Chapter 6: If Someone Remembers with Me, It Will Be…
The pouring rain, accompanied by the wind blowing into the building, made Xia Shinan shiver from the cold, and it also pulled her back from almost zoning out.
What did Tang Yin just say?
“Are you saying you want to bribe me with this umbrella…?” Xia Shinan processed it and asked.
Tang Yin was stunned for a moment, then smiled: “If you think so, then so be it.”
Xia Shinan was already holding the handle of the umbrella, which felt warm the place where Tang Yin’s hand had touched. She suddenly remembered the moment during the audition when Tang Yin looked at her, and when that hand gently stroked her hair.
“Have you studied acting before?” Xia Shinan asked curiously.
Tang Yin looked up at the sky, and hearing the question, she turned to look at Xia Shinan: “If I haven’t, does that mean I can’t be selected?”
“Of course not! I haven’t studied it either,” Xia Shinan shook her head, then said seriously, “I just think your acting is really good. Since you haven’t studied it, you must have a natural talent for it.”
Tang Yin smiled upon hearing her words: “Thank you for the compliment.”
In fact, what talent was there? It was just that, to survive and to protect herself and her grandmother since childhood, she would put on different masks when facing different people.
Cheerful, passionate, or gloomy, indifferent.
Over time, she didn’t know who she truly was. Perhaps all of these were a part of her, blending within her body and soul, contradictory yet self-consistent.
Seeing that Tang Yin wasn’t speaking, Xia Shinan just looked at her until another gust of wind broke the silence.
She felt that Tang Yin was just lacking confidence, so she offered affirmation. “Your acting is excellent. You will definitely be selected.”
Tang Yin stood casually, leaning against the wall behind her, showing a bit of that lazy charm from the photo, “Is that so? Student Xia is so certain. It seems you’ve accepted my kind gesture and will put in a good word for me?”
Xia Shinan tucked the wind-blown hair behind her ear, “I will indeed speak well of you, but it’s because you have the ability, not for this umbrella. I’m very fair and just!”
Tang Yin was amused by her earnestness and asked, “One umbrella isn’t enough. Well, you fell down the last time we climbed the wall, and I was your human cushion. Is that favor enough?”
Xia Shinan’s eyes widened.
She… she really was Tang Yin from that night!
“You remember!” Xia Shinan looked at her happily, her eyes full of joy: “I thought you had forgotten!”
“How could I forget?” Tang Yin raised an eyebrow, “The wall wasn’t even high, yet you were scared to death, accidentally fell, landed on me, and even touched my chest.”
!! She didn’t!
“That wasn’t touching! It was accidentally pressing down!” Xia Shinan hastily explained, “I only heard the voice of the security guard, and then I accidentally…” Before she could finish, she saw Tang Yin’s smile and stopped talking, smiling along.
“In short, I’m very happy that you still remember what happened that night.”
Tang Yin’s smile was inscrutable. She looked at Xia Shinan and asked, “Why?”
Xia Shinan looked up at the passersby in the distant rain, her tone light and airy: “That night was probably the most unconventional thing I’ve ever done, but I found it very interesting.”
“I don’t want to forget it. It would just be better if someone remembered it with me.”
Tang Yin looked at the girl in front of her. Whether it was the weather or the aura emanating from within her, she carried a strong sense of melancholy.
This… shouldn’t belong to a pampered rich girl who had everything.
For a moment, from the bottom of her heart, she said earnestly, “Okay, I will remember. Even if you forget, I won’t.”
“Mhm!” Xia Shinan nodded, genuinely happy.
Tang Yin felt her happiness and, after a two-second pause, shifted her gaze, looking at the distance as well.
The rain came quickly and left quickly. A few minutes later, it began to lessen to a drizzle.
“The rain has let up a lot. Shall we go?” Tang Yin asked.
“What?”
Xia Shinan looked at her blankly.
In those two minutes, Tang Yin hadn’t spoken to her, and she had started staring into the distance.
Tang Yin smiled: “Is your special skill spacing out? I said… the rain has lessened. I’ll walk you back to your dorm.”
“Oh, oh…” Xia Shinan nodded, then shook her head, “No need to see me off. It’s too much trouble…”
Tang Yin curved her beautiful lips, “You said I was bribing you, so of course, I have to walk you to your dorm. Come on, if we wait any longer for the rain to stop completely, I’ll have come here for nothing.”
Xia Shinan giggled, “Alright!”
The air after the heavy rain was exceptionally fresh. The cool breeze was very comfortable. The dark clouds gradually dispersed, and the sun, unable to hide completely, showed a little light. Tang Yin held the umbrella and walked side-by-side with Xia Shinan toward the dorm.
Xia Shinan’s leather shoes made a crisp sound on the wet ground, like a pleasant piece of music.
Along the way, Xia Shinan talked to her a lot, about the film club and the competition…
Tang Yin listened attentively, simultaneously tilting the not-so-large umbrella more towards Xia Shinan’s side.
“I was actually worried that the audition would be very difficult and that people would have a bias against someone who joined midway like me, but it seems I worried too much.”
“How could that be!” Xia Shinan smiled at her, “Everyone is very nice!”
Is that so?
Tang Yin twitched her lips, her gaze directed into the distance: “Have you ever heard the saying that when a person becomes rich and influential, they will find that everyone around them is nice?”
Xia Shinan was stunned, then thought of her roommates. “That saying isn’t true… it’s not always like that.”
Then, her steps stopped.
She truly used to believe her roommates were all very nice, but that unintentional conversation made her realize it was all because she was rich.
Tang Yin withdrew her gaze and looked at Xia Shinan sideways, “What’s wrong?”
Xia Shinan looked at Tang Yin, “I was wrong. You’re right. But… good people can also be faked.”
Tang Yin felt her heart suddenly tighten. What did she mean by that? Had she figured out that Tang Yin approached her with a purpose?
“You…”
Xia Shinan smiled at her: “But Tang Yin, you are genuinely nice!”
Tang Yin breathed a sigh of relief, immediately followed by an inexplicable sense of guilt.
No, her kindness is all faked.
“Thank you for walking me back!” Xia Shinan interrupted her thoughts, “We’ve reached my dorm.”
“You’ve said that many times,” Tang Yin said softly, lowering her eyes. The next moment, she felt her phone vibrate. She took it out of her pants pocket, raised an eyebrow, and showed the phone to Xia Shinan, “See, the bribe worked. The President has already sent me a message.”
Xia Shinan nodded: “I told you you could do it!”
Tang Yin hummed, and then slowly spoke: “Then please guide me more in the future, little Mi Jia.”
Xia Shinan paused, self-consciously touched her earlobe, and mimicked her words: “Please guide me more, little Xiaoying.”
“I’m leaving. Goodbye.” Tang Yin said and waved goodbye to her, then turned to leave.
“Goodbye!” Xia Shinan also waved, but the next second, she noticed that the right shoulder of Tang Yin’s shirt was soaked…
Tang Yin’s dorm was not far; she reached it after walking for a while. She returned to the dorm, changed out of her half-soaked T-shirt, and prepared to wash it.
“Tang Yin? Why are your clothes wet? Don’t you have an umbrella?” Her roommate, holding her phone and playing a game, tilted her head and asked curiously.
“I saw a distressed rabbit, so I shared the umbrella with her,” Tang Yin replied. Her phone on the table lit up. She opened it and saw that a junior had added her to the microfilm group. The group name: Brave for First Place.
There was also a friend request notification. The profile picture was a cartoon rabbit sleeping on a cloud.
WeChat name: Xia Xia.
Her intuition told her it had to be Xia Shinan.
Tang Yin stared blankly at her phone. Could it be too smooth? She thought getting a rich girl’s contact information would not be an easy task.
“I asked you a question!”
Tang Yin accepted the request, put down her phone, and looked up, “Hmm? What did you say?”
Her roommate rolled her eyes at her: “What distressed rabbit? And sharing an umbrella? A rabbit spirit?”
Tang Yin raised an eyebrow: “Yeah, you just didn’t see her.”
Recalling Xia Shinan from today, her slightly curly hair that showed a faint brown color in the sun, wearing a light blue long dress, and white leather shoes—the whole person was obedient and clean. Wasn’t she a rabbit spirit?
Her eyes didn’t lie; surprise, shock, and joy would all be displayed without hesitation… Well, a good girl who was pampered in every way would naturally be like this.
Tang Yin also thought back to her third year of high school. Xia Shinan back then was more innocent and naive than now, even more like a little rabbit that hadn’t gained sentience.
Her roommate was still puzzled about who the rabbit spirit was.
“Wait, that’s not your umbrella, is it? Don’t you usually keep a folding umbrella in your bag?”
Tang Yin glanced at her phone, moved her fingers, and then looked at her roommate, slowly saying with a smile: “Oh… I forgot.”
Returning to the dorm, no one was there.
Since the BBQ incident that day, the three roommates had noticeably distanced themselves from Xia Shinan, even… isolating her. They didn’t talk to her in the dorm, didn’t call her to eat or attend class, walked separately on the road, and sat together in class.
They probably thought this would make Xia Shinan feel bad.
If it were before, she would indeed be troubled, but now she wasn’t.
Since she had seen her roommates for who they were, she understood. If they didn’t want to talk, then they didn’t have to. This was also good; she didn’t have to rack her brains trying to figure out how to coexist harmoniously. Instead, she felt relaxed and at ease.
Her phone vibrated. Xia Shinan glanced at it. The small microfilm group was lively. They had added Tang Yin to the group.
Duan Xiaofei: Let’s give a round of applause to welcome Tang Yin! Our other female lead is finally in place!
Then, a screen full of welcoming emojis followed. Xia Shinan chose the cutest little rabbit clapping emoji to welcome her. She opened the window and looked out. The rain had stopped. She wondered if Tang Yin had returned to her dorm and changed her clothes.
Xia Shinan wanted to know the answer but felt embarrassed to ask in the group, so she requested to add her as a friend.
Soon, she received a notification that the addition was successful, and Tang Yin replied in the group:
Thank you, everyone. Let’s work hard together in the future.
Xia Shinan quickly sent a private message.
Tang Yin, did you return to your dorm? When you left, I realized your clothes were wet. You should change quickly! I feel so bad!
The message was sent, and Tang Yin quickly replied.
It’s no big deal. I’m healthy, and I’ve already changed.
Xia Shinan: That’s great! I must buy you milk tea! Or coffee is fine too 0v0.
Tang Yin: Sure, next time.
Next time…
Xia Shinan quickly opened the group files. The next meeting was the script reading session, which was scheduled for Friday evening. That was still several days away.
The script reading session on Friday arrived as scheduled, but considering there was an exam over the weekend, only Xia Shinan, Tang Yin, Director Duan Xiaofei, and Scriptwriter Weiba were called to gather today. The other supporting cast would be arranged for next time.
For some reason, Duan Xiaofei suddenly changed the meeting location from the activity room to a hot pot restaurant on the East Gate Food Street.
Thinking they were going to eat hot pot, Xia Shinan changed out of her white dress, chose a light brown knitted shirt and jeans, and hurried out, carrying that transparent umbrella.
Chen Tingting was watching a TV drama on her computer, but her eyes kept secretly watching Xia Shinan. As soon as the person left, she immediately stood up.
“Is this Xia Shinan dating someone? She was so picky about her clothes, and then changed her entire outfit before leaving.”
Miao Miao moved her eyes from her phone, frowning: “Who knows? It would be great if she was. It would save me the trouble of helping Qu Bo.”
Chen Tingting was confused. Miao Miao handed her the phone. After reading it, she was a little reluctant, “Why does he need your help to confess? Didn’t you say your relationship with Xia Shinan wasn’t good?”
Miao Miao’s expression was unhappy. She didn’t answer, just looked helpless: “What can I do? He already begged me…”
It seems I need to find an opportunity to restore my relationship with Xia Shinan first.
Xia Shinan ran to the hot pot restaurant, panting, her face flushed. She looked at the two people already seated and apologized profusely: “I’m so sorry. I just missed a campus bus and had to wait a while.”
Weiba: “It’s fine, it’s fine. You don’t need to rush!”
“Wipe your sweat.”
A hand with well-defined knuckles handed over a tissue. Xia Shinan was stunned for a moment, took the tissue, and smiled: “Thank you, Tang Yin! Oh, and your umbrella!”
Tang Yin glanced at the umbrella handed to her with both hands, took it, and placed it aside, “Thank you.”
“I’m the one who should thank you…” Xia Shinan whispered.
“What umbrella?” Weiba asked blankly.
Xia Shinan: “Well, it’s…”
Tang Yin: “It’s nothing.”
Xia Shinan paused, glanced at Tang Yin, and then nodded, “Yes, it’s nothing.” It seemed Tang Yin didn’t want to tell others about borrowing the umbrella. Although she didn’t know the reason, it was fine not to say anything.
Xia Shinan wiped the sweat from her forehead and then asked curiously, “Where is the President?”
“A braised food shop opened next door. She said she’d buy some for us to try. Shinan, do you want some?”
“Um… maybe a little, but not too spicy,” Xia Shinan thought for a moment and said.
Weiba stood up: “Alright, I’ll go tell her.”
“Okay…”
Once Weiba left, only she and Tang Yin remained at the table.
The sudden silence made the atmosphere awkward. She decided to say something, but before she could speak, she heard Tang Yin cough a few times.
Xia Shinan was startled. She looked at her cautiously: “Tang Yin, do you have a cold?”
Tang Yin covered her mouth with one hand, “It’s nothing serious. I just caught a slight chill the other day.”
The other day… wasn’t that the day she gave the umbrella to her?! A sense of guilt suddenly bubbled up inside her. Her tone was tense and serious, and her face was full of concern: “Is it serious? Did you take any medicine?!”
Tang Yin shook her head, “It’s not serious. It’s just a mild cold. It will get better in a few days. I’m too lazy to take medicine.”
Not taking medicine means it will take longer to get better. How can that be okay?
Xia Shinan bit her lip, glancing at Tang Yin.
She looked much more haggard today. Her lips were pale, and she wasn’t smiling as much as before. It must be because she didn’t have much energy due to the cold.
It’s all because of me. Otherwise, how would she have caught a cold?
Xia Shinan looked outside the restaurant, “I’m going to find the President. Tang Yin, you sit here.”
Tang Yin covered her mouth and coughed again, “Okay.”
Only when Xia Shinan left did she put her hand down.
The cold was real, but the coughing was feigned. In fact, she was almost recovered, but she had stayed up late last night working on a presentation for a project, which was why she looked a little run down now.
But the good girl seems to care about her a lot. Tang Yin curved her lips into a smile.
Duan Xiaofei and Weiba returned, holding the purchased braised food. “This one is extra spicy, and this one is mildly spicy. Tang Yin, which one do you want?”
“Extra spicy,” Tang Yin replied, glancing behind them, “Where is Xia Shinan?”
“Isn’t she in the restaurant?” Weiba also looked around curiously, “Maybe she went to the restroom?”
“Perhaps,” Tang Yin replied casually, closing her eyes briefly. Her beautiful almond-shaped eyes focused on her phone. She turned the screen on and off, momentarily unable to guess what Xia Shinan was up to.
“Wow! This extra spicy one is… too spicy! Water, water, water!” Duan Xiaofei took a bite of the braised food, was immediately choked by the spiciness, and couldn’t speak clearly. Seeing that there was no tea on the table, she immediately got up to look for some, only to see Xia Shinan approaching with a cup of water in her hands.
“Shinan, Shinan, save me!” she said, and without waiting for the other person’s consent, she immediately grabbed the cup and took a big gulp.
“No… that’s!” Xia Shinan hadn’t even reacted. After an exclamation, she saw Duan Xiaofei take a sip of the water in the cup, neither spitting it out nor swallowing it, before finally swallowing it after a few seconds.
“What the heck! It’s so hot. What is it? It tastes like cold medicine!”
Xia Shinan’s pretty face crumpled, and she said in a wronged tone, “It is cold medicine… 999 brand.”
