Chapter 31: Even If the Xia Family Doesn’t Acknowledge Me, They Still Have to…
Xia Shinan was dazed by the kiss. Even after Tang Yin released her, her eyes were slightly hazy. She finally hugged Tang Yin, slowly calming down in her embrace, and then suddenly remembered something and said in alarm: “Why did you kiss me before you even entered the room? What if Fang Yue saw us!”
Immediately after, she realized: “Tang Yin, you did that on purpose?”
Tang Yin curved her lips, “Not so foolish, are you?”
Xia Shinan was stunned: “Then you must have heard our conversation by the lake.”
“Mhm.”
Having confirmed her suspicion, she immediately hugged Tang Yin tightly, “Everything Fang Yue said was wrong! I’m not with you for the novelty; I genuinely like you! Don’t believe a single word of it!”
“I also won’t let my mom find you, and I definitely won’t drag you down.”
Tang Yin gently stroked the girl’s hair, looking at the dark night sky outside the window, “I know… But will you marry Lin Yu?”
“No!” Xia Shinan looked up, her eyes filled with determination, “Not before, and certainly not in the future! I only want to be with you.”
Tang Yin looked at the girl in front of her, unable to articulate the feelings she was experiencing at that moment.
She took a deep breath, then kissed the good girl’s eyes, “Okay.”
Xia Shinan closed her eyes, savoring the tenderness Tang Yin gave her. She silently promised herself in her heart.
She would definitely protect Tang Yin. She would definitely find a way… to cancel the engagement! Even if the Xia family disowned her, she had to do it. Not just for Tang Yin, but for herself!
Deep into the night, Xia Shinan was already asleep, but Tang Yin wasn’t sleepy at all. She quietly walked out of the room, went downstairs to the kitchen to grab a bottle of water, and turned around to see Fang Yue standing by the door.
“Senior.”
Fang Yue’s eyes were red, clearly showing signs of crying.
“Not sleeping yet?” Tang Yin raised an eyebrow, unscrewed the cap, and took a sip.
Fang Yue pursed her lips, walked over, and grabbed a bottle of water to hold, easing the pressure in her heart.
Tang Yin thought for a moment and said, “What you said tonight… I don’t want to hear it again in the future.”
Fang Yue’s body tensed. Indeed, Tang Yin had heard what she said, which meant Tang Yin’s kiss with Xia Shinan was deliberately done for her to see. Was she warning her not to bully Xia Shinan?
She looked at Tang Yin. All she could recall was the sunny senior who helped her on the basketball court that day. She still felt unwilling to accept this, “But what I said is true! Senior, you won’t be happy with her.”
Tang Yin forced a smile, “Junior, you’re being nosy. Whether I’m happy or not is up to me. What right do you have to judge what happiness is for me?”
Fang Yue, hearing her cold words, couldn’t help but ask, “I heard the Xia family is terrifying! Aren’t you afraid her mother will come after you? Qu Bai is an example!”
Is that so?
Tang Yin chuckled softly at the thought, mumbling, “If that happens, all the better.”
What does that mean?
Fang Yue was stunned. At the same time, Tang Yin stopped arguing with her, only giving a final warning: “Don’t provoke Xia Shinan again. I’m only saying this once.”
A night passed. Some woke up early to go out and play, while others slept until noon. In any case, by 12 o’clock, everyone gathered in the downstairs common dining room to eat together.
“Where’s Fang Yue? Why don’t I see her?” Duan Xiaofei was concerned not to see Fang Yue.
The classmate who shared a room with her scratched her head, “I didn’t see her when I woke up this morning. I saw the message she left me, saying she had something to take care of and went back early. Her luggage is gone, too.”
Went back?
Xia Shinan was startled and immediately looked at Tang Yin.
It must be because of last night…
Duan Xiaofei took out her phone and stood up: “I’ll call her and ask. You guys eat first.”
A few minutes later, Duan Xiaofei returned, smiling: “It’s nothing serious. She didn’t tell her family she was coming out to play with us. My aunt happened to go to the school to see her, so she went back to school.”
She sat down and winked at Tail.
Tail: “It’s good that nothing’s wrong. Let’s eat quickly!”
Xia Shinan already had a small appetite, and Fang Yue’s sudden departure made her even less hungry. She ate some vegetables and put down her chopsticks.
“Not eating anymore?” Tang Yin asked, “We still have to film the extra scenes this afternoon. If you get hungry, you’ll have to wait until dinner.”
Xia Shinan shook her head, “I don’t really want to eat.”
Although Fang Yue’s words last night were unpleasant, Xia Shinan still wished everyone could get along harmoniously.
But now, her heart was still filled with guilt. She didn’t want this. She didn’t want to hurt anyone and wished everyone well.
After the meal, everyone headed to the flower wall where they took photos yesterday to film the extra scenes that Tail had recently added to the script.
Tang Yin walked beside Xia Shinan, whispering, “Don’t overthink it. You’ve done very well.”
Xia Shinan posed a hypothetical situation: “If I hadn’t talked to her last night, would she have…”
“She would have found out eventually, wouldn’t she?” Tang Yin interrupted her. “You didn’t actively hurt anyone. Just because she’s unhappy… do you have to give me up?”
“Of course not!” Xia Shinan immediately retorted, “Absolutely not.”
“Mhm.” Tang Yin smiled, “Then stop torturing yourself. Be happy.”
With the filming of the extra scenes completed in the afternoon, the entire micro-film was finished. The car to take them back also arrived. After packing up their luggage, they got into the car. Everyone chatted excitedly, saying they would come back again when they won an award and party for three days and three nights to truly relax.
The drive back to A University took a little over an hour. Everyone had their own plans and parted ways at the school gate. Qian Yu also had to go home but promised to return to school to accompany Xia Shinan in two days.
Watching everyone leave, Duan Xiaofei sighed in annoyance.
“What’s wrong?” Tail asked curiously.
Duan Xiaofei: “I just feel bad for Fang Yue. She was probably rejected after confessing to Tang Yin, which is why she left early this morning. But feelings are mutual. It’s not like I can say anything…”
On the phone, Fang Yue was crying, saying Tang Yin had rejected her, but she wouldn’t say how she was rejected or what was said.
Duan Xiaofei didn’t know how to comfort her cousin, so she could only say sincerely: “You’ll meet someone better in the future.”
She watched Xia Shinan and Tang Yin walk into the school, and a thought suddenly came to her: “Do you think Tang Yin rejected Fang Yue because of Xia Shinan?”
Tail widened her eyes, “Xia Shinan? Are you saying those two… No way? If there was anything going on, there’d be no need to hide it. They’re probably just good friends…”
“Besides, even if there is something between them, it’s a mutual decision, so there’s nothing Fang Yue can do. Don’t worry about it too much.”
“You’re right,” Duan Xiaofei nodded.
Usually busy with studies and filming, they were now free. Tang Yin held Xia Shinan’s hand as they walked through the school. After eating at the cafeteria, they had nothing else to do, so they went to the bar they had visited before on the back street.
Ming Jing was still mixing drinks there. When she saw them walk in hand-in-hand, surprise was written all over her face.
“What’s going on with you two? Don’t tell me… you’re dating?”
Xia Shinan was quite embarrassed and was thinking about how to explain, but then she heard Tang Yin say: “Mhm, exactly what you think. Let’s go upstairs and sit. Mix her a low-alcohol drink. She can just take a tiny sip.”
“How can she just take a tiny sip? I’m going to make sure the little sister loves it to death.” Ming Jing’s words were mischievous.
Tang Yin replied irritably: “Who’s your little sister? Be serious. Call her by her name.”
“Okay, okay, Classmate Xia Shinan,” Ming Jing chuckled.
Xia Shinan smiled back at her, but then felt something was strange.
The two went upstairs, sat at the same spot as last time, and Xia Shinan asked: “Tang Yin, how does she know my name is Xia Shinan?”
Last time she was very upset and didn’t talk much to Ming Jing, let alone formally introduce herself.
Tang Yin raised an eyebrow, “Of course I told her. She’s already graduated, so it’s fine for her to know some things about us.”
“Oh…” Xia Shinan nodded. It seemed Ming Jing was the first person to know they were together. She couldn’t help but think of Qian Yu. She felt she still needed to find a suitable opportunity to tell her.
“You sit here first. I’ll go downstairs and keep an eye on her so she doesn’t make your drink too strong.”
“Okay.”
Downstairs.
Tang Yin walked into the bar area, washed her hands, and skillfully picked up a glass to start mixing a drink.
Ming Jing teased her, “I didn’t believe you when you called me that day. I didn’t think it was true… Being in love is certainly different! You’re even personally mixing a drink for your girlfriend~~”
Tang Yin smiled, “Aren’t I afraid you’d pull some trick with the drink later… It’s better to make it myself.”
As she spoke, she glanced upstairs. From where she stood, she could look up and see Xia Shinan sitting by the window. She said faintly, “You let it slip just now. She never told you her name, yet you called her Xia Shinan.”
“Huh?” Ming Jing was stunned, “Is that a big deal?”
“Mhm, I managed to cover it up.”
Ming Jing followed Tang Yin’s gaze, “The good girl is that smart and sensitive?”
Tang Yin withdrew her gaze and glared at her silently, “She’s been too protected by the Xia family, but she’s not an idiot. On the contrary, she’s very smart and understands a lot of things in her heart.”
“Tsk, now you’re speaking highly of her?” Ming Jing smiled, poured the freshly mixed cocktail into a tall glass, and placed a slice of lemon on top. “Previously, someone clearly told me fiercely that Xia Shinan was nothing more than an ignorant canary, and that you would… befriend her and find a way to get close to the Xia family.”
“How did a friend turn into a lover now?” Ming Jing was curious, “Could it be that you actually fell for her?”
Tang Yin lowered her gaze, her long eyelashes drooping, revealing a hint of loneliness. After a moment, she looked up again, meeting Xia Shinan’s gaze turning towards her. She smiled at Xia Shinan, her lips slightly parted as she began to answer Ming Jing.
“I won’t.”
She wouldn’t fall for Xia Shinan.
“Dating a girl, that’ll really infuriate her.”
She had only softly said this one sentence, opening the door to another path. Since this path was easier, there was no reason for her not to take it.
Approaching the Xia family as a friend was too difficult, but as a lover? Friend to lover, many things would be more convenient and faster.
“The good girl is a lesbian. Don’t you think the Xia family will be even more anxious and embarrassed when they find out? When the truth is exposed, even if the Xia family doesn’t acknowledge me as their daughter, they’ll still have to pay me to shut up, won’t they?”
Ming Jing took a deep breath. Tang Yin’s smile and the words she spoke carried completely different temperatures. She had known the person in front of her for many years, yet she felt like she didn’t fully understand her… so ruthless and cruel.
Tang Yin heard her, turned to look at her, and scoffed at herself, “Ming Jing, I’m a particularly rotten person. For money, for status, I can do anything.”
Ming Jing looked at her and, after a long while, asked: “What if one day you regret it?”
This time, Tang Yin didn’t answer. She seriously began to mix a drink for Xia Shinan, a very low-alcohol drink with a sweet, fruity aroma, garnished with two cherries on top.
She also fried a small snack and carried them both upstairs.
“Remember to pay!” Ming Jing joked, but her smile gradually faded, replaced by worry as she watched Tang Yin’s retreating back.
No answer, because…
You know you’ll definitely regret it, right?
And do you really not like Xia Shinan?
Xia Shinan sat obediently waiting for Tang Yin, occasionally exchanging a smile with Tang Yin mixing drinks downstairs.
Suddenly, the phone on the table vibrated. It was an unknown number.
Hesitating for two seconds, Xia Shinan answered, “Hello?”
A man’s laughter came through the receiver. Xia Shinan felt it was familiar, and then the person spoke: “Xia Shinan, it’s Lin Yu.”
Lin Yu?
Xia Shinan was shocked. She didn’t have Lin Yu’s number, and she had even blocked him on WeChat…
“I’ve considered it. Since you have no intention of marrying me, how about we meet and have a proper talk about canceling the engagement?”
