Chapter 14.1: I Didn’t Expect You to Have This Kind of Hobby.
Nan Jianxue was still sitting in his seat, craning his neck to look around, when his hand was suddenly grabbed.
Warm fingers pressed against his wrist. Nan Jianxue instinctively tried to pull away, but quickly realizing his reaction was perhaps a bit too much, he frowned and puffed up his chest to ask: “What are you doing!”
Liang Qifeng pulled his hand back to take his pulse and asked, “Do you feel unwell anywhere?”
Nan Jianxue realized what was happening then. He froze for a moment, then shook his head: “No. You’re not a doctor; can you actually see anything?”
“The simple things,” Liang Qifeng said, his brow furrowing. “Let’s go back first. I have detoxification pills at home, and it’s closer to the Imperial Palace.”
Nan Jianxue was still hesitant: “But here…”
“I’m here,” Nan Jianlan, who was sitting beside him, spoke up. Her expression was grim, clearly understanding Liang Qifeng’s implication. With a dark face, she said, “I will definitely find the person who administered the poison.”
Nan Jianxue thought about it. He didn’t understand criminal investigation, nor did he understand medicine; staying here was indeed useless. He agreed, stood up, and straightened his hem: “Then let’s go.”
After speaking, seeing that Liang Qifeng’s expression remained unpleasant, he smiled and said in a low voice: “I think you’re overthinking it. Look, I’m perfectly fine even now.”
Liang Qifeng’s expression did not improve. He took Nan Jianxue’s hand and led him straight outside.
Seeing this, Ji Zheyan hurriedly followed: “What happened? Did someone use poison? Is Xiao Xue poisoned too?”
He was completely out of the loop, only vaguely sensing something from the scene and Liang Qifeng’s reaction, so he hurried up to ask.
Liang Qifeng didn’t answer him. He simply led Nan Jianxue out, planning in his heart to have someone go to the palace to invite the Imperial Physician to the mansion.
However, at the very last moment, a problem arose.
Before the two could step out the door, Nan Jianxue’s footsteps faltered.
Liang Qifeng looked back and saw his brow furrowed, his hand clutched over his stomach, and his face pale.
“Does it hurt?” Liang Qifeng hurried over to support him. “Stomach ache?”
Nan Jianxue nodded with a white face. He had been fine just a moment ago, but suddenly his stomach felt as if someone had stabbed him and was ruthlessly twisting the blade inside. It hurt like death.
Liang Qifeng could only pick him up and return to where they had been sitting, saying softly: “They’ve gone to call a doctor. Just bear with it a bit longer.”
Nan Jianxue bit his lip and nodded very slightly, but his eyes were already moist, looking at Liang Qifeng with a gaze full of intense grievance.
Liang Qifeng didn’t dare move him recklessly, his brow furrowed as he thought of possible suspects. If they found the person, they might find an antidote.
Thinking of this, he stood up and walked to Nan Jianlan’s side: “Princess Anping.”
Nan Jianlan was looking at the several poisoned people. Seeing him walk over, her expression changed, and her gaze shifted to Nan Jianxue. Seeing him sitting there with a pale face, her eyes filled with murderous intent: “I’ve already sent people to investigate everyone in the manor.”
“I’ll go take a look,” Liang Qifeng said. “You look after him.”
He turned and left after saying that.
Nan Jianlan couldn’t leave, so she could only let Nan Jianfei go over.
But while it was called “looking after,” there wasn’t much she could do; Nan Jianfei didn’t even dare touch him carelessly.
“Imperial Sister…” Nan Jianxue felt the pain in his stomach getting worse and could only talk to the person beside him to distract himself. “Where is Liang Qifeng?”
“You’re hurting this much and you’re still thinking about him?” Nan Jianfei helped him lean against her and said softly, “I thought you didn’t like him.”
“I don’t… don’t like him…” Nan Jianxue lowered his eyes, his voice getting smaller. “He’s always… always making me angry, wuu…”
“Alright, alright, don’t talk anymore.” Nan Jianfei touched his hair heart-warmingly and said gently, “I’ll scold him for you when he gets back.”
Nan Jianxue didn’t want to talk, but if he didn’t, his attention would fall entirely on his stomach. He continued: “He isn’t afraid of being scolded.”
Nan Jianfei didn’t reply, her brow furrowed as she thought of something unknown.
Nan Jianxue called her softly: “Imperial Sister…”
“Hmm?” Nan Jianfei looked down, stroking his hair gently, comforting him in a low voice, “It won’t hurt in a little while.”
Nan Jianxue bit his lip and didn’t respond. It wouldn’t be that easy.
If Liang Qifeng found the antidote, it would be fine, but if not… he could only pray this medicine wasn’t the fatal kind.
Just as this thought flashed by, a commotion broke out in the crowd, and someone even cried out in alarm.
Nan Jianxue struggled to lift his eyelids to look. He saw one of the people who had just been poisoned suddenly collapse, seemingly spitting up blood.
The crowd was blocking the view, and just as Nan Jianxue was about to check again, his eyes were suddenly covered.
“Don’t look,” Nan Jianfei said softly. “Everything is fine.”
Nan Jianxue pursed his lips, his heart feeling cold. It seemed it was something fatal.
Knowing this, he actually calmed down. He stopped talking but didn’t sleep, occasionally calling “Imperial Sister” to let Nan Jianfei know he was still conscious.
But while conscious, he was gradually losing clarity.
The pain in his stomach intensified, as if his internal organs were being brutally slashed by a knife. The pain gradually made his brain unable to think; he only vaguely remembered the antidote and not letting his sister worry.
By the time Liang Qifeng returned, there was not a trace of blood left on Nan Jianxue’s face. The lip rouge on his tightly bitten lips had been rubbed off, revealing a similarly deathly pale color beneath.
“Did you find it?” Nan Jianxue heard Nan Jianfei ask Liang Qifeng.
“Found them, but it’s useless,” Liang Qifeng replied with a dark face. “The person is dead, and there was no antidote on them. I’ve had the manor searched thoroughly, it’s just…”
He didn’t finish, but Nan Jianfei understood, saying anxiously: “Then what about the doctor? This thing…” She paused, not continuing, only throwing a glance toward the crowd.
Liang Qifeng took a small bottle from his robes.
Nan Jianfei froze: “This is…”
“Something to preserve life,” Liang Qifeng explained with a frown. “It’s made of poisonous substances and has severe side effects. If all else fails, let him take one first.”
Nan Jianfei hesitated upon hearing this: “What side effects?”
“It will damage the foundation; it shouldn’t be taken unless absolutely necessary,” Liang Qifeng said. “My people have already gone back to fetch detoxification pills; I’m just afraid he won’t last.”
“I can do it…” Nan Jianxue said softly. “Let him take it…”
Liang Qifeng glanced at the crowd, gave a soft “Mm,” stroked his hair, and said: “You still have time to think about others; it seems you can indeed hold on.”
His tone was actually very gentle, but Nan Jianxue sensed a prickly edge and couldn’t help but frown, reaching out to hit him.
However, his strength was usually not great, and now it was even lighter it didn’t feel like a strike, but more like he had brushed against Liang Qifeng.
The space between Liang Qifeng’s eyebrows instantly smoothed out a little.
Nan Jianxue’s consciousness grew even murkier. He vaguely thought he heard Liang Qifeng say something, but he couldn’t hear clearly and could only give a muddled response.
The world suddenly became very dark, and he could feel nothing but pain.
He even felt as if the pain was spreading, slowly diffusing from his organs to his limbs. In the end, his whole being felt soaked in poisonous water, so painful he couldn’t even feel his body.
After an unknown amount of time, he felt the pain gradually subside a little.
Something slid down his throat. He didn’t know what it was, only instinctively swallowing it into his stomach.
After a while, the pain on his body lessened once more, and he gradually regained control of his body.
“He’s awake.” The familiar voice sounded in his ear, and Nan Jianxue called out in the next instant: “Imperial Sister.”
“I’m here.” Nan Jianfei’s voice sounded again. Her soft hand touched his cheek, quickly moved to his forehead, and finally rested on his hair, stroking it gently.
Nan Jianxue struggled to lift his eyelids and met Nan Jianfei’s joyful gaze, so he called again: “Imperial Sister.”
After calling her, he looked around and saw several people surrounding him. He was momentarily dazed: “Where is this?” He then noticed the small table pushed not far away with a few pieces of pastry he had left. He immediately understood: “Why am I… still here?”
Nan Jianfei laughed: “Have you been driven silly by the pain?”
Nan Jianxue was silent for a moment before asking: “What… time is it… now?”
“You were unconscious for half an hour,” Liang Qifeng said softly. “Does it still hurt?”
Nan Jianxue nodded. It naturally still hurt, it just wasn’t so unbearable.
“What about the others?” Nan Jianxue asked with a frown. “Is the poison neutralized?”
Liang Qifeng shook his head: “The toxicity is only suppressed. We fed you all detoxification pills; how to fully cure it still needs research.”
Nan Jianxue lowered his eyes, listless and not answering.
Liang Qifeng said: “Go back first?”
Nan Jianxue shook his head: “What happened to the person who used the poison?”
“Dead,” Liang Qifeng said with a heavy face. “Because of the banquet, the manor hired many temporary workers for cleaning. Logically, they shouldn’t have been able to touch these things, but…”
But if one truly wanted to strike, a chance could always be found; after all, this was just a small banquet, and supervision wasn’t that strict.
Nan Jianxue’s finger hooked Liang Qifeng’s sleeve.
Liang Qifeng bent down and asked, “What is it?”
“Assassin,” Nan Jianxue was still suffering, his speech broken and very soft. “Ghost Market.”
He spoke vaguely, but Liang Qifeng understood.
He shook his head and explained softly: “It’s not certain yet, but it’s possible. They…” He wanted to explain further, but seeing Nan Jianxue’s face as pale as golden paper, he stopped. “These are small matters; you just rest in peace.”
Nan Jianxue didn’t want to rest. He struggled to sit up straight and leaned toward Liang Qifeng, whispering: “If they are the same group… they were prepared long ago.”
His voice grew softer and softer, like a murmur. Liang Qifeng had to lean very close to hear, so close he could clearly feel the warmth of his breath.
“I know.” Liang Qifeng turned his head slightly uncomfortably. “I’ll handle it, you…”
“I can’t sleep.” Nan Jianxue’s eyelids drooped, and his already soft voice turned even softer, sounding very aggrieved. “It hurts…”
Just now he had passed out from pain, but now the pain was agonizing; he could endure it, but he couldn’t sleep. It was torture.
Liang Qifeng looked at the doctor beside him again: “Check him again.”
The doctor complied and took Nan Jianxue’s pulse again.
“It’s alright,” the doctor said. “It’s just that this poison is fierce; even if suppressed, it’s hard to bear. It must be neutralized as soon as possible, otherwise, no matter how good the Princess’s foundation is, dragging it out might make recovery difficult.”
Liang Qifeng’s expression grew more solemn.
