Chapter 14: She Looked Up at Tang Yin, Cautiously…
The submission deadline for the micro-film competition was at the end of June, voting and judging would begin in early July, and the results and awards would be announced in September. Time was very tight, so Duan Xiaofei revised the latest filming schedule and posted it in the group chat.
The time ahead is very precious. I hope everyone can cooperate. There will be plenty of milk tea and coffee during the filming! If you have any time conflicts, you can private message me.
Okay-dokey!
As long as there’s milk tea, we’ll do whatever President says!
You should try to lose some weight. You still have a cameo role or something…
I called you ‘President,’ why are you attacking me!
I’m not, I’m just stating facts…
Xia Shinan scrolled through the screen. Everyone in the group chat replied, and the conversation soon turned into an emoji war between Weiba and Duan Xiaofei. She scrolled for a long time but didn’t see the familiar profile picture speak up.
Tang Yin hadn’t said anything.
She waited for another ten minutes, still without a reply from Tang Yin, and Xia Shinan’s expression became heavier.
Remembering the unpleasant parting between her and Tang Yin two days ago, Xia Shinan worried that Tang Yin would quit the shoot because she hated her.
After some hesitation, Xia Shinan private messaged Duan Xiaofei.
President, is there anything wrong with the filming schedule?
Duan Xiaofei quickly replied: No! Why? Did your schedule change?
Xia Shinan: Mine didn’t. I was just asking… whether what happened that day affected everyone.
Duan Xiaofei: Of course not! We’re all on your side. Even if we don’t know the full story, anyone who saw the situation knows it wasn’t your fault!
Looking at Duan Xiaofei’s text, Xia Shinan didn’t feel any comfort. Instead, she felt more upset.
She wished Tang Yin would comfort her in the same way, but if Tang Yin said those things, she wouldn’t be Tang Yin.
The next second, a new message popped up on her phone screen.
Xia Shinan immediately checked her phone. Tang Yin had simply replied with (Received) in the group chat.
She hasn’t quit, that’s great. Xia Shinan smiled, immediately put down her phone, and walked to the closet to prepare the clothes she needed for tomorrow’s shoot. The previous photos were for promotional purposes, and the clothes for the actual filming were different.
She tried clothes on for a while before finally deciding what to wear tomorrow, but then she sat down on the bed feeling deflated.
Will tomorrow’s shoot go smoothly? She both wanted Tang Yin to continue filming with her but was also afraid of Tang Yin’s attitude being the same as it was that day.
In any case, it was predictable that the upcoming shoot probably wouldn’t go as smoothly as before.
The weekend morning was unusually peaceful. The drizzling rain that fell all night brought refreshing air in the morning. Sparrows chirped on the branches, flying quickly from one branch to another as the morning sun slowly rose.
Xia Shinan arrived at the scheduled shooting location, Duxing Building. She was ten minutes early but found the president, Weiba, and a few other members had already arrived.
“Shinan, you’re really dressed up like Mi Jia today!” Duan Xiaofei praised her emphatically, satisfied. Xia Shinan was wearing denim overall shorts, a light pink T-shirt with a cute bow print, and her hair was tied up in a simple bun. She looked full of youthful energy.
“I was worried it wouldn’t fit Mi Jia’s character. That’s great!” Xia Shinan said with a smile.
“Hehe… By the way, is the boss not coming today?” Duan Xiaofei looked around and asked. The “boss” naturally referred to Qian Yu.
“She likes to sleep in on weekends. She couldn’t wake up,” Xia Shinan replied. Then, she also couldn’t help but look around. Tang Yin didn’t seem to have arrived yet.
Weiba muttered to the side, “Why are you so concerned about the boss?”
Duan Xiaofei: “She’s the boss!”
Weiba scoffed and looked at Xia Shinan: “Shinan, did you grab breakfast?”
Xia Shinan shook her head, “I didn’t have much of an appetite this morning. I didn’t really feel like eating.”
Weiba worried: “How can you not eat? I brought some small biscuits. You can snack on them if you get hungry later. I’ll go buy coffee for everyone during the break.”
“Thank you, little Weiba.” Xia Shinan smiled, but her peripheral vision caught sight of the girl walking from the side path.
She was dressed simply today, not much different from her previous style, still a plain T-shirt and black sports pants, but she looked so unique under the warm sunlight.
“Tang Yin is here!” Duan Xiaofei also saw her and waved to greet her.
“Good morning, President,” Tang Yin walked closer and greeted Duan Xiaofei with a smile first.
“Sigh! You guys keep calling me that like little Weiba, it makes me embarrassed,” Duan Xiaofei said, placing her hands on her hips, then looked at everyone, “Let’s go, let’s go. We can go to the classroom first.”
Everyone followed Duan Xiaofei’s lead. Xia Shinan looked at Tang Yin. The other party responded naturally and then walked past her.
Xia Shinan stopped in her tracks. Did Tang Yin… not see her?
Impossible. I’m a person of this size; how could she not see me?
So, she deliberately ignored me?
“Shinan, hurry up and catch up!” Duan Xiaofei, who was walking ahead, didn’t see Xia Shinan, so she glanced back and shouted.
“Coming,” Xia Shinan responded softly, shaking her head and pushing aside those messy thoughts.
No matter what, Tang Yin had agreed to film, so she would definitely do it well. Even if there was a rift between them, as long as it didn’t affect the filming and everyone else, it was fine.
As for the other things… she couldn’t worry about them anymore!
Today’s shoot was the first meeting between Mi Jia and Xiao Ying on campus. The two had signed up for the same general education course, and unexpectedly, they would not only be in the same classroom for a semester but also be assigned to the same group for assignments later.
Duan Xiaofei raised the camera and shouted “ACTION.” Xia Shinan immediately got into character, rushing from the end of the corridor. She was panting, her eyes anxious. When she finally reached the back door of the classroom, she took a deep breath before cautiously stepping inside.
Xia Shinan looked around the seats and then froze as if she had been acupunctured.
And at that moment, the other person suddenly turned around.
There was no surprise or ripple in her eyes when she saw her. She merely lifted her gaze slightly before turning back to continue with the class.
“Student, how long are you going to choose a seat?” The serious-looking teacher looked at her.
“I’m sorry, Teacher.” Mi Jia awkwardly found a random seat and sat down, happening to be in the row right behind Xiao Ying. Unfortunately, Xiao Ying never looked back at her again, as if she didn’t know her.
Mi Jia became angrier the more she thought about it. Instead, she puffed up her cheeks and stared at the back of Xiao Ying’s head for two entire classes.
Before class ended, the teacher randomly assigned groups, and Mi Jia, Xiao Ying, and others were grouped together. After class, as the group members introduced themselves, Xiao Ying saw the look of difficulty on Mi Jia’s face and proactively said: “Never mind, I’ll ask the teacher if I can switch groups.”
Mi Jia heard this and thought Xiao Ying didn’t want to be in the same group as her, so she also said angrily: “Yes! Hurry up and ask. I don’t want to be in the same group as you even more.”
Xiao Ying pulled the corner of her mouth into a slight smile: “Is that so? Then why were you staring at me for two classes?”
“Cut!”
Duan Xiaofei shouted, capturing the moment of Xia Shinan’s panicked expression after being exposed.
“Great shot! This is excellent. Our first day of filming is very smooth!” Duan Xiaofei said with satisfaction. “Take a break. Tang Yin, we’ll just do a few retakes of Xiao Ying’s inner thoughts and close-ups later. Shinan, please help coordinate as well.”
A dual-female lead micro-film naturally includes both perspectives.
For instance, Xiao Ying knew Mi Jia would be taking this general course, which is why she signed up. Also, the brightly polished glass window in the classroom allowed Xiao Ying to catch all of Mi Jia’s subtle expressions.
Duan Xiaofei was very serious and meticulous about the shooting. Some shots were repeated several times until she got what she wanted before taking a break. She then noticed that it was already past noon.
“Oh, it’s lunchtime!” Duan Xiaofei exclaimed, and then immediately made arrangements.
“Let’s go have lunch and rest. We’ll continue in the afternoon!”
Everyone readily agreed. Xia Shinan smiled and nodded, but her heart was still feeling a little down.
When she was acting as Mi Jia just now, she wasn’t embodying the lively and lovely girl but herself.
She was looking at Tang Yin, wondering why Tang Yin gave up on being friends with her so easily. She felt a little sad that she had lost such a good friend.
Her complex emotions were all tangled up. Even when Duan Xiaofei shouted “Cut,” she didn’t have time to pull them back.
“Shinan, what’s wrong? You look pale. Are you feeling unwell?” Weiba stood next to her and immediately noticed something was off.
Xia Shinan felt embarrassed. Luckily, her mind worked fast, and she said softly: “It might be because I didn’t eat breakfast.”
“Oh… you must eat something tomorrow morning. You’re so thin; you could easily get low blood sugar!” Weiba worried.
“Mhm! Sorry for making you worry.” Xia Shinan said, but a hand suddenly appeared in front of her, offering a small bag of bread.
Xia Shinan froze, looking up at the owner of the hand, slightly confused about the intention.
“Eat this for now. The sun is strong outside, and you’re more likely to get low blood sugar if you go out. We’ll buy food for you when we return.” Tang Yin’s face remained expressionless, and her tone was even cold, but her words brought joy to Xia Shinan’s heart. Did this mean Tang Yin was still talking to her?
She took the small bag of bread as if receiving a signal from Tang Yin, gripping it tightly.
Even if this is a misinterpretation, I don’t care anymore.
Weiba: “Tang Yin is right. Shinan, why don’t you rest in the classroom? We’ll bring food back for you. What do you want to eat? Do you want another milk tea? Something sweet is better!”
Duan Xiaofei thought for a moment, “Then let’s have one person stay with her. It’ll be easier to contact someone if something happens.”
Xia Shinan looked at everyone. She, who usually said “no need,” “whatever,” or “it’s fine,” made a request, her voice soft yet firm.
“Then let Tang Yin stay with me. We can go over our lines and stuff. I’ll treat everyone to milk tea. I’d appreciate it if you could bring me food.”
After saying that, she looked up at Tang Yin, cautiously: “Is that okay?”
