Chapter 38: Like What I Do? Making Sweet Soup or…
In the past few days, the two young lovers went to A University together in the mornings. When they didn’t have evening classes, they would have dinner at the cafeteria in the afternoon, go home together, and then do something else in the evening to promote their relationship. Their lives were fulfilling and beautiful.
For two or three days, Tang Yin had to go help Ming Jing. During this time, Xia Shinan would accompany her, watching movies or studying on her tablet on the second floor of Ming Jing’s bar.
“Xia Shinan is really something else! This is the first time I’ve seen anyone study in my bar. I’m starting to think turning this place into a study room wouldn’t be a bad idea,” Ming Jing couldn’t help but exclaim.
Tang Yin smiled and shook her head: “Don’t let her hear that. Otherwise, knowing her, she’ll think she’s causing you trouble, and next time she comes, she’ll just sit here spacing out.”
Ming Jing chuckled: “You’re very protective of her, aren’t you…”
Tang Yin: “She’s my girlfriend, after all. I should do what’s necessary, shouldn’t I?” She finished cleaning the last table, “I’m off work. I’m going to call her home. Also, I won’t be coming in tomorrow.”
“I know, I know. You’re going to make a birthday present for your girlfriend with your own hands,” Ming Jing scoffed, “As if no one else has ever dated.”
Tang Yin went upstairs. Xia Shinan had just finished an English test paper. After they packed up, the two left.
“Will it be like this after we start working too? Going to work and leaving work together?” Under the streetlamp, Xia Shinan looked at their long shadows and couldn’t help but smile. Even their shadows were so well-matched.
“Our majors are different, so we won’t necessarily work together later,” Tang Yin paused after speaking, suddenly realizing that if Xia Shinan got married after graduation, she wouldn’t be working but would be a full-time housewife at home.
“Shinan, what do you want to do in the future?”
Xia Shinan thought for a moment. She majored in Chinese Language and Literature, and finding a job after graduation… seemed difficult. Xie Wan had initially wanted her to go abroad for advanced piano studies, which she was happy about, but the condition was that she went with Lin Yu, which Xia Shinan was unwilling to do.
Getting into A University was considered respectable, so Xie Wan relented, but she had already decided on her major early on.
“It’s good for girls to read more, be knowledgeable and reasonable. Finance and accounting are useless to you. Girls should avoid those things.”
At the time, she was foolish enough to think Xie Wan had her own reasons. Now, it seemed Xie Wan just wanted her to be a rich young lady with no real skills.
Once married into the Lin family, she would raise children and support her husband, without needing to understand how businesses operated, which wouldn’t pose a threat to either the Xia or Lin families.
“Why are you spacing out? Is it hard to think about?”
Xia Shinan came back to her senses, “It is a little difficult. If I have the chance, I still want to continue my piano studies. It would be nice to become a performer or a teacher later.”
“I see…” Tang Yin nodded, “I’ll support whatever you want to do.”
“Mhm!” Xia Shinan smiled, “What about you? What do you want to do?”
Tang Yin answered without hesitation: “Whatever makes money, I’ll do.”
Xia Shinan was surprised by her answer but smiled and said, “Whatever you do, I’ll support you too.”
“Is that so?” Tang Yin looked up, her gaze at Xia Shinan meaningful: “What if the thing I want to do will hurt others?”
“Then you must have your own reasons.”
“What if the person I hurt is you?” Tang Yin continued to ask.
Xia Shinan paused, “I trust you. You wouldn’t hurt me.”
Yes, in her eyes, I would never hurt her. Tang Yin curved her lips, but the smile felt bitter, even more bitter than the black coffee she had this morning.
She sighed, “Shinan, the person you should trust the most is yourself. No one else is reliable, including your parents, and including… me.”
Xia Shinan felt a sudden panic hearing her words and reached out to hold her hand, “Tang Yin, why are you saying that?”
“No reason. I just hope you can be a little more vigilant, towards everyone,” Tang Yin reached out and stroked her hair, “Don’t overthink it.”
The next afternoon, Tang Yin told Xia Shinan that she had family matters to attend to and wouldn’t be eating with her. She then took a thirty-minute bus ride to a local pottery studio.
“Hello, I called to make a reservation earlier. I’d like to make a vase.”
“Certainly. Do you have a design you like? More complex ones will take longer.”
“Yes.” Tang Yin showed the employee the picture she found. The design was simple: a girl under a starry sky. “Can it be fired by the end of the month?”
“Yes, it can. Are you planning to make it yourself?”
Tang Yin curved her lips, “Of course.”
She specifically set aside this time because she wanted to personally make a vase for Xia Shinan. Tang Yin knew she couldn’t afford an expensive gift, so she had to put her heart into it.
She spent the entire afternoon at the pottery studio, throwing clay, glazing, and painting. This required a lot of concentration. Initially, Tang Yin wasn’t confident she could do it, but slowly, she mastered the technique and the force. The shape of the vase gradually emerged, and then she meticulously glazed and painted the desired pattern.
By the time the glazing and painting were complete, it was already dark.
She stretched her stiff neck and shoulders, watching the employee carefully store the vase, and smiled: “Thank you for your hard work. It should take about 15-20 days. We’ll call you when it’s ready for pick up.”
“Alright, thank you.” Tang Yin walked out of the pottery studio and checked her bag, realizing her phone had long run out of battery. She sighed, wondering if Xia Shinan was worried because she couldn’t reach her.
Thinking this, Tang Yin quickened her pace toward the subway station, but as soon as she arrived, she bumped into someone coming out.
“Sister Yin!”
Tang Yin turned around and saw Chen Li, whom she hadn’t seen in a long time.
“Sister Yin, what are you doing here?”
Tang Yin replied: “There’s a pottery studio here. I came to check it out.”
“A pottery studio? Are you looking for a job here?” Chen Li laughed, “Sister Yin, if you’re short on money, tell me! My current job pays really well!”
Hearing this, Tang Yin examined Chen Li closely.
Her hair was permed into big waves, she wore heavy makeup, and her clothes were much more mature than before.
“Where are you working now?”
Chen Li pouted her lips and pointed behind her, “Over there~ Sometimes, if I’m lucky, I can earn a few hundred yuan a day selling alcohol. It’s much faster than the barbecue restaurant.”
Over there? Tang Yin followed her gaze. It was an area of neon lights and lavish colors. Clearly, it was a world for adult night-time entertainment and indulgence.
Tang Yin didn’t want to pry, but considering they were former colleagues and schoolmates, she offered a kind reminder, “Earning money is important, but you still need to protect yourself.”
Chen Li paused, her expression changing slightly, “I know, thank you, Sister Yin.”
Tang Yin: “I’m going back to school now. See you next time.”
“See you next time.” Chen Li watched Tang Yin enter the subway station, feeling a little lost until her phone rang. It was a call from her manager.
“Hello? I’m coming, I’m coming. I just bumped into a classmate and chatted for a bit…”
“What classmate? Brother Yu is here. He specifically asked you to come and keep him company for a couple of drinks. Hurry up!”
“Coming, coming.” Chen Li hung up and walked toward the nightclub behind her. She only sold alcohol there, but sometimes she would have a few drinks with rich people. It wouldn’t hurt her, and the pay was good.
Chen Li felt happy, thinking she could earn more today.
She walked through a seemingly inconspicuous doorway, but inside, the scenery was completely different. Red and green spotlights flashed overhead, and the surrounding speakers thumped heavy beats that pounded in the heart.
Chen Li was used to it. She went to the staff room, changed into a tighter, shorter skirt uniform, then headed to a private room on the second floor, knocked, and entered.
“Sorry, Brother Yu. I’m late today,” Chen Li said with a smile as she walked in.
“You can’t do this next time. You kept Brother Yu waiting for a while. Hurry and apologize,” the manager glared at her.
Chen Li immediately went to the center, sat down next to the man, and picked up a glass of wine, “This is to you, my bad.”
The man was smoking a cigarette, looking like a total playboy, “Did you meet some other rich person downstairs and now you look down on me?”
“Of course not. I ran into a classmate and chatted for a bit,” Chen Li immediately explained.
A classmate? The man smiled: “You said you were a college student last time, and I didn’t believe it. Looks like it’s true… Which university?”
Chen Li raised an eyebrow, a hint of pride in her voice, “A University.”
“A University…” A flash of surprise appeared in the man’s eyes. He wasn’t surprised that an A University student would work in a place like this. Instead, he asked, “Then do you know Xia Shinan?”
Chen Li was stunned, “Xia Shinan? She’s my classmate!”
Hearing this, the man showed a meaningful smile, “Then what about Tang Yin? Do you know her?”
Chen Li was even more surprised, “Isn’t that a coincidence? The classmate I just ran into was Tang Yin!”
The man laughed out loud and very straightforwardly took out his phone, asking Chen Li to open her QR code for payment.
Chen Li was confused but instantly received a transfer of 50,000 yuan. Her eyes widened.
The man: “Help me with something. If you succeed, I’ll give you another 100,000.”
After getting off the subway, it took another ten minutes to walk to the small apartment she shared with Xia Shinan. Tang Yin walked quickly, but outside the complex, she saw a girl wrapped in a thin coat, waiting under a streetlamp.
The night wind ruffled her long hair. She looked incredibly lonely, like a child in a TV show quietly waiting for her parents to come home, unaware that she had long been abandoned.
Seeing this, Tang Yin felt a pang of heartache and quickened her pace.
The moment she heard a sound, Xia Shinan looked up. Seeing Tang Yin, she immediately rushed over and threw herself into her arms.
“Where were you? My calls weren’t going through, I was so worried!” Her eyes were red. Seeing Tang Yin’s face, she couldn’t help but cry. First, she couldn’t contact Tang Yin, and then she hadn’t come home by almost ten o’clock. She called Ming Jing, who told her Tang Yin hadn’t gone to the bar and told her not to worry.
But how could she not worry? Xia Shinan had been restless at home and finally went downstairs to wait.
“I thought you weren’t coming back.”
Or rather, she was more afraid that Tang Yin was going to leave her.
“Silly, why wouldn’t I come back?” Tang Yin sighed, gently stroking Xia Shinan’s hair, “It’s my fault. My phone died, and I didn’t tell you beforehand. Have you been waiting for me for a long time?”
She tightly held Xia Shinan’s hand. It was ice cold, so she interlaced their fingers, “Let’s go home.”
“Mhm.” Xia Shinan leaned against her. The anxiety of the entire evening was somewhat resolved at this moment, “Where did you go?”
“I went to see Grandma. My phone died when I was coming back,” Tang Yin didn’t mention the pottery, as it was a surprise for Xia Shinan.
“Oh… Then can I come with you next time?” Xia Shinan asked, “Grandma is kind and friendly. I really like her. Anyway, I’m alone at home. Can you take me to see her next time?”
“Sure.” Tang Yin agreed, “How about this weekend? Grandma will definitely make you her homemade sweet soup then.”
Xia Shinan smiled, “Her sweet soup is delicious, but I like yours more.”
Tang Yin hummed. To ease Xia Shinan’s anxiety, she joked: “Like what I do? Making sweet soup or… making love?”
Xia Shinan was startled. She hadn’t expected Tang Yin to be so blunt. She looked up and saw the bright smile in Tang Yin’s eyes. She did it on purpose!
Xia Shinan bit her lip, looking down: “Of course it’s… the sweet soup!”
Tang Yin gripped her hand and walked quickly, “Then it seems I’m not working hard enough.”
The weekend arrived in a flash. Xia Shinan woke up early and spent a long time choosing a light yellow dress that looked gentle and elegant.
Tang Yin leaned against the headboard, watching the impromptu fashion show, “This outfit is a bit too plain. Not lively enough.”
Xia Shinan looked conflicted: “But since I’m seeing your grandmother, shouldn’t I wear something more demure?”
Tang Yin was startled, then smiled and got out of bed. When she threw off the blanket, she was only in her underwear, which made Xia Shinan a little embarrassed.
“It’s not your first time seeing Grandma. Besides… she likes seeing young girls dressed up beautifully. Sometimes she even complains that I don’t wear skirts and don’t look like a girl at all. Just dress how you usually do, and she’ll love it.”
Xia Shinan blushed, “I know, I know. Hurry and put on some clothes.”
Seeing her reaction, Tang Yin felt a playful urge, “What’s wrong? You’ve seen it and touched it before.”
“But… those times were at night. This is broad daylight,” Xia Shinan turned around, feeling the familiar presence behind her, “Stop fooling around. We’re going to see Grandma.”
Tang Yin gently bit her earlobe, “We’re going to dinner, and it’s still morning… Shinan, since you said we haven’t done it in the daytime, how about we make up for it now?”
Xia Shinan was flushed and flustered by her words. Just as she was about to give in, the phone rang inappropriately.
It was Tang Yin’s phone.
“Aren’t you going to answer?” She asked, her back to Tang Yin, feeling the other’s lips gently sucking her back.
“At this moment, how is a phone call more important than you?” Tang Yin whispered, then quickly pulled the zipper of her dress down. Soon, there was very little fabric left on her.
“Didn’t you say you haven’t seen it in the daytime? Now we’re the same,” Tang Yin said, “Shinan, turn around and look at me.”
Xia Shinan listened to her words and slowly turned around, looking up at the girl.
Tang Yin pulled her into her embrace, “There’s a mirror next to us. Look again. Your skin is very fair, while mine is quite dark… But when we make love, doesn’t it look beautiful like this? Don’t we make a good match?”
Xia Shinan listened to her words and couldn’t help but look toward the full-length mirror.
Yes… they were a good match.
She loved Tang Yin the most.
At eleven o’clock, the sound of water trickled from the bathroom. Tang Yin finished showering first, tidied up the mess in the bedroom, and only then remembered the phone call she hadn’t answered earlier.
She found her phone, turned it on, and saw it was a call from Chen Li.
