- Chapter 23 - Lost and Found
Two years later.
Canada.
Luo Nianshu was quickly searching through data in the studio, filling out client information while picking up her phone to dial a number.
“Hello, Grandma, how have you been recently? Did you receive the money I sent home?”
Her grandmother’s warm voice came from the other end, smiling kindly, “I did. By the way, Nianshu, I haven’t told you before, but not long ago a very beautiful young lady came to our home. She took care of me for quite a while and said she was your friend. You have to thank her properly if you meet her someday.”
Friend? Luo Nianshu frowned slightly, pressing the phone tightly between her shoulder and ear, her fingers never stopping on the keyboard, “What’s her name?”
Two years ago, she had escaped to Canada with 3 million yuan on her card and had since put down roots here.
She had changed all her contact details and cut off all connections with her friends back in China. How could a friend still have found her grandma’s address?
“She didn’t say her name, but she was really beautiful, like a fairy. Oh, she also asked where you are now.”
Asked where she was?
Luo Nianshu’s heart skipped a beat. She immediately stopped working and grabbed the phone again, “Did you tell her where I am, Grandma?”
“No. Didn’t you tell me not to tell anyone? I just said I don’t know.”
Even though she was thousands of miles away, hearing her grandmother’s voice, Luo Nianshu could picture the kind expression on her face.
“That’s good.” She breathed a sigh of relief but still reminded, “Grandma, you absolutely cannot reveal any information about me to outsiders.”
“Don’t worry, silly girl. Grandma knows what’s appropriate.”
Luo Nianshu smiled.
Though old, her grandma was very open minded and smart. The two of them often felt more like close friends than grandmother and granddaughter.
After hanging up, Luo Nianshu continued her work.
Since coming abroad, her job was still helping people escape from forced marriages.
She wasn’t particularly talented at much else, but she was good at causing a fuss and running fast—so she made full use of that advantage.
“Nianshu, how’s today’s order going?” Jiang Chengzhi brought a cup of coffee and placed it on the table, then gently squeezed Luo Nianshu’s shoulder.
Jiang Chengzhi and Luo Nianshu both worked at this marriage escape studio.
“Not bad. Look, the weddings that were botched a few days ago, the customers gave pretty high ratings.”
“Really?” Jiang Chengzhi leaned in to check the computer screen, then smiled at Luo Nianshu, “You’re truly the leader in the wedding prank world. A big part of why my boyfriend and I could be together was thanks to you.”
Luo Nianshu touched her nose and made a “V” sign with her fingers.
Jiang Chengzhi and his boyfriend had been in love for years, but his family didn’t approve and insisted he marry a girl with family background. So, after discussions with his boyfriend and the bride, the three of them planned an escape wedding ceremony. Luo Nianshu arranged the plan: during the wedding, the bride would escape following the route they designed, and then Jiang Chengzhi would seize the chance to ask his family again to marry his boyfriend.
Since that wedding, Luo Nianshu and Jiang Chengzhi had become more than just colleagues; they were confidants supporting each other in a foreign land.
“I really don’t understand why there are so many forced weddings in this world.” Luo Nianshu took a sip of coffee and rubbed her temples softly.
Her workload was huge lately, causing frequent headaches.
“You’re not getting any younger. When will we get your wedding invitation?”
Her wedding invitation… Luo Nianshu’s eyes flickered, “I might not get married.”
Jiang Chengzhi frowned, “Why? You don’t have someone you like?”
“Let’s not talk about that.” Luo Nianshu’s face darkened as she resumed typing, using work to avoid the topic.
“Alright.” Jiang Chengzhi shrugged, “How about going to a bar tonight to relax?”
Luo Nianshu replied half-heartedly, “Okay.”
Jiang Chengzhi made an “OK” sign and patted her shoulder, “Remember to dress beautifully. Maybe tonight at the bar you’ll meet your destiny.”
Luo Nianshu chuckled and gave him a look that said “You’re unbelievable.”
Destiny? Forget it.
Tang Fu was supporting the drunken Qiao Jinyan as they walked toward the apartment building.
The new film they were shooting in Canada was nearing completion, and tonight there was a social event. Qiao Jinyan drank too much and was stumbling.
In the past two years, Qiao Jinyan had worked harder than ever to regain her peak status.
Since that fire incident, Qiao Jinyan seemed like a completely different person.
On screen, she was even more enchanting and alluring; off screen, she was colder and more ruthless—especially with an obsessive determination for fame.
Tang Fu didn’t understand why but didn’t dare ask.
Yet Qiao Jinyan was still Qiao Jinyan. Two years later, she had once again become a top star in the entertainment industry, even more famous than before.
Those who once blackened or insulted her had all fallen under her spell. She was nearly a zero-criticism celebrity now.
Everyone loved her.
Yes, no one didn’t love Qiao Jinyan.
Tang Fu’s gaze flickered as she looked again at Qiao Jinyan’s stunningly beautiful face.
No one didn’t love Qiao Jinyan.
“Senior, let me help you upstairs.” Tang Fu supported Qiao Jinyan at the entrance of the apartment, looking at her expectantly.
Though to the outside world they appeared as the perfect on-screen couple, almost everyone in the industry knew it was all an act.
For two years, Qiao Jinyan never once held Tang Fu’s hand off set; once filming was over, they returned to a polite, distant relationship.
Thinking of this, Tang Fu felt a pang of disappointment.
Qiao Jinyan collapsed against Tang Fu, eyes looking down, lost in thought.
After a moment, Qiao Jinyan murmured, “Hmm.”
That “Hmm” awakened all of Tang Fu’s feelings. She eagerly looked up at Qiao Jinyan and said quickly, “I’ll help you up.”
She controlled her excitement, slowly helping Qiao Jinyan up the stairs step by step.
Qiao Jinyan leaned on her, her scent intoxicating Tang Fu, who blushed deeply.
The door opened, even this temporary apartment was neatly arranged.
Tang Fu helped Qiao Jinyan to the bed and let her lie down.
“I’m going to take a shower.” Tang Fu’s voice trembled shyly.
Qiao Jinyan didn’t reply, lying on the bed with one arm covering half her face, lost in thought.
The bathroom door opened, clothes dropping to the floor, water flowing loudly.
Ten minutes later, Tang Fu came out wrapped in a pure white towel, shyly looking at Qiao Jinyan sitting by the window.
Qiao Jinyan had one leg dangling, the other half curled on the chair. A cup of hangover tea sat on the table.
“Jinyan, are you going to take a shower?” Tang Fu nervously called her name, as she always respectfully called her “Senior” privately.
Qiao Jinyan didn’t speak, her deep eyes fixed on Tang Fu.
Tang Fu looked down at her own clean toes, unsure what to do, stammering, “If you don’t want to shower, that’s okay, I can…”
“Do you know how to cook noodles?” Qiao Jinyan suddenly asked.
“What?” Tang Fu was startled.
“Do you know how to cook noodles?” Qiao Jinyan asked again.
Tang Fu shook her head, confused.
She didn’t understand how knowing to cook noodles was related to not going to bed tonight.
Qiao Jinyan turned her head and looked out the window, resting her chin on her hand.
Silence fell again.
Tang Fu panicked and quickly went to her side, “Even if I don’t know how to cook noodles, I can learn.”
“Go home, Tang Fu.” Qiao Jinyan turned and put Tang Fu’s coat around her.
Tang Fu shivered, tears welling up, “Why?”
Qiao Jinyan didn’t answer.
Tang Fu asked, “Is it because of Luo Nianshu?”
Qiao Jinyan’s eyes darkened, looking at her like a blade, “Don’t mention that name again.”
“Tang Fu, it’s been two years! Two years! When you were lying in the hospital bed, she abandoned you. Someone like her isn’t worth your thoughts.”
“Tang Fu.” Qiao Jinyan’s voice turned cold for the first time, “Don’t make me hate you.”
Tang Fu froze in place.
After a long moment, she grabbed her clothes and slammed the door as she left.
Qiao Jinyan sat on the bed, running her hand through her wavy hair.
Exhausted like never before.
The phone rang it was the film crew staff. Qiao Jinyan answered, but her mind was in a mess.
“Hello, Jinyan, do you want to come to the bar? There are several big directors here. I can introduce you.”
“Okay.” Qiao Jinyan didn’t hesitate.
Anything that could help her career, she accepted.
She changed into clean clothes, put on light makeup in front of the mirror, grabbed her black purse, and left the room.
Inside the bar.
Qiao Jinyan, wearing a tight dress, came to the booth and greeted several directors.
“Beautiful.” One director couldn’t help but admire, “No wonder you’re the hottest actress now, your future is limitless.”
“Director Liu, you flatter me.” Qiao Jinyan smiled faintly, seductively brushing her hair aside, revealing her white, slender swan-like neck.
She adjusted her skirt and sat down, but suddenly paused halfway.
Qiao Jinyan slowly stood up.
“What’s wrong?” Director Liu asked confusedly.
Qiao Jinyan said nothing and stared fixedly toward the bar.
A woman with a low ponytail, wearing a loose suit, was sitting there drinking with a man.
That suit was the one Qiao Jinyan had personally given to a woman before.
Qiao Jinyan’s eyes reddened.
She clenched her numb hands tightly, then slowly relaxed them.
Two years later, she finally found her.
“Jinyan, where are you going?” voices called behind her.
Qiao Jinyan ignored them and sat down at the bar beside the woman, placing her glass down heavily.
She said to the woman beside her:
“You disappeared for two years with huge debts. When do you plan to pay me back the 30 million you owe me, Luo Nianshu?”
