarely went out, so he didn’t have much of importance to say. He simply recounted the news he’d read and the boring jokes he’d heard over the past few days.
A mecha manga he had been following recently was being adapted into a TV series. The investors valued the IP highly and had even commissioned new mecha models tailored specifically after the prototypes in the manga.
Juezhou had saved the pictures on his phone and held them up for Jiang Henian to see.
“You like it?” Jiang Henian asked.
Juezhou nodded quickly.
Surely Jiang Henian would understand the hint and help him buy one of the new mecha models.
This was the height of being spoiled; because he knew the other person would always fulfill his requests, Juezhou never felt embarrassed about relying on others.
Unexpectedly, the next morning, a contract appeared on his bedroom desk.
Juezhou rubbed his groggy eyes and read it three times. He saw his own name listed as Party A, and the name of the TV drama production crew as Party B.
Clutching the contract, he walked out of his room and looked down from the second-floor railing.
Jiang Henian and Mother Gu were sitting together watching a melodramatic soap opera. Mother Gu was weeping, and Jiang Henian was patiently comforting her with a tissue.
Jiang Henian had been raised by Juezhou’s parents. Even without a blood relation, he had always treated them as his own.
Although Juezhou had the mission of becoming a “universally hated” character, he didn’t treat himself entirely as a tool. He took his family relationships seriously and treated those who were good to him with kindness.
Consequently, all his relatives were very fond of him.
“Zhouzhou, why are you up so early?” Mother Gu asked.
It was already 8:30 AM.
“Brother Nian, what is this?” Juezhou leaned over the railing, waving the contract in his hand.
Jiang Henian looked up at him. “Don’t you like that show? I invested forty million credit points in your name.”
Juezhou: ?!! Brother, it’s not that I like the show—I’m just greedy for the mecha!
